The question that is begging for answer is that; Is Akwaugo really cursed, or is it coincidental?

Finallyyyyyy Mezie has become a pupper I just pray he won't commit suicide.

Thanks OP for the update you are blessed

Chapter 26

She convinced herself she was doing the right thing but her heart couldn’t stop rioting. She squeezed her eyes shut, clenched her teeth and let out a soft sob. It was for the best; her curse should stay with her alone. Her gaze swept the room, the luxury, a place that would have been her home- their room. Sniffled and wiped her face with the back of her hand.

“Come, sweetheart, we have to go now”

She picked the blabbing baby up. Levelled her face with the little girls and kissed her. The baby scrunched, lips curled down, ready to let out a protesting wail

“Shi, don’t cry baby…we don’t want to wake daddy up now”

In the next two hours, it would be midnight. Akwaugo hardly slept at all. The state of her mind didn’t allow her. the more Morgan cared the more she feared. Morgan- smiling his way through the news and many calls, checking on her every minute like he had a hint she would run away from him. “things happen my love, and people shouldn’t die because of something as little as a burnt house” he’d say to her before kissing her good night. What if someone had died?

People shouldn’t die…the reason she should get away from him. she soothed the little one, patting and bouncing her gently until her face relaxed and the little lungs settled.

“I can’t leave you with him, my love, I will die of loneliness” she stared into the baby’s eyes “I hope you will understand when you grow older” she balanced the baby in the carrier fastened around her, pushed a shawl inside her already filled bag and quietly left the room.

She had no intention of returning to Nnewi, how could she possibly go back to failure? The mockery would be too much to bear, Mazie would pound her and justify his action. When she crept out of that room, she had no idea where she would go and what she would do, she only knew she had to get far away from the man who had loved her so much, that would be the best way to love him back- leave, run and never look back.

She would walk and walk until she found an apartment where he wouldn’t find her, she didn’t know how long the money in her account would sustain them until she would be able to get another job, one that wouldn’t require a certificate and would allow her to come with her baby.

The beam of light from a laptop providing the only light in the big sitting room and revealing a figure, seated, leaned forward with eyes fixed on the screen got her frozen mid-stride. Her breath caught on her throat and escaped as a wheeze, he flicked his head to her direction, eyes looked her over- moving from her face to her bag, he pushed the seat backwards, moved to the wall and pressed on a switch, the place came alive- flooded with lights, he strode to her.

“Where are you going?” a frown creased his forehead as he stood a few inches away.

“Morgan…” she needed to hold onto something to steady her wobbling legs. Her heart raced, she lowered her gaze, desperately in need of something to say in such an awkward moment as this.

“Are you travelling? When did we discuss this?” eyes squinted, he cocked his head forward-searching her face, seeking for a response he already knew. The baby croaked in discomfort and stirred.

“Morgan…” she propped the bundle that hung in front of her, shaking gently to calm the baby down. “I am sorry…” she quivered.

“Do not!” he cut himself off, exhaled deeply “Don’t tell me you are sorry when I don’t know what you are sorry about. Akwaugo, where are you going with our child and…” he gestured at her bag “…And this?”

“Please understand…it’s not easy for me…” she gulped down breath to steady her trembling lungs. A sudden weakness overtook her.

“You are not telling me anything to understand” she could hear the sound of his heavy breath.

“I have to go…away from you”

His silence was killing her. at the moment- whatever he chose to do would have been welcomed, but this silence…the fire in his eyes sent a discomforting chill to her stomach. He wasn’t making this easy- but what did she expect? He would kiss her goodbye and sent her out with a pat?

“What is this? A joke…is this a joke?”

“Morgan…”

“It’s Morgan now to you, no more Nkem?”

“Please…we need to stay away from each other…” she tightened her trembling lips, she didn’t want to shed a tear now, definitely later.

“Why?”

The plea in his voice drew a sob from her.

“What did I ever do to you? Have I not been good enough for you to consider staying? Am I a terrible person?”

“No!” she groaned “stop please…you have been so good to me that I don’t want to hurt you” she pleaded

“what do you think you are doing now? You are ripping me apart! Godamnit!” Lurched away from her, his forehead pressed against the wall he punched a folded fist.

“I don’t want to bring you more trouble…”

“What trouble are you talking about?” he turned his head, cold eyes fixed on her face.

She released the restless baby and lay her on her laps as she sank her butt on the sofa, juggling the baby with her laps. She turned her face to meet his hard stare, “I can’t stay…I don’t want to bring misfortune to you” she moaned “A lot is happening, things you may not understand. I think I have something following me…a curse…something destroying people around me…”

“…I was able to seal a deal and establish my company in South Africa, a few days after you came here! I got the victory on a case that would have landed me in prison and plunge my company into bankruptcy after I set my eyes on you! My life has been an amazing ride since that day I had sex with you!” he knelt before her, gripping her knees. “I don’t know what destruction you are referring to my love, you have been a blessing…you and our princess” His face softened as he looked at the baby, “I don’t believe in any damn curse”

“But Mezie said…he lost everything…he lost everything as soon as he got married to me”

“Bleep Mezie!” he whipped his head to look at her “He lost whatever because he is an unfortunate being! It has nothing to do with you…don't you see?”

“I am scared” she shook her head “I have to be sure I am fine…that nothing is happening to me. The oath at Okija- it may still be working against me and…”

“I will go down to hell and back for you Akwaugo, and to hell with whatever deity that supports a cruel man like Mezie and his selfishness” he gritted.
He was tired. Tired and angry. She saw it on his face and wished she hadn’t contributed to his stress.

“Is this about the burnt house? I can buy you as many houses as you want in this country- even outside this country, you know I can do that without a blink. Just mention the place and the time you want it beautiful one…”

She blinked away tears and folded her quivering lips. Sniffled, “It's not about the house” she avoided his eyes.

“Tell me, what do you want me to do? What can I offer to make you stay?”

Later, when he had sent her back into the room with a promise to revisit her plea in the morning. She found him by the pool. Slightly cropping the curtain, she watched him from her window upstairs, prowling the deck with his hands on his jaw. Then he stopped, peeled his robe off his shoulder same with the short he wore. Discarding them on the floor, he stood gloriously au naturel. The calm brightness of the moon upon his masculine frame gave him the image of a god. Sinfully gorgeous. She swallowed the fluid that had rushed into her mouth with the lump that had lodged in her throat, dodged her face as he whipped his head towards her window- he knew he was being observed. The sexual interest she had for him had grown with the little time they’d spent together, all they have done was kiss, stroke and heightened each desire, yet no sex. She wanted him as bad as she knew he wanted her, but has been suppressing his desire, “In good time my love, I want to do things properly this time” he had always said.

She peered again; he was no longer looking at her side. He observed the pool for a while and plopped inside the pool, sinking deep. When he resurfaced at the other end, he spat out and scrubbed his face.

That glorious sight didn’t leave her for the better part of the night, as he lapped, her moist core tingled. She tossed and turned, clasping her laps together to ease the tension, then she decided to have a second bath.

Undressed to her panties, she sat- backing the door, she neatly folded the clothes she just removed. She heard a soft knock and he walked in before she could grab a covering. His eyes roamed all over her. he was thinking of her as she was thinking of him- the sexual interest in his eyes which he clouded so fast.

“We will be going to the village tomorrow.”

He walked out, leaving her gasping.

*

One of the benefits of being filthy rich- you can have anything arranged at anytime you want it. He snapped the private jet’s portione, pulled the baby carrier to his side “Smile at the cloud, little lady” the baby gave him a burst of toothless laughter. He adjusted his bulk on the seat and reach Akwaugo’s seat-belt before she did. She had avoided his eyes, turning away or looking down whenever he came to close.

“Hey, beautiful face…” his hands lingered on her middle, stroking the band of her skirt “you may feel a little light-headed as this baby takes off…”

That wasn’t what he wanted to say- and his hand wasn’t where he wanted it to be. But she was doing it again, tucking into herself. Last night he was close to doubting her love for him, but he had gotten the answer after a long swim- she was scared of losing him, would rather give up her happiness to keep his alive. Yet he felt she was being too hard on herself for nothing.

“We would be at Owerri in less than an hour, then we head home from there”

She gave him a weak smile

“You told me last night that I don’t understand, well…I do.” She looked into his eyes for the first time since last night happened “And I love you so much…no…I am crazy about you. I was going to die, if you had walked away”

Her beautiful pink full lips stretched in a smile “No you would not…”

“Sure, I was! You doubt it?”

Her eyes crinkled as her laughter floated like a melody to his ears. “Why would you die because of one woman?”

She had come alive, the glimmer in her eyes, pink on her cheeks…this is the woman he wanted to seat with on this journey

“Not just a woman fine face, my beautiful, sexy, hot, stubborn…”

“Okay!” she lost control and roared, slapping her laps repeatedly “You call me stubborn? I will keep that in mind” she wiped the tears from her eyes, trying to control the laughter.

He watched the contour of her face while she laughed. “I can do anything for you, trust me when I say we are ending this once and for all”
She nodded.

He released her hands, relaxed his back “And the next time you want to peep on a naked man, make sure you don't just stop at peeping. you should try joining the party” he stared at her through the slit of his half-closed eyelid. she flushed and he chuckled.

The image of her arched butt on the bed had not left his thought either.

Chapter 27

It was bad enough that a man should have prostrate, adding stomach ache to his predicament would be a death sentence. Mezie’s gaze swept around the town hall, lingered on Okorie who was slouching on a plastic chair with an air of satisfaction. He unfolded his chair and sank his butt. Yes, he needed to come with his chair- its been like five months since his kinsmen sorted for him, who knew if they had even poisoned the seat they would have offered him, so he would die off and disappear forever from their space.

He felt pairs of eyes on him. not a full stare, but stolen glances, their unspoken sneers and mockery deafened him. he was tired to think about them now, so tired to even think of anything. He scratched his head and coughed. Loneliness had been his dearest friend and he had found peace in keeping to himself. With his money gone and drugs disappearing from his counter without replacement, death would have equally been the best companion- he had not thought deeply about it anyways.

“We heard what happened to you, we are sorry it happened at this critical moment” the chairman started.

Propping his head in his hands he clung his tongue. He knew what they were referring to- the robbery and the disappearing of his money, he wondered how the information sipped out. He had wanted to moan his gradual demise all alone for there was nothing else to live for. Why would they even care?

“No matter what happened Mezie, you are our kinsman…”

“Why do summon me here?” he cut in in a dead voice. The tension in the hall was so thick, it could collapse the entire building. And their presence was beginning to make his skin crawl.

“Well, we are here because of your wife...”

“She is not his wife” someone cut in roughly

Somehow, he felt this new would soothe him well. The Okija priest had promised him- a recompense for an evil wife. He straightened himself on the seat, his heart came alive…

“We called to ask you to…Oh, here he comes”

His eyes followed the chairman’s over his shoulder, was he not…, What is he doing here? A gut-wrenching pain took over him; he felt several pinches in his intestine. This was supposed to be the moment where they would tell him that Akwaugo is dead…okay, maybe that was why this man came. He exhaled and relaxed, the good news would come out and from the mouth of his rival, he would finally get his revenge, blame him for everything and would demand him to pay for everything his family had gone through.

“Yes, our son here has indicated an interest in Akwaugo, he wants to officially make her his wife according to the tradition” the silence was so loud that he heard their different heartbeats. The eyes bore holes on his body and that American goat who thought he could deceive everyone with his pretence sat at the middle, crossing his legs.

“We called you to plead that you accept the bride price back. The family is ready to double the money if that will make you shift your ground”

“You are mad!” he kicked on the chair which clasped shut and hit the ground as he stood up, his nosed flared “Everyone of you here are mad! insane! Ara na apu unu nile! So what you brought me here for is to ask me to relinquish my right as a man to this aturu awusa seated here? Because of what? Money?”

The man wasn’t even perturbed. He just sat there, arms folded across his chest, a smirk on his lips. He turned to him.

“See, nwokem. I don’t know what gave you the idea that a whole man like me would open my eyes and allow you take my wife from me, I would be a dead man before that would happen!”

“You will soon die! What is even left in you? You are already dead!” Okorie sprang up, ready for more bicker, like a man who was waiting for an opportunity to allow his mouth to run.

He would ignore. his problem wasn’t with Okorie, he could handle the wicked man, but he would face this Oyibo returnee and show him he was still a strong man no matter what had befallen him. he would not go down with a fight.

The man stood now, all the kinsmen cast their gazes on him, they would have even kissed his feet if given the opportunity.

“My fathers and my brothers. I am not here to make trouble but to right my wrongs. There is no need telling you a story of what you already know, I only came to ask you people to help me persuade this man to accept the bride price which was returned so my woman can be free.”

“See your mouth! ‘My woman’” he mimicked “Akwaugo is my wife period! You should be talking about how to cleans the land for the abomination you committed! You have been sleeping with somebody’s wife for how many months now? I na akwori ya, ona ato gi!”

“I can swear before any god or deity you people may want to take me to, Akwaugo is as pure as she was when she ran to me in Lagos. I have not slept with her. I know the tradition, and I know the implication. But I want my child now and her mother, that is why I am here before you people”

Murmur of approvals filled the hall.

“Mezie, why are you holding on to what you know you never had. This woman was accused by you of adultery. You openly told us she has ill-luck and you wouldn’t mind if she walks away and never comes back…why do you want to keep her now?”

Because she was the only thing he could boast of as a possession, the only thing he could lay his hands on when everything he struggled for has been taken away. he needed to prove he could still have a family and was ready to accept any condition Akwaugo would give him. he would lay on her feet and attend to her needs if she would agree to have him back. His Akwa, Asa, the pride of his youth and his wealth. But he wouldn’t tell them that.

“She is my wife! And Olaedo is my daughter, the tradition recognizes it. My kinsmen, you people shouldn’t deprive me of my rightful possession…”

“Akwaugo and Ola are not your Possession!” the man blurted “They were never your…you never wanted them” he gritted

“My People, I will not allow my daughter, my blood to be raised by this man who called her a bastard and sent her mother out of his house in disgrace, Olaedo has a father and I am his father. She may not have the right to choose now but I know I have been a better father to that little girl In five months, more than what this man has been to her even from the womb. And Akwaugo can testify to that, I only came to fulfil tradition, you all should judge us…let these noble men seated here be fair in their judgement. I love this woman with everything in me and is ready to do anything to have her. he had her for many years yet had suppressed her…”

“What concerns you with how I treat my wife? You were only a donor! Onye nyetu, we only used you to get a child for ourselves. A man who is invited to eat shouldn’t take the pot of soup to his house!”

“Well, you didn’t only invite me to eat, you gave room for the pot to reconsider ever being in your house! You should be ashamed, which sane man gives his wife to another man to copulate!”

“A man without a penis.” Okorie guffawed and Mezie shot him an evil eye.

Both men glared at each other, chest rose and fall heavily.

“Men…men…please let us calm down. There is nothing serious in this matter. Mezie, I think you can not force a woman to remain married to you when she has already made up her mind to be with someone else”

“How do you know that?” he turned towards the chairman “Did Akwaugo tell you she no longer wants this marriage?”

Even as the words left his lips, he knew he was deceiving himself. It was crystal clear to him that the marriage was over the day Akwaugo told his secret to the kinsmen and had revealed this man as the father of her child- their child. She never came back to the house, at first he had thought it was because she was scared, but as he heard of her disappearance and appearing in Lagos, he knew she has made done of her promise. She was never coming back. But he would not give her up without a fight, he wasn’t a coward as they thought.

“We can settle this as matured man…” the man was saying “I know it hurts but think about it, what sort of marriage do you think you will still have with her? as far as I know, Akwaugo would rather disappear that return to your house, and I will not allow my child to be raised by a man who hates her so much, I can give you anything…”

He knew it would eventually come to this, he would want to flex his muscles with money, how dare he offer him money, him Mezie! The difficult meat that fills the mouth, when he made his first million, this little boy was still washing pants for a white woman! Now he felt he could buy him with money. Chai!

He approached the man with a long gait, jabbing his finger on his chest “I don’t know who you think you are or how much you have, but I will never release Akwaugo to you, and so you know- as long as you didn’t pay her bride price before she got pregnant, that child also belongs to me. You can influence these shallow men with your money, but you will not get what you came for, over my dead body. Akwaugo and her daughter belongs to me now, tomorrow and till she dies”

He stormed out of the hall.

*

Morgan knew it wasn’t going to be easy, but he was baffled at why the man would want to keep a woman he didn’t want! Out of bitterness? He stroked his nape while frowning. The day did start so well. The gods had smiled on them, they’d visit the dreaded shrine to clear Akwa’s fears, not that it did matter to him.

“The deity has not cursed you; they are not punishing you for anything”

He wasn’t a believer of gods and deities but on the two occasions when he was propelled to pay a desperate visit, they had favoured him.

“You are a good man” the priest had said, “And far be it from the gods to torture a pure soul like yours”

Today did confirm what he already knew- she was a star, a bundle of good fortune. Why it didn’t work for her former husband remained a mystery, and why the deity decided to withdraw from melting punishment on Akwaugo for breaking an oath of secrecy beats their imaginations.

The gods know best, the old one did say.

His driver pulled the car to the garage and waited for him to get down.

“Don’t worry Uche, I want to be here for a while.” He could see his woman from there, on her knees- hunched over the baby and talking as if the little girl understood her perfectly. He knew nothing would ever make him let her off his grip. His heart was hers to hold and hers for him.

He never felt for any woman, what he felt for her and each passing day, the feeling grew, amazing, overwhelming. His gaze lingered, smiling with her when she’d smile. this was the family he had longed for, when his daughter Ariel would join them, they would be a perfect family, with a queen as a mother- his queen.

He finally stepped down and approached. The baby saw him first and stretched her little arms, she turned, lifting the baby, she walked to meet him.

“How long have you been standing there?”

He caught her hands midair and kissed her palm passionately, before allowing her to touch his face. “Enough time to watch you and this little princess,” he stroked her chin and took the baby from her “Enough to appreciate the gift God brought to me. You are everything I have ever wanted”

“So how did it go? Did he…”

“You don’t expect him to just hand you over, do you?” he saw her face crease and pulled her to his chest “Common Beautiful one, it's not going to be easy but…we are not leaving here without me making you mine”

“I don’t think Mezie will bend”

He ran his thumb on her lips, “Look at me beautiful” she did “There are many ways to get things done, and I will get what I want before leaving this village, no matter the cost”

“Everything is not about money Morgan” she shook her head

“You will be amazed what money can do, my love” he gave her mouth a gentle squeeze and bit her pouted lips “You will be amazed”
