Many times, I have bought tickets and collected change on the TGV trains from Lyon Part-dieu to the St. Exupery airport mainly because the connecting time is too small for me to buy tickets on the machines.

some places in usa and Canada cost almost same, new york for example is more expensive than Toronto Canada , Vancouver Canada is more expensive then texas. Manitoba/ alberta is cheaper than many places in usa. So it depends on where. If you are living alone in Toronto you will be like 2000k to 3000k a month. If you have flat mates maybe 1500 to 2k.
