She should cut down on carb intake, especially simple carbohydrates.
She should reduce her intake of processed foods to the barest minimum. Snacks included.
She should cut down on her portions of food.
She should avoid eating late (can never be overemphasized)
She should eat more whole foods.
Fruits and vegetables should be essential part of her diet.
Water! Water! Water! Increasing her water intake decreases her cravings for food.

Using drugs is not a healthy way to lose weight. Especially for a nursing mother.
It could have some side effects.
Change of eating style is the best way to go. It might take time to get used to the new eating style, but it works and lasts.
It slowly helps you understand your body's unique metabolism process, and what is good for it.

hahaha.. I work at a restaurant, when we serve buffet for whites they always waste food.. But blacks, they will chop their share and even ask you for take away pack to package left overs.

I hope soft drinks are not contributing to her tummy size. She takes soft drinks anytime she eats and won't eat if those drinks are not available.

Omg! Excess sugar alert!
One of the major culprits of weight gain and diabetes spotted.
That is a very bad eating habit which is hard to stop.

If she can cut that out and replace it with freshly
extracted juice (oranges, watermelon, pineapple...) Her health (and weight) will be better for it. Or she could just eat fruits whole to make things easier. (My style)
