Hello Nairalander,
I really need advice concerning making a choice between the two jobs before me. My family members are divided over which job I should choose.

I'm working in a highbrow secondary school and my start up salary was N75,000. After three years, my salary is now N96,000.00. I just got a lecturing job with a private university and my gross salary according to the appointment letter is N88,000.00. My father wants me to continue with my teaching in the secondary school but my mother and fiancee are pressuring me to write acceptance letter to the university and accept the offer. There's no time, both the university and the secondary school will be resuming on 12/10/2020 and I have to make a choice between now and Thursday. My fiancee is already calling herself "wife of a lecturer" and threatening that she will quit the relationship if I did not accept the university offer. My mind is in the secondary school because there is free lunch and N150,000.00 housing allowance per year, but the university doesn't give lunch and housing allowance.

Should I go and become Mr. Lecturer and sacrifice my secondary school benefits?

Let me put myself in your shoes.

I'd first think what adding a University lecturing job experience to my CV would do to my career prospect. I'll have more connects as a lecturer going for his PhD than a secondary school teacher going for same. I'd be thinking of what to get in the near future, not what entices me now.

Those would be some of my considerations

My good friend, I am of the opinion that you remain in the secondary school if the secondary school is owned and funded by government. Private schools in Nigeria are not worth working for. Stay where you are celebrated not where you are tolerated. Above all, pray tonight with all your heart and GOD will give you revelation that will redeem you. Decision making is easy if there are no contrary opinion. Be sure you pray fervently (with all your heart) so that you will not make mistake. I AM WHERE I AM TODAY BECAUSE OF THE DECISION I TOOK YESTERDAY!

The main redflag to me is the restriction on you going for your PhD. 3 years fa? How can they waste 3 years of your life like that? So you won't advance quickly and still be on the same salary scale for years.
Pls stay in the secondary school, start your PhD. The income is OK. Dats 95+ 58k a month minus d housing allowance of 150k a year which could still increase if you get more extra lessons. Compared to the private uni that pays 88k.

All those singing textbook textbook, hope you're all aware that he's entering as a junior lecturer and based on some uni policy, textbook are not compulsory and I think the dept also has to approve the sale of the text. Pls this bird in your hand is bigger than the one in the bush oo!!!!. Also the op is still young so at least in the private school sector, he's still viable for at least 20 more years which will enable him finish his PhD and gain experience

Your woman is naive quite alright, but go with the lecturing job.

Lecturing is easier. If you further you'd be surprised in 10 years time you might become the HOD.

From there you could become the Dean and keep growing and growing...

This reminds me of one small school where I taught, the students were not up to 500 and they proprietor had a Dean of studies. gringrin

Go for lecturing. Don't think about it twice. Go for lecturing. You will understand the positives very soon. Lastly, go for lecturing.

If I were in your shoes, this's what I will do.
"stick to my sec sch teaching job since it has some juicy packages, proceed with my PhD, after three to four years I will apply for a lecturing job with my PhD.

With a PhD, you will easily get a lecturing job in a federal uni either as assistant lecturer or lecturer II, you may not even find lecturing job in private uni appealing again because of the stress and its insecurity.

My cent.

Can you teach these kids forever? No!
Think about career prospects rather than the current pay!
Do you know how lecturers make their money?
From sales of hand out and textbook
Imagine you get to sell handouts at the rate of 1k to 100 students per department and you're lecturing about 5 departments (100Level)
Do the math
As a lecturer you can't possibly have class from 8-6PM
Every school session ends by 4pm
I don't want to including sorting grin because that's corruption
Anyways its still your choice to make
Just lent my advice

You wonder why Nigeria is rotten when people like you fill this geographical space, looking for how to cut corners and corruptly enrich themselves at the expense of true growth and development in Nigeria.

See people advising him to go for lecturing in a private uni and most of them are all about selling handout like it is legal, Nigerians and corruption. Secondary school is better the private lessons alone can cover the salary of a lecturer. You can have your own school later, You can cross to a University later if you want to but for now get your Ph.D first before crossing i bet with masters you may regret. Your girlfriend are you sure you want to end up with a lady that immediately things don't go her way she keep threatening you

Continue with the Secondary School. I would have opted for the Uni but it's a Private Institution.

Here is the time schedule:

Secondary school: 8:00AM - 4:00PM
University: 8:00AM - 6:00PM

I used to teach some Lebanese and Pakistanis children private lessons from 4:30 to 6:30 in which I make up to N58,000 a month. I have to sacrifice that too if I accept the university work [/quote]

Okay. Thanks

that is only applicable to federal institutions, some people dont know the difference between private and public universities. From your analysis, its obvious there is job satisfaction in the secondary school than the university. Also, consider the progression (PhD), the additional income, salary increment, all these i can see in the secondary school. The location also matters too. But in all, Pray and let God direct your path.

My brother, as someone that share dsame aspiration and in dsame course of proffesion with u, believe me when I say, there is nobility and pride being a teacher than a lecturer AS LONG AS UR NOT LECTURING IN EITHER A STATE OR FEDERAL setting. The only difference is the money u earn as a lecturer, the consistent growth in both position and salary, the job security, and the money u tend to make from extra platforms like handouts, sorting and d rest, and I see none of these advantages in the so called private university other than answering d name "lecturer". As far as am concern, u have a good job judging from the litle u hv said about ur secondary school which includes a higher pay than d university, constant growth in salary, house allowance, free lunch and d rest. Am also sure u have job satisfaction working in that secondary school having seen that u were able to rise from 75 - almost 100k in just 3 yrs, which certainly means that your employers recognizes and appreciates your worth, which to me is the most important thing in a job.

As for your babe, lol, except if she's just joking, my dear you can already see signs of what u intend to call a wife, someone that wi not stand by u no matter your choice in life, someone that obviously knows nothing about decision making, and someone who is more interested in pride than the relationship itself

First of all, nobody should pressure you, most especially your fiancee. My advice is that you should sit down and weigh both job, look at lecturing job advantage and disadvantage and also the secondary School job. The lecturing job can also come with some benefits later in the future. Choose wisely.

You seem to have an unflinching passion for teaching. it is good. Your future is brighter with that secondary school. You can become whatever you wish in life. Like the Sec Schl does not gag you as that private university will do. You cant teach forever. I was once a teacher. Now, my salary is over a million, though I am no longer teaching. Please, continue with your teaching job in the secondary school. Nevertheless, finish your PhD. the current, VP of Shell Group, Mr. Omotowa, was a private school teacher for years b4 he got Shell employment. Follow your father's advice. You will excel.

Stay in the private secondary school and do your PhD from there. Assuming you said federal or State uni, I would have said go for it. But to be sincere, stay in the sec schl and launch from there. I have Profs today who took that route, and later crossed from sec schl to State uni after their PhD.

I would advice you go for the lecturing job

There's high chances of salary increment in universities
Also if you know your onions there's also high chances of you becoming a senior lecturer within time

Also you have more time as a lecturer to start up a business to support your self and family

You get to meet a lot of influential people since its a private university
If you behave like the "Nigerian Lecturer" You'll make it big time if you know what I mean grin

Secondary school job isn't secured at all as you can easily be replaced at any slightest issue, But its all about fulfillment. If you feel fulfilled there you can as well stay back
Private universities has grade

As a lecturer, you can easily change to another institution,do research and get paid, get connection and diversify .

Hi,
You need to know what you want to be and where do you want to see yourself. Success at a time is not about money its about fulfillment of long hearth desires.
If your long term desires is centered around the free lunch and housing what if policy changes and there is cost cutting policy and free lunch is removed. Just think about it, the condition of service of the private university can be improved upon with time. But the primary factor should be where you want to be and fulfilling the desire to be the person you have been dreaming to be.

I think there is a prospect in the lecturing job. You can be there and still run a program over time. Also, I understand life is all about risk, accepting new challenges and ready to take responsibility. This is not a matter of ego or what have you, I would advise that you settle for the lecturing job, you won't regret your sacrifices in the nearest future.
Note: You didn't mention the name of the private university, but before you make a final decision, I would advise you to run an underground checks about the school and level of accreditation and acceptance they have garnered so far. This should be a strong prerequisite for taking your decision
