Episode 17- The Aftermath

Bukky

All eyes were on me. They wanted me to say something after the prolonged silence.

“ I know we have lost good men today. Brothers. Sisters. Partners and parents today. But all hope is not lost. ” I began.

“ They served their country well and will live on forever in our hearts.”

I put my emotions in check, trying not spill my heart's content.

“ As heroes.”

“ Now please, get back to work.”

I noticed that Ife was not in the room, I wanted to ask Itoro of her whearabouts but that was adding salt to injury.

I left them and joined my convoy. Drove home to my official residence. Along the corridor, I had a crazy thought of what may happen if I failed. I almost cried. Well, I need him now. Sammy is the only one to confide in- I went straight into my chambers where I met him reading a book.

Hmmh. The old Samuel I know always reads when he is happy. What could this mean? I pondered.

SETH

After escaping the battle zone, my demons did not spare me. They haunted my mind multiple times, running through the chambers of my head like little wicked foxex.

I was on a call with Rumeh Kadiri and the young man told me that the Alpha was pleased with the outcome of the events. The news was indeed favorable.
Favorable? Well I dont know. Maybe.

Yet.

Just yet, I was not so pleased withthe outcome of this one.

“ I know.” I said to Kadiri on the phone, “ The victory was ours from the beginning. Only this time, it came pryhically.”

I paused to allow my guts sting deep. I am not the type of person to regret actions but now, I did. Only for a split second, I did.

“ Dont you dare! Ray!!!”

The memory zapped through my subconsciousness.

Upfront the highway, was a police road-checkpoint. It was normal to find one on this Benin– Uromi highway.

I hoped that these men were not aware of the Mayhem that happened earlier this morning at the Benin City, the capital.

I hung up on the call. A thought crawled on the surface of my mind. I glanced at the boy’s necklace. stripped the chain off and the pendant– bullet– piece relaxed into my palms.

The only means of identification left on the boy was the agency ID Card. The one that bore “ Contract agent”.

“ Stop! Came an order from one of the men who were on road Check. The man had an umbrella with him. It was pouring down steadily.

Without saying much, I let the boy step out with the ID around his neck, oscilating back and forth upon his black hoodie.

*****
At this moment I remembered Ray again. When he raised his gun to shoot this young man and I told him not to.

He had refused and admist the confusion, a bullet went straight into Ray's head from nowhere. At the same time a thunder roared in the dark skies.

Blood splatterd all over my face.

Ray fell unto my arms and slumped dead to the floor.

In shock I stood and turned asking “ Who did that?

My men where clueless.
Then the gunshot came again, another member of my team fell.
We all ducked in anticipation for more bullets. I though maybe my sniper guy had lost his mind.

“ What the Bleep was that?. You crazy? I asked him through the intercom.

“I don't know. That wasn't me. Shit! ” He screamed into the intercom.

Jerry looked straight into my eyes. He signalled himself to be innocent.

“ Can you see any one? Find me a location. Where? ” I asked him through the intercom.

“ Whoa! hold up I just did ” The sniper guy said “ I can't get a clean shot. Look behind you, at 4 o'clock".

Only now did we realise it was a prison warder who had shot Ray. The man was hiding behind a truck.

He tried to shoot again. His gun clicked.
At that moment another thunder clapped.

“ rrrr....get him!” I yelled. “you importent rat! Get him!!

My men fired several shots at the man as we ran after him in cold pursuit.
In anger, I released a slug and it cut him through the thigh. He fell.
Bullets rained on his vest from behind. One particular slug cut through his shoulder region.

Yet I was not satisfied. I ran up to him, turned his face so I could see it.
I was amazed. What!? You? Screw you.

“ I paid you. The Alpha fuxking paid you. You traitor” I said and slapped my pistol on his cheek.

He laughed and spat blood unto my face.

He said with blood in between his teeth“ Go fuckx yourself"

“ Fool! you work for me. Not them” I said in anguish and slapped the pistol again on his teeth.

The aftermath was him losing two of them. They broke and fell into his mouth. He choked, before coughing them out.

Blood stained my face.

In groans , he laughed as life escaped his body.

I left a bullet in between his eyes, accelerating the process.

Letting go off his collar when he dropped desd on the cold tar, I rose to my feet and could not think of anyting else but the fact that one of my plans had failed.

“Arrrrrrrrrrghhhhhhhh!!!!” I screamed.

Then again as I looked up to the dark skies.“ Noooooooooo!”
Rain torrents began to drop upon my face. Dissolving the blood stains.

************
“ Stop!” The officer's voice brought me back to the present time.

“ You know what to do.”

Jerry nodded

“ Be quick.”

Jerry climbed down the vehicle and approached the police officers.

I watched the boy gesticulate and explain to the men on blue and black. The boy was really smart. Who wouldnt want such a smart kid on their side?

Minutes grew and my patience petterd out. It even skyrocketeted to brimstone clouds of anticipation when the officer in charge drew a walkie -talkie near his ear. The conversation was inaudible.

The man stared at Jerry, shook his head and continued with more questions in defiance to eveything the young man said prior to that moment in time.

These seemed like forever. I romanced my fingertips on the pistol under my sit.

My other hand stroked the fine carvings on the necklace. ( The one I reaped off the boy’s collar)

If worse came. Bloodshed would pave way for us. My men are ever ready.

At the moment, the man whom the boy was talking to, approached the vehicle to do a thorough inspection. This gave him the priviledge of looking intently at the faces of all eight passengers.

When he got into a gaze lock with me, the officer became startled. It was for a split second, but I read the man’s reactions. Not because there was no blood stains ony face and cloth again( I cleaned up everything and used my coat to cover Ray back at the spot he fell and died) but because he must have seen something in my eyes.

I smiled in a bid to put the man on a defensive side.
“ Afternoon officer” I said.

“ Afternoon bros. How work? ( Bros is a slang for brother) The man replied.

“ Fine. Man must wack( Man must make a living)” I said in response.

The officer followed with more pidgin English. “ Abi na. Na so e be ( Obviously. Thats how it is.)”

He continued “ Just make sure say e reach my hand small o” ( Just make provisons for an extra stomach)

I understood. I fickled four five hundred naira bills into the palm of the officer. A smile came afterwards. And raindrops were a testimonial to this.

The man graceoulsy collected the bribe.

“ You're too much.” He complimented.

After this, the man left and rejoined his group, searching other vehicles on the highway.

Jerry climbed back aboard the vehicle again. Smoothly, we troded along toward our destination.

I finally released my grip from the pistol under my sit. With a sigh of relief, I settled down.
What a day... what a day indeed.

BUKKY

My wrist watch showed the time to be just a minute past twelve in the afternoon. It was still Tuesday. And cloudy but no signs of rain here.

I had gone into my convoy. Drove home to my official residence. Along the corridor, I had crazy thoughts of what may happen if I failed this last test. Tears escaped my eyes. I sniffed them back in as if they were in my nose.

Well, I need him– so he was the only one to confide in– even though she knew he had been cheating on her with the dead Stella Chaltone of the American Embassy– I still need him.

My security men paved way for us through a lobby and no one spoke a word of meaning. Just walkies grimming on and off “ Potfron coming through... Over...” “ ... Parameter safe for entrance...over”

And the regular,“ Your excellency which I got from my house- hold staff. To this, I did not reply either. I went straight for my chambers and met my husband reading a book.

(Hmmmm.) The old Sammy Alakara, I knew, always reads a book when he is happy. What could be the source of his joy today?

It would make perfect sense if it helped to eleviate my mood.I smiled briefly without his notice. The book was inbetween his palms and a crossed leg hung over another. The position was perfect for a king.

Kome my personal chamber maid was busy with chores: cleaning and and dusting of furniture in the sitting. She had just dusted a stool where Sammy placed his foot.

“ Thank you, so much. Kome.” Sammy said with a sinister and over-appreciative smile.

I frowned to this.

I'm particularly pained about his death too. But it's obvious he'd be trouble for them. If you check h^ was wasting too much time and stubbornness has a price too. Well I don't really blame him. Nature had to balance itself. Mathew dead, Ray gon^ too. Now we'd focus on Jerry and Seth. We know there is something about this two.

If you read where you said “ keeping Jerry alive my be their undoing....

Also even before these.. Remember Jerry told the president that he ain't afraid of death. Freaky shit there. Giving his reply “infact he had romanced her three times that even th^ devil her husband and hell will reject him. If he ever went.

Takes some voodoo shit.. Or God's mark upon an individual to utter such with audacity.

Episode 18- Black is the new beautiful

Bukky

It sure was something else from jealousy. Okay it is jealousy. Okay it is not. Sometimes, I feel pity for them instead of jealousy; especailly this young lady, Kome , who, right now, is in her thirties.

I unbuckled my wrist watch. Admired the arrangement of books and cushion pillows. And the books too. What wonders my books did for me. Everything sparkeled with greatness.

Sammy must be feigning ignorance of my entrance. Or he wasnt even aware.

The door closed as my security guard left the large sitting room. It was like a magnificienct squared palace. The types you see in movies. Only our great african nation could afford to erect such a masterpiece from scratch, amazingly in nine months.

“ Afternoon your exellency” Kome’s voice echoed immediately she spotted me; after turning away from the big window pane at the west end of the sitting room.

The woman went down in a gesticualting motion of respect towards my direction.

In my mind: Life would have been better for this woman if she had been educated, at least to S.S.C.E level.

My husband would have a different opinion: School is scam. He’d say a wife should be a home keeper and know how to cook and please her soulmate in every way possible.

Sometimes, I wondered: What if Samuel made passes at the beautiful but naive Edo girl, Kome? What if?

I wouldnt be surprised now if he did. He better not get caught in the act.
.
Samuel pulled her out of her thoughts with a warm sexy“ Hey babe!”

I smiled half heartedly. Only if I could just pour it out. All of it. But these walls, just like Sammy would always say: they have ears too.

I waved at Kome. My gestures were routine now and the lady understood. “ A drink from the bar, Please”

“ Yes ma’am” Kome said as she made way obediently, head bowed and almost into her shoulders, towards the bar.

What terrible things that lack of confidence and low self esteem does to uneducated people. Especially the female gender.

I have been doing alot of thinking today.

But this one I had to still think about it: After these crisis, I will make efforts to enforce a bill concerning the compulsory education ( and scholarship) for every girl child.
Even if I am no longer in power as the head of state, my political influence would be enough. I will stop or reduce human trafficking too. Among women and children. But one step at a time.

“ You are disturbed.” Samuel Alakara said. “We can talk now or continue this convo later if you wish.”

“ hey look here! Whats up? He said and dropped the book.
I nodded sideways.
“ Okay!” He chipped in and continued with his book.
“ Do these walls really have ears? I began. “ Do you think someone is watching oir every step amd move?

“ Why'd you ask?” He said.

Kome had returned with the liquer bottle and glasses.
I collected one glass and poured myself a cupfull.
“ Just curious. But before you reply” I said “ Start by telling me what yoh wanted to say in the carbinet meeting yesterday".
“ You call that a carbinet? Sammy began with an outburst.

“ Oh here we go again. Enough already! Please. ” I said “ I dont want to talk about what I should or shouldnt be doing in the discharge of my official duties. You think its easy making decisions?” I did not glance at him“ Then think twice”

“ I knew it! I saw this coming" He sighed after a while and continued with his book.
Then he closed it. I know he is angry. He tried to open it once more. No way! He cant go past a single sentence with anger. He finally closed it for good.

“ I saw on the news. ” He began“ Im only a bit too worried but yet happy that you didnt listen to me. “ He paused “ Again for the third time-- you know what?... Do what you please from now on"

“Really? I uttered. I was going to tell him about my impeachment looming around the corner but I let it pass

“ And just because we are still talking , doesnt mean we are fine–” I started before I was cut short by a sound.

A cell phone rang into the silence of the air.
“ Where is that coming from? I asked as my eyes locked in with Sammy's and then at Kome's.

I returned them to Sammy. “ Wont you pick it up?
I realised it came from a drawer in th art ardoned room divider. It had silver wares on its shelf which cost me a fortune to procure from south Africa.

The object of attraction continued to ring inside the drawer.
Samuel hesitated.
Impulsively, I rose to my feet and went forward for it.
He did the sam, even faster as he quickly grabbed the cell phone after I pulled the drawer open. My fingers barely glazed the cell when he whisked it, agrresively, away from my reach.

He retreated and picked up the dialer.
Bitter rage grew inside me. I paced the room, wondering if he had other female flings aside from Stella.
************

Narrator.

Pain ripped his white face and literrally turned it greenish- purple. His eyes grew dim. He knew why the united states president refused to get involved with all these mess. His daughter had been stubborn. If only he had been extra careful. She would have stayed clear, and off the basement in their home for good.

Now it is terrible. She amplified the gadget.

He reckons. The US government had compensated him handsomely after his laboratory had been torn apart in 1993. They rewarded him with his heart desires: money and travel, to go places with his wife. He wanted her to have everything but the fact that he was impotent, made life miserable for him.

The only two people who knew about this were Lisa his wife, and Stella his secretary whom he confided in. Both were dead now with the secret remaining hidden forever. Or will it? He wondered.

Stella was a very quiet person but it would be too safe to assume that she kept her mouth entirely shut.

And then Lisa, his beloved wife. What if she had been clueless and told Kelly or even one of her few friends?

Then it eventually struck him that, in the first instance he should never have allowed her nursed another man’s sperm cells. Even to think he let her have initial thoughts about it alone drives him nuts now. They had done the surgical procedure many years ago when he visited Nigeria as a consul.

Another man's sperm fertilized her ovaries.

She preffered the welcoming culture of the locals. There and then, she decided she wanted a sourvenir. That was when the idea crossed her mind:
“ Edgar... I want a baby” she said

“ Oh! A baby” He repilied “ We have talked about th honey... The doctors aaid in due time.”

“ Forget what the doctors said, sweet... I want one now. Please.”

“ Okay! ” His response was expected.

He gave her a rose he picked out of a bunch from a vendor's table. He paid the dark skinned woman and told her to keep the change. Then he grabbed Lisa’s arm and gently gave her the rose.

They walked on in the streets of ikorodu, Lagos. The year was 1994. For a second, she did not get her mind off the topic as she kept the converstion alive ,“ Black is beautiful. I love their skin color. Eddie, you love it too, dont you?

“Sure” He had no reasons to argue. “Black is the new beautiful” He responded, having no clue what that even meant at the time.

Indeed. And these same black people were making life so beautiful for him. Terrible and beautiful as it stands now.

The Black man who had donated sperm cells for the procedure remained annonymous. The doctors said it was best for everyone and assured them of his healthy lifestyle.

That was how he lived, loving the daughter of another man only because he wanted to do anything to make his wife happy.

But when Lisa passed, he blamed Kelly for everything.

He hated to love her and not being able to give Lisa other children before she died, made him weary. How she loved her daghter, made him angry.

Now, these same black hospitable citizens of this black nation had taken away the only gift he had always wanted Lisa to have. A child he could not give her. He had lost her. Both of them.

“ Damn it! He muttered as he wiped a stroke of tear trying to escape his eyes.

Earlier today, he had arrived the Yellow tower of the DSS with President Bukky Alakara. He had watched as her VP mocked her. He respected all the efforts she was making at bringing back his daughter. She sacrificed her men to meet with the requirments of the terrorists.

So far, he had nothing short of respect for her. Now he would contribute his own quota. He would mobilize his men at the Embassy led by Gerrard Finder to join forces with the DSS Marshals in their rescue mission.

He stood from his chair and paced the emerge room 001. Then back to his seat, lost in deep thoughts as he watched private Itoro Abasi giving Gerrard a gps tracking device. He also told the soldier about an ejectable memory core.

He remembered the memory core. It was very important and must remain top priority for the rest of their dealings with these terrorists.

Gerrard walked towards him. Itoro had walked away.

“ Worry not, sir” Mr Gerrard Finder said. His hand rested on the man’s shoulder. In a soothing manner.

“ You will see her again. Im certain”

“ Make the sonnoffabitch regret ever taking my daughter.” Mr Green began with his choleric temperament , “ Make him regret the day he was born. In split seconds, make him...” He adjusted his tie, dragged Gerrard a bit further and stared into his eyes, “ Make him wish for death. But dont let him have it.”

His eyes went to the Gps device. “ And one more thing.”

The GPs blinked as Gerrard waited on him to speak up.

*****
ITORO

I left Gerrard after giving him a GPS tracking device. I had instructed him how the cordinates worked.
Then , I left the man and went in dearvh of Ife.
If not for anything else, I had to keep my promise to Late Matthew.

“ ...And keep her safe. Let no harm come to her".
His last words before we path ways.
My instincts took me to the lavoratory and I heard someone sobbing. . .
I knocked.

The story continues....

Episode 19- Temper... Temper!
Itoro Abasi

I knocked again.
A female voice said “Go away!!”
I recognized it. And the more reason why I had to stay, the more reason I became urged to reply “No. I won't!"

I told her that she had been in the lavatory for almost an hour.

She laughed. Resumed her cries again until seconds later when she drew a long sniff; Exhaled just before the weeping stopped. She came out of the convenience room and walked past me. She walked towards the white tilled walls of the lavatory.

Ife dusted powder onto her face and washed her palms.

“ Do you still think this is just a movie?” She asked , “ After everything. Are we going to see our dead friends again?

“ Movies are scripted. The best stories drain their characters emotionally."

“ Then... I was just using... Just ” She sighed “ using the toilet”.

“ Dont hide the feelings. ” I said “They are so real now... That I can't hide mine...”

I went on to tell her that I'm not an atheist, or someone religiously less- inclined but I still believed that life is a big movie and she tried so hard- so hard to be the best actor right now. I went speechless for a while.

“ I wanted to... I wanted to intervene. Honestly, I did-”

“ Why then?

“ Because Mathew's orders were: do not interfere. He knew what he'd be signing up for and he took it. He knew it may come to this and he took his chance. He had many choices... Many” I paused.

My voice reduced in volume“ But one worked... For the greater good. Not the best but for the greater good.”

Ife glanced at me as she wiped her palms with a stride tissue. “ I can't believe you are talking in this manner.”

She broke into sobs again. Then stopped. Then continued.

“ Think about Matthew- " I began “ About all those men who laid down their lives today, so we can have this conversation. The pain in –” I paused “ They are the real heroes. Not you. Not me, not anyone in this building. They are the real actors. . . the best... And sometimes, heroes fall. They get killed and they die, but their sacrifices never go un-rewarded.
Ife could not hold them back any longer. She let the tears flow.
“ I don't know-”

“shhh–" I said and invited her into my embrace, only feeling a bit guilty as to the manner in which the opportunity posed itself. Not by taking advantage of her weakest moment. Not by this. I pushed her off slightly but she drew back into my arms on her own accord.

“ It's okay.” I said “ Dont cry. Tears won't bring him back now. I know you loved him. Same here. We have to live and fight for what he died for.”
At the moment. My mobile phone rang. I dipped my hands into my coat and provided the mobile, sliding the dial rightwards before saying.“ Yeah?
“ okay. I'm on my way!"

I led Ife into to the emerge room and left her there. I went to report to the acting Director of the D.S.S, Samantha Walsh who had earlier called. She met me in the lobby and stood in front a door.
“ What you are about to see” She said “ Keep it top secret"
“ Sure” I said.

Sh e ushered me into a room. In it, just one guy controlled the systems. They had surveillance cameras scattered all over the Villa. It was from this control room that my boss Mathew and I had spotted Jerry when he tried to elope with Ife.
“ Come ” She said
The guy amplified the video surveillance in the president's main sitting lobby.
She was arguing with her husband. And the audio was audible.

“ Why show me this? I said
“ I don't have enough level clearance to see such footage”
Samantha Walsh said “ Congratulations. You just got promoted...but there is more. I want you to see this..pay attention.”
We kept silent and watched.

********
Bukky
The call ended. My internal tussle began, tried to hold myself from asking or maybe lashing out.
My momentum diverted towards my chamber maid.

“ Komeh!”
“ Yes ma!”.
“ Leave us! "

The poor woman scurried towards the door.
“ No” Sammy grabbed her arms “ Komeh stays”.
“ I said : Komeh, leave us" Raising my voice “ Now!”
The swiftness of the lady's palm when it broke free from Samuel's grip overwhelmed me. The door shut behind her.
“ Bukky! " He exclaimed. “Not again. Let's not do this. The walls have ears... Someone maybe watching...”
“ I don't care!”
“ Well!” He began“ If I must...It was your V.P, Mr Chukwuebuka.”
“ Really? What did he say?
“ He was on his way to the Villa, to extend his sympathy and commiserate with the families of the deceased...”
You are lying. “ How can you look me into the eye and lie so easily?"

I grappled with vigour and held onto his wrist, made attempts to get the phone. The cell phone went crashing to the floor after a struggle of wits. The bottle of Amarula cream landed on it and everything went beyond repair into shreds.
“ Arrrgh! I exclaimed as my arms went up to my hair.
I wished God could pat them and say to me “ Child. Calm.."
“ Our father in heaven” I uttered without force, slipped into a chair. Buried my face into my palms before saying “ have mercy"
“ Cant believe..that you will cheat.. Sammy... And still have the audacity to lie to me."
“ I can explain–”
“ Explain what? Arrgh. I thought after the American Secretary...oh my God... I though you'd come clean and confess your sins.”
“ What?... I don't understand" he said.
I went on to say I wished I had killed the Stella of a person, myself.
“ Urrgggggh!!! Can you just– " He barked“ Can you just ...just shut up! Keep quiet. And listen... Listen.. Listen... Bukky.. Listen”
“ Oh really? Temper... Temper! " I replied “ This is nice. You killed her. Didn't you?"
“ No!” He uttered “ I did not”
“ Yes you did!
“ No!”
“ yes you did. Say it!
He asked why he would admit to such. “ Oh Bukky, don't make me do this. It's not fair!”
“ Neither is it dark. And yes you must. Say it!”
He turned away.
“ Dont you dare turn your back on me.!"
He looked at me “ Maybe it is you... who shouldn't... turn her back on me!”

I grabbed him by the tie.
“ Admit it!”

“Bukky.... Let go. Let go off my tie." He said “ Stop putting words into my mouth. Stop this" He struggled.“ Let go. I'm inno-”

“ Liar! Whuuuu! Ole!_( thief!)” I let go of his tie and collar, only to grab it again after clapping loud. He must have felt relieved, not knowing that a mightier tornado was incoming.

“ Say it! Say it!”

“ Okay! I did... I did. Yes I did. You'e happy now? He uttered “ I killed her!”

Shocked. I became dumbfounded.
I glanced at Samantha and the guy in the control room.
“ Did he just?--" I asked.
“ Yeah” Miss Walsh replied. “ He just did!

Episode 20- Say No More

Bukky

Arrg! Gbe body eh! ( Move your body!)...Sammy...Kuro mbe!( Get out of here!)” I exclaimed “ Heiy!!!"

I tried to catch my breathe when I hit his chest, my grip on his collar slacked. I found my palms navigating for a surface to hold onto. Finally, I reached for a seat.

“ Have mercy on me lord!” I began with an in coherent vocal chord“ For I have sinned...only you can save me now!”

He tried to touch me.

“keep your filthy hands to yourself”

Traumatized but not deterred, I kept mute.

He broke the silence.

“ Wait! I don't understand...” He said “ I..I.. ai.. are.what..I don't understand.. Are you accusing me of cheating?

“ You? He stepped backward with a sour grin on his face. I could tell he was furious.

“ You?

You, whom I married because I had pity on, that no man will ever meet up to the standards placed by your parents... The expectations... You? Who barely has time for me or anyone?

“Someone I grew to love...while she grew wings? He continued “ And I watched as you devoted time into decieving people; faked charity giveaways; had church facilities and public amenities named in your honor.."

He sighed “ The headlines bore: Bukola A. Alakara, the Ideal Politician” He demonstrated with a wave.
He scoffed.

“ Wow! Really? ... Wow!" I exclaimed in shock.

“ Yes. ” He replied with disdain “And no one cared to find out how you got here! How you treated the man who " had pity on you”.

He emphasized the sentence with a frown and hissed.

I don't know why he chose that word, but certainly it's a fowl one for sympathy and I wished he could just stop.

“ Are you really saying these to me? To my face? I asked.

“ Yes”

I left my palm on his cheeks.

He thanked me but said “You don't know...Do you?

He went on to tell me that I did not know how much he had sacrificed into making this work. He paced inches towards me. I withdrew from his reach. He motioned his right index finger.

“ Whatever you are today... Bukky.. I paid the price.”

At those words, I went blank in thoughts.

He continued “... Yes... I've killed. I've plundered... I've lied... I have stolen... I have even slept with the devil.” He said “For you Bukky. Just for you...”

“ Keep quiet Sammy” I began.“ Enough!”

He stared at the walls again before replying “ No. I won't. You wanted the truth. It's bitter but I will tell you–”

“I said quiet. Enough!"

He continued in defiance. “ The assasination attempt on your life at Benin City. You want to know?” He asked “ I staged that too. I did. It was all me. To make you look like a victim against your opponent and ensure your re-election"

“ What? You wanted to kill me?–”

He snapped. “ Well now! I wish you had died a long time ago.”

I couldn't believe this anymore. I paced the room. Figting with my ego.

“ No– no–. Stop. Just stop. Tell me you are lying. I will believe you.”

“ Lies are sweet. But the truth... It's a bitter pill”

After all I've done for him. This is how he repays me?

“ Wait! What are you saying? Samuel what rubbish are you saying?

“ Rubbish? This is not rubbish. This is karma. Justice and equality. I will tell you–” He continued“ Years ago. Abuja Demolition. 2003. Rings a bell?

“ What about it?

“ Oh! You forgot? How you disobeyed me?

“ How? What does it have to do with any of this?

He continued “ Everything. In 2003 you hurt a young man named Fejiro and his brother. Their parents lost their lives in the Abuja Demolition. Which I personally- warned you against.”

“ So..this..All these..? It's about Revenge? I asked..

“ And more. I'm sick and tired of your mind games. I'm tired..."

I scoffed. I could feel my knee caps vibrate. Pain surged through my heart. I'd be lucky if I go through the next five minutes without a heart attack.

“ What? What the-- I --- ” Half laughing and half confused“ What?? ... Are you kidding.. You ”

I began to laugh more. Then it turned to tears. I stood up only to slump right back into the seat. But I did not faint. No. I wished to stay awake. I had a feeling I was dreaming. I cupped my face into my palms and lifted my head once more staring strangely into his eyes. Maybe this was all a dream.

Then gradually I stood up, holding the words in my mouth. My lips must have been vibrating. My finger pointing at him and trying not to say offensive words.

“ You know what? I said amidst tears and laughter. “ I'm grateful for all you have done...everything... and you will be rewarded. I swear by everything I hold dear.”

He tried to speak up.
“ shhh” I cut in“ Say no more. Lest you provoke my spirit ”
I walked out on him. Tears swelled up my eyelids. I wiped them away and made for the door.

“ Are you okay Ma? One of body guards asked me when I opened the door.

“I'm fine.”

I ushered two of them into the large hall.

“ Do not take your eyes off him" I said “ If he tries anything you find funny or offensive. Shoot him... But not to kill..”

They nodded.

I stared at Samuel who kept silent and looked at me with so much regret in his eyes.

I may have heard a lot but at this point, the only word that escaped my mouth after watching this footage, summarizes everything going through my mind “ Damn!”

******
Jerry

The Necklace Seth had ripped off my shoulders oscilated back and forth upon his own neck. He wore it so proudly but there was regret written all over his face.

We had successfully passed through every hurdle and arrived a small town called Uromi, in Edo state. The heavy downpour was in no rush to subside any time soon. We drove all through the town and left it's outskirt towards another smaller town named Ubiaja.

When we reached the boundary between the two towns, Seth told the drive to make a right turn as we approached and overhead train bridge. The rail way tracks ran all the through from the northern parts of the country towards the Niger Delta. This bridge was just a tiny mark on the long line.

As we turned, Seth eyes caught mine when I noticed a sign post which reads “ NIFOR Branch office Uromi - Ubiaja Road)

After two hours of frictional driving along a slippery and muddy pathway, we arrived a small village. Drove through it and passed another sign post which reads “ Welcome to Udo Kingdom, Igueben, LGA, Edo state"

The convoy took a left turn at a T- Junction and then down another slippery and rough terrain. On both sides of the pathway, water ran in forceful amounts inside eroded gutters.

All these while, no one said anything. Not even a word to each other.

Another right turn and the cars blasted into a thick forest reserve in the community.
Thirty minutes later, as I checked my wrist watch, we arrived our destination and all climbed down.
