Premium Rolls S6-L16-HC 6v 445AH batteries available for sale. The batteries were imported from Canada for a project, however the power requirements for the project was oversized. We have over 50 batteries left. All were manufactured in 2017. Price is 100k per battery. Please WhatsApp or Call 08086009949 for more enquires.

Not to speak negatively about the batteries. They are a great product

but the Lithium versus lead acid debate has a nice example

These are C100 batteries so 480 AH battery should be used for 4.8 Amps ( so for a 48 V bank ) that is paltry 250 watts to achieve full capacity

at C10 rates ( 48 amps or 2500 Watts) the capacity drops by 35 % ( 319AH/486)

They are best used for low loads large runtime applications such as offgrid

Everything that has been said about proponent of Lithium all goes to reaffirm my believe about the tech and why I still maintain that for DIY and mainstream solar user Lithium is not there yet. It is still too expensive, complicated and potentially dangerous. Yes advance in portable and mobile tech would not have been possible without lithium which is exactly where lithium shines best. Close loop applications where it is designed as a one piece solution with charging battery monitoring all built in and the whole system is offered as a one piece machine. This is what you get with a laptop and electric car and mobile phone. The lithium battery is part of a whole. It is what tesla offers and it is why tesla power pack sells. The thing about such systems is that they are very very expensive more expensive than even buying battery packs in isolation and then assembling it into a power backup solution.. In fact in middle income countries like Australia such systems are so expensive that they are ownship cost is spread over 4 to 10 years where the owner pay small small.

Now this does not mean u can not diy lithium it just means the level of skill and time required is very high and margin of error very very thing.. One bad move and if u are lucky your bank will fail otherwise you are playing with fire.

Someone talked about finding the right BMS digging through the Chinese Market or getting an American brand then the right charger and right balancer this things are not easy and sometimes by the time u realise you have the wrong component it is already too late.. For lithium given the cost often time such mistakes can be very expensive. Same thing can not be said for lead which can be quite forgiven. You can assemble an offgrid bank easily and cheaply buying off the shelf components. Worse that can happen is your battery don't get improper charge and even this can be remedied if you notice quickly.

Lastly the notion that lithium will get cheaper as production ramps up is not backed by reality. Lithium is made from rare earth materials which are not easily available. This is why it is expensive in the first place. There are few places in the world with large deposit of lithium and as it becomes indemand the price would go down as producing becomes efficient up to a point then it will go up as demand begin to out stripe supply and we would be back to cartel system we see with oil where lithium countries try to control price to make more money.

Lithium has its applications no doubt especially with mobile tech ie laptop, phones, auto.. It is still a long way from being defacto standard for home use. And when I say long I am looking at 5 to 8 years. And the future of lithium lies in all in one closed loop systems not the voltron system we see with lead acid.

The only person who currently uses a lithium system for his offgrid on here got some of the best lithium battery cell and from a classified project.. That alone should tell you something.

The lithium raw material in a Li-ion battery is only a fraction of one cent per watt, or less than 1 percent of the battery cost. A $10,000 battery for a plug-in hybrid contains less than $100 worth of lithium. Shortages when producing millions of large batteries for vehicles and stationary applications could increase the price, but for now this is not the case.

https://batteryuniversity.com/learn/article/availability_of_lithium

The prices are bound to drop as the production ramps up and more players enter market - The cost of Lithium battery comes from clean production processes and not the raw materials
Attached is a nice video explaining the challenges .

That is the reason the semiconductor/ chip suppliers were ahead of the race ( Samsung, LG, Pansonic, Sony) but Chinese companies are catching up ( BYD... etc)

Hi gurus in the house,

Please, someone help do analysis for me on the much talked about lithium phosphate ion battery against lead acid battery (AGM).

I have plans for a 600AH lead acid battery at 24V (cost = 640k).
So, using these factors (especially cost) to get equivalent for lithium phosphate battery, analyse to help me make an informed decision.

Thanks in advance

I am also looking at building Lipo4 battery packs for inverters as they far out perform lead acid. Replacing lead acid batteries every 1 to 2 years is making inverter and solar set up as expensive as running generator, thereby discouraging many people from going solar or acquiring inverter systems.

Your analysis is very good and details but with slight corrections.
The capacity of a lead acid battery is heavily dependent on the rate of discharge. The 200ah specified by the quanta battery is at a rate of discharge of C/20. Most inverter and solar set ups discharges at far less than C/20, most times its between C/5 and C/10. Most people neglect this little detail in calculating battery capacity for lead acid. This is why most people complain they get less capacity than written on the battery pack.

Even though Lipo4 also suffer some loss of capacity with rate of discharge it is very small compared to lead acid.

Another fact with liPo4 is that charging voltage and discharge voltage has a huge impact on cycle life. Nominal voltage for LiPo4 is 3.2v, while maximum voltage is 3.6v. Charging to a maximum of 3.5v can double cycle life. Same thing too for minimum discharge, minimum voltage is 2.5v, discharging to 2.6v can also greatly increase cycle life.

One problem with lead acid which I learnt through experience is power wastage. Lead acid wastes a lot of voltage while charging. This is noticeable with a solar set up. When I measure open voltage with a 100w, 5a solar panel I read 4.2a in direct sunlight, but when I measure current going into my lead acid battery, it is usually around 3.0a. I am losing a whole 1.2a just charging the lead acid battery. When I measure current when charging lithium phosphate, I get more than 4.0a. It seems the internal resistance of lead acid is far higher than that of Lipo4.

The draw back with lithium batteries is that they are unforgiving if you don't handle them well. They are prone to explosions and fire if you overcharge, undercharge or if out of balance. That why proper charger and balancer is crucial.

if you cycle the LiFepo4 between 3.5 and 2.6 ( instead of 3.6 and 2.5) essentailly you are not using the full capacity and hence the cycle life will go up

One much less understood point about lithium batteries is after the end of cycle life the batteries can be still used for less demanding applications ( less current and less reliability) as there is still 80 % capacity left while LEad acid will have to be scrapped or recycles completely;y

You can get a luminous 1500 VA solar hybrid. With 24v battery you can even save the battery cost

If planning solar upgrade in future Ipower [zinnox] is an option if your loads are only tv and fridge plus lights you can easily use a victron 800 VA which can Handel 1600 watts short time loads and much more efficient apart from reliability
You can even optimise buy buying only 2 batteries for 24v but higher ah

mppt needs +5v headroom to work, ur system being 24v, if perhaps the batt is at 25v...ur panel outs btw 27v to 35v, so you can see that at anything below say 31v, it cant charge your batts,

you can also see that your other installation is doing better, cos you wired 2 panels in series, thus higher voltage headroom.

for the troublesome setup, either downgrade to a 12v setup or u connect have 2 panels in series.
am assuming your cable sizes and distance is within spec

Check if the controller Voc will allow three panels in series and then use only one controller

In terms of performance, several batteries are performing well and are meeting claims made by
the manufacturer. For example, the Sony & Samsung battery packs from Phase 1 exhibit low
rates of capacity fade, despite over 1,300 cycles having been completed. The capacity of the
Tesla Powerwall 1 has degraded more rapidly (potentially due to higher charge/discharge rates –
see Section 2.1), but it has also completed the most cycles of Phase 1 battery packs,
demonstrating its reliability.
Of the Phase 2 battery packs, the BYD battery pack has completed the most cycles and
demonstrates the lowest rate of capacity fade, suggesting both reliability and longevity.
Nonetheless, the trial continues to reveal performance and reliability issues with some batteries.
In most cases the issues can be attributed to inadequate product development and/or a lack of
understanding on the part of local salespeople/technicians in regard to product integration (ie.
with inverters or control systems). These are symptomatic of new technology and a new market,
and should improve over time.

House,

Good evening.
I have been thinking over 3-phase solar power system to power a mixed load of 10KW (5.5KW 3phase load and 4.5KW single phase load) between 7:30am - 6:30pm, from my findings most 3-phase setup requires a priming voltage for the unit to work, meaning I need to have another power source to get the 3-phase system working which looks like most 3-phase inverters are designed while considering develop nations with constant power supply.

Also, most solutions requires combining 3 inverter units to achieve the 3-phase power which makes the cost of procurement / installation to be on the high side to achieve. Just wondering if there could be solutions without the need of battery to considerably bring down the cost drastically.

Check Ipower or gennex which have 3 phase 10 KVA inevreters most probabaly still or import from MPPsolar

https://www.mppsolar.com/v3/mpi-hybrid-series-2/
Alternatively costsly alternative is fronius symo hybrid ( 5 KVA) - http://www.europe-solarshop.com/inverters/fronius/fronius-symo-hybrid/fronius-symo-hybrid-5-0-3-s.html

or sunny boy stoarge upto 6 KW - https://www.europe-solarstore.com/sma-sunny-boy-storage-5-0.html ( singel phase but each inverter can manage three seprate battries !!)

Is there any 3-phase Inverter system solution that does not require 3 individual Inverter units to achieve and does not need another power source to work or without the need for battery since the loading will be basically during the day.

Appreciate knowledge from the experienced elders of the forum with economical solutions that meets this mixed loads and is reliable.

My latest project .

The AC power ( Daikin inverter AC) is controlled by a SONoff TH16 ( flashed with Tasmota firmware)

The TH16 controller is controlled by the APM ( advanced power management) software based on how much load the battery is seeing. Below -10 Amp draw means either NEPA available or solar is sufficient more than - 16 amp ( 48 V battery) means other loads are high enough to switch off AC

Control by other parameters such as battery voltage, SOC, grid power, wattage also possible

THE APM software is made by the same South African guys who make ICC to interface with Aexpert /Voltronix /Ipower and BMV

the Aexpert use can use similar seup to control things like water heater or for that matter any other loads - Maxium four independent units can be controlled

The same can also can be achieved without APM using NODERED but requires deeper JSON/Python understanding

It can easily be achieved if the voltage is used as the signal instead of power. I currently have a system that uses the battery voltage as the signal to active a low/high disconnect monitoring Relay which in turn activate or de-activate contactors. These contactors control selected loads such fridge, ACs, sockets etc

Not for Solar production. SOC and voltage is not directly related to solar production in Inverter charger setup. if NEPA is available the inverter will keep the battries charged so Solar is still idling

Using SOC to optimize smaller loads like Refrigeration and pumps will not optimally work as the PV production can change every minute and may not match the load profile cycling the battery unnecessarily - ( every unit /KWH from battery will cost you 50 NGN while solar will be producing at 25 to 30 NGN so it makes sense to optimize the battery not solar

The only way to fully optimize excess solar production is to monitor incoming power and solar production and use AC coupling

in off-grid setup USE Battery, voltage /SOC to run a large load like water heater makes sense if the energy gain is significantly high

However, the easiest way to do this is if you have a charge controller with load output - e.g. epsolar/morningstar/victron - The load output can start a relay which will control opportunistic loads such a water pumping / AC/water heating -

NoMoretrolling,

Using your own analysis, 800k will get you almost 5 pairs of the quanta batteries over a ten year period if you grow the capital by at least 10% annually assuming zero inflation (it is not the most difficult thing to grow by 10% above nominal inflation).

Also the life cycle chart you posted shows 600 - 700 cycles at 50% DOD for the quanta. So 5 sets of the quanta to the 1 set of BB is more accurate statement.

Therefore a lithium battery would need to last over 10 years (80% original capacity) before it shows a cost advantage over lead acid and this period is not usually covered by warranty.

In Nigeria, unless you are willing to go the DIY route (which increases the probability of failure), the cost-benefit of lithium over lead acid is not as clear cut as you make it appear.

In my opinion, Lithium makes a cost effective scenario if you have fairly stable Nepa ( atleast 10-12 hours a day) and/or a diesel generator with your solar . In such a scenario you can severally undersize the lithium ( using ESS) but still cycle the lithium to maximize the solar use unlike pure offgrid or standby applications

The lithium charges by a factor of 3-4 times faster allowing you to reduce use of gen or running your solar on PEAK .. e.g in my case a 10 KWH battery can charge at 7 KWp ( 140 Amps DC) from my solar but to utilize 140 amps charge rate I will need 1400 AH in Trojan ( C10)
i.e. 7 x 4x 120,000 NGN= 3.3 million - which is the same cost of 200 AH Lithium

What the lithium brings for me is the peace of mind that I do not have to worry about equalizing, water topping , if the battries are discharged or fully charged etc.

( i have on few occasions run my battery down to 2 % SOC and charged in the morning after the sun has comeup without any adverse effects smiley

p.s.
In my own case I have 10 KWp solar , 20 KVA GEN and 15 KVA + 6 KVA ( 3 phase) inverter all supported by a small 10 KWP/ 10 KWH BYD

Imagine how much space a 28 battery trojan setup will take

and yes the battries are ensured a good ventilation by using exhuast fan No airconditioning is needed . Although I am thinking of adding 5000 BTU solar operated unit to keep the inverters cool if I can find the correct unit .

This is what happened.

Whilst in use like every other night, the inverter tripped and it was lights-out in the whole house.

Went back to the inverter, everything was fine. Flicked the red switch off and on again, the inverter booted up and next thing I heard was " a loud pop and a spark"

Then lights-out again. That was it. So I wonder where and how "any short circuit" happened; unless some village people

have been doing things downstairs while I was up.

By the looks of it the wires melted damaging the terminal. A loose connection or insufficient area contact can do that

Thanks for the info guys.

I have more questions. Lets say you have six rental units. These units have the exact same configuration - 2 fans, 1 tv, LED lights. Occupancy of these units ranges from 25% (quarter full) to 100% during the course of the year. Lets say you want to use an inverter to power these units as a standby with a minimum of 12 hours per day:

1) Would you install 6 Separate inverters and batteries in each unit or 1 big inverter with a battery bank?
2) What battery configuration would you need to supply at least 12 hours of standby power per day?
3) Please explain which setup is more efficient, cheaper, easier to maintain

Thanks

I believe a central system with regulation on individual flats is cheaper and easier to maintain in the long run. The load /utilization factor ( diversity ratio) is much lower for 6 flats combined than a single one and will result in overall lower battery size. Also, it may be much easier to support a single system with a small generator in the short run than to build a large system from the start

I believe this is the best approach.. the charging is capped but Extra power can be used by the load, so if you get 40 amp from panel 15 will be used for charging the remaining will supply load if load is available, else the remaining 25 will waste

Do you mean the extra power will not be used when eco mode is not enabled?

The power saving works only if the solar is connected to the NRG 1500. What you will have to do is manually cut off the Grid to the inverter so the solar is utilized by inverter.

A better approach will be to connect at least two panels to the inverter and rest to External CC. That way when the batteries are charged ( and solar available as sensed by inverter based on PV input) it will automatically revert to using battery instead of grid and change to grid in the evening if the solar disappears or the battery is discharged (I believe it changes state when 50 % SOC is depleted but I am not so sure)

personally, I am using the inverter to supply security cabins with 20 inch TV, DSTV decoder, standing FAN and 4 LED bulbs coupled with 250 W x 2 panels and 200 AHx 4 12 V flooded luminous ( 5 old batteries from my own setup)

1. There's really no way best way to determine best solar panels as some tier 2 might even be better than tier 1 companies best bet is to look for specifications of each solar panel and it helps to buy tier 1 as you are usually likely to get a better product. I recommend jinko solar. Buy direct from supplier for cheaper rates. Eg 340w mono goes for 60k
2. Luminous hybrid comes with pwm controller you'd be better of with the increased power from an mppt controller considering your battery size which would need equalizing at least 2 times a year. Get fangpusun blue solar 50a from AliExpress for 37k for led version which solves the problem as it is mppt and has equalizing function. If going for the fangpusun update yourself about it pros and cons which majorly is you must not update but at its 1.16 firmware its still very much a good product

if the inverter is charging at 15 amp in presence of grid then the CC will only contribute 5 amps if the grid is not available then CC will add max 22 amps ( max C10 charge rate) if set higher the battery life will be reduced. It is an overkill to add separate CC considering the 1500 VA inverter is actually a 900 Watt inverter at 25 DEG C

mktinsight:
I recently installed a 1.5Kva Luminous Solar Hybrid Inverter with 2 220ah Luminous Flooded Inverlast batteries. The load on the inverter is roughly 10 5Watt LED bulbs, 2 70w fans and a 32 inch LED TV with GoTV decoder.

I want to add some solar panels and I have several questions:

1) What Solar panels do you recommend with PROVEN high production efficiencies? I read of Flames, Suntech, Canadian Solar, Yingli, etc. etc.

2) The Luminous Solar Hybrid has an in-built CC of 40a. Does anyone have experience with this inverter? Should I still buy a separate MPPT for the solar setup or use the inbuilt?

3) I read about the importance of equalizing batteries. How often should I do this for my batteries, what charger should I use and for how long?

Thanks.

If it the NRG 1500 I have installed a couple of them. Beware that the CC is not delivering 40 amp to battery. the charging current is limited to max 15 Amp in fast charge mode and 10 amp in Icharge ( efficient mode). The reason is the inverter is recommended to be used with 150 Ah x 2 tubular flooded batteries in India. Unless your NEPA is stable you will take a long time to charge 200 AH at 10 amp

The higher wattage of solar panels although can be used by the inverter to supply to load in Eco mode ( activated using white push button) even if grid is available

Hello Good morning, been a while although you do send personal messages via WhatsApp if you need to commune with me .. Simply overlook unnecessary biased assumptions as I see nothing spectacular or criminal minded castigations as you made it look , so try ignore as most men do ! An adjusted/edited post per page might be for a target audience and I don't see how some monitor such when not interested ! "He who wears the shoes knows where it itches" , those who post ain't equal to most who call n transact if seriously interested , simply ignore if not interested ! Don't be too quick to always judge one tho as we don't have same individual characteristics smiley ... Thanks

Could I suggest a simpler and more elegant solution? since the item is too much even for interested parties to look at .

Put all items in an excel file with drop down to sort by category - The file may be easier for you to maintain and users to use( e.g. forward to friends, associated while recommending you as a supplier)

Either attach the file to post or store it on google drive/dropbox and only post with a link along with your contact deatils and promotional message

You can highlight only newly added itms or priceses dropped significantly ( say 20%) in the post to grab attention of users

I am looking at the manual it's written 320vdc as the normal operating voltage but the attached picture reads 240vdc.

Irrespective am trying to understand what this means, does it mean that it is until I have sufficient number of panels in series totalling 240v that the stuff can work?

So if a solar panel Max PV is 32v I will need a least 8 panels before I can use this inverter?

The MPP solar mentions 120 to 450 V DC as MPPT range with ideal as 240 V DC for max efficiency and max 500 V DC

for series connection Min you need 120V / Vmpp of panel and max 500DC /Voc of panel - best combo is 250V DC/Vmpp of panel

Also take care when selecting fuses /breaker etc . They must be rated 250 or 600 V DC based on your final selection . may of them in market like midnight solar are rated only upto 150 V DC

Looks good!

How is the Knife Switch handling arcing with DC currents passing through when you (dis)connect the PV array?

Knife switch definitely NO I don't recommend it even for AC they tend to get loose and create hotspot after frequent use . Also Knife switch will not only arc but continue arcing after opening on heavy load

typically AC contactors for DC duty are derated despite having ARC chute ( by 1.41 RMS ratio) also normally the arc chutes for DC are different to limit high voltages which might damage the connected equipment
