Decoy Secret:

Always have a Decoy Secret. A Decoy Secret is something that seems scandalous, but that in reality is of little consequence to you if it becomes public knowledge.

The purpose of a Decoy Secret is that if someone is inches away from discovering your actual (consequential) secrets, you can confess to the Decoy Secret... thereby placating their curiosity and discouraging them from investigating further.

For example (fictional), say you are laundering money for a criminal syndicate . This is your 'Actual Secret'. Your Decoy Secret could be that you are unfaithful to your wife.

If anyone close to you is suspicious that you are doing something wrong, and starts investigating you and you believe they are close to discovering the Actual Secret...deploy the Decoy Secret.

In tears, confess to your infidelity and say "I'm so sorry! I'll never do this again! Please don't tell my wife!".

Whatever the negative consequences are for being caught being unfaithful to your wife... they won't be nearly as bad as the consequences are for being caught laundering money for organized criminals.

which is to say dont cover your tracks but misguide them, people get suspicious when they find out you have a secret and it urges them to discover what it is,which could be catastrophic for you,so you misguide them to a misleading secret ,thereby setting them at ease.
