I went to school to study computer science and all they taught me was pascal and statistics, useless things I already know. After graduating I had to learn programming on my own. Most of the people who taught me how to code didn't even attend Uni themselves.

I studied Mass communication, we weren't even taught on the prominence of creative writing, proofreading, copy editing, reporting. We were just given definition and explanations, what about the practical aspects? They just gave us stupid textbooks teaching us dumb histories, that won't help me in real life.

Just imagine if my university taught me how to become a perfect editor, with intensive practicals, I can proudly call myself an editor? Self development made me intellectual not the university.

it is the same thing in Europe. You teach yourself all you need to know. You are also paired in your final year project to learn about team work. So is not peculiar to any country.

u meantioned creative writing, proofreading, copy editing all these are done in English studies but not mass communication for a reason . A news editor can be anybody good in English , I know of a friend who studied linguistics who edits short articles. But an editor is on a different level . An editor , edits both news , articles , books, speeches etc
