On this note, I'll like to ask 'What age were you when your parents stopped flogging you?'
And also, 'What age do you think is the right age for a parent to stop flogging the child?'

As for me, I think i was 12 then. My mom would use different tools like garri turner, slippers, cane, etc. Looking back now, I know it was all to mould me into the gentleman I am today.
As for the second question, I think the flogging should stop before the child gets to senior secondary level so he/she won't develop an everlasting hatred for you (the parent) cos that teenage age can make or mar your relationship with your child. The child can be disciplined via other means, but not necessarily flogging.

The average Nigerian child experience their first abuse in the hands of those that should protect them. I might get insulted for this but ever wondered why the average Nigerian is so aggressive? It all boils down to upbringing like the one we saw in the video posted earlier. Children are individuals with minds of their own and the best way to raise a child is to win that mind over with any means but intimidation and force.

I tend to agree with you.

But at the same time, flogging a child is, in my view a way of showing the child the consequences of bad deeds in a 'controlled way' so to speak. A child flogged for stealing would associate stealing with pain, then avoid stealing, then would grow up not to steal and avoid the consequences of being caught for stealing as an adult ..where parents cannot protect him or her.(in theory!...reality is a lot more complicated).

Sadly there is no 'perfect' system of discipline.

I can't really remember the age...seems like round 17 or 18 years.....

My parents never spanked us but there are other kind of punishments we went through like not allowing us to go outside the house (grounded) or not giving us pocket money nor listening to music and watching TV. That's more painful to us than spanking and that's the way I deal with my kids.

Hatred for parents is not as bad as the victim developing a sense of worthlessness which will affect the person's self-confidence and self-esteem ultimately destroying the person. It will take divine intervention for this type of person to fit in well into the society meaning that hatred for everything and everyone ( including parents and siblings) will be X10.

Most Nigerians are not doing fine.
The oppression that started at home has seeped into the society like an oil spill.
