Ofcourse it is.. Coaching the youth side of a country is good experience for a coach just starting out.

For one tournament stop it. That might as well be no experience. Just like Oliseh coached a 3rd division side and nobody blinked

It is experience for someone learning the job. He was also working at Arsenal academy. Olofinjana worked at the wolves academy when getting his license. Finidi worked at the Mallorca academy when getting his license. Viera worked with the Man city academy.

See, where i am going.

Players cut their teeth learning by working in academies when getting their licenses. In fact, it is part of the requirement to get a coaching license.

A 2004 BBC article when Amuneke started his coaching licenses.

Amuneke has a UEFA pro license now. The highest qualification from Europe. If Amuneke was appointed assistant with the view of making him chief coach after Rohr, it would make sense.

Amuneke turns to coaching

By Tope Agboola
BBC Sport

Former Nigeria international Emmanuel Amuneke wants to be a coach

Former international Emmanuel Amuneke has turned to coaching and has set his sights on one of Nigeria's national teams.

The 33-year-old striker has started work on attaining his coaching badges with the Spanish Football Association at his home base in Santander.

For Amuneke, whose final days as a player were blighted by injury, a move into coaching is the obvious way of staying involved in the game.

''I have already begun my coaching studies and I am enjoying every bit of it,'' Amuneke told BBC Sport.

''Currently I'm at the first level which lasts for nine months, I hope to complete the remaining two levels before launching into the whirlpool of the coaching profession.''

The 1994 African footballer of the year says that his ultimate goal would be to coach Nigeria at any level.

''If I get the opportunity to coach any of the Nigerian national teams in the near future I'll be glad.''

''As a coach you have to learn about the latest ideas, which is what I'm doing now.''

Amuneke however had wanted to continue his playing career after he left Al-Wahdat of Jordan.

''I couldn't secure a move to Coventry City in England this season because I haven't made enough international appearances problem and I don't have a European passport,.'' the former Sporting Lisbon and Barcelona player told BBC sport.

"So instead of waiting I decided to take up coaching."

The diminutive winger is also unhappy with the state of football in Nigeria.

''Why can't Nigeria keep up with the standard we set between 1992 and 1997, the football authorities will have to explain," he said.

''The wrong people with the wrong ideas are in the right position.''

Was it due to a shortage of referees or its a popular norm in the NNPL

Female refrees sometimes officiate NPFL games.

Sincerely, Yobo may not be as moxie as you are, but certainly he will meet with growth.

I sincerely hope he is a success for the team. I did not expect much from Scott Parker when he started coaching. Today, I am one of his fans. So Yobo needs to get the talks to his side and get to work.

Samson Siasia and Joseph Yobo, what's the similarity?

Philosopher1979:
I support it because he seems to have the charisma, leadership ability. Also, he has contacts in Europe and can easily get clubs for our local players with his connections. However, what coaching experience does he have?
This is something that needs to be considered.
He can be our new Samson Siasia and even achieve more than him if he suceeds but again his coaching experience needs to be looked into

it's no surprise but what is very troubling is that Nigerians will still defend such mediocrity.

Icon79:
It’s only in Nigeria that one becomes a national team coach without any formal coaching experience! How could some begin his coaching career with the national team? And you wonder why Nigeria has remained a failed state?

Finidi is actually right! take note, he said international glory. Many Nigerians, or at least most of us here want us to be champions in Africa, like doing very well at the world stage is a tall order. I personally don't think Rohr can do well in a world cup without a sound assistant. I have said this many times.

in what capacity did he work with Moyes?
TheGoodJoe:

I actually think Yobo is a poor analyst. Never heard good tactical inputs or perspectives out of the regular talks.

Either way, he worked with Moyes for a long while and must have picked some coaching ideas for him.

Not my kind of pick when it comes to style of play.

This is not what SE needs at the moment. Yobo can learn this trade elsewhere. We need meaningful addition to the technical bench. Or at least tell us he would just be a defender trainer.

Bolowolowo:

I concur. A lot of those European coaches worked out of youth academies, age grade teams and some even went through classes. Hopefully Yobo supplements his tenure with coaching enrichment opportunities and genuinely studies the game.

It's all about setting a precedent. Else we can keep making appointments like this and citing few examples where it eventually turned out well.
TheSuperNerd:
Actually... I still see a few stuffs like this happen. But won't say more than that.

With that said... I am shocked by Yobo's appointment. And in the longest run, I prefer an Amuneke to lead the Super Eagles forward than a Yobo based on the fact Amuneke is much more qualified and would be even much more experienced beyond 2022.

But again... I dropped that Thomas example to remind us that indeed people have made it into mainstream professions without the requisite Qualifications and turned out successful. Few examples still exist today.

Zinedine Zidane granted UEFA Coaching License

The Castilla manager meets final qualifications.

Real Madrid Castilla manager, and former senior side star player, Zinedine Zidane has been granted his UEFA Pro License today and is now able to manage a football club at the highest level in Europe.

According to the report:

Zidane has been working as coach of Real Madrid's Castilla ‘B' team but was officially listed as an assistant because he had yet to complete the mandatory qualification required by the Spanish Football Association. But now the 42-year-old, who won 108 caps for France, is free to pursue his career after revealing he successfully passed the course on Friday.

If you recall, Zidane was in hot water last fall as he did not have the proper coaching badges but a suspension was lifted after he was cleared to manage by the Administrative Tribunal of Spanish sport (TAD). Seen as one of the frontrunners to replace current senior manager Carlo Ancelotti should he lose his position this summer, Zidane has also been linked to replace Marcelo Bielsa at Marseille should they part with him.

Zidane's Castilla side sits in seventh place in the Segunda B Group 2 with two matches left to play.

Nigerians deserves whatever they get in terms of leadership. Imagine some folks here defending the appointment of Yobo, just because man played 100 matches for Nigeria, he should now mount leadership of the nations apex team with no credible qualification. This is how we support mediocrity then cry foul when illiterates gets appointed into other spheres of our national life. Pinnick is just giving out jobs based on paddy paddy levels. No single credibility, what is Yobo bringing to the table when we already have a tactical deficient Rohr In charge? it all amounts to square peg in a round hole

Of course he has no experience but I have proven that experience talk as BS. Even after sleeping on it I still say Joseph Yobo will be a super hit with the super eagles. This just made Rohr's job 10 times easier. Most of our players look up to Yobo, ffs he has the most caps in history. When he speaks they will listen because he can relate to all of them. If I am Iwobi I am running there to ask him questions about Everton and if I am Ajayi I want to know what to expect in the EPL from a guy who played almost a decade there. This hire doesn't only replace Imama it replaces Mikel because they now have a big brother them.

On the pitch he will improve our defenders immensely. Joseph Yobo doesn't need coaching school to tell you that you are in a wrong position as a defender or give you tricks of the trade. I personally believe he has a coaching certificate, not because I am believing that the NFF wouldn't hire someone without qualification but because I don't think Yobo is the type of person that would accept something like that without following due process. He didn't take short cuts as a player so is it now he will start

Because it was on the news because Finidi is campaigning for a position. Yobo never bad mouthed anyone, Yobo never promoted himself publicly and we need this attitude on the super eagles. If Yobo says he doesn't have qualification I will accept but what I won't agree with is u turning hearsay into fact

If Yobo has a coaching certificate show us, if you can't and their is no mention of it in the news about him

That means he doesn't
