BobFischer: It's like saying, I have built a house but need a foundation for it. Your have to differentiate what is real and what is abstract. In the real sense, you can't have a house without a foundation but in abstract you can. In real maths, 1 real orange cannot be multiplied by zero because the multiplier if zero does not exist. The multiplier could be people, baskets etc these multiplier has to exist so cannot be zero. Another way to explain it is, 1 orange x 0 people means the event never happened or will never happen. This means the event is just abstract. Zero is abstract and means nothing in real life. In fact, there is no zero in real life it is totally abstract. You can press a horn 1 beep or 2 beep but 0 beep means you never pressed the horn. Zero is just a concept. |

mu2sa2: The three apples are not a result of a product. Think of Product. What will you produce. If there are three people and you want to share 10 apples to each of them. At this case, there is no owning. That is where you people are missing it. How many apples will you bring? 3 X 10 = 30. If there are three people and there are no apples to share to them, how many apples will you bring? Zero. 3 X 0 = 0. Use if there are, instead of if you have. Multiplication is about forecasting. Not having. |

mu2sa2: Apologies again! But you sound biased, I don't know why. When it's other numbers, it's logical... when it's 0, it's illogical? How so? Also, I feel you're too engrossed with yourself. When they say you should multiply your 7naira by any amount, the outcome is an objective, worldwide truth, not about "you" anymore. Ofcourse your 7naira is still with you (no one is gonna take that), but the product/outcome when multiplied by 0 = 0. Take for instance, you use it for an investment. In one company, you invest 7naira and they promise you an ROI of x2, while in another coy, they promise you nothing, like you will get nothing at the end of the day i.e. ROI of 0. At the end of the investments tenures, you will get 7 x 2 = 14naira from one end, but from the other end, you will get 7 x 0 = 0 Remember they promised you b4. Stop thinking that the whole scenarios's about you alone. Widen your imagination! |

The man does not have what it takes to achieve what he had. Just sentiments like a lot of his appointments he dashed out. 1 Like |

The OP has posted a thought provoking topic. however, the concept of 0 in mathematics is not as easy, otherwise, 0 after other nos would be meaningless e.g 10000000 or 10 or5000. mathematiclaly, there will be a proof for 0. I really have learnt alot from you guys. |

Multiplication doesn't deal with what you have already, but the PRODUCT of what you have... Just like in chemistry, we have reactants and products... Take your eyes off what you have, and consider the end result... I have 0 oranges, and I wish I could take three oranges at a time... My stomach would still be empty. That's the product I have 3 oranges and I didn't take any of it... My stomach would still be empty... That's the product! The product/end result of your values decides everything. Ps: If you cook two cups of rice, the measure of the rice in that pot won't be two cups oo, haven't you wondered what brought about the increase? 3 Likes 1 Share |

He was pushed to major General, governor of northeastern state, petroleum minister, head of state and president. In multiplication, this is what you are doing: 100 x 0 = Add 100 in zero places ( don't use 100 in the multiplication operation). Nothing + Nothing. Ans: 0 100 x 1 = Add 100 in one place. Ans: 100 100 x 2 = Add 100 in two places. Ans: 200 100 x 3 = Add 100 in 3 places. Ans: 300 And so on.... Another way of looking at it is. Is to add whatever is in the bracket 100 x 0: Add (). Ans = 0 100 x 1: Add (100). Ans = 100 100 x 2: Add (100, 100). Ans = 200 100 x 3: Add (100, 100, 100). Ans = 300 100 x 4: Add (100, 100, 100, 100). Ans = 400 Etc I hope this helps the understanding BobFischer: |

TheGoodJoe: If you are not considering the 15 and the 2 you would NEVER HAVE 30. You would simply be presenting 30 "Boom!" out of the sky, just like that. Then reasonable person shall say "ok, what happened to the 30? And what shall do you want us to do with the 30? But this is not so when we see the 15 and the 2. Surely we shall see the connection that 2 in 15 places is 30 And 15 in 2 places is Also 30! |

Re: Why Is Any Number Multiplied By Zero Equals To Zero? by adanny01(m): 3:05pm On Jan 14, 2021 |
smartty68: That will be wrong. The right answer is still a flat zero. Imagine it this way, zero is a virus or magic that causes real things to disappear. In real life, imagine the situation where you will need to multiply, 10oranges by zero. That real situation doesn't exist because zero doesn't exist in the real. You have 10 oranges, 10 oranges x ? = nothing You will find out that there is nothing that can be multiplied to 10oranges for them to become nothing. i.e 10 oranges x nothing = nothing But 10 oranges x something = something You |
Re: Why Is Any Number Multiplied By Zero Equals To Zero? by teepain: 3:05pm On Jan 14, 2021 |
Basically, multiplication means to add a number of times. For instance, 3x7 means 3 times 7. The 3 times 7 actually means 3 times (we add) 7. Hence, 7x3 = 7 + 7 + 7 = 21. In the same vein, 5 x 0, means 5 times we add 0 or add 0 in 5 places. Hence, 5 x 0 = 0 + 0 + 0 + 0 + 0 = 0 Because of the commutative law of multiplication, which states that the order in which a set of numbers are multiplied does not affect their product, 5 x 0 = 0 x 5 Therefore, regardless of the order you will have zero as your answer if you multiplied any number by zero.
