A 50-year old truck driver, Segun Balogun has been arraigned before an Ejigbo Magistrate’s court in Lagos, southwest Nigeria, for allegedly defiling a 5-year old girl (name withheld). He allegedly raped the victim and infected her with sexually transmitted disease (STD). The defendant, who is a widower, allegedly took the victim to his house at 1, Araromi street, Ejigbo, Lagos and raped her. Balogun was charged before the presiding Magistrate, Mrs. M. B. Folami on a two-count charge of having carnal knowledge and putting his finger inside her private part. The court denied him bail and ordered him to be remanded in prison custody. The matter was prolonged because the victim’s mother was persuaded by the police at Ejigbo division to withdraw the matter until WAPA, Alausa intervened. Balogun allegedly locked the victim inside his one-room apartment laid her on his bed, and started putting his finger inside her vagina. After that, he reportedly attempted to force his penis after robbing cream inside her vagina and he injured her in the process. She started crying for some time and he allowed her to go. The girl’s mother told P.M.NEWS that she got to know that Balogun raped her daughter when the victim’s younger brother told her about it. Balogun was arraigned on Wednesday on a two-count charge of unlawful carnal knowlede and fingering contrary to the Criminal Code Laws of Lagos State of Nigeria. He pleaded not guilty. |

Lagos An Igando Customary Court in Lagos on Wednesday dissolved an 18-year-old marriage between a Muslim cleric and his wife over irreconcilable differences. The estranged husband, Lawal Temidire, 67, had on July 24 approached the court seeking the dissolution of the union over Risikat’s rejection of his sexual advances. In his ruling, the President of the court, Mr T.A. Eko, said the marriage was dissolved since all efforts to reconcile the couple had failed. “Since all efforts to resolve the couple have proved abortive, the court is left with no option than to grant the plaintiff his wish. “The marriage between Lawal Temidire and Risikat Temidire is hereby dissolved.’’ Eko ordered the plaintiff to pay N50,000 to the estranged wife to enable her to relocate to a new apartment. He urged both parties to keep the peace at all times, warning that anyone who breached the agreement would be dealt with. Earlier, the husband had told the court that quarrels and fights had always preceded every advance he made to his former wife. “We usually fight each time I want to sleep with her. She did not allow me to make love to her on many occasions. I used to force her and I am sick and tired of this. “I do not love her anymore. I want this marriage dissolved,’’ Temidire said. Risikat, 50, a business woman, who denied the claims of her husband, urged the court to grant her husband’s request for the dissolution of the marriage. The couple, who resided at No.3, Temidire St. in Egan-Ikotun, a Lagos suburb, married in 1994 and had two children. (NAN) |

THIS IS A CLEAR INDICATION THAT THE ISSUE OF CORRUPTION IS AS OLD AS THE MILITARY REGIME. FORMER Head of State and Presidential Candidate of the Congress for Progressive Change, CPC, in the 2011 general elections, Major General Muhammadu Buhari (rtd), yesterday dared former Military President, General Ibrahim Badamasi Babangida (rtd), to expose him if he had facts and insisted that IBB and other leaders played crucial roles in destroying Nigeria’s oil industry. IBB had on Monday threatened to expose Buhari’s shady deals in the oil sector when he functioned as Petroleum Minister and later chairman of the Petroleum Trust Fund, PTF, if Buhari did not shut his mouth. Countering, IBB had reportedly said: “We are conversant with General Buahri’s so-called holier-than-thou attitude. He was a one-time Minister of Petroleum and we have good records of his tenure as minister. Secondly, he presided over the Petroleum Trust Fund, PTF, which records we also have. We challenge him to come out with clean hands in those two portfolios. Those, who live in glass houses, do not throw stones. General Buhari should be properly guided.”

A 28-year-old man, Bestwood Chuckwuemeka, was arraigned on Monday at a Karu Magistrates’ Court for sodomy. The police prosecutor, Cpl. Umar Mohammed, told the court that on August 8, a man from Gidan Mangoro, Abuja, reported to the divisional headquarters, Karshi, Abuja, of the action of the accused person. Mohammed said that the accused had sexual intercourse with the complainant on his bed when the complainant was fast asleep. The prosecutor said that the offence was contrary to section 284 of the Penal Code. When the charge sheet was read out, the accused pleaded not guilty. The accused said “I came back drunk from the night club and thought I was sleeping on the same bed with my girl-friend and I started romancing her.” The Magistrate, Nafisat Buba, said that alcohol should not be seen as an excuse for committing the offence |
