The average parent would take delight in making sure that their children are scared of them - by employing different means from emotional to physical abuse.

It affects child - parent relationship and sometimes, it is too late before the parent realises it.

I cannot say the best way to raise a child as I'm not close to being there yet, but I believe whipping is plain wrong.

But physical fight continued till 19-20. Generally when a child clocks 14 and above or when puberty sets in he begins to feel he's above flogging. That's why you try to flog some kids and they hold the cane or restrict you from flogging then.. . I don follow my papa fight gidigbo before... From 21 to over 30 years now we just shout at each other on the phone when there's any disagreement.

Generally I think this African idea of flogging or physically assaulting a child is pure stupidity and inhumane. If you raise a child like an animal, then expect him to behave like an animal. Children like that end up being child abusers and wife beaters. There are different ways to correct a child, physical assault shouldn't be an option.

Stop promoting abusive parenting, kids that went through such will also want to use same method on their own kids too and the cycle continues.

I tend to agree with you.

But at the same time, flogging a child is, in my view a way of showing the child the consequences of bad deeds in a 'controlled way' so to speak. A child flogged for stealing would associate stealing with pain, then avoid stealing, then would grow up not to steal and avoid the consequences of being caught for stealing as an adult ..where parents cannot protect him or her.(in theory!...reality is a lot more complicated).

Sadly there is no 'perfect' system of discipline.

That's taken under the assumption that they're rational and will beat you for things such as stealing.

I never stole money, neither did I steal meat from pot or any other thing whatsoever yet I was beaten more than my peers who did.

My parents never beat each other and they corrected us with love not hate. So I grew up knowing the difference between correction and vented frustration.

The day i left secondary school was the day they stopped flogging me. As for that trending video the girl's age is not the problem but the reason why she was flogged like that. Some offenses are just not worth that energy abeg

First born received best beating from parents,last born don't really get beaten all from parents but sometimes he get it from the older siblings

Forgotten my age, but the last I remember was when I was watching Godzilla on cartoon network at my neighbor's house, my dad handcuffed me to his bed used cable wire to flog my life to relegation, still kept me there, his meeting people came and saw me, I was freed after the meeting but couldn't walk properly. I'll never forget that and will never do that to my kids ever. Funny part is, he even denied doing it when the issue was raised last year. Everyone at home had to remind him before he said "okay, maybe I did it, can't remember" kids that grew up with dads who are in the force or military are the real MVP.

My mum beat me once. Not really a beating. She dragged me outside and hit 2-3 times. On another occasion she slapped me. Both times I deserved it.
That's it!

My dad slapped flogged me once. And slapped me twice. The last slap I was 14. Each time he would apologise. He hated beating his kids but would sometimes lose his temper. Shouting was his main stay.

Spare the rod and spoil the child. Africans parents need to augment in their training of child to reduce all the social vices we are having in our communities especially in the area of a boy child. We are talking of discipline as a growing up child. Whatever anyone chose to do as an adult is a different thing entirely.

The generation running our government today were highly disciplined or they are highly disciplined in terms of proper upbringing.

Instead of blaming the people, blame your system. Even at age 90, you are still not above discipline. But the system provides cover and immunity for corruption.

The average Nigerian child experience their first abuse in the hands of those that should protect them. I might get insulted for this but ever wondered why the average Nigerian is so aggressive? If you disagree with them, they retort to insults? Even wondered why the average Nigerian is very afraid of telling the truth?

It all boils down to upbringing like the one we saw in the video posted earlier. Children are individuals with minds of their own and the best way to raise a child is to win that mind over with any means but intimidation and force.

We have to break the cycle of Abuse!!
We must evolve to a better and greater society!
When you flog a child, you are not teaching them to not repeat same mistake, you are teaching them to make sure they don't get caught!


I challenge every Nairalander to take a different discipline approach this week! If your child mess up, call him or sit, sit them down and explain to them why what they did is wrong and why they must never do it again!! Give them one week punishment of dish washing and take away their phone or game or whatever they really enjoy with the promise to return when they behave better!!

It's this same Advice of yours that some parents follows, only for them to spoil the child in the process. You can only try by that, some children aren't moved by words. They do what it's in their mind. There are some things parent has to do, you beat the child, after some hours you called him/her to give the best Advice as a parent.
It's now left for him to make use of the advice but you have corrected him for the mistake been made earlier.
It's when I gained admission into University that is when I understand "Wasiu Ayinde Song" , "Iya mi baba won bi mi Da, Emi gangan Mo tun tun rabi, nitori e loruko mi shey n ga si" . In English (my mom and Dad give birth to me, but I had to rebirth myself in behavior, attitude, and other elements of integrity because of that I'm going higher in my endeavors). I'm the only one that knows how far my attitude has brought me closer to people who want to give an helping hand.
