southniyikaye:I have never laffed this hard in my life because this was exactly my experience first time I ever did any hard labour like working in a sight. everyone kept warming me, "you go faint for site oh", " call your family na make them help you, " you too soft for this kind work". well I proved them all wrong but for two days I couldn't leave the bed, if I tried to stand up, it was as though 10bags of cement were put on me. |

Hunger wired me from my Part 1 in d uni. no good cloth, I can remember a day I took my only shoe to a cobler and he rejected it, I couldn't make friends,. until part 4 dat I went for I.T , then I stayed with a brother for the 6 month I.T. I was feeding fine for that period. before i went for I.T. I used to think that I was not strong enough to do building work (labour). but during my IT in a (construction company), I saw the way ladies were working on site , I was challenged. so immediately I resumed school after IT, (now in part 5), in order to liberate myself from the hunger that had been wiring me for the past four years, I visited a site in the school where a new lecture theatre was being constructed to seek for job. I was hired, we worked from 9am to 8 pm. I was carrying concrete in head pan on my head to the upper floor. I almost died, but I didn't have option I was the first person to arrive site d following day. I did that for d whole of my final year. Anytime there was a break between lectures , I would rush to d site pack like 100 blocks , bath and go for another lecture. I emaciated and pple were asking me what was wrong. Its a long story but I ensured I made a 2:1 |

emerged01:Don't mind @Juanmike and co that are saying it's a fake story. It's just a sign that they're many people out there who haven't tasted the real Nigerian hardship. Lemme paint a picture in your mind. At the tail end of last year until early January, many of my former colleagues lost their jobs in a particular bank and some people's means of livelihood were taken away from them due to government policy (Opay and the like). Fast forward to March this same year, COVID-19 set in and we were asked to stay indoor for 6 weeks astretch in Lagos. Has anyone imagined how family breadwinners who had lost their jobs were able to provide for their families? Matured men turned beger when situation became unbearable. Being an ordinary Nigerian or a common man under the current economic realities of this country is close being a course. |

southniyikaye:For one, I am going to congratulate you on taking the initiative to try any form of work to make ends meet. You are a lot better than these scammers and able bodied beggars who infest this place. Second, the work is not one of showing strength, endurance, stamina or any other physical attribute. The guys you shared an environment with have put in years into the work. As such their musculature and energy reserves have adapted solely to the work. I had the same challenge when I first started. It was the men who eventually gave me tips to survive for the long term. They first have to warm up to you before they consider helping. It’s really fvcked up that menial labourers are paid so little. The effort they put in will earn twenty to forty times the amount you got paid and on a daily basis. Sha, this is Africa: labour is the cheapest commodity due to our high population. |
