I think you are right, all these new theories about "Bini" origin", "Ijaw Origin", even the Yorubas are fighting the Binis over claims over land in Yoruba lands. I believe all these moves are linked to having numbers and political advantage. The fight is to have franchise groups in order to gain numbers. All these numbers are easy to gain from large groups situated at the fringes of these big ethnic groups. Today, the fight from these other minorities are not with guns, spears and arrows but rather by propaganda. They are conquering these small towns and villages little by little. They are making large empires for themselves. So Today, Ijaws and Bini no longer need to lay siege on Rivers and Delta to conquer the people, they will do it via propaganda and false history. That is what is happening.

Another strategy is to weaken the bigger ethnic groups in the South by dividing them further into smaller groups.
At this point, even the Kings are in on these agendas. Look at the Ndoki King speaking, he was not interested in Identity really, He was more interested in having "A homogenous state".

It is a win-win for them, if those attempts fail, they can still go under any of the umbrellas of whichever political platform fits them to push their political moves. If a son of an Ndoki man named, Nwachukwu Obi commits a crime, the Ijaws will never claim him, they will be the first to tell you he is Igbo.

Ijaw was last ethnic group to come to the southern Nigeria which is not far from this recent time. The land they are occupying today was a land rejected by the Igbos, Ibibios, Urhobos and itsekiris. In the 17 century there was nothing like ijaws. They came as fishermen and established their fishing camps at the coast of Rivers and married women from the host tribes, the Igbos, Ibibios, Urhobos and itsekiri.

Initially they were building their houses on top of water which made their host to care less about their occupation, later they started occupying the creek which their host rejected due to its swampy nature. Gradually, they started moving hinterlands and claiming unoccupied land. Today, they are claiming some clans from their host ethnic groups that are located at the fringes of their land. Now they want to claim Ndoki tribe of the Igbos so as to gain ground since they heard that Ndoki is proven to be the earliest clan to occupy what is known today as Niger Delta.
