VULCAN: Hello Rosemary33. Listen to this guy, he said it all. the earlier part of your story was much more interesting than the later. I might be wrong but it seems like you're trying too hard to please your audience here who yearn for a glossy lifestyle for the main character that's why u abruptly abandoned the village story line to the city. There are so much inconsistency in your characters and they are becoming too many making it difficult to maintain their descriptive characteristics. Please, if you have one, stick to your original plots. I for one finds Mezie's character more intersting and realistic than that of Morgan who's becoming morelike a fantasy character. Even the main character Akwaugo has suddenly transformed from a realistic character to a fantasy filled city wife all of a sudden. Also the explicit romance and sex scene are becoming too many. 6 Likes |

Okay. I love Nairaland a lot. I learn so much from you guys. I tool a little break after I concluded editing the soldier story, and have submitted it to a professional editor and publisher. I will definitely go back to this story, right every wrong and make it relatable. I suddenly had writer's block and needed to relax a little. But I am back to it now. Chapter 42. Nwamaka liked money. Only one snag. Money didn’t seem to like her. Every time she was close to making money and earning herself a great luxurious life- something happened. She’d gotten Roy, her jackpot, she’d think she would have said bye-bye to managing life. Yet, the red, freckle skinned Caucasian had disappeared at a single threat from his supposed wife! Why was life so unfair? What wrong did she commit to the gods of Nnewi land that made them despise her this much? She was sure her father didn’t give enough sacrifice to Adu, his personal chi when she was born. One would think she was being punished for f*cking and sucking every dick owned by any man with a fat pocket, Nwamaka would not agree to that. She had not always been bad, had once tried to be good- that year she’d escaped a kidnap. For a whole year, she’d stayed away from the street, rejected offers of cash loaded pricks and had even taken a clean job for once in her life! What came out of it? She’d lost all the money she’d save to a good for nothing stoner who did promise her an American visa. What was it with her and her freaking luck? She couldn’t figure it out. “Thank you so much,” she murmured. Quickly snatched her handbag from the guard, with her eyes still on the man’s face, she groped inside the bag. Eyes widened in alarm, she buried her head in the bag and searched. Thank goodness. She let out the air clogging her throat, her money was still intact- or was it? She would count the notes when she got to a safe place. “Thank you.” She said louder, and walked out of the station, avoiding the urge to look back for fear of being told that it was all a joke and that she wasn’t free to leave. What now? She wasn’t going to call the missy who’d plunge her into the mess in the first place, that devil’s wife had given her enough trouble to last her a lifetime. She heard she had been bailed a week ago, her father came through for her. Elite privilege, Nwamaka would call it- who would keep a girl like that in custody? she was even surprised the lady stayed that long. Ptua, she spat out the sour taste of ill luck as she walked over the iron panel at the bottom of the opened small gate, smacking her lips and scrunching her face to the taste that was stuck to her mouth like a drape and made her shutter. Failure is a bad grape that nobody wants to have in his basket, little wonder Akwaugo hadn’t come to see her for a while, only sending words and food through that driver that had a face as hard as her mother’s grinding stone and arms rippling with muscles. Clutching her bag greedily between her armpit, she scuttled to the other side of the road and continued walking, cocking her head and squinting at every billboard to know where she was. The lady was right, Lagos wasn’t for her. She hated this place with every bile in her body and every marrow running through her bones. Wolves and selfish tigers, those were the names she would use to equate the human beings she had met in this city- including her darling Akwaugo and her billionaire husband to be. The ungrateful albino had decided to abandon her to her misery. For what? Just an alleged poisoning the bitch knew very well wasn’t her fault. Mtchew. Another thing Nwamaka held against her chi. She was the one who was supposed to meet the billionaire, she! Who had shown Akwaugo the way to riches, how would she have known the little naïve girl would leave her unfortunate husband to drape around this new man like cloth? Truly, the gods had been partial, and if there was a God in heaven like Reverend Father Ugwunna preached, that God too had not favored her. You should be lucky you still have two-hundred thousand to your name, her conscience chipped in. Yea… she should also be grateful for Akwaugo’s magnanimity, you would have rot here with no one to look for you. Wasn’t that what the warder said? Her money bag had decided to let go, she should show gratitude. Nwamaka stopped before an orange seller, grabbed a peeled one, bit off the head, and sucked voraciously as if her life was dependent on it- actually, it did, the war going on in her stomach was indescribable. Ptua! She spat out three seeds, she didn’t know if the witches in this city had also affected the droop which beat up her palate and squeezed her tongue. “How much?” “Three, hundred naira.” She would have thrown what was remaining of the orange to the girls’ face, or better still- wring her neck until she forgets how to pronounce the word ‘Hundred naira.’ The Orange tree in her father’s compound must be spewing sizable, tasty oranges at the moment, and there she was, buying three sick looking oranges for hundred naira. “Thief.” She brought out a crumpled note and threw it on the girl. “Ole!” the girl called back. No. She had to leave here. Port Harcourt was better than this place, even Nnewi…oh, how she missed the serenity of her hometown, but that place wasn’t an option, not until she was sure everyone had forgotten how she pooped on the church’s altar- the money she stole from Mezie. Finally given in to the wariness that tugged on her legs like a log, she waited for a taxi. “Where are you going?” She didn’t know- yet. But where she would end up, by this time tomorrow, she had figured out. She would go back to Onitsha. * Desperation did turn him into a beggar, a man without balls, a few months ago. turning his face and acting aloof to the mockery, the gossips. Everybody knew he’d collect money from that ‘money miss road,’ the proud, arrogant son of Ochudo. Okoye must have been drinking fresh palm wine every morning, pouring libation to his chi and gloating in his absence. Ndi ojoor, he scuffed. None of them knew where he traveled to. Not even his friend Thankgod knew when he left the village and where he went to. And none knew he’d return when he was sure thick silence had descended on the village like an overwhelming Oji tree on top of a thatched house, and his kinsmen had gone on a far journey to the land of the spirit in their sleep. His abandoned house stood like a weeping old hag along the lonely bush part that led to the stream. It was as if no one had even tried to walk past it since he left. Only the whistling raffia palms welcomed him with their spooky whizzy sounds, his gate was on the ground- slightly buried on the sand by the rounds of rain that had fallen while he was away. He shook his head and carefully walked into his compound being taken over by grasses, he was careful not to step on the gate, he wouldn’t want to announce his presence- they shouldn’t know he was here. The noxious smell that wafted into his nose made him choke. What died and made his house its burial ground? Or had they concluded he wasn’t returning and had turned his home into Ajofia, where they throw dead bodies? With his thick upper lip serving as a shield to his nostrils, he footed into. Why would he have to come back? He didn’t plan it. But his visit to Okija earlier that day prompted this. “Get a sand from your compound, ego ayoro ato (Three cowries) and present yourself to Okija. You will get what you want.” And that he must do. He didn’t want Akwaugo, not anymore- that man must have ravished her otu badly, jabbing his adulterous manhood into her right, front and centre. No, Okenye adighi agbupu asu racharakwa, an elder does not spit and licks up his spittle. Akwaugo was a damaged good as far as he was concerned. And besides, he had his manhood now, he could have any woman he so desired. He didn’t want the bastard daughter either, taking her away from him was good riddance- he would have strangled the little imp anyway. He wanted two things; One, Agbara Okija should shut her womb, and two, what was rightly his by tradition. This time, not alive but dead. If Edo had chosen to protect the adulterous two, denying him of justice, then even Chiokike would not deny him the life of the child. Traditionally, she was his, irrespective of her paternity. If the child dies, and Akwaugo was unable to give the man another child, the bond between the two would be severed, Akwaugo would be returned to this Nnewi like a rejected Ugu leave- Haggard and shamefaced. His feet sank in a puddle, smashing a rotten fruit that spilled its disgusting content on his sole. Hopping on one foot, his eyes roamed the compound for a stick which he would use to wipe the offending rubbish off his newly acquired brown, leather sandals. From his hang bag, a tiny bottle materialized. He squatted, cleared a potion with the stick he found, and scooped a handful of sand into the container. The hooting of an owl made him turn his head sharply, even in the darkness, he could see the bird’s glistering big eyes, his skin heated up as if the terrible bird was roasting him. What kind of sorcery is this? He thought. For a brief moment, he felt his body stiffened and his body clothed with goosebumps the size of boils. “I am the son of this land, born and raised here, I succumb to no evil,” he gritted. Another hoot. A loud shrill. And he was left alone to finish his work. He would go back to Agbara Okija that night, and would be on his way back to Onitsha once the sacrifice was completed. He didn’t give a thought to the owl that visited again. neither did he notice the dark figure that hovered over the closely knitted palm trees, regarding him while he hurried away. * Two things sent her mind in disarray- no three, actually. What was she going to say to the ten-year-old daughter of the man who she’d promise her heart? Why was she suddenly jittery at the mere mention of meeting her? And why the hell would Morgan even suggest she meet the said Oyibo girl alone at the airport? ‘She is just a child, she doesn’t bite…’ he’d strangled a chuckle, grabbed his briefcase, and walked towards his car. They were supposed to be doing this together, it was his duty to explain to the girl who she was and why she was about to get married to her father! But like always, he’d want her to face it all alone. “You have proven to me that you are capable of handling anything, Akwa m. besides, she has seen you and the baby before…I showed her your pictures and she is already stricken by you!” Story for the gods, she hissed. Okay… breathe… she willed herself, her chest rose and fell, eyes closed as she tried to gain a little confidence. She is just a child, what could go wrong? Everything. Her eyes caught a teenage girl with a flaming mass of hair, lugging a yellow suitcase and was trotting towards her. Akwaugo hurriedly searched through her phone, looking from the picture of the child Morgan did send to her to the girl she was sure was the daughter they were expecting. Her throat clogged. This was a teenager! How was it possible that she was just ten? Since she got the news that she would be the one saddled with the unsettling responsibility of picking Ariel from the airport ‘Alone,’ as Morgan needed to get out of the country that morning, she’d rehearsed what to say and how to treat the girl to gain her approval- thinking she was a child, like he said! Another look on her phone…back to the girl…she shoved the gadget into her bag, braced herself, and imported a nervous smile while walking towards the girl who had stopped a few feet away from her, faces furrowed, head darting from side to side and her boot tapping on the floor impatiently. “Hey…You are Ariel?” Of course, she was Ariel, dumb. What would have been the first thing to say to a girl who was likely to decide whether she would stay with her father or not. The suspicious squirt and the silence that followed while the girl gave hers steely scrutiny left an unmovable log in her throat. She pulled her mind away from any ugly scene the girl might want to create and concentrated on her hair which looked as hypnotizing as a tongue of fire. She’d seen it before- from the picture. “She got it from her mother,” Morgan had explained. “Yap.” The girl finally said, released her hand from the suitcase, and assumed a hip-stance posture with her head cocked sideways. “And you are my father’s girlfriend?” Ouch! Just a girlfriend? Was that what Morgan told her? “We are going to get married…” “What difference does it make? You are his girlfriend…you are going to marry him and become my mom…” The girl shrugged, “It’s fine as long as he likes you.” Phew! That was a relief, she could do a happy dance right now. “But, don’t expect me to start calling you ‘mother’ immediately, it will take some getting used to.” Oh, that’s a fine babe. As long as you wouldn’t put a strain on this blissful relationship I am having with your super-sexy dad, she thought. “So, sweetheart…” “Ariel. Let’s start off with first names for now.” “Okey…” that was a lot. A girl that had her father’s air of authority huh… “Ariel, can I help you with the luggage?” “Sure.” The girl walked ahead, the November Harmattan wind ruffling her hair. Akwaugo had the strong urge to kick her man in the balls for setting her up with this. He would have been at the airport if he had wanted to. Wasn’t he the Chief? He could do anything and nobody would blink! Rather he had deliberately wanted her to meet the girl first, a grown girl. “Daddy said I have a little sister, where is she?” the girl stopped abruptly, turned to face her, and asked. “She is at home, waiting for you as well.” For the first time since they’d met under that windy weather, the girl gave a wide grin, exposing a braced set of teeth, not that she didn’t catch a glimpse of it earlier. “I have always wanted a baby brother or a sister, I can’t wait to meet her!” The girl shrilled. As they settled inside the cozy SUV and the chauffeur veered out of the lot, Akwaugo gave the girl who was busy howling and shrilling with her friends on her tab, a glance. She was a child, after all, she thought with satisfaction. 23 Likes 1 Share |
