Kimzylove:

Hello sir,
About the question i want to ask.... I am studying BCH and i'm planning on taking JAMB to study pharmacy, i've read your other comments and i think you're in the best position to advise me because you studied BCH too as your first degree.
I've always wanted to study pharmacy but my uni doesn't have the course so i was advised to choose BCH...that it is very similar to pharmacy.
So i really want to know:
Is pharmacy really worth it?
I don't plan on opening shop ooo but will my employment be ALWAYS sure?
Is BCH that bad?
Although so far so good BCH has been a great ride... This isn't about money, it is about passion and finding fufilment.
My mentor studied pharmacy too... He has been working in FIDSON since i've known him.
Please i am the one who asked you for advice so anything you say will be appreciated and it will really go a long way.
Thanks in anticipation.
OK... I understand your plight.
Biochem is good for someone who intends going into research and the academia. In Nigeria however, the course has little job opportunities. The only readily available job is lecturing and that is if one has done masters and PhD. The fewer jobs available in oil and gas industries and co are usually reserved for children of the rich and highly connected.
Also, mind you that almost all universities in Nigeria offer biochemistry and turn out many graduates into the labour market on yearly basis thus worsening the competition for the few available jobs.

PLEASE BIOCHEMISTRY IS NOT ALMOST THE SAME THING AS PHARMACY. Those that say that speak out of gross ignorance!
Pharmacy consists of six departments viz Pharmacology, pharmaceutics, pharmaceutical chemistry, pharmaceutical microbiology, pharmacognosy and clinical pharmacy. The course is very didactic and highly demanding. In 200level, they offer biochemistry (everything I did at BSc level including practicals), physiology, Anatomy and other pharmacy courses including pharm maths).

In uniben for instance where they offer the course as pharmD, the training is very rigorous as they combine pharmaceutical sciences with intense clinical exposures(they study all disease conditions, patients assessment and counseling, clinical clerkship etc) which enables graduates to help physicians in clinical settings to identify and proffer solutions to drug-related problems through patients interview and assessment.

Having stated the above, I'll encourage you to pursue your dream of studying pharmacy because in honesty, the course is rewarding and opens a lot of opportunities in many aspects of pharmacy practice such as hospital pharmacy, industrial pharmacy, community pharmacy, regulatory affairs pharmacy, academic pharmacy, military pharmacy, ambulatory pharmacy etc. If you are interested in research, pharmacy would provide you more options of research areas to delve into. Some uninformed people look down on community pharmacy, but that is the cash cow of the profession! Some refer to it as "store" and stuff like that, but it all depends on how one packages one's business. There are some community pharmacies with breathtaking arrangement such that when you enter the place, you'll love working there.

In what level are you already in biochem? If you're still in 100level, I'll advise you to prepare well and write JAMB again, this time around choose a school like uniben that offers pharmacy. But if you're already in say 300level, I'll advise that you finish biochem and then apply for direct entry into pharmacy. You'll enjoy pharmacy but you seriously need to work hard!

I wish you the very best of luck.

Fellow basic medicine graduate, such as biochemist, physiologist, anatomist, microbiologist ...
Is this how we are going to be folding our hand and take no move on the highest rate of not getting better job in our dear country Nigeria by allowing some field to continue cheating on us. For how long are we go to continue with this our silent, accepting that some department that come across our department and we also come across their department should be our dictator when it comes to job opportunity because 80% of us saw this course as an alternative to so call clinical medicine what is now our testimony now?
Why did we now see ourselves like a slave to this clinical medicine and we now need to hide our degree and apply as an O level holder before we can work in hospital as health or x ray attendance forgotten that we are graduate?
Why can we call on the government to look into it because all this our hospital have laboratory in which the have to run biochemical, microbiology, anatomy and physiological examination.
Why can we ask whose field is working in the above mentioned laboratory when we the graduate of those field were not included in the recruitment Calder form when ever there is hospital requirement form is out?
Why can we call on the NUC to remove our courses from clinical medicine and explain to them that they have render us jobless and if they need our help they should call on us.
If NUC and Government say it will not meet with world academic standard, why can we tell them is the world standard say we should be treated when it come to job opportunity?
Please let put-on this fight so that we can enjoy our struggles in schools, enjoy our skills and knowledge.
Let use all our social media platform and any other platform let us express our feeling on all the NUC, state and federal government platform and let other that see it comment too then they we take us serious but if we are still ok with teaching of secondary schools biology, chemistry, agricultural science, physics let us keep mute. Thanks

You should rather dissipate all the energy in pressuring the government to invest in RESEARCH. Also, put in efforts to attract the private sector and NGOs and make them see reasons to invest in research! If more money is made available for research, you can have grants to work with as a researcher and with dedication, you could breakthrough and possibly patent a product. That's so much money you know.

No where in the world do people work as medical laboratory scientists in hospitals with just a BSc in the above science courses you mentioned. Most of these courses were created for the purposes of research and teaching and that is even after studying up to PhD level. Every other thing na jara!
