I owned my first phone in 2003 just after SS 3, while I had 3 guys in my class who had phones since SS 2,so owning a phone back then wasn't far-fetched.

Men don dey use Trium phone for 2002... Phone + Sim was 16K... My guyz owned it...

Until the 2003 - 2004 madness of purchasing Sim for 25k and above... I bought a used Sim for my sister for 18k... grin

I hate to argue personal details of your life with you but you really need to check your dates Sir.

Dude, I got into pre-degree in 2003 and had a lime-green 3410 (a slight upgrade on 3310), so I'm pretty certain of my dates. As at 2001/2002, I had three guys in my class in SS 2 with phones - 3310, Sagem and cant remember the 3rd one. In 2003 when I got into uni, 98% of the population had phones. By early 2004, a number of folks at school were using phones like Side-kick, Nokia Ngage, Nokia 3650 (curved bottom) etc.

Those days were brutal mehn! I remember in 2001after their final exams.. Na so people begin fly their colour, dey parade with guns for broad day light, dey salee, dey shoot for up...

Oboy, we come shock say all men for geology department be system men, and dem plenty for that department ... Even the ones wey we dey reason as worthy children of God...

I learnt to take the average Joe as a cultist on campus.. to avoid challenging death unknowingly....

A BAN friend of mine was exterminated by the SVC a few seconds after having a little chat with us.. As we take 4 steps like this, na gun shots.

We didn't know the guyz chilling 2 cars away were angels of death... They shot him point blank on his chest and casually walked away with No fear.. No rush.. No hazzle...

We later got to hear, he was a part of a hit the previous day and they had to take him out..

I've got a funny question

Do these cult guys snitch on themselves or what? If they pull a successful HIT, how do their rivals know who and who went for the HIT... Then track the exact guys down and kill them too

It's truly weird

So, some background to my story would be appropriate here.

1995 to 1999 were the dying days of the military. As at when I entered Ife in 1995, General Sani Abacha was Military Head of State (no time for any Presidency nonsense then). He ruled by military fiat.

Those days, Vice Chancellors of Universities, especially those of Federal Universities; and more especially those of the big 5 - Unilag, UI, Ife, Uniben and ABU - were appointed.

In those days, that meant you had to have connections in the Military Junta to be appointed VC.

We heard from the rumor mills that Professor Wale Omole was a close friend of General Sani Abacha. We even heard he was one of the privileged few who could walk into Aso Rock to see The General without a prior appointment.

I am going somewhere.

So, it's just normal that no VC would want any Students Union to pour sand in his or her garri. No VC wanted funny security reports reaching the Head of State.

We heard from the rumor mills that there were SSS agents always on these big campuses. Recall that during this period, the agitation for restoring the June 12 mandate was going on.

So, VCs wanted Student Unions that would cooperate with them and keep their campuses peaceful so no funny reports gets to the Military; which in turn means they can keep getting their subvention funds and cover their overheads and pay University staff.

Unilag has never really been a hotbed for cult violence. In the 90s, they had alot of cultists but much of the fracas then was mainly SUG related.

I would say 'Yele was able to create peace between all the parties, he didnt really eradicate them. Even 'Yele is suspected in some quarters. Remember Prof. was at his trial & also if you google the photos, you'd notice 'Yele dressed abit funny on that day & the photographs caught some spooky handshakes. All that could still be wrong tho.

The eradication of cultism in Unilag was in '99 after it was established boys in Unilag organised the OAU incident. The then VC initiated a fierce & vigorous anti-cultism exercise. The heat became too much for cultists & alot of them renounced at events organised by the school. The cult groups tried to fight back but the school won. Final nail in the coffin for cultism in Unilag was the abolishment of SUG.

This is my opinion based on experience & the little info at my disposal.

In his case, It was a students dominated area and someone saw him drag a sleeping XYZ SVC member (unserious or what you call a good cultist) to be killed.

Atimes, they could catch a rival and force him to spill some names....

But OAU Ife students, the militancy was just too much.

I will give an example.
I remember my first semester in school, authorities released Mid Semester test time table with one week notice. Mid semester tests accounted for 30% of the marks for every course.

Ife students said no way, nobody will write the test. How can school authorities release time table one week to test date. Students Union blocked all major routes to the academics area: Fajuiyi Hall road to SUB, Angola-Moz-PG Hall-Moremi Hall - White House route and Staff Quarters to Faculty of Medicine route.

And then there was "maximum shishi" for the stubborn ones who succeed in sneaking into any of the testing halls.

Ife authorities had no choice than to give another 2 weeks before the tests could hold.

When incidents like this, that disrupt the school calendar happens, the security report gets to General Abacha and the VC is usually queried. Understandably, Professor Omole didn't like this.

So he made sure he buttered the bread of the Students Union. The Students Union budgets were always funded. Students Union had operational vehicles. Professor would show up at Congresses.

School authorities - Students Union relationship was a Tom and Jerry relationship.

It was a terrible progression of their violent conflicts.. That is what happens when drug addicts are on rampage..

The cults did go after a few but a lot of people renounced. They couldnt possibly kill everyone of them.

Also the ones who had renounced were providing info to the school/police on the others who didnt.

Not really true.

In places like SS.....u can't totally renounce and still be living in that area.

If u are going renounce.....make sure u are moving to another location.....and try as much as possible to keep a low profile.

Places such as Benin and PH......is a crazy place to renounce cultism and still be living there.

You're right tho. Being in Lagos & its location (in the middle of the town) doesnt favour certain acts. There's an army barracks 5 mins away. Police response time is less than 30 mins. Plus most student live on campus. I could ago on & on. Unilag is not the ideal rugged cultist settings.

But even in Uniben, it can be done. Where there is a will, there's a way.

First of all,I want to say a big shout out to everyone here it's been a good job.

To all d doubting thomases what do u expect?do u expect them to tell u d exact story of how everything went,it's not done that way.just get the point n move on.

I just want to butress d point of what majority have said on this thread n I believe majority have collectively agreed that cultism is bad.i won't really bore u with the death stories cos we all know it involves death but I will tell u just two cases I know fully well.

To avoid supremacy battle of those who might want to argue about cult n their strength I will use A n B to represent the two reigning cult during my days in school

B4 I gained admission,I always check on my cousin in school n he like flexing n girls to a fault but he hates cultism. Anytime we are on break in school I will go n spend few days with him in school n he was always telling me d dangers of cultism though I wasn't really bothered. One faithful day when I went to check him,we were just hearing gunshots continuously like an hour after people who rushed in were just explaining the gory things they say in school so my cousin took me there to see it too.

It was that day that I realised d human eye is almost d same size with egg buns,I saw human brain on d floor n it was also that day that I realised there's no difference between cutting a cow at abattoir n cutting human flesh too.i couldn't eat meat for like a month cos anytime I see meat it's like I was about to eat d flesh of those guys on d floor,it was too graphic.

That's just to tell u that I have a first-hand experience of what cultism is,so when I gained admission I knew cultism was out of it irrespective of what happens. My best friend then let's call him Terry,he loved power n influence,he's the kind of person that always wanted attention.

Terry has been nursing the ambition of joining cult but he couldn't tell me despite d fact that I didn't tell him my experience with cultism, one day he finally brought d idea of cultism n I told him no point blank, based on d fact that he doesn't have a brother figure n no first hand cult experience n he wanted to b rugged he joined.

Then we did a little biz n we made money,so we decided to get reasonable accommodation,Behind it up n get nice wears. we did that n at d beginning Terry was happy he's finally a strong man n he enjoyed it then,it got to a stage one of his brothers(what he calls his fellow cult guys)started staying with him,b4 we could say jack Robinson they are now 5 staying in a room,he wasn't comfortable with it but since that's what he signed for he couldn't tell them.

It got to a stage they started messing up d whole place n it was becoming unbearable, his girlfriend stopped coming cos he was always scared of those haggard looking guys. He lost his freedom cos he couldn't walk freely again especially when there's HIT or little ish in school.

It got to a time in school that only non cultists can do things freely in school,u hardly see cultists n when u see them they are always in droves n always security conscious.

Terry stopped going to school cos there was no one to mount guard for him,he couldn't go for exams cos hits n counter hits everywhere. It got to a stage that any guy u see in school moving freely during hit is a Jew cos d strong men go don take cover n lecturers didn't help them too cos majority fix tests during hits n hits must happen when exam is approaching (only God knows y).

Terry has moved from a fine boy to a rough boy with many useless cuts due to different cult fight,he now looks rough n rugged with thick black lips n ingredients of bad life. Terry belong to cult A,so one faithful day cult B caught them unaware n killed many of them. The news was everywhere on campus n I was worried for my friend,I still loved him irrespective of his choice in life.i tried reaching him but it was going through,I had to call someone at home who told me they saw him n immediately I traveled to just see him n b sure of his condition. When I saw him, we had d ffg conversation

me- guy how far,how u take escape?
Terry-see my guy Na just God,cos we no know say anything dey xup n me n one of my brother's dey chop for d same plate for backyard n two others dey watch film for inside d last guy don travel

me - so how did u escape?

Terry - those guys jump fence enter n Na immediately them shoot d guy we dey chop together,I picked race n some followed me n they were shooting at me at very close range,i couldn't believe none of those bullets hit me cos it got to a stage I thought it was my ghost that was running that my body is lieing lifeless on d ground cos I never believed I could escape

me - so how did u get home?

Terry - I didn't run towards d main road n my mind was telling me those boys will b waiting for us at d park so I ran to one not too busy road where I saw a tinted glass car with d sticker "clergy" I approached d man n I told him I just escaped from kidnappers.the man was skeptical at first n he was suspicious it could b a set up to steal his car so he collected my phone n put it off.Could u believe as we were moving I saw all those B guys waiting at different strategic places n motor parks to finish us off,we got to a place d man's wife wanted to buy something n he had to park,I was looking at some of those B guys waiting under a tree pretending to b travellers.
That was how God save me. He told me he later heard those guys killed his two brothers watching film inside his room

Terry's year in school was wasted, his father disowned him after hearing d scenerio n it took another 4 years b4 his father accepted to send him to school again.d last I heard from him was that he's just in 100 level now in one University in South west.just imagine n there are many deaths that I don't want to bore u with, many that it got to a stage nobody dey paste RIP for anybody again,Na just rip on phone, nobody dey cancel lecture again if Dem drop anyone for dept,I could recollect a time they dropped a guy around 9am n we had class around 11am same day.
