Biko any tribe that want to do apprenticeship with us should write a long application letter and submit to the nearest 2 by 2 shop closest to him.

It will be deliberated upon in the next Umunna meeting.

Don't hype the apprenticeship, many are not paid after apprenticeship.

Present youths in the big cities like lagos cant do apprenticeship, they are not patient.

Igbo apprenticeship takes like 10 years to complete, how many people in the big cities can do that when ordinary 4 years university they can't complete.

Re: Igbo Apprenticeship System Makes People Hate Igbos – Aisha Yesufu Sparks Debate by knowledgeable: 11:34am On Oct 09, 2020
cbrezy:
Nigerian activist, Aisha Yesufu has stirred up a debate on Twitter after sharing her opinion that the Igbo apprenticeship system have contributed to why many people from other tribes resent Igbos.

It is given that the age long Igbo apprenticeship system has produced a lot of multimillionaires of Igbo extraction to the wonder of many from other tribes.

The Igbo apprenticeship system allows a businessman take a young person to learn about his business and eventually get settled (given start-up capital) after an agreed period of time, which usually lasts between 5 to 7 years. During the service period, the younger person (servant) serves the businessman (master) while learning the business.

The Igbos have used the system to build themselves and relatives into renowned business men and women even where apprentices have little, or no formal education.

A Twitter user had said: “The Igbo’s apprenticeship program is the only ‘MBA’ class in the world that teaches the real intricacies of running a business, the practical application of SWOT and PESTEL analysis. And when you graduate, they’ll give you seed capital to start the business. A system that works.”
In replying the tweet, Aisha Yesufu pointed out that “The Igbo apprenticeship is an amazing system and the reason Igbos are great in business.”

However, she went on to say that “Everything has it’s advantage and disadvantage and that same system has also portrayed Igbos as clannish people who only employ their own people and never assimilate”

Her tweets opened up a debate as she went on to state that the apprenticeship system have contributed to Igbos been resented the same way Jews are resented.

She went on; “These are my opinions and thoughts over the years and I might be completely wrong but this is how I see it.

“There is a need to take a deliberate look at the Igbo apprenticeship system & begin to look at ways of inclusion. It can start with 5% inclusion of others. When you always go to your village to bring those that will work for you how do you expect the people where you are to feel?

“Just like the Jews, Igbos are resented & I have always wondered why? Is it because they are successful and can achieve anything from nothing? Is it the resilience? I concluded it is because it seems no matter how long they stay with you or you with them you are never one in biz

“A situation where as a business person you only employ your people via the apprenticeship model & no matter how long you stay in a place you never employ the indigenes there except to load and off load. there will be resentment. More if it is not one off experience but the norm

“The Jews too have that trait. Family businesses. Helping each other grow in business and capacity to gang up(if na one naira na one naira) on business issues are common traits shared by both Igbos and Jews. The others feel like outsiders not allowed to share in the goodness

“Systems are to be looked at and upgraded from time to time. It is also important to look at how things are perceived by others. You don’t have to change but just know this is how this action is seen by others

“In all the riots I witnessed as a child, I always say it is more economical than religion. Host community usually think it is the others that kept them impoverished. They feel those monies would have been theirs if these people weren’t there. People don’t blame their lazy selves.

Aisha Yesufu, how dare you delve into a subject that can be seen/analyse from a national anthropological, socio-economical-political angle?. There is a motive(a dark one as always towards the children of light).

My point, is not that the subject can't be analyse on its own merit or demerit, but at this critical/shaky time in this country, such analysis must be done from the national scope. Nigeria is at crossroads now, therefore, your analysis must cross reference other social cultural traits in the country, like the Fulani Rugga system, the Yoruba media dominance and etc & collectively analyse their merits or demerits towards establishing a progressive social cultural order in the country, and not a situation where one cultural trait is ruthlessly killing off Nigerians, while another see advantages in being biased, and you cleverly use your analysis of pros & cons of that one 'focus' cultural trait to express Your Own biases.

Nigerians Ndo..

If IGBO na product/goods e go dey move market pass anything... hehehehehe

I know one hausa guy at idumota market that served his Igbo master for 7-8yrs, his boss settled him 2yrs ago, during his settlement his boss gave him one of his shops filled with goods and gave him cash too....

we all love him coz he is humble and he always claim that he is Igbo though we all know he is not, he speaks Igbo very well...
after his settlement, his boss allowed him to stay with him for almost 1yr b4 the guy decided to move out to rent his own apartment at orile...

he is doing really well and I believe in the next 5 to 6yrs he will be a rich man just like other Igbos that has gone through the system, that's the power of Igbo Apprenticeship...

If you hate us, we return the hate.....
if you love us, we return the love..

Why has nobody complained that it's only Hausa boys that are allowed into almajiri system?

There is no effort to expand federal character to include Igbos, Efiks, Ijaws. Is that fair?

Yes she is right in that aspect but did igbos stop others from doing the same?

It’s not igbos people’s fault that they come to your land and take advantage of the opportunities available while you sit your ass down waiting for government.

Then tomorrow you tell your children that they are poor because of igbos.
Nice point, we are both saying the same thing. I am not in support of the resentment neither is she but what she is driving at is that it is the cause of resentment among common Nigerians.

I am not Igbo but I respect the business acumen and the apprenticeship which was even praise by world class business schools.

We are simply bringing the point down to the reality on ground by other ethnicity regardless of their other prejudice.

Last 50 years they were screaming Igbo domination in affairs of the country, Igbos left politics for them and minded their business now their problem is Igbo apprenticeship. A system borne out Igbo personal money and struggle. Before you know it they'd task Igbos to start carrying the whole country along for apprenticeship based on quota system.

The truth is, how many of these people complaining will allowed their children to serve under Igboman if given the opportunity? Then you will start hearing all kinds of negative theories about Igbos.. most of them have already formed an opinion against average Igboman nor matter how nice you treat them..

but isn't she right about the etnnic centric nature of their apprenticeship system

She is very wrong.

She didn't look into how people are recruited into the apprenticeship?? Y are people from other ethnics not under Igbo apprenticeship And probably didn't make much effort into understanding the Igbo people do accept other ethnic groups and the challenges faced .

First is that Igbo people do take people from other communities.....but often it is a futile effort.

People from other nations don't want to subject their children to the training due to its duration. The boys of other ethnic groups often don't accept the habits and culture the training instills.

If Igbos take a 10 year old Fulani boy to sleep in their shop and serve them as a houseboy for 7 or 8 years, and ONLY paid at the end of 8 years (based on the amount the master wants to give and not anything mandatory), Igbos will be called the worst child abusers and exploiters of Fulani labor in the world.

The ONLY reason this Aisha thinks it's easy to serve someone without pay or promise of a fixed amount of money at the end of 8 years service is that those who have chosen to humbly serve someone for 8 years without pay are fellow Igbos. Who you in any case see their success after 20 years of toil, without people like Aisha looking back to see what they suffered in the past 19 years!

Unlike Igbo business men that empower those that served them, the Fulani herders that rear cattle for rich Fulani men for 20 years aren't even rewarded with even 2 cows to start their own cattle herd. They are entrapped as slaves forever to rear cattle for rich Fulanis without any empowerment to start their own business.

These are some of the reasons Nigeria must break up because the people are so different in mindset and so suspicious of eachother.

I wanted to state how truly unpredictable the apprentice scheme was, but was glad when i read this post. As you aptly stated, no Fulani man will ever agree to serve an Igbo family for 5 to 8 years without any contract of how much they should be paid at the end of the period. Even Almajiri Fulani will not mortgage their life for 5-10 years serving someone in "trust" that they will give them some money at the end of the period.

Someone asked what Nigerians want from Igbos? Truth is that Nigerians are totally consumed by a mixed emotion of hate, envy, respect and frustration that despite all that was done by Nigeria to destroy the Igbo, they still thrived. It's like what is truly their secret, so we can destroy it once and for all??

Instead of quarelling with Igbos about their culture, Fulani people can also imbibe the Igbo apprenticeship system in their cattle business by settling those cattle rearers who work for so many years raising cattle, killing farmers on their behalf and making billions of naira for them through sale of cattle in faraway southern Nigeria. But, they won't do it because their culture isn't about helping anyone improve themselves even fellow Fulanis. They only look for how to cheat and take advantage of the weak forever.

The apprenticeship scheme by the Igbo emerged and grew organically based on culture and values! It wasn't borne out of a 'one Nigeria' federal gov't decree or law! You may just as well ask why the Fulani don't coopt and train other Nigerians in their herdsman business!

well said.

In good old days Fulanis coopted others but today people outside their tribe and religion don't trust them

Hahahaha, me too

But I also think it was the civil war, because after the war we had to start from the lowest of the lowest level, for example my grandfather was a clark in Kaduna before the war and after the war he lost his post and had to start selling palm oil in small rubber because that's what he can lay his hand on due to the plantation the family had, this is same stories everywhere, so many Igbos had to resort to one occupation that the government can't regulate after the war and that's buying and selling of used clothes, shoes etc, and today they are reaping the benefits, they are now control commerce in Nigeria, Ghana, Gambia, Gabon etc
