Working for a lady boss has its thrills and frills. For Ben, it went from the tough side to the sweetest he could ever imagine. It was a dream come true for him when his boss became the very woman he shared passionate moments with.
But then, sometimes, things do not really look as they appear.







I had prepared well for the interview. It was a corporate job, although what I applied for was as a driver. Yes, a mere driver, but it was a job I really needed. The unemployment situation had forced me to apply for the job. I had registered at an employment agency and had been highly recommended for the position I applied for.

I sat and waited to be called. I thought I would see some other applicants who had come for the interview, but saw none. I waited for almost thirty minutes before the secretary, a slim lady in glasses, informed me that the Human Resources Manager was ready to see me. I was directed to her office.

‘Good morning, Madam,’ I curtsied.

A woman in skirt suit probably in her late forties looked up at me briefly. She was on phone but gestured that I should sit down on one of the seats facing her. A couple of minutes later, she finished the phone conversation.

‘Good morning,’ she replied. ‘You’re Ben Bada, the driver applicant from Aries Agency?’

‘Yes, Madam.’

She nodded. ‘I was told you could drive very well.’

‘Yes, ma’am. I try my best.’

She nodded again. ‘Aries Employment Agency is a reliable partner that we use. Having somebody recommended by them means that person
must be good. We believe in their judgment.’

I nodded but kept quiet. She had my resume in her hands and she looked at it. ‘You currently have no job, right?’

‘That’s right, Madam.’

‘If we decide to offer you this job, when are you ready to start?’

I appeared to think briefly. It was just an act. The fact was I was ready to start the job right now. ‘I can start the very moment the company wants
me to start.’

‘Actually, you need to start as soon as possible. Can you start tomorrow?’

Without any hesitation, I nodded. ‘Yes, I can.’

You’re going to be working as the driver to the Chief Executive Officer.’

I nodded. ‘That will be no problem.’

I thought of a humorous comment of saying that I could drive anybody. I however kept the humor to myself.

She put my resume in a file, closed the file and stood up. ‘Alright, let me take you to the CEO’s office.’

I stood up too and followed her out of the cool office. From a corridor, we moved to the end of the passageway. She opened the last door by the left. A lady was by the desk, typing on a desktop.

‘Good morning, Amarachi,’ the HR Manager greeted.

The lady behind the computer screen smiled. ‘Good morning, ma’am.’

‘Is Madam in the office?’

The lady she had called Amarachi nodded. ‘Yes, she is.’

Again, the HR Manager motioned that I should sit down. She opened the door that led to the CEO’s office. After about a minute, she came out
and beckoned at me. I stood up and entered the office. The office was a large, exquisitely furnished one. Behind the large desk was a woman
who should be in her late forties or early fifties. So, this was the CEO.

‘Good morning, Madam,’ I greeted.

‘Good morning.’ She looked at me all over the way you would check if a particular item was suitable for you or not.

After about a minute, she came out and beckoned at me. I stood up and entered the office. The office was a large, exquisitely furnished one.
Behind the large desk was a woman who should be in her late forties or early fifties. So, this was the CEO.

‘Good morning, Madam,’ I greeted.

‘Good morning.’ She looked at me all over the way you would check if a particular item was suitable for you or not.

‘Can you really drive very well or not?’ she blurted out.

‘I can drive very well, Madam.’

She looked at me all over again and nodded. ‘Are you aware that if you do not measure up, you will be fired immediately?’

From her tone, I could see that she was arrogant and imperious. ‘I understand, Madam.’

She seemed to study me all over. ‘Alright. What’s your name again?’

‘Benjamin Bada.’

‘Okay, Ben. You will follow the Human Resources Manager back to her office where she will issue you letter of employment and ID card. She will also give you the uniform you will be using. Your work starts here tomorrow morning by eight o’clock.’

‘Thank you, Madam.’

I followed the HRM back to her office and sat in the ante-office to her own. After several minutes, the letter of employment was issued.

‘You will get the uniform and the ID card tomorrow morning when you report to work,’ she said.

‘Okay, Madam. Thank you a lot.’

I collected the letter from her and quickly read it.

‘You will also have to bring your letter of acceptance tomorrow.’

‘Yes, Madam. Thank you, ma’am.’

I left the place a happy man. The offers were quite good, besides some perks which were stated that I would enjoy. Everything turned out to be
easy. On my way home, I thought of probably buying new shirts and trousers for my new job but decided against it. Since I would be wearing uniform, there was no need I rushed to buy new clothes.

From Obalende, I took BRT bus to Ikorodu. The traffic was hectic, as usual. After a long time, I finally got down at Irawo bus stop, Owode Ajegunle. I lived off Owulade street. My single room was small but neat and decent. At twenty-seven, it was not too bad to live in such a place, I decided. By the time I earned better income and settled down to a marriage life, I had no doubt that I would live in a bigger and better place.
