Covid19Control:
It has been very difficult for average Nigerians in Nigeria to get tested. In most cases, they are screened out as low priority.

For this reason, we came together to setup a First-Contact service for average Nigerians.

Everything you need to know about our strategy to give full attention to everyone is on our Nairaland thread.

We have repeatedly reached out to persons who indicated that they were experiencing certain Covid-19 associated symptoms, offered medical advise, and channeled the data to the responsible government agencies for immediate intervention.

Here's a link to our thread - https://www.nairaland.com/5761835/fill-form-experiencing-symptoms-covid-19

I don't know how you people reason. Do you know that asymptomatic patients do share the virus? Are u going to test only those with symptoms? What about those who are newly infected without any symptoms and are also transmitting the virus? Is this the best way to stop the spread?
Think critically pls. Is this how south Africa was able to test thousands of persona in few days?
Stop making excuse for the failure of our government.
I even propose that every local government in Nigeria should have testing zone. That way we can curb the spread

Coronavirus: A Facebook User’s Experience Of Getting Tested In Abuja

ATTENTION: PRESIDENCY & FED. MINISTRY OF HEALTH

To tell you the truth, NCDC can't do anything for you because they are not ready.
All this PR they are doing they are assuming people will not try that's why.
On Wednesday (25/03/2020) I and a colleague of mine decided we want to be sure of our status before going into #selfisolation.

So we went through the following steps

1. We called the toll free line and after all the normal recorded stories, when we chose to speak to an agent they end the call.

2. We went to University of Abuja Teaching Hospital, Gwagwalada, they told us they don't do testing there, that the hospital is only an isolation center. They refer us back to NCDC office in town, told us that's where testing lab is.

3. We drove to NCDC office at Jabi. There are two NCDC offices there in close proximity. The first office told us they don't do testing but they directed us to the second office saying that's where testing is handled.

4. The second office too absolved themselves of that responsibility and directed us to NCDC National Reference Laboratory, Gaduwa.

5. We visited the NCDC NRL. On getting there, the security at the gate informed us that a lot of people were there too earlier in the day and were turned away. That they don't do testing for individuals unless your state took your sample and submit to them.

6.They refer us to a circular posted at the gate and told us to contact the FCT Epidemiology team lead on COVID-19.

7. When I called him I introduced myself by name and then asked him if he's the FCT team lead on this issue. He answered yes. I then asked him how do I go about getting tested. He asked who are you? Who gave you my number? I told him I'm an Abuja resident and his number is on a circular at the NCDC office. He told us he doesn't know. He said we should go to NCDC. I told him but they referred us to you. He was silent. I then asked him to advise us. He told us to go to "National Health Disease Control" which doesn't exist.

I will send a copy of the circular to this forum.

Obviously they are doing selective testing which is dangerous.

It means a lot of people might have been infected already but for lack of testing they are moving about infecting others.

While the information from the official channels are saying people are not coming forth, the truth is that people are going but are been turned away.

And I know because I was turned away first hand.

It also tells you that either the NCDC are lying to us or they are not coordinated at all. How will you explain three branches of the office each denying responsibility and pointing us to the next instead of just explaining to us the laid down procedures by the NCDC

https://m.facebook.com/673827759324224/posts/3897292313644403/
They don't want to get exposed to the virus too. Everybody dey scare. But they should have attended to you to curtail the spread.

That person seeking a test right now is an unserious fellow. They are only testing those with symptoms such as fever, cough and body aches who may have been exposed to an infected person. There are very limited number of testing kits to go around, so yes of course screening is selective. Even in America and Europe, they are only testing people with symptoms, so why did your friend think he can just get tested like that?

Dont know why we behave this way.the test kit are not enough.going about all those hospital exposes oneself to the disease. Why do we continue to look for what is not missing.the symptom is similar to any other ailment so if you are not expose why test.please let seat in one place and forget all these child play and notice me.this thing is real and sometimes deadly

But of course, that's another story though...

That's what we are trying to avoid. Though Italy has two crucial differences 1) a large proportion of the population has the income to travel out meaning that they have travelled to places like China as tourists and brought the disease with them and 2) 25% of the population is 65 and over...and they are the ones dying the most from the illness.

But it is going to be tough. Health budgets in this country aren't up to $1 billion. Italy spends up to ten times that...and even they are struggling.
No ,it's not going to be tough, it's going to be a disaster . We are still down playing this thing.

Thank goodness the virus did not have vaccine yet, only the few connected people will be able to access it in Nigeria, some will even get it for their unborn children while the real patients can't find a way to it. If they denied you testing it was their loss, just go into self-isolation if you think you are exposed and your family members might be infected, you will see the symptoms yourself in few days.

Do they know if the person has come in contact with an infected person? They should first interview the person and ask some relevant questions before deciding whether he should be tested or not rather than avoiding the person.

But our useless politicians can test as many times as they wish even their family members

And why didn't they (NCDC) make it clear to them, why directing them from here to there each office absolving themselves of their duties without no concrete info or explanation

Anyone defending this should have his head seriously investigated.

U just said what i have always mentioned. Our immune system has become so toughened by constant exposure to germs and other similar viruses like common cold virus which is similar to the corvid 19 so that this new corona might not really be that terrible on us.
The virus is in a greater percentage of people but it is asymptomatic
do you know that this same malaria that is easily treated here kills asians easily? people need tounderstand that different races respond to different viruses differently. if we are to be realistic with our se;ves , we will know that by now this virus don spread to like 30% of naija population but people are not just showing symptoms

You are right Op. A lot of people already have it. We have tested just over a thousand, and we have 100+ positives. That's whopping 10%. God forbid, if we are going on that 10% rate, that's 20m of our population. Italy has 10%, Spain 7%, Iran 7%, United States 1.5% death rate. Those are advanced countries, imagine what could happen in a country that can't boast of 1k ventilators, adequate Doctors and Nurses, the death rate can't be less than 30%. 30% of 20m is 6m.
Our leaders have failed and "aso o bomoye mo". We need a miracle. Is either our immune system help us or weather that won't let the virus stay longer on surfaces or supernatural power or the advanced world quickly come out with a solution. In the absence of any of those, we are in a very big soup. Remember, vaccines take at least a year to pass several tests and trials.

Nigeria has a young population and most people would not have serious symptoms unlike European countries such as Italy and Spain where people live very old and they have a lot of old people.
When it comes to viral diseases like this, the most important factor in surviving is how much resistance your immune system can muster and that's an advantage for a young population like us.Most people with the virus are never really treated, they just stay home and the virus would run its course and go and so most Nigerians would not even need treatment so the effect of the poor health system would be limited.

What I am trying to say is I don't think we would have more than 10-15 % mortality rate

If you have symptoms and travel history you will get tested.
Must it be only those who have travel history?. If the mode of transmission as widely believed is anything to go by, then we don't need to strictly test only those that have travel history.

Are you sure you read that post before commenting? If you don't know were you can be tested now you don't have symptoms, is it when you're as good as dead that you will be attended to? He ask the man in question what the procedure was but he referred him to non existing facility. Was Choima, Davido and son having the symptoms before they where tested?
