I will not compare Texas to NYC in term of cost of living but I know that living in Texas is not cheap when you factor all the variables.

i cant live in indiana, Houston or mississippi due to the quality of life and aesthetics display of those states/city.

Austin texas to me is among the cheapest you could get and still live fine

i cant really say, it depends on the city since COL varies widely.

someone earning $30k before tax could SURVIVE in missisippi or florida but it will be suicidal to live in NYC or washington with such amount.
funny a thing, i was thinking of relocating to Austin

i earn $70k annually before tax
i spend around $35k annually and i live in manhattan

things also get insanely expensive in the last couple of years, finding a bedroom of $1400 monthly is like searching for a needle in an ocean

To be honest, i haven't seen that in USA and moreover the state where people carry gun mostly is Mississippi and houston where crime and drug is prevalent, though the personal space is also not particular to every state as you can't do without it in manhattan since u can't find a family home.
Also Soho has waste littered on the streets especially chinatown.

l feel this is not just particular to USA.

You may be probably wondering what I would say especially those of you living here too cos everyone is extremely free to do as he pleases but there are things peculiar to US and not in Nigeria or other countries, I will list just five (7)

1. Dont forget to tip : while no one will question you if you dont tip, it is actually considered rude if you dont tip.

2. Dont come out of your car when the cop stop you : In US, the police is trained to respond to what they feel is a threat, so its better to stay in your car when you are stopped, the cop will come meet you

3.Dont say you hate Donald Trump In US, the leaders and constitution is respected irrespective of their flaws, it will be nice as a visitor, u stay completely out of US politics.

4. Football is not soccer : American football is not thesame as soccer, the average American doesn't know who Ronaldo is, when you say football, you are referring to American football and if you know little about US football, its better not to discuss anything football.

5. Americans love their personal space its advisable not to "frolic" around someone properties, you may have the cops to deal with

6. Know who to tip you can tip a waitress but not the manager, dont tip your doctor, you could tip your personal nurse and please do not tip a policeman

7. US is an expensive country Always have more than what numbeo or epi says

I am actually a Nigerian though, I came here when I was just 4years old.

Cost of living in USA depends largely on the state and city, u can actually survive on a budget of $2,000 for one person in most part of the US like Florida etc.
But New York and Washington is extremely expensive especially Manhattan.

A family of four needs a household income of about $120-130k before tax annually to survive in Manhattan but in Austin where I stay, a household salary of 90-100k before tax could pretty much let you live for a 4peraon family.
These are the only two cities I have lived for about half a decade.

Though I have only travelled to 6 states, Mississippi seems to be the worst

Thats for people that earn minimum wage and works full time.
The average American earn $30,000 a year before tax

$550 a month for studio apartment in Austin texas.
That translates to N3.3m a year.
One bedroom is around N8m a year, we pay monthly here though

Note, studio apartment is same as self contain
