CHAPTER THREE Only the sound of different sewing machines was heard in Bari's shop as everyone was working. She had four apprentice who were diligent with their work. Six sewing machines and three industrial machines were appropriately kept in her big shop, it was a warehouse though the reason it was big and accommodated a lot. Each and every one of the girls had their positions with their machines. One side of the shop, she hanged different clothe materials for sale and also to be used by her, the big basket where the threads we're been arranged and to every other material related to tailoring. She had included Tailoring material business to her tailoring skills, one needed to have different source of income, according to her. The big Ox standing fan sending chilling waves into the shop. Five dummies stood outside with five already sewn clothes worn on them for people to see and patronize her, just like every other Nigerian tailor would do. Her shop could only be described as "Fully stocked". "Ola, how many inches did you use for the full length of madam Gloria's gown?" Bari asked one of the girls over the sound of the sewing machines. "I used 59, Ma" she stopped what she was doing and stared up at her madam. "does it have any cut? what style are you sewing?" Bari asked, she had already stopped what she was doing and had her focus on the girl. "It is a straight long fitted gown, Ma. It has an under breast cut" she carried the cloth to meet Bari where she sat. Bari took the cloth from her and turned it around for scrutinization. "That's good, you are learning fast, i love your stitches, very neat and tight" she complimented the girl who had smiles all over her face like she had won a lottery. "Thank you Ma" she replied and went back to continue with the sewing. Bari continued with her work too humming occasionally. Someone called her name from outside the shop, she took her head up and smiled at the person. "Best friend, how are you doing?" Chioma asked trotting into the shop. "Omo Igbo, welcome" Bari chuckled. "How are you doing?" Chioma asked slumping on the chair adjacent to where Bari sat. "Am fine my dear, this one you came by this time?" Bari asked, abandoned her work and supported her jaws with her right hand, a gesture that screamed "Am all ears" to Chioma. "Nothing ooo, ehen, how about my clothes? are they ready yet?" she asked blinking her eye lashes. "It is remaining just one, i will finish it up by tomorrow" Bari replied with a shrug. "Which one is it?" "The poka dot material" Bari replied. "Oh, that one?, which style again did i give to you for it?" she asked. "You said you wanted a flay gown, you don't even remember the style? child of the world" Bari laughed. "My dear, I brought so many materials to you, so I have forgotten some of them. Ehen, that aside, i have a big news" Chioma said dancing a little on her seat. "Tell me, tell me" Bari said excitedly. "Am going out on a date, tonight" she stood up twirled around a little and sat down again. "Wow, am happy for you best friend, so who is the unlucky guy?" Bari laughed out loud. "Don't let me invoke the anger of Amadioha on you" she laughed too. "Okay, who is the guy? when and where did you meet him? it seems like i missed somethings" Bari asked leaning on the machine with her two hands supporting her jaws. "Well, i met him at the supermarket, we bumped into each other and then we exchanged contacts" she replied with a smile. "Am happy for you, best friend, i pray this one lasts" she sighed. "Pastor Evangelist Ma, well done ooo, you that is praying for me, how many boyfriends do you have?" she eyed her briefly before laughing. "Oh, common, that boyfriend thingy is not for me now" Bari replied shaking her head sideways. "Best friend, you need a man, you need to marry some day, you know?" "I will, but not now" "Okay, when?, before this year runs out right?" Chioma asked with a smile. "At least in two years time, i will be ready" Bari replied her with a wink. "Blood of Jehosaphat" she shouted, turned around and looked at the girls who were all busy with their work, she whispered to Bari "two years what?, babe? do you realize you will be 30 by then?" "And i will be fully ready and financially stable by then, am making plans of buying a house and a car" She sighed. "Which one is house and car? babe that will repel important suitors away from you, leave those things and get married first, you can buy them while in your husband's house" she advised. "Chioma, i need a car. do you know how scared i get each time it wants to rain and am outside my home? what if i board a commercial vehicle and i see something that will trigger my episode? i will now disgrace myself in front of everybody?" she hissed. "But what if you go to the hospital and get yourself checked? you are really suffering" Chioma said, pity in her eyes. "Hospital? is it not too minor to go to the hospital for?" she sighed. "Just go and check first, you never can tell" Chioma shrugged. "Okay, i will go tomorrow" she replied her letting out a full breath. 9 Likes 2 Shares |
