Chapter 36.

A thousand words ran through Madonna’s head as she hurried out her office through the back door, her father bellowing over the phone wasn’t one of them. Carefully tying a grandma’s scarf over her head- knotting it under her chin. She peeled off her brown contact and replaced it with a sterling grey.

She brisk- walked towards the drive, ignoring the group of men at the entrance of her office, slipped into her car and drove out with a screech.

Filthy security agents, champing around here since morning. She peered through the side mirror to know if their van was racing down behind her- sure they must have seen when she drove off or did they?

She didn’t know between them and the journalists, which would top her most loathed chart.

Untying the scarf and discarding it on the passenger’s seat beside her. She concentrated on how to approach her bellowing father for help, only him would be able to pull the strings that would get these preying foxes off her back, at least for now until she would be able to come up with a permanent solution.

“Damn” she muttered with clenched teeth. How could she not know this would happen? She was never known for overlooking details, yet it seemed she had been doing so lately. First, she had underestimated miss fine face and had thought she did back out- she even had torched down the lady's house without proper investigation, and the bitch had walked out of it unhurt- in fact, she did become a media sensation after that, she and her billionaire knight. As if that wasn’t
enough the witch had resurfaced when she thought she had packed her stuff and had crawled back to whatever cave she came from.
And now this?

Madonna slammed her palm on the center of her steering wheel and what came out was a deafening honk, she regretted not coming out with her Chevrolet that bore her father’s name as the number plate, it would have been easy to maneuver this traffic. But then, it would have also been easier for journalists to swan around her, not minding whether it was her or her father driving it as all their rides were pitch dark tinted.

She thought of her father again and what he was saying over the phone. A security guard had identified her as moving in with that girl at the party, in fact. She had personally led the girl inside and had handed a glass of wine to her.

She tightened her lips and slapped her forehead with her free hand. Why didn’t she think this through? No. she was very careful, she’d stay out of view for a better part of that party. Only her father and very few people had seen her before she went into the shadow…trailing the couple’s every move.

She should have known that for a five-star hotel to host a prominent man like Morgan, they must have planted cameras everywhere. Even in the lobby and in the toilet?

This is a messed-up situation. But not the one she couldn’t wiggle herself out of, lucky for her, the said girl has not been found so far. She hoped she wouldn’t make herself visible to be caught. Madonna didn’t trust her to remain tight lips if that happens, she would definitely sing like a bird.

Unless someone would go a step ahead…shut her up one way or another. The problem now was, how to find the lady who had insisted she didn’t know the location of the hotel she claimed to lodge in.
Who would believe that shit?

That lady was definitely up to something, but she would definitely find her before the police do.

She veered off the road, to the serene Pinnock Beach Estate where her family house stood conspicuously five housed away from the entrance. A fornicating mansion for her old man and his whores, so many of then had come and gone but one had remained with him for one year now.
*

Rule number one, don’t give out too much about yourself.
Rule number two, don’t look and act nervous.
Rule number three, keep walking and smile when smiled at.
And for Christ's sake don’t allow your eyes roam like a thief!

She knew these rules by heart. Why not? They were her own rules. Since pilfering was soon becoming a regular job, she’d come up with these, to help her in her game. Only that today, it was something different.

Ten minutes had elapsed since Nwamaka brisk-walked into the bank, yet she wasn’t close to the automated door. What was it with this city and queues?

Dressed in a plain grey trouser and flowered blouse, with the same black shoe she wore for the party, which she was regretting wearing at the moment as she felt a thousand prickles stabbing her toes. She clutched her bag, faces contoured to a sallow, she exhaled heavily.

“Ma’am, are you okay?”

She swiveled her head toward the voice. A security woman that had concern written on her face approached. The first instinct told her to turn away immediately and pretend as if she wasn’t the one being talked to. But she desperately wanted to get out of the queue, into the bank, and get this whole thing done.

“I am feeling lightheaded. I have a medical condition; I am not supposed to stand for a long time. The woman gave her a scrutinizing stare while she held her breath, waiting for what would come next.

“Okay, follow me.”

“Okay.” She leaped out of the queue and followed the woman who didn’t see her little jubilation hop. In less than eight seconds, she was inside the bank hall, in front of a cashier.

“I want to pay in a cheque” she rushed the words.

“Any ID?”

“Bleep!” she had none. Didn’t think it was necessary when she stole herself away from the village, never wanted to give her mother the impression that she wasn’t returning. She groped inside her bag, pretended to be looking for it. “It must be here somewhere…” she muttered.

“Madam you can move over there and continue searching,” the cashier said impatiently.

What would she do now? Go back and get an ID, where?
“See I can’t find any ID with me, but you can find out if I am actually the face with the name…check in your system, you can do that now, can’t you?”

“Ma’am I don’t have that time now, present me with a Valid ID and I will accept your cheque!”

What was wrong with this flat-faced girl? Nwamaka wanted to snap. The girl was drawing attention to them and it wasn’t good at all.

“Sister, I need this money transferred now. It’s for my medical bills…you see, I am sick. You can ask that security woman over there” she tried another strategy, but the lady remained aloof. Those behind her had started grunting their protests.

She cocked her head forward, “See, I can find something for you if you do this for me”

The girl cast a wide glace at her as if she had said the abominable. This is Nigeria and money should solve everything… “I will give you much more, look at the name on that cheque, she is the billionaire’s girlfriend! Mr. Morgan…I tell you; you will get rewarded more than you can ever imagine…”

The shocking look on the girl’s face told her she had divulged more than she should have. In a flash, she made the only reasonable move at the moment- snatched the cheque from the girl, shoved it into her bag, and made for the exit.

One problem…two uniformed men were hustling in her direction.

*
“I told you to leave those two alone!”

“But dad, I did nothing! I only helped someone out!”
It would be difficult to sell the twisted story to her father. In fact, he was giving her that ‘Tell that to the bird’ look.

“Okay, Dad…” She must come clean if she would want her old man to come through for her the way he did two years ago when a young man was found dead inside her pool.

She gave his trophy girlfriend a stern glance and the ‘Little girl’ quietly moseyed inside. Though she wouldn’t stoop low to being friendly with this girl who was almost her agemate, the girl was the only one she was able to tolerate among the many women her father had bleeped since her parent’s separation.

“I did it” she mellowed “But it wasn’t meant for him, I swear. it was a mistake…” she hurriedly added.

“Madonna, when will you learn? The problem with you is that, like your mother, you think that everyone should hurry to your side at the snap of your fingers, you want a man- and when he doesn’t want you the way you want him…you snap, you think everyone should worship you”

“Dad please…”

“No, let me finish!”

“Not now dad, I don’t need this sermon. I am in trouble!” she glared at the old man, who was seated unperturbed on his palatial sofa. “I need help dad, and I came here for you to do that…for the last time…I guess” she couldn’t hide her shame which was visible in her trembling voice.

She knew she did promise herself not to come running to daddy after the last time. But he was her only option. “Please, dad. They will send me to prison if you don’t do something…”

“What do you want me to do?”

She whipped her face up, cast an appreciative stare on the old man, she could see a glimmer of hope as she nipped to her father’s side, fell on her knees, and took his hands. “Just for you to tell the media my own story…”

Her father gave her a quizzical stare.

“I didn’t give the girl that drink” she continued, “Since they were already roping this on Morgan’s girl, we can continue the lie. She already made this drink ready and wanted me to help her serve it to her husband…”

“And you didn’t see the holes in this you idiotic story? you and this lady have never exchanged meaningful conversations not to talk of she trusting you to serve her husband a drink…secondly, you would never agree to serve anybody except there was something in there for you, everybody in this town knows how pompous you are”

What has happened to her brain? Why couldn’t she think of a wonderful plan that would get her out of this mess? She sprang to her feet, sat on the old man’s laps “Daddy help me out, please. I am running out of ideas…”

The old man pushed her off, stood up, and picked his phones. “I have no ideas to give you, except to tell the truth and face the consequences, I will no longer clean your mess if you chose to be irresponsible”
*
“Mr. Morgan…Mr Morgan, can you hear me?”

The vision wasn’t clear at first, he had to shut his eyes and slowly opened them again to see a man’s face leaning over him, dragged his gaze from the face to his white cloak, the soft hand that came up his face and tore his eyelids wider, peering into his eyeballs.

The man gave him a Cheshire cat smile. “I didn’t know how to explain to everyone that a man like you died in my hospital. That would have been the end of my career”

Morgan blinked severally and adjusted his eyes to the brilliant light in the modestly furnished room.

“He is coming around Nurse,” the man said over his shoulder to the elderly woman that had the same look of concern on her face as him.

“Oh, thank God! We would have had two deaths in our hands” the woman sighed with relief.

Two death, who and who? He closed his eyes again and tried to clear his head. Oh, God! his inside hurt terribly. Breathing seemed like he was trying to push a fine cloth over a thorny surface. With the cannular stuck at the back of his hand and the mask over his nose, he concluded this must be a hospital of some sort.

Where is Doctor Marcus? He should be the one attending to him, not some strange faces.

As if the man read his mind, “they brought you here almost immediately and doctor Marcus has been by your side. He just went home; he would be back by noon” the mask was removed.

He nodded

“Can we let those men in now?” the woman asked

“Are they still here? They will wary that young woman to death” the man said under her breath

Which men? What did they want with him? Oh, f*ck! The more he tried to recall the more his head hurts…

Again, the man saw his struggle. “Mr. Morgan, you were comatose for twelve days…passed out the night of your engagement”

The party. His engagement. Akwaugo! The fog clouding his head seemed to be clearing. Arrr… he had to remember… what happened to him”

“Where is she” he throated. The effort to speak hurt badly. He put his hand round his throat and winced.

“Take it, easy sir, your larynx and your throat were affected by the poison. You don’t want to stress it now”

He didn’t want to be patronized. What the big man wanted was a familiar face and the familiar scent of his woman. “My Wife, where is she?” he said gravely.

“She is outside with some officers; I will send for her now”

Appreciation to @Ayemileto and @Vulcanheph.
Without your critical eyes, I would have overlooked somethings, as this story is just a first draft.

And I am always writing with the very thin opportunity I have. Some details would definitely fly out of my head like it's happening Madonna now.

Thank you so much everyone for your patience and support. I love you so so much.

"One more night" is doing so great in Okadabooks and Amazon. Have you checked it out?

It's still 800 naira,

You should understand that besides being a wife and a mother, she has a life which means she has a lot of things to attend to and doing that during the day won't be possible, and i know she doesn't want to disappoint her fans. ....besides night time is the best time to do any project due to how it's calmness and serenity, ask any engineer, architect or artist and they will tell you it's true.
