Hello Nairalander,
I really need advice concerning making a choice between the two jobs before me. My family members are divided over which job I should choose.

I'm working in a highbrow secondary school and my start up salary was N75,000. After three years, my salary is now N96,000.00. I just got a lecturing job with a private university and my gross salary according to the appointment letter is N88,000.00. My father wants me to continue with my teaching in the secondary school but my mother and fiancee are pressuring me to write acceptance letter to the university and accept the offer. There's no time, both the university and the secondary school will be resuming on 12/10/2020 and I have to make a choice between now and Thursday. My fiancee is already calling herself "wife of a lecturer" and threatening that she will quit the relationship if I did not accept the university offer. My mind is in the secondary school because there is free lunch and N150,000.00 housing allowance per year, but the university doesn't give lunch and housing allowance.

Should I go and become Mr. Lecturer and sacrifice my secondary school benefits?
You make more money from lecturing apart from your salary. Go for the lecturing job. You can make as much as N500k from selling textbooks alone

Considering your career, retirement, prestige and all that, I will advice you go for lecturing job.

You will depreciate with time in secondary school, you will get to the peak of your chosen field in tertiary institution.

Eitherway you choose, your girlfriend can only advice you, she has no say on your life decision

Here is the time schedule:

Secondary school: 8:00AM - 4:00PM
University: 8:00AM - 6:00PM

I used to teach some Lebanese and Pakistanis children private lessons from 4:30 to 6:30 in which I make up to N58,000 a month. I have to sacrifice that too if I accept the university work
there's your answer right there

There's not much difference between a secondary school and a private University. You can also get laid off anytime. And it seems you enjoy working in the sec.school. You're just here for advice because of your girlfriend. You know what you really want.

Private universities in Nigeria are really paying poor salaries. Imagine a lecturer collecting N88,000.00. This is ridiculous. I saw on salaries review website that start up salary for academic staff in covenant university is N120,000.00. Too bad

First time am hearing that private secondary schools bae paying this large, i would have advice you to follow the university own, but I don't really know how capable they are....so it's better you follow your heart bro. Good luck.

If I were you, I will stick to the private school, enrol for ph.D from next year as planned(which d private uni already places a redflag on for 3years) and have my ph.D while still working in d private sec.school.
I can then decide to switch to public university later if I want.
Listen to your father and ignore what your fiancee is saying.
If it is a fed. Uni maybe, it would have been better.

From all indications, your heart is somewhere already.

If I were you, I'll stick to that secondary school job as if my life depends on it.

The increase in salary shows that you're making progress and it'll be hard for them to lay you off. Most private Universities especially those with pay range 40 to 80k are prone to owe salaries.

You get extra 150k every year from the secondary school, extra 58k every month. Why will you trade all these add-ons for 88k job that is not even secured? It would have been a different case if it had been a State of Federal University.

My take: Stay with the secondary school, start your PhD and then along the line or after your PhD, you'll pursue for a lecturing job in a well deserving University.

Good luck!

I have master degree and want to start my PhD next year. The university told me that I can't start PhD until I work for them for 3 years. That is another thing I'm considering. The secondary school will allow me to go for PhD
Madam, stay with your government job. Don't go for private. University is good but remember that it is a private entity that offers you job. After your PhD and with your experience in government job, you can easily merge your service. My candid advise though.

I would advice you go for the lecturing job

There's high chances of salary increment in universities
Also if you know your onions there's also high chances of you becoming a senior lecturer within time

Also you have more time as a lecturer to start up a business to support your self and family

You get to meet a lot of influential people since its a private university
If you behave like the "Nigerian Lecturer" You'll make it big time if you know what I mean grin

Secondary school job isn't secured at all as you can easily be replaced at any slightest issue, But its all about fulfillment. If you feel fulfilled there you can as well stay back
You are mouthed grin Selling of handout alone every semester will go a long way for him grin
Re: Secondary School Teaching Vs Lecturing: Which Of These Two Jobs Should I Choose? by Excessnation: 10:29am On Oct 07, 2020
Handouts are not sold in private universities. Sorting: yes, but it is risky cause you can be easily caught which will warrant an indefinite suspension.
iaamxavier:

Can you teach these kids forever? No!
Think about career prospects rather than the current pay!
Do you know how lecturers make their money?
From sales of hand out and textbook
Imagine you get to sell handouts at the rate of 1k to 100 students per department and you're lecturing about 5 departments (100Level)
Do the math
As a lecturer you can't possibly have class from 8-6PM
Every school session ends by 4pm
I don't want to including sorting grin because that's corruption
Anyways its still your choice to make
Just lent my advice

Go for the uni job. With ur experience and PhD which u will get while there, u can move over to federal uni. U can never be higher than d principal of d school, can be replaced anytime once u fuckup. Go for the uni job but don't end there, switch to federal school after PhD.

With this, you have to continue with the secondary school. Any job that doesn't allow knowledge advancement is not worth it. When you acquire PhD, there is tendency of getting higher offer in future.

If your aspirations is to go far in the academic line, go for the lecturing. But if you have aspirations outside of the academic line, then remain with the secondary school.

Do note:
Both jobs lack job security.
Most Private Universities does not increase your pay reasonably over time.
You will be loaded with courses beyond measure that you won't have time for that girl.
In the end, teacher and lecturer are titles.

You should only quit that secondary school job if you are able to secure a federal government job.
Your dad sure knows wassup, wise up man.
Lemme chip in this, private universities also lay off staff @ will ooo so it’s still not secured.

if it's short term goals you have stick to the secondary school but if you want to go further academically the private university offer is the best bet, money might not be enough but you got free time for multiple stream of income.
