The thing is, I have never gone to search for a job in my life, while in school, I was into photography so I used that to sustain myself.

After school, I worked in a construction company and I later had my own company and had almost ten employees. Well last year I lost everything and reality dawned on me.

I have too kids and a beautiful wife to take care of.

Now to the main koko. Am 6.2ft tall and faaaaat but now, the fat Don turn fitted when hunger Wan kill me so I set out to job hunt.

After series of trials and interviews, job no enter o. Least I forget, I fresh small, OK I resemble butty pickin.

Begged family to raise me to start over, found none. Close friends nko, shishi dem no fit raise me and sincerely I didn't blame anybody after all no be dem cause my wahala.

So I set out to do menial jobs, the ones I could find was bricklaying or packing of block. Anytime I get there, their response is always, SHEY I THINK SAY U FIT DO THIS KIN WORK? YOU THIS BUTTY PICKIN
OR I SABI THE KIN WORK WEY YOU FIT DO.

TRIED series of places, it was the same response until one Man decided to give me a trial.
First job was to carry sand from point A to point B. I almost fainted but was doing strong man cos all eyes were on me.

Secondly I was asked to bring cement now this is the funny part. One very tiny guy called levels was the one bringing the cement, not more than 5.6ft tall, as in tiny o, so seeing him, I believed it will be an easy task and I tried to carry 50kg bag all by myself, I couldn't even raise it to chest level when I scatter for ground and everyone burst out laughing. Tried severally to no avail until someone helped me.

Now after mixing, it was time to serve the bricklayers. Worked from 8 till 12 and I was already having Back ache and Head ache. Infact all my body was aching and I told them I can't continue. They should give whatever they feel like giving me until they told me if I didn't finish with them till evening, no kobo for me.

I Sha manage work till 7:30pm and they paid me 1700 instead of 1500 just to pity my condition.
I was bedridden for almost three days after

I have never laffed this hard in my life because this was exactly my experience first time I ever did any hard labour like working in a sight.
everyone kept warming me, "you go faint for site oh", " call your family na make them help you, " you too soft for this kind work".
well I proved them all wrong but for two days I couldn't leave the bed, if I tried to stand up, it was as though 10bags of cement were put on me.

First job I ever got paid for was painting apprentice. After secondary school wey man no get admission in time due to jamb and post jamb issues, man thought of getting something to do while seeking admission. First I started as an aluminum apprentice with one of my uncles. Most of the time there’s usually no work and we just sit all day till evening, I got tired and stopped going after some time. Shortly after one bros for area then that’s a painter called me and asked if I’ll like to go on painting jobs with him that I can learn and earn some stipends. I agreed, the first job I did with him was to paint one first bank branch at apapa or there about. The job wasn’t a big one though, we were to paint just the gate and fence. At the end of the day I got paid 500 naira. Man was happy, at least that’s my first ever wage. The money sef I later dashed it out to someone, no be say na big boy I do o, the person actually needed it and I just gave it out. I went on a second job with him, the job was 2-3 days we slept over at the site, that was a big job, painting a whole duplex I think at magodo. At the end of the 3 days I got paid 1,500 naira. Man wasn’t so happy cos I expected like 3k, but e no matter. We went on a few more jobs until i found another job as a waiter. Those kind of waiters that serve at parties. The first job was 1,200 pay after some hours of work plus nice food. I was so happy, 1,200 in one day.

I did that job for about 2-3 years going to different places and learning some culinary skills alongside. I had to quote the job when I gained admission and never looked back to doing it again.

While in school I did some businesses just to make some money for myself cos I’ve been a very independent person, must be due to the fact I spent 6 years in boarding school.

Now we thank God for where we are, when I look back at the meager amount I earned then compared to what I earn now and my expenses I just smile.

Still growing though. We’re not there yet but we’re grateful.
But bro this your story happened a very long time ago
When #500 ,#1200,#1500 was still very much valuable I guess cause I gave my junior bro #200 one day and he collected the money didn't even say thank yougrin

Hunger wired me from my Part 1 in d uni. no good cloth, I can remember a day I took my only shoe to a cobler and he rejected it, I couldn't make friends,. until part 4 dat I went for I.T , then I stayed with a brother for the 6 month I.T. I was feeding fine for that period. before i went for I.T. I used to think that I was not strong enough to do building work (labour). but during my IT in a (construction company), I saw the way ladies were working on site , I was challenged. so immediately I resumed school after IT, (now in part 5), in order to liberate myself from the hunger that had been wiring me for the past four years, I visited a site in the school where a new lecture theatre was being constructed to seek for job. I was hired, we worked from 9am to 8 pm. I was carrying concrete in head pan on my head to the upper floor. I almost died, but I didn't have option I was the first person to arrive site d following day. I did that for d whole of my final year. Anytime there was a break between lectures , I would rush to d site pack like 100 blocks , bath and go for another lecture. I emaciated and pple were asking me what was wrong. Its a long story but I ensured I made a 2:1

Don't mind @Juanmike and co that are saying it's a fake story. It's just a sign that they're many people out there who haven't tasted the real Nigerian hardship. Lemme paint a picture in your mind. At the tail end of last year until early January, many of my former colleagues lost their jobs in a particular bank and some people's means of livelihood were taken away from them due to government policy (Opay and the like). Fast forward to March this same year, COVID-19 set in and we were asked to stay indoor for 6 weeks astretch in Lagos. Has anyone imagined how family breadwinners who had lost their jobs were able to provide for their families? Matured men turned beger when situation became unbearable. Being an ordinary Nigerian or a common man under the current economic realities of this country is close being a course.

For one, I am going to congratulate you on taking the initiative to try any form of work to make ends meet. You are a lot better than these scammers and able bodied beggars who infest this place. Second, the work is not one of showing strength, endurance, stamina or any other physical attribute. The guys you shared an environment with have put in years into the work. As such their musculature and energy reserves have adapted solely to the work. I had the same challenge when I first started. It was the men who eventually gave me tips to survive for the long term. They first have to warm up to you before they consider helping. It’s really fvcked up that menial labourers are paid so little. The effort they put in will earn twenty to forty times the amount you got paid and on a daily basis. Sha, this is Africa: labour is the cheapest commodity due to our high population.
