I was in your situation few years ago when i got here. Mortgage was my goal but i needed to build my credit score to achieve that. I registered with ClearScore and they gave me tips on how to grow my score, my first credit building card was pre-approved on ClearScore. With a credit limit of £200 i started my journey.
Tips:
* register on a free credit score app
* apply only for pre-approved credit cards
* if you use your card wisely, you could end up not paying interest (that worked for me)
* avoid close-spaced hard searches.
You already said you are registered on electoral roll so that’s great. It might take up to four months before it reflects on your score though. All the best

This here is golden! Thanks for sharing. Let me add one or two from my own experience.

1. Pay off the balance (not minimum) everytime on due date by direct debit.

2. Plan the usage and payment intentionally. Don't leave more than 25% on your statement. You can use 80% of your limit but just before your statement closing date, pay off until 25% balance is left, then pay off in line with point one (1) above. Do this at least 4 days before that closing date. This is month one. In month 2, let the closing balance be slightly less than 25%, say 24.8% and continue to reduce this every month.

3. Take an overdraft from your bank and use it on the eve of your monthly statement closing date. Use only small (say £5) and pay the interest. If you plan to repeat this, use the pattern in point two (2) above.

This is how I managed to build my credit score and it was ready within 6 months of my arrival. This was possible because my employer provided an Amex card that I was responsible for managing in month 2 of arrival. I applied for my personal Amex card, 3 months later. In less than a year, my score was more than enough to get my most priced asset yet.

Be intentional.

You don't mean it. shocked
Could it be from your browser history? Surely nairalanders do not have your personal contact details.

Nah! nobody gets your personal details from your browsing history, they may have an idea about your interest/ life style etc.

When you reply innocent looking pm here you are giving up your email address..that is a starting point for many dubious characters here..

No I will try them. Thank you for testing the waters for me.

I tried two if the recommendations I got yesterday but it was a dead end. Moneymarket and clearscore require a residency status of at least 3 years which isn't possible now.

I honestly don't understand this system of credit in UK. Getting a credit card in Germany is like a stroll in the park

What kind of support were they supposed to give? I have never heard of any company that helps you apply for a personal credit card.

Hi everyone.

I need to renew my passport. I've registered, made my application and paid online.

I didn't get any notification on how to book the London appointment for biometrics. And I cant find the info on the website.

I know the High Commission hasn't opened yet, but is there something else I should do?

Hello house, please I need help with credit card. So I have been in the UK for about one year now and I have been using Hsbc.

Each time I apply for a basic credit card with them, it keeps been rejected stating my credit record. The strange thing is I have never owned a credit card and I have tangible savings.

I have tried to do a credit check with Experian but they seem to have no record.

Is there a way I can get a credit card or fix this issue going on? I want to work on my credit score in preparation for when I decide on getting a mortgage soon.

My first credit card many years ago when I was an innocent international student was a Capital One credit card with a credit limit of £250. I naively thought it was free money, my own share of the British national cake. I blew the whole £250 on food and other expenses and threw away the card. £250 turned into £450 many years later which I had to pay off before I attempted to get a mortgage. That £250 was registered as a default on my credit file for years until I settled it. It was only after I settled it, my credit score started started going up, and I then got a mortgage and other 'normal' credit cards.

However, Capital One and Vanquis are the go-to credit cards for most people new to credit. Use them and pay off at the end of the month. Give yourself 6 months of consistently using and unfailingly paying them off. Use a broker like London and Country (fee-free) and apply for a mortgage, you will definitely get accepted. You might not get a decent mortgage rate of below 2%, but you can always remortgage to a decent rate after 2 years.

Yep that's why security through obscurity is a thing.

Once an attacker know what to attack, half the job is done. Targeted phishing and brute force attacks can ensuite.

This one niaraland doesn't have 2fa, the day your NL email gets to the wrong hands wonders shall happen

This is serious jamb questions.

You have to contact naira land support for that.

The only way I can help is if you send me some 6 digit codes you receive on your phone.

Don't worry the codes are for a referral program

Hello everyone.

Please, regarding passport renewal at the Nigerian High Commission London, are people who did not apply for passport renewal before lockdown allowed to apply?

According to the information available on the website, renewal has only commenced for those that applied prior to lockdown in order to clear the backlog of applications.

Currently reside in Swansea and would not want to be refused upon arrival.

Kind Regards,
