I am not surprised at all. Gowon's regime was the most corrupt in Nigeria's history. IBB's regime is second

WHAT ABOUT THE TRILLIONS THE BRITISH STOLE FROM 1897 TO 1960?

WHY WAS NIGERIA STILL AN ''UNDERDEVELOPED COUNTRY'' WITH NO POWER STATIONS, UNIVERSITIES, OR EXPRESSWAYS, AND AN ILLITERACY RATE OF 95% IN 1960 AT INDEPENDENCE, AFTER 70 YEARS OF UNINTERRUPTED BRITISH RULE?

WHAT DID THE BRITISH DO WITH THE TRILLIONS THEY MADE FROM EXPORTING OUR NATURAL RESOURCES?

WHO ARE THEY TO TALK ABOUT NIGERIAN CORRUPTION WHEN THEY ARE THE ORIGINAL THIEVES AND LOOTERS WHO HAVE STILL NOT RETURNED A PENNY THEY STOLE?

Oga this is our problem. The British never stole from us, they only signed treaties with our myopic rulers at that time who didn't know the value of what they had.
Mind you if they had fully discovered and explored oil before independence, they wouldn't have let us go. Since then, what have we done with our oil?

I am not defending any politician. They are the cause of Nigeria's problem. But however, I am of the opinion that every allegation should be backed up with proof/facts.

The succession of military government was characterized by looting and embezzlement. The nation was ran to the ground, and each successive government contribute their share towards plundering the economy. But when we thought we've seen the worst under military government, the civilian came and take the barbarism to higher level. Whatever corruption witnessed under gowon could not match what played out during Shagari civilian regime. The minister of finance, Umaru Dikko stole an amount so huge that when Buhari attempted to extradite him form trial by injecting him with sleep dose and wrapped him in a parcel, in a fair mission

Bro your head get oil. No sane parliamentarian would lay an allegation against the former president or head of state of a country if it wasn't true.

Quite a lot. With potential for more

Plus at the time the UK also bought our agricultural and solid minerals more. Oil was just a top up. Even if we did not have oil the Brits would have still found it hard to let go

Gowon was removed from power in a coup while he was in Uganda. What time did he have to loot half of the central bank and come to London after his coup? Why didnt the government of Muritala request the funds transferred to London. There is no way that money that huge will leave the shores of Nigeria and not be noticed by the succeeding government. Also, he came back to Nigeria and nothing was done about it.
I am not defending nobody. This UK parliament man was probably a child when this thing happened. We need strong proof to verify this actually happened. Verbal assertions is not enough. We were sure of what Obasanjo did. We had proof of what Abacha did. So let the proofs come out.
you don't know what you are saying.... How did IBB moved Nigeria's money? How did Abacha moved Nigeria's money? Even part of the Abacha money that was recovered was also reloooted by Buhari and his cronies

Those national hoodlums

How could he have taken CBN funds to London when he was deposed in a surprise coup by MM while in East Africa gor an OAU meeting?

Nigerians can't think. What a pity.

I they shame for you I swear. Let's say the same of Abacha.... How could Abacha have stolen, taken Nigeria's money to Swiss when he died on the 8th of June abi July sef of 1998? But also have it in mind that he ruled for 5 years, from 1993 to 1998.

I personally think that Jack Gowon did steal while in office. He certainly did excuse the looting under his watch by some of the folks in his circle and so on

But i strongly doubt he 'stole half the cental bank'. That in itself would have precipitated a serious financial crisis for Nigeria and the fact is the 1970s were a time of general economic prosperity even growth.

The issues though behind this allegations are two in number. First, bitterness towards Gowon because of the 1966 to 70 period and the general idea of Nigeria as having a national cake to share.

The MP is the whitest Igbo man I have ever seen

Gowon was Head of State from 1966-1975(9 years). Do you think he would he have waited until he was toppled in a coup before he started looting.

IBB was President from 1985-1993 and he reportedly stole over $10 billion dollars. And Abacha didn't request for it because he had plans to loot his own billions.

Absulami Abubakar was Head of State for 9 months and emptied the Central Bank of billions of dollars and OBJ didn't request any back because he planned to loot his own billions.

Why did Ghaddafi wait till there were rebels before offering democracy?

Indeed if Ghaddafi had started some form of democratic transition things could have changed peacefully. He might have even gotten concessions for himself like Pinochet in Chile.

Ghaddafi was the cause of his own problems. Same as Mobutu.

Gaddafi is dead. He has nothing to win or lose anymore. He is history and the people have moved on. Libyans are the ones suffering, being killed being ruled by warlords. Now I want to ask you if Mandela chose on the bloody revolution against white south Africa, would SA be any better today?

Don't believe everything you read my brother, 3 million never died in the civil war. War that was fought with mere arrow and stick. Even Syria civil war where chemical weapons was used and has lasted for more than 9 years is yet to record 1.5 million death.
Most of the 3 million dead were civilians and came from starvation not actual direct casualties of the war.

Gowon-Took 50% of the Central Bank
IBB- Took 60% of the Central Bank
Abacha- Took 70% of the Central Bank
Abdusalami: Took 90% of the Central Bank and left OBJ with nothing in the coffers.
Buhari- I wonder how much Buhari has taken
Why is Jonathan and Obasajo not in the list. They didn't steal?

Yes but if he had democratised earlier the condtions that caused the revolution to develop might not have happened

One problem i have with many african leaders is that they oftentimes fail to anticipate problems. Like if Buhari had sorted out the Sars thing from the word go in 2015 for example, would there have been the endsars protests? Maybe the dead at lekki would have been alive.

And yes, Mandela did the right thing.

Yeah. My dad told me this story many years back, I would say very reluctantly. Was common knowledge amongst those of them working in the UK during the civil war. Many, many things happened that Nigerians are unaware about before, during and after the war about people some of whom are considered national heroes today.

Today I know more about the First and Second World wars, the Korean War and the Vietnam war than the Civil War in my country. We are a nation of deep historical deficit. We know very little about this country called Nigeria, her history and her people. Little wonder we keep stumbling. There is nothing to learn from.

Are you aware Gowon struggled to fund his university education while in the UK? A reporter snapped him queuing for food at the university cafeteria and the picture trended all over the world. Murtala Mohammed was so embarrassed that he quickly dispatched TY Danjuma to London to beg him to return to Nigeria. Gowon refused to return and the decided to be paying t him pension and stipend so that he can fund his education properly.

When Obasanjo the payment of his pension and stipend as a result of the Dimka coup, Nigerians in the UK contributed money for him to finish his program.

So, how is it possible for Gowon to move half of CBN money to UK and still be struggling to fund his university education?

STORY
He is a COUPIST just like the rest you mentioned, these generals should be stripped off their stolen benefits

Gowon was in Kampala attending OAU meeting when the coup took place. He was never allowed back into Nigeria after the coup.

Nobody is arguing that he did not steal money. All our leaders did. However, the allegation that he moved half of CBN money to the UK is a big lie. He moved to the UK a poor man. The evidence available doesn’t show someone that lived like he had half of CBN money at his disposal. That a young UK parliamentarian said something doesn’t make it accurate. The least we can do is to fact check and try to place the pieces together. In this case, it doesn’t add up at all.

Hopefully, NAPTU2 would come out and educate some of you guys. He’s an authority when it comes to the history of military rule in Nigeria.

History they don't teach?
