[quote author=NwanyiOkpa post=85334370]Good morning, I hope you are doing great. I intend going abroad for my masters, come this august 2020. I have secured admissions in the USA for MSc. Mechanical Engineering. i have partial funding already and i will be paying for the rest. To better make my decision, did you have any regrets with studying abroad? did it give you an edge during your job search? My brother, l didn’t regret it; it was a good experience. l started off with a Msc in Economics, then switched to Computers and Information Systems after taking some IT-related pre-courses. Except if you have a nice job waiting for you after graduation, l advice you stay behind after your program to get on-the-job experience before thinking of going back. I now live in the States as a PR, married and having a good life. I planned of going back home for good, but only when l have achieved some goals l have up my sleeve. For now, 9ja na to come visit! 4 Likes 1 Share |

I just dey read una post dey laugh...am sure those advising you not to leave are those that didn't get a chance to travel or still have no support .. I have friends whom I communicate with on regular basis in both US and Scotland ..some studying MA in management and practical leadership in Scotland yet they have never for one day thought of coming back to Nigeria instead they flew their entire family over there ..am cleaner job in UK or US is better than a 9-5 PM job in Nigeria..so my advice ..MoVE ...if not your children will curse for bringing them up in a country that has no regards for human rights 5 Likes |

I doubt any right thinking fellow would regret doing Masters in Nigeria let alone overseas. No knowledge is a waste. Now the reason many persons remain jobless after Masters is failure to apply what they've learnt in the smallest available opportunity they come across. I'm guessing a good number of such persons would automatically think top positions are in for the taking at first shot nah it doesn't work like that, you have got to work your way up from bottom. |

vincent7000:I tell you! All the persons I know who travelled to further their studies or work with their cert but ended up getting an odd job, not one has regretted the journey they undertook. The only ones regretting are those who decided to come back to Nigeria despite having a fair job to do there & now they are seeking ways to go back. Saving up money to leave pretty soon to build career & raise my family there. A cousin of mine who is doing a 2 yr contract job in close by Dubai just renewed his contract ask me how much he is been paid just 1500 Dirham monthly not forgetting the bills & rent expenses but he chose to remain there. I doubt I can do that. He said he'ad rather stay with the certain than quit & face the uncertain. |

BiggyB242: You're right to some extent with the higher likelihood of funding for a PhD, but claiming the stipend on offer is high as $2500 is misleading. I will like you to state your source and disciplines that are paid that much. I'm a PhD student in a STEM field here in the USA and I can tell you the average stipend after tax is usually capped at $1600 maximum. 1 Like |
