Good morning,

I hope you are doing great. I intend going abroad for my masters, come this august 2020. I have secured admissions in the USA for MSc. Mechanical Engineering. i have partial funding already and i will be paying for the rest.

To better make my decision, did you have any regrets with studying abroad? did it give you an edge during your job search?

Thanks.
My only question is why Mechanical Engineering?

PLEASE GO.

Realistically, If you are going there for Mechanical Engineering, It is good. it's a STEM course & lots of opportunities there.

Also, no matter what happens. Please don't come back home to Nigeria with your US certificate thinking you have an edge. YOU DON"T.

During your time in school, find a cool headed educated STEM Black American graduate & marry him. Continue your life & live happily ever after.
Don't mess around with Nigerians that won't offer you anything, BE WISE PLEASE.

Nigerians are the most educated blacks in America.

Black Americans are in jail.

Clown.

If you have the opportunity to study abroad without breaking sweat to get the funds my guy go o because what you will learn outside university alone is more than what some people that head government agencies in Nigeria cant relate to. Even mixing with people for 6 months from other countries or locals, o boy ur perspective about life will change. Although job is not guaranteed but some people underestimate learning outside class. UK is not worth going to except engineering , medicine , core IT maybe accounting even you are better off studying nursing self than accounting. UK exchange rate now is no joke o . if the university can't guarantee me internship in a company in UK , with a 2:1 . I can't go to UK. Canada is offering citizenship and cost less to school there . so for me US AND CANADA everywhere else na major risk the former are calculated risk.
What about china?

It's hard to see someone who did Msc in Health or Engineering course in US and return Nigeria to regret it.

Most of the people complaining did Msc in Humanities Or Business field or Art, and the worst, do it in Cyprus, Romania, Belarus, Sweden, Ukraine, bla bla.

US education is King and has no equal.

Do you think you can afford to school in Sweden, one of the most innovative society in the world

My brother, l didn’t regret it; it was a good experience.

l started off with a Msc in Economics, then switched to Computers and Information Systems after taking some IT-related pre-courses. Except if you have a nice job waiting for you after graduation, l advice you stay behind after your program to get on-the-job experience before thinking of going back. I now live in the States as a PR, married and having a good life. I planned of going back home for good, but only when l have achieved some goals l have up my sleeve. For now, 9ja na to come visit!

Honestly I havnt heard or seen anyone who did Masters abroad and came back to Nigeria with better opportunities than the Masters Holders from Nigerian Universities.

The truth is that Nigeria first degree is not valuable abroad so doing only masters abroad is more or less a rip off and waste of time.

The only thing I know about them is AUDIO BENEFITS.

Their parents and sponsors are waiting for the benefits the way Nigeria is waiting for 24/7 electricity power supply.

If you really want to enjoy the benefits of studying abroad you better start with first degree before masters. You can enjoy the benefit both home and abroad.

Many Nigerian innovators of the 21st century had their higher education in the United States. Sowore had his first degree in Nigeria and Master's in the U.S
What about Akinwunmi Adeshina? President of African Development Bank? What about the Founder of Jumia? Konga? Andela? Chimamanda Ngozi Adichie? Ngozi Okonjo Iweala? They are all Nigerians who had their graduate school in the U.S

It depends on your field of study; if you're going into any of the STEM fields then you MAY have an edge in the jobs market; for any other course, the advantage is mostly psychological; I have 3 masters degrees already from 3 of the world's top universities and I can tell you authoritatively that it hasn't done anything to boost my job's prospect.

If you're not going for STEM my advise is that you should spend your money setting up a business for yourself in Nigeria.

Coldie:

Wow... Na so Nigeria bad reach, even with the abroad credentials no jobs.l

I know a girl who studied in the UK, both bsc and MSC and is in Nigeria, no work.

Since she got the accent she now acts as a TOEFL private tutor.

U can't imagine the kind of business that heavy millions could have yielded if she invested it in Nigeria

Please which schools did Aliko Dangote, Elumelu and Chagoury do their masters before they made it in Nigeria? Bottom line ...have a Vision and build a plan around your vision...if your plan includes a master's ...so be it! Also remember that university is NOT university o! Harvard is not Minnesota Tech. If you must go abroad, try and attend the top 30 unis in the US at least .

All "R1" universities in the U.S are world-class universities. Let's say the top "70-100" U.S institutions.

In 2009 after my youth service, I decided to further my studies in the UK. After the completion of my masters I came back home. For months I was jobless and it was excruciatingly depressing and so I decided to head back to the UK. From the UK, I proceeded to South Africa for my PhD, today I can tell you proudly that I’m the IT Manager in well known bank in South Africa. My Masters opened doors for me from the onset I stepped into SA. So I’d advise you strongly to go for your masters in the US. You will reap the benefits sooner or later
oooh boy! were your living costs and tuition fees all expense paid, or ....

are you saying all that money would've yielded quicker results if you went to ZA straight? with what you know now, will you still have gone for the UK postgrad?

Definitely the United States.

I doubt any right thinking fellow would regret doing Masters in Nigeria let alone overseas.
No knowledge is a waste. Now the reason many persons remain jobless after Masters is failure to apply what they've learnt in the smallest available opportunity they come across. I'm guessing a good number of such persons would automatically think top positions are in for the taking at first shot nah it doesn't work like that, you have got to work your way up from bottom.

I tell you!
All the persons I know who travelled to further their studies or work with their cert but ended up getting an odd job, not one has regretted the journey they undertook. The only ones regretting are those who decided to come back to Nigeria despite having a fair job to do there & now they are seeking ways to go back.
Saving up money to leave pretty soon to build career & raise my family there.
A cousin of mine who is doing a 2 yr contract job in close by Dubai just renewed his contract ask me how much he is been paid just 1500 Dirham monthly not forgetting the bills & rent expenses but he chose to remain there. I doubt I can do that. He said he'ad rather stay with the certain than quit & face the uncertain.

There's no regret going for master in the US unlike the Uk where you will likely come back to Nigeria, but you would have gone for a PhD, because you will be paid a stipends of about $2500 as a research/graduate assistance and also a free tuition.

You're right to some extent with the higher likelihood of funding for a PhD, but claiming the stipend on offer is high as $2500 is misleading. I will like you to state your source and disciplines that are paid that much.

I'm a PhD student in a STEM field here in the USA and I can tell you the average stipend after tax is usually capped at $1600 maximum.
