Joy as Owo Catholic church reopens ten months after terror attack (Photos) Catholic faithful in Owo, Owo local government area of Ondo State and environs were full of joy when the St. Francis Catholic Church in the locality reopened for worshippers 10 months after it was attacked by terrorists.
Recall that on June 5, 2022, heavily armed terrorists attacked the church with explosives killing over 40 persons and injuring 70 others.
During the attack, the assailants disguised themselves as worshippers, maiming both old and young worshippers.
But ten months after the incident, worshippers filled the building to celebrate the 2023 Easter.
There was tight security as police, military operatives, hunters and the security arm of the church code named Men of Order and Discipline (MOD) were drafted to strategic places to secure the locality
Bishop of Ondo Catholic Diocese, Revd Father Jude Arogundade presided over the reopening of the church as part of activities to mark Easter Sunday.

Bishop Arogundade also faulted government at all levels for failing to secure lives and property.
He said: “We have to call ourselves back to the greater understanding of what is happening in our society today. I have never seen a nation so comfortable watching the killings of its citizens on daily basis in hundreds and nothing has been done for the past 15years.
“It doesn’t happen in other places I don’t know why the Govt. refuse to apologize to the citizens they failed. A government which failed or cannot protect its citizens is not worthy to be called a government.
“I wish to say this without fear of anyone that the government of this country has failed us and you press men should record me very well, they have failed in the area of protecting the lives and properties of the people.
“Almost on daily basis we hear people being killed in their tens and hundreds, many people have even forgotten what happened in this church ten years ago, because many more have happened without the world paying attention.
“The government must wake up and show strength and courage and make sure those who carried out the evil attack that took place in this church and the evil going around our country are brought to book and punished accordingly.

Education › Just In: Jamb Fixes New Dates For 2023 Utme by Prestar(op): 5:31pm On Apr 09, 2023 |
JUST IN: JAMB fixes new dates for 2023 UTME The Joint Admissions and Matriculation Board (JAMB) has announced a new date for the commencement of the 2023 Unified Tertiary Matriculation Examinations (UTME).
The board disclosed this in a statement signed by its Head of Public Affairs and Protocol, Dr Fabian Benjamin in Abuja on Sunday, April 9, 2023.
Benjamin said the UTME which was earlier scheduled to commence on April 29, would now start on April 25, 2023.
He also said the board would hold its rescheduled mock-UTME on April 18, 2023.
” It would be recalled that JAMB had earlier conducted its 2023 Mock-UTME on Thursday, March 30 in 725 centres across the country
” However, the exercise ran into some technical hitches in some centres, thereby denying some candidates the opportunity to sit for the examination.
” The board’s mock examination was designed for the purpose of testing its preparedness and that of its partners for the UTME as well as give prospective candidates the opportunity to have hands-on experience of the CBT test environment.
” It is, therefore, in order to give those candidates, who were unable to sit for the examination owing to no fault of theirs, the opportunity to take the examination that the mock examination had been rescheduled to hold on Tuesday, April 18,,” he said.
He said that candidates who were present and screened for the examination but could not sit for it had been rescheduled to retake the mock examination on April 18.
Benjamin, therefore, said the result of the candidates who successfully took the mock examination on March 30, had been released.
March 30, had been released.
UPDATE: You can receive News updates directly on your WhatsApp, click “HERE” to join our group.
He also said the board had brought forward the conduct of its 2023 UTME which was earlier scheduled to hold from Saturday, April 29, to Tuesday, April 25.
He said the adjustment in the date of the UTME was to accommodate some other major and critical national assignments.
” By so doing, the board hopes that no citizen will be denied the opportunity of exercising their civic responsibilities.
” It should be noted that the board does not have the liberty of shifting forward its examination as other public examinations are billed to commence their exercises in the early part of May 2023.
“Yet another factor is the need to accommodate those institutions with stable academic calendar to resume as scheduled,” he added.
He said the board would continue to partner with relevant agencies of government to ensure that its candidates got the best.
He said the board also solicited the understanding of all as it delivered on its critical mandate. SOURCE https:///just-in-jamb-fixes-new-dates-for-2023-utme/

Crime › BREAKING: Bandits Kidnap 80 Children In Zamfara by Prestar(op): 6:44pm On Apr 07, 2023 |
Armed men suspected to be bandits have abducted no fewer than 80 children from the Tsafe Local Government Area of Zamfara State.
The children who were between the ages of 12 and 17, were reportedly in the bush fetching firewood at around 8:00 a.m., Friday, April 7, 2023, when the bandits rounded them up and led them away into the forest.
The parents of the abducted children who spoke to BBC Hausa expressed their shock and anguish over the incident.
They revealed that the bandits had not yet reached out to them to make any demands as of the time of reporting.
In a related development, the Kaduna State Government has said that a report published by a newspaper, alleging that bandits kidnapped scores of citizens on the Abuja-Kaduna Highway was false and misleading, as no such incident occurred on the highway which straddles five LGAs across Kaduna and Niger states.
Samuel Aruwan ,Commissioner, Ministry of Internal Security and Home Affairs, Kaduna State,in a statement; explained that an excerpt from the inaccurate report with the headline ‘Bandits Abduct Travellers On Abuja-Kaduna Highway’ reads: “Scores of travellers were abducted after bandits opened fire on motorists in Iche community, some few kilometres away from Kagarko town along the Abuja-Kaduna highway.”
Aruwan stated that ” contrary to the above, reports received from security agencies and the Kagarko Local Government Council indicated that armed men barricaded the Gwaje village axis of the Kagarko-Jere Road on Wednesday 5th April 2023, and kidnapped an unspecified number of occupants from two vehicles, a Volkswagen Golf Wagon (Reg No. LGT228XA) and Volkswagen Passat (Reg No. FSK556AV). The vehicles were subsequently found empty.”
“The coordinates of the scene of the incident (Gwaje village) are 9°29’34″N 7°39’18″E, which give a location nowhere close to, or even off the Abuja-Kaduna Highway as reported.”
“From available facts, the incident did not occur at Iche as reported by the media. The description which gives Kagarko town as being along Abuja-Kaduna highway is likewise inaccurate.”
“The Kaduna State Government expresses its displeasure over the misleading piece of reportage which has unfortunately gained undue traction on social media and beyond.”
The Government views inaccurate and misleading reports as a major disservice to the campaign against banditry being prosecuted by officers and men of security forces, at the risk of their very lives.”
“The Kaduna State Government is following up closely with security agencies on all issues regarding security and safety of citizens,” the statement added. SOURCE https:///breaking-bandits-kidnap-80-children-in-zamfara/

Jobs/Vacancies › Spain Needs Over 60,000 Additional Workers In Hospitality Industry by Prestar(op): 10:30pm On Mar 31, 2023 |
Despite the record number of international tourists that are choosing Spain as their favourite travel destination, the country is dealing with a significant labour shortage noted in the hospitality industry.
According to Euronews report, among the biggest struggles of authorities in Spain is to find workers to meet the demand, STAR POTTER reports.
The National Institute of Statistics (INE) revealed that in January alone, Spain welcomed 4.1 million international tourists, accounting for an increase of 65.8 per cent compared to the same period last year.
The same noted that visitors from other countries spent €5,218 million on their trip as well as stay, or €2,178 million (71.7 per cent) more than in compared to January last year figures.
In addition, NIE figures released on March 23 showed that in February this year, there was registered a total of 24 per cent increase with 16.8 million overnight stays compared to the same period in last year’s data.
The National Institute of Statistics report revealed that the increase in demand has also led to an increase in hotel prices, which stand at an average of 99.80 euros per room, or 13 per cent more compared to 2022 and 20 per cent more in comparison to 2019 statistics.
Still, Spain needs a large number of workers in tourism and hospitality in order to cope with the demand. Leading companies, including Melia, launched new campaigns on social networks in order to attract young talent workers.
In order to manage the current situation, Spain’s Minister of Inclusion, Social Security and Migration, Jose Luis Escriva, last year said that the country would ease work permit rules for foreigners as a response to labour shortages noted in several industries, including the tourism sector.
“We are evaluating different aspects of the migration law and where there is room to improve it … in order to address bottlenecks in Spain’s labour market,” he pointed out.
He confirmed that the country would grant a larger number of temporary visas for sectors that need workers in order to help the country recover faster from the damages caused by the spread of the Coronavirus and its new variants.
In addition, the data published by the country’s government revealed that Spain’s social security recorded a total of 2,549,823 foreign affiliates in February, or 17,478 more workers than in the first month of this year. However, the country is struggling with a significant worker shortage. SOURCE: https:///spain-needs-over-60000-additional-workers-in-hospitality-industry/

Education › JUST IN: ASUU Declares Total And Indefinite Strike In Taraba by Prestar(op): 3:50pm On Mar 31, 2023 |
JUST IN: ASUU declares total and indefinite strike in Taraba The Taraba State University chapter of the Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU) has declared a total, comprehensive, and indefinite strike action in the institution.
This follows a permission by the ASUU national to the state branch to embark on the strike action to press home its demands and the state government’s rebuttal of claims that it is not owing workers salaries.
Arising from a congress meeting, the union insists that the rationale behind their action is hinged on government’s failure to pay earned academic allowances, promotion arrears, fractional payment of salaries to staff as well as unsettled staff pension and gratuity scheme.
Samuel Shitaa, the Taraba State University ASUU Chairman, noted that other reasons for the industrial action include non-implementation of agreements and perimeter fencing of the institution.
Reacting to the strike action, the state government through the Commissioner for Tertiary Education, Edward Baraya, said the union was yet to communicate its action to the state government
He wondered why ASUU would take such a decision when the present government is doing everything possible to address the issues before leaving office.
Also reacting, the special adviser to the governor on media and publicity Bala Dan-Abu in a press statement said the outgoing governor is owing no worker salaries.
The communique stating the government’s position on the issue reads; “The outgoing administration of his excellency, arc Darius Dickson Ishaku, executive governor of Taraba state, is not owing any group of workers in the state monthly salaries and, therefore, will not be leaving behind any burden arising from unpaid emoluments for the in-coming administration.
“This clarification became necessary following a press statement issued recently on behalf of the in-coming administration of Lt Col Agbu Kefas, the governor-elect which contained a promise to pay salary arrears in its first 100 days.
“This veiled accusation is wrong and unnecessary. The Ishaku administration never toyed with the welfare of workers in its eight years of stewardship in the state. It had consistently paid their salaries since it assumed office in 2015, most of the time before the end of every month.
“We find this so-called promise to pay outstanding salary arrears made on behalf of the governor-elect not only misplaced but also misleading.
“It is also surprising coming from an in-coming administration widely known and regarded to be an offspring of the present government of his excellency, arc Darius Ishaku.
“We think we needed to set the records straight, hence this rebuttal.” SOURCE: https:///just-in-ASUU-declares-total-and-indefinite-strike-in-taraba/

The United States (US) Department of State has increased by 15 percent visa in fees for certain non-immigrant visa applications, including travel visas.
In the statement issued yesterday, March 29, 2023, the price adjustment was said to come about a decade after the last review for non-petition-based non-immigrant visa applications (NIVs) in 2012, and certain other NIV fees update in 2014.
It said the fee for B-1/B-2 visitor visas, Border Crossing Cards for Mexican citizens aged 15 and above, and student and exchange visitor visas will increase from $160 to $185.
Also, the fees for certain non immigrant visas for temporary workers (H, L, O, P, Q, and R categories) will increase from $190 to $205.

“The Department uses an Activity-Based Costing methodology to calculate, annually, the cost of providing consular services, including visa services. The fees for most non-petition based NIVs were last updated in 2012, and certain other NIV fees were last updated in 2014.
“Other consular fees are not affected by this rule, including the waiver of the two-year residency required fee for certain exchange visitors.

Crime › 28-year-old Lady Kills 6 Including Three Children In US School Mass Shooting by Prestar(op): 12:22pm On Mar 28, 2023 |
28-year-old lady kills 6 including three children in US school mass shooting A 28-year-old heavily-armed woman has killed six people including three young children at a private elementary school in Nashville, United States of America.
The woman was later shot dead by police in the incident that occurred on Monday, March 27, 2023.
Chief of Police John Drake named the suspect as Audrey Hale — a 28-year-old female, who the officer later said identified as transgender.
Hale had maps of the school, left behind a manifesto, and was “prepared for a confrontation with law enforcement,” the police chief told reporters following the latest outburst of gun violence to stun the United States.
Armed with at least two assault rifles and a handgun, Hale entered the Christian Covenant School from a side entrance, allegedly shooting through a door — firing multiple shots while advancing through the building, according to police.
They said officers were on the scene within about 15 minutes of receiving the first emergency call around 10:00 am (1500 GMT), engaging the shooter who returned fire before being shot dead.
Police identified the six victims, saying one of the three children was eight years old and two were age nine, while the adults killed were age 60 to 61.
Television images showed young children holding hands as they filed out of the school, and one searing photograph showed a child sobbing through the window of her yellow school bus as it pulled away from the crime scene.
Avery Myrick said her mother, a pre-kindergarten teacher at Covenant, hid as shots rang out through the school.
“She said she was hiding in the closet, and that there was shooting all over and that they had potentially tried to get into her room, and just that she loved us,” Myrick told WSMV4 television, an NBC local affiliate.
When she heard her mother was safe it brought “a ton of relief
“But you know, you’re still hurting for the people out there who might not get that call,” she said.
School shootings are alarmingly common in the United States, where the proliferation of firearms has soared in recent years.
President Joe Biden described the latest shooting as “sick” and said gun violence was tearing the nation’s “soul,” as he urged Congress to pass a ban on the assault weapons commonly used in mass shootings.
“It’s ripping our communities apart, ripping the soul of this nation, ripping at the very soul of the nation,” he said.
A Nashville fire department spokesperson, Kendra Loney, said all unharmed students were escorted out of the building with faculty and staff.
“But we are sure that they heard the chaos that was surrounding this, so we do have mental health specialists and professionals that are at that reunification site for both the students and the families.” https:///28-year-old-lady-kills-6-including-three-children-in-us-school-mass-shooting/
