The Nigerian government has announced that it will postpone the 2023 census, originally scheduled for March 29, to May 2023.

“They asked for parliamentary approval on a Np 2.8 billion contract to procure census software,” he said.

A distraught mother had gone online to focus her attention on punishing her 10-year-old daughter.

Ballinaada appealed to Nigerians to come and help her family, saying Marvelous had no political inclinations or affiliation and was only a minor.

She lamented: “This is to inform you all, that my daughter, Marvelous Barinaadaa, was exited from Odomola Secondary School today 14th March 2023. by the School Principal, just because my daughter used Peter Obi’s poster paper to wrap her notebook for school. And this girl is just ten years old.

”She didn’t know anything about politics, but she was sent away from school without informing the parents because they say we support Peter Obi and Labour Party. Please, Is this act by the School Principal good? See what the school principal wrote in that letter. And after we will say we are one Nigeria.”

A JSS2 student was given an expulsion notice to leave school for violating instructions allegedly given to public schools by the Lagos state government.

According to a photo of the resignation letter, the principal of Odomora Middle School told Marvelous to go home and stand up for Obi, saying it was "against the wishes of Lagos residents."

Mr. Pidom, an investigative journalist, and Mr. Apagun Saka Shola, president of the Odomora Secondary School Students' Association OSSOSA, confirmed that the Lagos State Ministry of Education had intervened in the matter.

The principal was said to have been invited to the Araussa State Secretariat to answer questions.

However, Shola said he was sent home on charges that Marvelous allegedly harassed and distracted him by distributing posters of Obi throughout the classroom.

He pointed out that the principal's move is to reduce the annoyance caused by students sharing posters with other students.

The OSSOSA president said: “I have been able to reach the principal. The issue circulating is far from the truth. There is a directive to stop all forms of campaign in the classroom. As some political parties use the students to campaign in class.

“The principal did not expel or suspend the student. She sent her home for causing havoc and disturbance in the class during recess by chatting and sharing LP posters to her mates.”

” Again, the Permanent Secretary, Ministry of Education is on the issue,” Shola added.

Politics › Emefiele Dumps APC For Labour Party, Donates N500m New Notes by Prestar(op): 10:46am On Mar 13, 2023
Emefiele dumps APC for Labour Party, donates N500m new notes to fight Tinubu in Lagos governorship race

The Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN) Governor, Godwin Emefiele has reportedly dumped the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC) to join Peter Obi’s Labour Party (LP) following the announcement of Bola Ahmed Tinubu as the President-Elect of Nigeria.

In an exclusive report by The Nation, Godwin Emefiele was alleged to have ramped up a cash sum of ₦500 million to fund the campaign of the Lagos State Labour Party in the upcoming governorship elections.

The CBN governor who currently faces heavy criticism over the unending Naira scarcity in Nigeria was also said to have secured the services of high military officials to ensure Tinubu’s party, the APC, does not win the Lagos governorship race.

Recall that Godwin Emefiele contested unsuccessfully for the presidential ticket of the APC, a move many Nigerians described as illegal and politicisation of the country’s treasury.

The CBN which Emefiele is controlling served as the main banker of the Federal government and undertakes most of the Federal Government banking businesses within and outside the country.

The Bank also provides banking services to the state and local governments and may act as banker to institutions, funds, or corporations set up by the Federal, State, and Local Governments. The CBN also finances the government in periods of temporary budget shortfalls through Ways and Means Advances subject to limits imposed by law.

Sources told that The Nation that the apex bank has released N500 million in new bank notes to shore up the campaign of the Labour Party (LP) in the state.

LP secured an upset against APC in the February 25 presidential polls in the state when its candidate, Peter Obi, polled 582,454 votes as against the 577,606 scored by Tinubu’s APC.

It was learnt that the N500 million windfall was mobilised through high-level CBN agents in Lagos. It was described as “Oga’s own contribution to the takeover-Lagos-from- Tinubu’s-influence, now that he has become the president-elect and will be relocating to Abuja”.

It was also learnt that Emefiele had worked to ensure that Tinubu did not emerge as presidential candidate and president-elect.

Aside Emefiele’s N500 million cash, the LP has also reportedly received $2 million cash from a famous retired billionaire general, who hails from the North.

Sources told The Nation that the cash bonanza is intended to give undue advantage to the LP candidate, Mr. Gbadebo Rhodes-Vivour, over the two other major contestants – incumbent Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu of the APC and Mr. Olajide Adediran of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), whose campaign and mobilisation have been seriously affected by the cash squeeze caused by Emefiele’s Naira redesign policy.

Besides, Emefiele, who hails from Delta North, is said to be an enthusiastic promoter of the “Igbo agenda” to install “our own in Alausa come May 29”.

To perfect the plot, the cooperation of a senior military officer in command position in Lagos, is said to have been secured by Emefiele.

The commander, the sources said, is expected to provide “military muscle” to the “agenda” to take over Lagos.

He was said to have similarly played a “spoiler role” on February 25 by deliberately deploying troops to provide “cover” for the massive rigging in Ajah, Lekki areas in favour of LP’s Obi.

The commander also allegedly provided “cover” for the massive rigging reported in Amuwo-Odofin, Ojo, Alaba and Iba areas. For instance, troops at his behest, reportedly “detained” the Oniba of Ibaland in his palace, ostensibly to “prevent him from being able to mobilise his people to vote Tinubu”. Troops similarly invaded the palace of Elegushi in Ikateland and openly brutalised APC supporters in viral videos. Oba Saheed Elegushi is known to be a staunch Tinubu supporter.

The latest secret cash largesse to the LP candidate’s campaign is coming at a time many Nigerians groan under acute cash scarcity as daily languish in endless queues at banking halls and ATM centres across the country without being able to access their savings, despite a Supreme Court order on March 3 mandating the revalidation of the N200, N500 and N1,000 notes till December 31, 2023.

Education › Nigerian Universities Extend Resumption To March 21 by Prestar(op): 4:15pm On Mar 10, 2023
Nigerian universities extend resumption to March 21

Some Nigerian universities have shifted their resumption date to Tuesday, March 21, 2023.

Recall that the Federal Government directed all Universities and Inter-University Centres to shut down and academic activities suspended from February 22 to March 14 over the February 25 and March 11, 2023, general elections.

However, the schools decided to extend the break after the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) shifted the March 11 election to March 18.

A statement signed by the University of Lagos on Friday, March 10, 2023, stated that the Vice-Chancellor, Prof. Folasade Ogunsola, approved that the resumption of academic activities be postponed to Tuesday, March 21, 2023, adding that all other activities of the university, including inaugural lectures and meetings (excluding teaching), should continue as scheduled.

It explained that the postponement of resumption to Tuesday, March 21, 2023, was due to the re-scheduling of the governorship and state House of Assembly elections from Saturday, March 11, 2023, to Saturday, March 18, 2023.

It read, “It would be recalled that the federal government had directed that students of higher institutions across the country should vacate their schools ahead of the 2023 general elections. As a result, the University Senate had approved the suspension of academic activities (teaching) from Tuesday, February 21, 2023, to Tuesday, March 14, 2023.

“Once again, members of the university community are implored to remain safe and security conscious as well as orderly, civil and responsible in utterances and engagements, online and offline.

“Further updates would be provided as the need arises in the coming days.”

Similarly, the management of Godfrey Okoye University (GOUNI) in Enugu has shifted the institution’s resumption date to March 21.

In a statement on Thursday, Christian Anieke, GOUNI’s vice-chancellor, said the institution will no longer resume on March 15 as earlier scheduled.

“They said the shift in the resumption of academic activities by the students had been approved by the Senate of the University. The students are now expected to resume on March 21st for the second semester of the 2022/2023 academic session,” he said.

The vice-chancellor said the move was to allow students of the institution to participate in the elections.

Anieke said the senate of the university did not want a situation where the students would resume and then return to places they registered to cast their votes on election day.

The vice-chancellor informed the students that there would not be another break once they return on March 21.

He said the institution would operate three months of uninterrupted teaching followed by examinations as soon as students return to the campus.

No fewer than 300 passengers have been left stranded as a train on Warri-Itakpe route derailed.

This is coming barely a month after no fewer than 20 passengers were abducted from a train station in Igueben, Edo State.

According to sources in the train, the incident happened inside Kogi forest, with many of the passengers said to have abandoned the train for fear of being taken hostage.

It was gathered that the train left Warri early Sunday and got derailed at around 12pm inside the forest between Ajaokuta and Itakpe.

The Delta and Kogi State police commands could not immediately confirm the incident, however, the Manager, Warri/Itakpe railway, told our correspondent he was just on his way to the scene and would give the details later.

According to a staff member of the Nigerian Railway Corporation at the Itakpe Station, the incident took place at about 20km from the the destination of the train.

The source also said some of the NRC workers got vehicles that evacuated the passengers from the forest where the incident took place.

“The place is not far from the last bus stop, so some of our staff members called cab from the station at Itakpe to evacuate all of them.

“It’s not far just 20km from the incident scene. Nobody was injured,” he told newsmen.

Speaking on what caused the train to derail, he said, “We can’t access the cause now, our engineer went there to check, just that the locomotive dropped form the track.

Confirming the incident, another source within the NRC said, “it’s today, in the morning, at Kogi Station, it’s a station where passengers don’t stop; they closed the station. It’s like somebody tampered with the track and when the train reached there, it derailed; almost four coaches derailed they almost capsised,” the source said.
