Crime › A Nigerian Soldier Shoots Okada Man, Kills Nursing Mother, Baby Over N200 Bribe by Prestar(op): 2:44pm On Mar 22, 2023 |
Triggered-happy Nigerian soldier shoots Okada man, kills nursing mother, baby over N200 bribe A Nigerian soldier has reportedly shot a commercial motorcycle rider and his passenger, a nursing mother, and her baby, in the Babanna community in Borgu LGA of Niger State.
It was learnt that a gunshot on the Okada rider pierced him and killed his passenger, a nursing mother, and her baby.
It was gathered that the incident happened on Monday evening, March 21, 2023, when the victims were returning home from the Babanna weekly market.
The soldier involved was said to have stopped the Okada rider for a bribe of N200, which they usually collect from motorcycle riders, but the man could not respond positively.
A resident, Saidu Babanna, who shared details of the incident, told newsmen that because the Okada man could not pay the money, an argument ensued between him and the soldier, which led to the shooting.
“One of the soldiers deployed in Babanna to protect lives and property shot three people because of a N200 bribe. When the victims were entering Babanna in the morning, soldiers collected N200 from them at their checking point, and when they were returning from Babanna to Nigangi in Benin Republic, the soldiers demanded another N200 from them, which they couldn’t afford to pay. That led to a soldier opening fire and killing the three people on a motorcycle on the spot,” Daily Trust quoted the source saying.
Another resident who pleaded anonymity told reporters that many soldiers at the Benin Republic border always stopped them and collected N200 from them.
He explained further that when the victims were returning from the Market, the same soldiers stopped them again and demanded N200 money which the Okada man refused to give.
“They started arguing, and the Okada man kicked his motorcycle and zoomed off and a soldier also kicked another motorcycle and followed him until he overtook him. He then fired the gun, and bullets penetrated the stomach of the motorcycle rider and hit the woman he was carrying, killing the woman and the baby instantly,” the eyewitness explained.
He said the soldier was arrested and taken to the 221 Battalion, Kainji, New-Bussa, Borgu LGA, following a call to military authorities by the district head.
He said the woman and her baby died on the spot while the Okada man was responding to treatment in a hospital in Benin Republic.
Another source said, “It was the arrest of the soldier and the intervention of the district head that saved the situation from degenerating into a fracas between youths and soldiers.”
Effort to get the reaction of the Niger State Police Command’s spokesman, DSP Wasiu Abiodun, was not successful.
But the chairman of Borgu LGA of Niger State, Alhaji Suleiman Yarima, confirmed the incident, saying the woman and her baby died but that the motorcyclist survived and he is receiving treatment at a hospital in Parakou in Benin Republic.
‘’The victims are from Benin Republic, who came to the market in Babanna to shop. It’s a weekly market. The bodies were taken to Benin Republic and can’t confirm their burial for now. However, investigation is ongoing,’’ he said in a text message sent to our reporter late yesterday. SOURCE: https:///a-nigerian-soldier-shoots-okada-man-kills-nursing-mother-baby-over-n200-bribe/

Crime › Pastor Closes Down Church After Winning 100 Million Through Sports Betting by Prestar(op): 9:25am On Mar 22, 2023 |
Pastor closes down church after winning 100 million through sports betting A Ugandan pastor, David Ochieng has abandoned his ministerial work after hitting a huge sum of money through sports betting.
Local media reports that he won 100 million UGX (N21 million) and decided to shutdown his church thereby leaving members in disbelief and confusion.
When he realised that he is now 100 million shillings richer, he closed down the building and left members of his congregation stranded when they came for midweek service.
Members of the church who visited the premises were shocked when they saw that the gate was locked and did not know what to do.
The clergyman was contacted and he confessed that the reason he chose to work in the vineyard of God was strictly to earn income to survive and not because he was called.
Ochieng further described the winning as a blessing from God and a swift way to get him out of poverty he was in because he could not sustain himself with money from his poor congregation. SOURCE https:///pastor-closes-down-church-after-winning-100-million-through-sports-betting/

Christianity Etc › Ramadan Moon Not Sighted In Saudi Arabia, Fasting Begins On Thursday by Prestar(op): 9:48pm On Mar 21, 2023 |
JUST IN: Ramadan moon not sighted in Saudi Arabia, fasting begins on Thursday The Ramadan crescent moon was not sighted in Saudi Arabia on Tuesday evening, meaning the holy month will officially begin on Thursday, March 23, 2023, instead of Wednesday.
The Saudi Arabia Kingdom moon-sighting committee in Makkah, on Tuesday, March 21, 2023.
Muslims follow a lunar calendar consisting of 12 months in a year of 354 or 355 days. Sighting a crescent moon heralds the start of Ramadan, the ninth month of the Islamic calendar.
The starting date of the dawn-dusk fasting month is determined by both lunar calculations and physical sightings of a new moon.
Ramadan is observed by more than 1.8 billion Muslims worldwide and is considered a month of fasting and spirituality. It is believed to be the month when the Quran was revealed to the Prophet Mohammed.
Fasting during Ramadan is one of the five pillars of Islam and is mandatory for all healthy Muslims. However, young children, sick individuals, travelers, and women who are pregnant, nursing, or menstruating are exempt.
Muslims have followed the tradition of looking for the crescent moon for thousands of years to determine the start of Ramadan as well as the two major holidays in Islam, Eid al-Fitr and Eid al-Adha.
It should be noted that although the moon was not sighted in Saudi Arabia, UAE, and other Mideastern countries, the Nigerian Supreme Council for Islamic Affairs (NSCIA) has advised Nigerian Muslims to look out for the crescent (moon) of Ramadan 1444AH from Wednesday. Crime › Tragedy As 75-year-old Woman Sets Son And His Family Ablaze In Ondo by Prestar(op): 6:51pm On Mar 21, 2023 |
Tragedy as 75-year-old grandmother sets son, daughter-in-law and grandchildren ablaze in Ondo A 75-year-old grandmother, Iforiti Oloro, has allegedly set her son, daughter-law, and grandchildren blaze in Ondo state.
According to reports on Tuesday, March 20, 2023, the tragedy occurred at Aponmu, a suburb of Akure, Ondo’s capital city, at the weekend.
The septuagenarian living in the same compound with her son was accused of having woken up in the middle of the night and allegedly set the house on fire while the family was asleep.
A resident in the community, Bayo Adegboyega, who spoke to The Gazette, confirmed the incident.
Adegboyega explained that the residents noticed the family’s house was on fire on Saturday.
“We noticed that the building was on fire around 2:00 a.m., and all the family members were at home,” he told The Gazette. “I had to join neighbours close to the building in putting off the fire by breaking the windows to gain entry.”
Adegboyega added, “Sadly, by the time we entered, the man (Victor Oloro), his wife (Racheal), and two children ( Toluwani and Blessing) had been affected by the fire.”
He also mentioned that the burnt family members were taken to a state hospital in Akure but were rejected due to the degrees of burns suffered from the fire incident.
“So, we rushed them to the Federal Medical Centre in Owo, but unfortunately, we lost the last born on arrival while on Sunday night, the man and his wife died. Only the firstborn is alive but in a critical condition,” Adegboyega added.
While describing the incident as “bizarre and shocking,” Adegboyega said the residents later learned that the grandmother allegedly set the building on fire.
“It was yesterday (Monday) that we got to know that the old woman got some dry palm fronds and the little petrol her son kept in a gallon, spread it around the house, and set the house on fire,” the resident claimed. “While confessing, the woman said she set the house on fire because her son and his wife were allegedly starving her of food.”
Police spokesman Funmilayo Odunlami-Omisanya confirmed the incident on Tuesday morning. She, however, said that the divisional police officer in the community was still awaiting the details of the incident.
“I’m still awaiting full details of the incident from the DPO in charge of the area. So, I would advise you to give me more time to gather the facts,” the police officer explained. SOURCE: https:///tragedy-as-75-year-old-grandmother-sets-son-daughter-in-law-and-grandchildren-ablaze-in-ondo/

Crime › Drama As Beggar Arrested With Cash Worth N37.3m ($81k) Hidden In Artificial Legs by Prestar(op): 5:12pm On Mar 17, 2023 |
A beggar posing as an amputee hiding Dh300,00 which is equivalent to N37.3m ($81k) cash in fake artificial legs has been arrested by the Dubai police.
According to Gulf News, the man who entered the United Arab Emirates with a visit visa was arrested on Thursday, March 16, 2023, where he was begging for alms near mosques and in residential areas.
It was gathered that the beggar after his apprehension has been referred to Dubai Public Prosecution.
Dubai Police warned the public not to be fooled by beggars who deploy various tricks to seek their sympathy.
In another incident, police caught three beggars with Dh70,000, Dh46,000 and Dh44,000 in cash on them.
Police also got a call from an Asian woman who had entered the country on a one-month visit visa, saying Dh100,000 was stolen from her.
According to Gulf News, investigations revealed that the woman received this amount from begging,
Brigadier General Saeed Suhail Al Ayali, Deputy Director of the General Department of Criminal and Investigations for Administration and Control Affairs, during a press conference in Dubai Police headquarters, lamented that foreign nationals in UAE are engaging in begging to survive.
“Around 90 per cent of arrested beggars are visitors and they come during Ramadan for easy money as they know the UAE is a rich country and people here always want to help. We have a team of officers to crack down on beggars,” said Al Ayali.
Al Ayali, stressed that begging for alms is an anti-civilisational phenomenon infiltrating society and usually rises during the holy month of Ramadan.
He urged people not to be deceived by beggars as begging can lead to other crimes such as burglary and exploiting children, the elderly and people of determination to raise money illegally.
“Most beggars are fraudsters, they come during Ramadan on a visit visa and loiter around mosques. Don’t sympathise with them, instead give your help or money to charity organisations in the country,” the official said.
The public has also been warned against begging on social media. “People should be careful when they receive messages or posts on social networks regarding poor people who need help as most of it is not true or is just another scam.”
As part of an anti-begging campaign during Ramadan, the police have divided the city into different zones based on the concentration of beggars in an area.
“We have divided the city into zones, more patrols will be sent to hot zones,” he added.
Teams from Dubai Municipality, General Directorate of Residency and Foreigners Affairs (GDRFA) Dubai and Al Awqaf will help police in the crackdown against beggars SOURCE: https:///drama-as-beggar-arrested-with-cash-worth-n37-3m-81k-hidden-in-artificial-legs/

While Biden has raised many concerns on how TikTok could endanger data in the US, this is the first time under the administration that a ban has been threatened, Sky News said on Thursday.
In 2020, Donald Trump was stopped by US courts when he attempted to prohibit TikTok, which is owned by Beijing-based ByteDance.
TikTok, which has more than 100 million US users, has already been muffled by the White House after it ordered government agencies to delete the app on federal devices and systems.
Sky News reported that more than 30 states followed suit, preventing staff from using the social media platform on government-owned devices.
China denounced the US over its TikTok bans, saying it has been “abusing state power”.
Some are suggesting a nationwide ban, as Republicans and Democrats joined forces late last year to unveil bipartisan legislation that would enforce such an option.
It’s not only in the US where TikTok has come under fire – Canada announced the app posed an “unacceptable risk” and banned it from government devices, as has the European Commission, Belgium and The Netherlands.
Taiwan and Afghanistan have also enforced their own bans, with India blocking TikTok completely.
TikTok spokesperson Brooke Oberwetter confirmed the possible ban but said, “If protecting national security is the objective, divestment doesn’t solve the problem: a change in ownership would not impose any new restrictions on data flows or access.”
Meanwhile, the White House declined to comment on it. SOURCE: https:///us-government-threatens-tiktok-owners-to-sell-app-or-face-ban/
