Audacius:

On the issue of frustration by registrars, maybe this experience might help some persons:

I once had quite a number of pending e-dividend requests and was frustrated after multiple submission of applications to my bank, and DHL of requested documents to my stockbroker.

I recall I had to go update my ID document at my bank and a customer care staff observed that the order of my name on the ID document was different from that on my BVN, hence the bank account. BVN was done at an e-branch of the same bank and the mistake was made. I had observed it on my ATM card but didn't think much of it.

Someone I consulted told me that, legally, the BVN name order and name order on my ID documents are for different persons. E.g. Adekunle Chukwuma Ciroma is different from Chukwuma Adekunle Ciroma even though it's the same person writing their name differently.

I went through an arduous journey of swearing an affidavit at the court and going to the line up at the notoriously queue-laden, few branches, you-know-which orange bank for the name to be corrected.

After that, the dividends started pouring in. It was a delight actually. You are just on your own doing your thing and a random look at your phone Afriprud has paid all dividends from a particular stock for so many years. Yes, that was when I got my pending dividend from JB's GTL Registrars.

The sad thing is no one told me NAME ORDER was the problem until that chance observation by the bank staff. I think about this possibility as one of the many problems whenever I see news items about the billions of unclaimed dividend and how government is unable to sleep well because of it. I think a feedback system is going to reduce it. Let people know why that form they submitted is not being treated. That should be easy in this digital age.

SUMMARY:
If you are having problems getting your dividends, check if the order of your name on BVN is same as on your ID document. Seems registrars' system will flag it as not to be attended to once name orders don't match.

SUMMARY OF SUMMARY Check the NAME ORDER on your BVN and your ID documents. Do they match?!

Peace!

Thanks for the expose. If they can at least give feedbacks to request problems will be half solved.

Please forgive my ignorance, would it not have served the Dr Esenowo better if he had simply changed the order of his name and reapplied rather than going through this prolong court case? Or was he just trying to prove a point?

sophy17:

Find below a court judgement in full support of your write up.

Esenowo v Ukpong [1999] 6NWLT [PT 608]* 611. CAN THE WAY ONE WRITES HIS/HER NAME TURN THAT PERSON TO SOMEONE ELSE BEFORE THE LAW?*
*In short, it may interest you to know that the way you write your name can make you someone else. Does it sounds funny?*
This was established in the celebrated case of *Esenowo v. Ukpong* The fact of the matter was Dr. E. J. Esenowo applied for reimbursement from Nigerian Medical Council but the Council because there is no E. J. Esenowo but Esenowo, J. E. in the register of the Council denied him his demands.
....
Thank you very much

Good day, my ogas.
Please what is your opinion on JB at 15.5. Is there a possibility of it going lower?
Newbie investing for dividend andtrying to decide on good entry point.
Thanks

It may go lower once that bonus issue hits the market but not materially. The current price level is good enough for long termers and swing trading folks. Personal opinion.

Some mistakes are just costly, unpardonable and with severe consequence. Simply changing the name to align with the register was not the issue but providing the documents/proof with which to support it.

Hence, in the recent times, human educational records are now collected/supported in several ways such as passport photograph, biometrics, etc and not just the name.

In the instant case, the only proof of him they have, is his name in their register as it is. Meanwhile he brought his documents showing his name written in another form different from the name in their register.

Very important to use the same name sequence in all our records, certificates, BVN,account name, driver's license, national ID card, international passport, ownership of properties like houses, shares , cars etc

If you qualified for the bonus it's suppose to be automatically credited. You can ask for your cscs statement from your broker. Don't rely on your holdings you see on your trading platform. Most trading platforms if not all captures only stocks purchased not bonuses.
