Hello Mr Jidestroud, I dunno if your neem formula will work for my Soursop tree, there are small ants, that brings out whitish stuff, that kills the fruit as they are developing, any help from others will be appreciated, what can I use to kill this?

Any commercial pesticides should work just fine. I hope it's not a case of your fruits turning black and falling off. That's anthracnose fungus I suppose. If that's the case, you can also include any copper based fungicides.

Nevertheless, Neem oil will work in both cases.

PEPPER

Ameeeen!!!

Note at all. The Neem oil is powerful enough (Note, note Neem extract from the leaves oooo). All you need to add is liquid soap for the oil to stay. Well in my case, I discovered that Super grow does the work perfectly for me. So that's my only addition.

Tomato farming during rainy season isn't for newbies biko. Especially if you intend using organic approach on a commercial scale, abeg, think again. Even the likes of padma & cobra won't survive the rains without proper management.

(I hope that answers the many questions I am getting through mails)

If the boss @jidestroud permits, I would like to say this from the perspective of someone who started trialing tomatoes from market wash and plant seeds before using improved varieties. I still be learner o!
In June 2015, I decided to plant Tomatoes at my garden in the peak of the rainy season. I went to the market and got all the beautifully shaped tomatoes I could lay my hands on, I extracted the seeds and put them in the nursery bed outside, they grew beautiful, I quickly transplanted about 196 plants(no manure, no nematicides, just fertilizer) into a raised bed system with short trellis sticks.
Then my problems began to manifest, some plants were stunted, some had colouration on the leafs, some just wilted, some were just too tall(more than 5 feet) but fruits were just too heavy, they broke the plants. I used bicarbonate, streptomycin, lactobacillus (believe me every method I found online, I experimented with them). After all the suffering, I am sure total harvest if measure would not have been more than half 20L paint container. I learnt some lessons from that episode and I am still learning
- Your success or failure starts with the seeds
- Endeavour to use seeds that are known to survive open field cultivation during the rainy season
- If you don't know the growing and fruiting habit of your cultivar, you are on a long thing
- Don't use market wash and plant seeds at all for tomato cultivation except it's a garden
- If your plants are stunted at the nursery stage, you have lost major battle
- If you don't stake your rainy season tomato, you have lost another battle
- Space properly
- learn how to stake different cultivars appropriately
- If you use organic methods for rainy season commercial cultivation, shocked shocked shocked shocked ?
- Don't joke with manure and fertilizer application
- Prepare to spray your farm bi-weekly with fungicides o
- Don't plant after June, the northern tomato will arrive by November till February in huge quantity
- Last year's and this year's trials are the best I have seen in tomato gardening (AVG fruits per plants last year was above 25, this year may AVG above 35-40 per plant.
Above all I am still learning what works and doesn't

Day 29: (My Garden at a glance)

Finally, it's the 29th day into my experimental garden. More veges keep finding their ways into my heart (Cucumber and cabbage).

Review so far on planted vegetables
1. Fluted pumpkin (calabar / ph type)
2. Lagos spinach (soko)
3. Tomato (Rio grande)
4. Sweet corn
5. Cucumber (Murano as given)
6. Efo green (tete)
7. Cabbage (F1 Victory)

*additions for intercropping are:
1. Basil
2. Lemon-grass

*Ewedu plant (Weed that grew on it's own)

My tomato has simply stolen my heart. So healthy and strong. Now to a high of 7'inches. Should be going into the soil in another week or so. I just pray the Basil makes it in time, because I have to intercrop the two together to safeguard my tomato from pest.

Pls where can I get tomatoes seeds, pepper seeds for home gardening in pots. I live in Lagos. Thanks.

What part of Lagos so I could be more precise about the places I know closest to your axis? Moreover, you could checkout any of the legit agro stores online and get it delivered to you.

Organic cucumber and rainy season can hardly be used in the same sentence! But just restrategize and you will succeed. As for the watermelon, I think the right word I should have used was staked watermelons not vertical. Getting bamboo of the required strength is the challenge for now, but i will definitely do my best to inform you on happenings

Land preparation in anticipation for my tomatoes. grin

One of the few things I give utmost attention to, is the soil I intend planting on (not too particular about seeds any longer jare undecided ).

What bothers me now is; how rich is my soil in organic matter? Because, soil organic matter increases soil fertility, improves soil structure, retains and stores nutrients and water and gives a favourable media to plants my tomatoes over a long period.

Moreover, mineral fertilizers are only as effective as the soil applied on. So I simply load my soils with more than enough compost manure. Fertilizers does not help in the least way, and over time, the soil becomes bad. For a pro organic farmer like me, organic methods are the best way to improve soils. Compost, animal manures, mulches etc all contribute to the building up of soil organic matter which is what poor soils need most to improve before talking of adding fertilizers.

Next priority is disease management.

Bn so preoccupied with setting up different aspects of my projects; from the goats to tomatoes, poultry activities and recently my rabbits (more on the rabbits later). I can barely keep up with the pace at which things are moving so fast angry .

I also got the hybrid maize seeds given by the Lagos State Government to 650 farmers as palliatives for the ongoing planting season.

The hybrid maize variety is supposedly resistant to Downy Mildew Resistant (DMR) and Leaf Streak Resistant (LSR)–Y (Yellow) diseases.

Note
Na buy I buy am ooooo... Palliatives keel dem dia. 5kg precisely was purchased to be used for an acre.
