OldNairalander: Low turnout cos of police threat. To be frank as a Niger Delta man, I respect Igbo's a lot. If an Igbo man is determined to do something (whether good or bad), he is ready to sacrifice anything to do it to the highest level possible despite any attempt to stop him. This is a white man's trait that is rarely found among black Africans. Nigeria is backward because they have failed to utilize this rare trait in Igbo's. You are a great man. |

Mamaab: Good day professionals. I have a 9yr old son who I think will fare well in either computer programming, software developer, software & hardware engineer or so.
I am just a regular computer user who have zero knowledge on the aforementioned prospects. Pls, someone should tell me where to start from. I am more inclined to the software/hardware prospects
Is his age too small? Do we have specialised learning centres that I can enrol him?
Thanks in advance He should fall in love with mathematics first. Most concepts in programming are deeply rooted in mathematics. For instance, performing the binary search algorithm requires a sound knowledge of algebra and set theory. To be an excellent software engineer or Web developer, you must be a good mathematician and logician. You can get bye without being sound in mathematics but it would definitely haunt him when looking for jobs as he must pass algorithm interviews. Convince your child to fall in love with mathematics, everything else would fall into place. Get him a good software developer to teach him basic programming for 6 months probably once a week, watch his enthusiasm. |

33bandit: since they can be compared side by side ...then all im saying is an mbbs degree propels you to the top faster than any other vocation .there are no 50/50 chances inbetween ..its a sure thing I disagree. I have an unemployed MBBS holder who happens to be my cousin, if you have a job for him, I would be glad to reach out. See, an entry level software engineer earns about a thousand dollars even in Nigeria. I doubt if there are doctors that earn above 300k fresh from uni. All the same, we love our doctors |

33bandit: sequel to this thread , https://www.nairaland.com/6525528/mum-insists-medicine-nothing
....I've had a similar encounter which im inundated to share . I grew up in a loving family tbh there wasn't a case of tyranny or blackmail ,my parents just try to give you enough reasons why you should do certain things until you run out of arguments to buttress why you don't think their discisions is or was rather the right one
anyways I had passion for technical drawing during the course of secondary school ,I was one of the best students in that art form ,however my first jamb which I registered and had applied architecture was a disaster, although I could remember vividly we was in a friendly competition as to who would secure admission first coupled with the pressure of writing waec and neco
I think I discovered nairaland during that time because we scout the internet throughout the night with our illegal phones looking for who would send the waec expo ,shit was wild tbh
long story short after being shown the realities of the job market in nigeria and using alot of relatives as examples loooool ..I finally settled for medicine..im an average student ,that is to say I've to work hard befor I get good grades ...,not naturally high IQ for those who care about the neurological aspect ,thats what it is
wrote jamb 5 times and now I'm here ..did I regret studying med? ..never did, there are challenges but whatever it is ,it would be worth it .
the job market for medical sci graduate is wide and one does not have to be at the hospital everyday to have that fulfilment ,some of my seniors are now teachers in the dept . thing is medicine just propels you to a second class citizen immediately you graduate as far as ones parents would fully support them to study medicine I don't see reasons why they should refuse that offer ,shit is expensive anyway .
whatever you do in nigeria ..passion is never enough ,just do what works ,this isn't anyway deride people who have followed their passion and made it
there's always a percentage lads .
NB I didnt edit this ,time no dey! Computer science (software engineering) is a billion times better than this medicine of a thing. Why do doctors love making other disciplines look inferior? Is medicine really tougher than any Branch of engineering or mathematics? The average salary of a software engineer is a million naira monthly. A software engineer or Web developer with 5 years of experience would earn the salary of a medical consultant. Read your medicine cos you love it and not because of money. |

tensazangetsu20: Jamstack developers are scarce. That's what I work as. Before I got my present job my boss said he has been looking for someone for months it was shocking. I had an unfinished project and that was okay for him for me to work with him. Exactly my point, we have so many jobs but few good software engineers to fill them. |
Programming › Re: Programming Is just Like Playing Football by ProfAmaben(m): 6:35pm On Apr 23, 2021 |
tensazangetsu20: All andela gives is just reversing a linked list seriously. No, not all, what I meant was that a programmer should be solid in solving algorithms in order to get good jobs. There are numerous programming jobs with few good software engineers to occupy. If the young man can perform a Breadth first search or Dijkstra's shortest path algorithm, it is impossible for him not to land a $3000 job. A company recently reached out to me over a JAMstack developer position, they have been looking for someone competent for over a month. You don't have to believe me though.

Or solve Dijkstra's shortest path algorithm? If you can do this, you would easily pass an interview with Andela. Don't quit, keep at it. |
