The difference in complexion alone between races already makes a lot of difference. Ladies make use of bleaching creams because of entrenched prejudice against darker skin tone that dates back centuries, stemming from slavery and colonialism. In places like Jamaica where lighter skinned people are disproportionately empowered, even men join and bleach their skin.

The primary problem is not that the colour is ugly but that it symbolises lack of power. Then on top of that, nefarious media and advertising agenda constantly promote the idea that fairer skin is nicer or better because they need to uphold global power structures by making us feel inferior.
