In Lagos open gutters were the norm in the past, now most drainages being built aren't open, besides even with the drainages covered people eventually open them up by destroying them, also open gutters can be a design feature due to the way houses and the general environment is built, everything should not be judged based on white man standards, even if our standards are inferior they are ours, that's the greatest mistake of black men, they always want to accept all standards but theirs,I tell you if Europeans start building open gutters for any damn reason it will become the new standard for most black men like you,u will start complaining on why we have covered drainages, ours is ours that's all that matters

I agree, we shouldn't copy their nonesense culture but we can copy some of their developmental models, doesn't even have to be exact.

Simple things like planting trees etc.

Lagos is overly focused on and that shouldn't be the case.

Lagos use to be like this in the 60s. It can look like that nothing special.

Which Lagos? Where i was born and lived in or where? It was not even 20% of this. Things were just more orderly and there were less people. At least I knew what the 1970s looked like.

Fact is we have a long way to go, All Nigerian cities have poor urban planning.
our cities lack organization, why can't our roads be marked, with installed functioning traffic lights, covered drainage? and most Nigerians are so dumb on how to dispose dirt properly, both the government , citizens and contractors have failed. it's not about Apc/pdp it's just doing the right thing. in this part of the world, we have got it all wrong...

We don't have these kind of streets in nigeria because we are not ready to pay the kind of taxes that would fund and maintain those kind of streets.

In the UK, if you are living in the city, you pay council tax which ranges from 60000 to 100000 naira monthly depending on the city. That money goes into making the cities look nice

That's why uk cities have great streets.

If we charged that kind of tax in Nigeria, Nigerians would scream.

So we pay scanty taxes and get scanty and bad roads

The bad roads we have in Nigeria are what we can afford. The sad thing is that looting still happens on top

Is it not from what you earn that you pay taxes ?

If you expect me to pay N100,000 in monthly taxes, ask yourself what is my monthly income ?

Is it in Nigeria where business people hardly average N100,000 a month that you are expecting someone to pay taxes ?

Useless arguments.

Even if I earn N500,000 in an oil job, does Nigeria deserve N100k/month of my taxes, when I'm just one person in a percentage of one to 100,000 poor Nigerians ?

I better spend my money on relatives than on political thieves who cannot manage resources effectively.

That countries are rich does not mean they have excess resources, they only manage what they have very efficiently.

The richest people I know are the most miserly, Nigerian politicians are very wicked. Visit Imo state, they are either building statues with public funds or demolishing govt buildings and structures.

Are they they the people we should pay taxes to, when I know how hard I discipline myself in managing my resources ?

Actually we dont pay as much tax as does the uk.

The UK has a tax to gdp ratio of 33% . Nigeria is 5.8% and our gdp is less than that of the UK.

As an example, do you pay a council tax of 70000 naira where you live? Monthly? Uk citizens pay the equivalent in pounds some even pay more depending on the city.

How many Nigerians earn 70 thousand naira per month that u expect them to pay council tax of 150 pounds.
Besides a lot of countries with low wages have beautiful urban landscape.
It has nothing to do with tax, it's the mindset of our leaders and possibly the followers.

who said we don't pay tax in Nigeria, before ur salary with get paid they've already removed the tax then a businessman in his shop pays his tax at wen due. they should start working with those ones paid before asking for more even wen thousands jobs have been lost

Lists of the reasons

Local government chairmen,

Governors,

House rep in each constituency

Senate reps in each constituency

House members in state house of assemblies

Analyses this lists then you will understand why streets are too bad

So when you get into politics would you be willing to charge heavy taxes to pay for the good roads you want?

Our budget for thos year is 26 billion dollars. South africa spent 23 billion dollars on education alone last year.

London's budget is 2 billion dollars this year.Lagos budget is 3 milllion dollars. ( for the state not the town) ( figures not correct. Error regretted )

Our oil revenue is not enough to feed everyone for a month self.

How do you raise the money.?

What money is Governor Umahi using to change the face of Ebonyi state ?

Just as people have a degree in management, likewise do CEOs get experience in managing companies and individuals.

The people in government are doing the wrong thing.

People with zero experience of economic development want to lead at all cost.

Steps for Nigerian government to achieve this

Stop corruption
Create more jobs
Build refineries
Increase minimum wages
Then let you citizen pay tax

Those taxes will be converted to something meaningful and visible

People's orientation needs to change positively.
For example, if they say keep cities clean by not disposing rubbish on the streets, People haven't stopped till now, they make it worse by dumping it in drainages causing floods during rainy season later complaining and blaming government for not doing well.
If people in Dubai do this, do you think it would be one of the most beautiful places in the world

Nigeria leaders both past and present should be killed by hanging, Those that are dead should be brought out and re-kill properly

So Nigerian leaders should be killed by hanging?? What should happen to the Nigerian followers that enable those bad leaders? I hope you realize that the leaders come from the people. People get the leadership they deserve (not the ones they want).

We don't have good policies on housing and roads and the general environment. You make good policies, you enforce them and you get stuff like this. One more thing, in Nigeria, individuals biuld mainly. As in individuals buy plots of land then build based on different plans. This makes neighbourhoods look haphazardly disorganized..Elsewhere, it's huge companies like Julius Berger and co with all the man power and resources to build beutiful stuffs based on city planning codes.

I don't know about other African countries or black people, but I can say why in case of Nigeria. When you're forcefully joined to a group of people who detest developments and always want to hold on to their archaic and crude ways of doing things, you can never have streets like these ones in Nigeria.

Imagine if the old western region (of Nigeria) was an independent country with Awolowo as its first President or Prime Minister, we would have been envy of most of these European countries. After all, we had Television station, first in Africa, ahead of some of these western countries e.g Spain.

Trust me,with true federalism in which each state is allowed to develop at its own pace, owns and controls its resources, I can tell you that hundred of streets like those above will spring up from southern Nigeria.

The present "almajiri" system,as being practised, abhors anything called development !

Imagine someone like Tinubu became the leader, can you still have such developments when 30-40% of the budget goes towards his pockets? Same goes for our Eastern regions, we all would like to point fingers and blame the other tribe but the truth is that our regional leaders are just as wicked as the national ones. If a Yoruba person could not do it for 8 years, Northerners could not do it for forever and a South-South person could not do it for 5 years, what makes you think any NIGERIAN can solve these problems? It's not a tribe thing, it's a mentality/cultural problem, I said it once and I'll say it again, show me a true patriot in Nigeria and I'll show you a man that has yet to taste power and wealth!

I have no idea about vehicle taxation in Nigeria. Most developed countries charge around 110k naira annually just for car road tax and emissions, and that money is used for road repairs. If all licensed cars on the Nigerian roads pay 10k naira annually with over 12 million cars is about 120b naira.

Why don't we have beautiful streets that look like the ones posted above? Answer:
Several reasons probably- ; would citizens stop throwing garbage, empty water/drink plastic bottles, pure water nylons, house -hold garbage, faeces wrapped in black nylon bags(esp Lagos), on the streets? Would street traders stop selling on the streets- both static and itinerant hawkers. Would dirt evacuated from drains not be poured onto the road instead of taken to dump sites? Would landlords and tenants cease to cut roads to pass water or electric cable wires after road construction and commissioning?
Would tippers not convey sand dripping with water uncovered on roads unchecked as seen on our roads?
Would the depraved people in power not inflate x10 the cost of road construction and hence do inferior work with their contractors. Would politicians award road jobs to seasoned contractors instead of their cronies who would use wheel barrow, shovel etc as we saw in one State in the South East.
Would the public servants charged with supervision of the jobs, do it without collecting kick backs to allow infractions?
Where do we start? There are many reasons why our roads cannot be like that.
