PoliticsBuhari Is Pushing Ndigbo Hard To Leave Nigeria – Ezeife by ProfDumbledor(op): 8:37am On Jul 25, 2016
Buhari is pushing Ndigbo hard to leave Nigeria – Ezeife On July 25, 20165:28 amIn PoliticsComments Dr. Chukwuemeka Ezeife, former governor of Anambra State, in this interview, says for the unity of Nigeria not to be negotiable, there must be restructuring of the country. He also accuses President Muhammadu Buhari of pushing Ndigbo out of the country and also corrupting the constitution of Nigeria. Excerpts: By Johnbosco Agbakwuru Chukwuemeka-Ezeife IS it true that the meeting in Owerri was for Rochas Okorocha to lobby Ndigbo against clamouring for restructuring of Nigeria? I don’t know how Rochas will do that, to listen to anybody about something that will compromise the Igbo interest. In fact, the unity of Nigeria may be un-negotiable, but that is not the problem, the problem is do you want Nigeria as one or do you want the disintegration of Nigeria? If the unity of Nigeria is not negotiable, then restructuring Nigeria cannot be negotiablebecause restructuring Nigeria is the only guarantee for the unity of Nigeria. What we have now is a unity government for a diverse people. Diverse in culture, including religion and many grounds. You must respect the pluralism of Nigeria. Cultural diversity If you have six federating units, then, you guarantee the survival of Nigeria in many ways. Cultural diversity is taken care of, economic feasibility is taken care of. Right now, we have 36 states, most of which are not feasible economically. That is why we are borrowing money for salaries. Is it not a problem now; are we not borrowing money for salaries? During the 2014 conference, another 18 states were proposed and the proposal was to improve the unity of Nigeria by respecting diverse groups who want to stay together on their own but within the federal government. If 36 states are said to be unfeasible, what about adding 18 more? But with six geopolitical zones as federating units, you can even have 100 states, but they will not be called states. Any name you call them they can take, but you scale down seriously, they can be provincial government, they can be anything you call them, they may even be local governments. Do you know that in this Nigeria, there is a state where a child must score 139 points in order to qualify to enter a secondary school, while from another state, you will have nine points? Increased competition For an Anambra child to go to federal college, he or she must score 139, that is the highest. But when you go round, some states are nine points, some two. This is very diverse and it is not even helping anybody. So, if you have geopolitical zones as federating units there will be increased competition. Within the zone, there will be fair standards. There will be increased pressure to score well or you will not qualify. But once it is Nigeria, you will hear, how can you allow Igbo or the Anambra indigenes to fill the school and Sokoto will not come even if they don’t score anything? What kind of Nigeria are we running? God created Nigeria and endowed resources on her, for unmatched greatness. I don’t know what country in this our world that is more favoured than Nigeria. Here, I can step out in the open naked; I will not die. But go to Europe and step out in the snow, you will quench in a short time. Look at resources, any plant that can grow anywhere in this world can grow in Nigeria. We have mineral resources in surplus, and when we talk about minerals, it is not just coal and crude oil, we are talking about gemstones, gold, silver, aqua marine, sapphire of highest quality, etc. Then you come to human beings with expertise and knowledge, we are talking about many talents from many tribes. Over endowed, that is what Nigeria is and what have we done with it? Anybody who thinks clearly will see this point that God appears to intend Nigeria to be big brother and rallying point for all blacks on earth. We are the largest concentration of blacks on earth. Therefore, with the resources we are given, and with the way we have escaped natural disasters like earthquakes, volcano, hurricanes, etc, we are supposed to develop into a super power. The role of Nigeria is to wipe out the shame of slavery from the face of every black man. That is our manifest destiny. Apart from the unity of Ndigbo which other thing was discussed at the Owerri meeting? We discussed the problem that the South East is facing in today’s Nigeria. The problem of hatred from Mr. President. At the beginning, not everybody saw it. I saw it early enough and thinking it was a mistake and not a deliberate action, I started shouting. We have not been taken here, we have not been taken there, you have appointed 10 persons nobody from Southeast; you have appointed 20 people nobody is from Southeast, you have appointed 25, 30, 40 going further we have nobody, no soul from the Southeast. Respect and dignity So, I started knowing that it is beyond a mistake. I was thinking it was a mistake and since I believe that the person who is President must have conscience, I was raising his consciousness to the mistake so that he can correct it even the ones I tell you to write, you will find that everything I was saying is true. Instead of being taken seriously for amendment to be made, I was called enemy of the North and enemy of Buhari. So, these days, I am not talking too much again, I am talking about Nigeria. Instead of making the black man to get more respect and dignity, we are generating shame for blacks on earth. We are generating shame for the blacks for whom we are supposed to be improving their respect and dignity. Now you said Mr. President hates Ndigbo, how can the elders of Southeast organise Ndigbo to speak with one voice as it appears the people don’t speak with one voice? I am not praising Ndigbo, but they are the most united group in Nigeria. Ndigbo have been out of central political power for more than half a century, yet, they can call one another, ”come” and they come. Do you know what it means to be not even Vice President and not to talk about being president? We have not had Vice President or president for so long, yet we are still united. They called us to Owerri and we trooped there. I talk and some people understand me they didn’t say go to hell. There is no bad name they don’t give Ndigbo, they say when they hear money they will drop everything and go for the money, lie. I remember one governor somewhere in the northern part of Nigeria, who told me he had found a people more greedy for money than Ndigbo. He said these people can deal with their mother in order to get money. We are so united that if you are called a bad name, every person knows the bad name you are called and they may even be avoiding you. Our problem is not lack of unity, it is lack of opportunity. Whether the present government can implement the 2014 Conference report. It is a matter of whether the government is serious or not. That was the greatest assemblage of Nigerians of all types. From deformed people, disabled people to the latest intellects with experience to the highest level of traditional rulership. We discussed difficult things where we did not always agree but we ended up getting a consensus. Some people who are in present control, those people who were controlling Nigeria then and now, they didn’t want any change. They said to themselves, what are we going to change? Anything we change will be at our loss. But they are wrong and we proved to them that they were wrong. Eventually, they agreed with us, no group walked out because each group saw it, a long term interest is better inside one Nigeria than in a disintegrated Nigeria. No group walked out, everything was discussed and it was a matter of weighing the easier of two positions, disintegration or unity. Unmatched greatness Any group that intelligently looks at its interest in the long term, will find a united Nigeria more attractive than a disintegrated Nigeria. Unfortunately, the people who had disagreed with the restructuring and things that will make Nigeria permanent are the people who will lose most by disintegration. If you want Nigeria to be a Super Power and to develop to unmatched greatness, you want every section of Nigeria to make maximum contribution; therefore I end every letter I write to a Nigerian organisation or a Nigerian president with yours for Nigeria as a Super Power. I want Nigeria to be a Super Power; we cannot be super power if components of Nigeria are not making progress. Now we are talking about some group wanting to leave Nigeria, which group, how does Nigeria gain by Southeast of Igbo leaving? Short sighted people may say ‘we will gain the property they are leaving behind.’ How did they manage to have those property they are leaving behind? Look at Abuja, what percentage of the structures, buildings belong to Southeast people? Likewise in Kano, Kaduna, Calabar and Sokoto. One man from Awka, Anambra State, I went to visit him in Awka and I was told that he has 300 modern houses in Kaduna and I have taken some space in Awka to build civil servants houses. It happened that some part of the space belonged to him, he came to me and said ‘oga governor, you have taken my land’ and I said, ‘I am told you have 300 houses in Kaduna, what are you doing in this land in Awka, have you built anything? What I am saying is we should calculate our loses and our gains whichever decision we are taking. Culture and tradition Igbo people are not building everywhere for nothing, it is our culture and tradition. There is an Igbo adage which says, “Ebe onye bi ka ona awachi” (where you live, you mend). Essentially, where you live you build, where you live you take care of the interest of that place. So, if you push the Igbo out of Nigeria like Buhari is doing, pushing Ndigbo hard to leave Nigeria and then he turns back to say that the unity of Nigeria is not negotiable, what kind of nonsense is that? You are pushing some parts of Nigeria out of Nigeria and you are turning around to extol the unity of Nigeria. How is Buhari pushing Ndigbo out of Nigeria? All these I have been saying ‘no de make wave in your ears at all? First, he swore the oath to protect and defend the constitution, he is not defending the constitution, he is not offering any job to people from the Southeast. That is called denial, he is corrupting the constitution through the appointments he is making and the best policy Buhari is known for is anti-corruption policy. He is corrupting the policy he rolled out in many ways. One of these is unfairness in the distribution of jobs. As I am talking to you now, people sit in national security council of Nigeria, the Igbo are described as one of the third legs of the tripod in Nigeria, not one Igbo is in the national security council. You don’t kill people and expect them to be with you. The Nigerian Army massacred our people in Aba, they also massacred our people who carried the Bible to go and do memorial service in Onitsha area. Fulani herdsmen went and killed our people in Enugu. Olisa Metuh was going to court handcuffed when people who have greater charges against them, were swaggering into the court. What are you telling his people? So, please, I am no longer interested in blaming Buhari, all I am interested now is asking Nigerians from all parts of the country to pray for Buhari because he is the President. May God give him the idea to change, may God direct him to the right path of Nigeria’s developmental governance. That is my prayer and I will appeal to everybody to forget criticising Buhari. We have seen that he doesn’t absorb criticism, so why do we keep calling him names if he doesn’t recognise what you are saying. What do you think is responsible for the resurgence of militancy in the Niger Delta and the IPOB in Southeast? The IPOB you mentioned has no militancy about it, they have a legitimate case they have even taken to the United Nations. If you go to the Niger Delta, the boys are saying, this oil which God located in our area, why are we not part of it? Why is 80 percent or more oil wells given to the North? Why are you negotiating with Boko Haram hoping to get money from the Niger Delta? Even the one Yar’Adua negotiated with the people; you are not following it anymore. Why is the stock market in Nigeria losing value? Why is the Naira so down? Why is power not available in Nigeria? Why is water not available in some places? Why are there difficulties everywhere? The more you have people suffering, miserable, the more you have militancy and insecurity. Why are graduates not employed? These are contributors to militancy and insecurity. But President Buhari’s administration said it did not create it. What was the value of the Naira to dollar when Jonathan was leaving? Tell me. It was about N179. What was the total value of stock market when Jonathan was leaving, how many people were suffering inability to buy anything in the market? What was the price of fuel when Jonathan was leaving? I think people who refuse to face their problems cannot solve their problems. Jonathan, who left more than one year ago, is responsible for problems that arose. The president pronounced your country as bankrupt, what do you think other countries will say? They will run away. How many organisations have closed shop in Nigeria? What is responsible for the economic recession Nigeria is facing today? Our economic policy, our attitude to the economy generates negatives which are responsible for the misery the Nigerian people are going through today. The only one thing you can now talk about is the collapse of oil prices because it reduces revenue. Nigeria has a problem, we do not respect intellect. I proposed a solution to petroleum crisis to Obasanjo, I proposed to Yar’Adua but he was not quite alert when I was talking with him in his office. I proposed to Jonathan but the oil Mafia was so strong that if your proposal is against their interest, there is no chance of it seeing the light of the day. I made a proposal, the bottom line of it is to subsidise.

HealthNigeria Boko Haram: Children Starving, Warns UNICEF by ProfDumbledor(op): 1:44pm On Jul 19, 2016
Tens of thousands will die if treatment does not reach them soon, Unicef warns.
In areas where Boko Haram militants had been in control, it found people without water, food or sanitation.
Last month, a charity said people fleeing Boko Haram had starved to death.
The Islamist group's seven-year rebellion has left 20,000 people dead and more than two million displaced.
Nigeria's military is involved in a large-scale offensive against the group.
Unicef says that as more areas in north-eastern Nigeria become accessible to humanitarian help, the extent of the nutrition crisis affecting children is becoming more apparent.
It said that of the 244,000 children found to be suffering from severe acute malnutrition in Borno, almost one in five would die if they were not reached with treatment.
"Some 134 children on average will die every day from causes linked to acute malnutrition if the response is not scaled up quickly," said Manuel Fontaine, Unicef's Regional Director for Western and Central Africa.
"We need all partners and donors to step forward to prevent any more children from dying. No-one can take on a crisis of this scale alone."

Mr Fontaine said he had seen destroyed towns accommodating displaced people and thousands of frail children in desperate need of help.
"There are two million people we are still not able to reach in Borno state, which means that the true scope of this crisis has yet to be revealed to the world," he added.
"There are organisations on the ground doing great work, but none of us are able to work at the scale and quality that we need. We must all scale up."
MSF said in June that a "catastrophic humanitarian emergency" was unfolding at one camp in Bama, Borno state, where 24,000 people had taken refuge.
Many inhabitants were traumatised and one in five children was suffering from acute malnutrition, it said.

Boko Haram at a glance:
Founded in 2002, initially focused on opposing Western-style education - Boko Haram means "Western education is forbidden" in the Hausa language
Launched military operations in 2009
Thousands killed, mostly in north-eastern Nigeria, and hundreds abducted, including at least 200 schoolgirls
Joined so-called Islamic State, now calls itself IS's "West African province"
Seized large area in north-east, where it declared caliphate
Regional force has now retaken most territory

In our series of letters from African journalists, novelist and writer Adaobi Tricia Nwaubani looks at the spate of resignations in the UK after the vote to leave the European Union and asks whether there are any lessons for Africa.

1: There is a time to sit tight and a time to let go of power

After failing to convince the British people of the need to Remain in the European Union, Prime Minister David Cameron knew that his time was up. He felt he was not the right person to lead the country.

Without waiting for street protests or endless appeals from the United Nations, Mr Cameron announced his resignation, giving way to someone better equipped to manage the new situation that Britain found itself in.

Africans can now appreciate that there is no need for melodramatic performances when it comes to leaving office and importantly, not unusual for a leader to step down before his term ends.

It is even possible to go out on a jaunty note, as Mr Cameron did, whistling to the tune of D'Banj's Olorun Maje.

2: In times of crisis, unite and act speedily

Immediately after Britain voted to leave the EU, the country's political establishment was thrown into chaos.

The uncertainty in the currency markets led to the pound falling to a 30-year low. And confidence in doing business in the UK seemed to be ebbing.

The UK's unity was in jeopardy, with the possibility of Scotland pulling out of the union.

But the country did not accuse the international media of presenting an exaggerated impression to the world of how bad things were.

They did not sit back and watch their country fall completely apart, before they took action.

As quickly as possible, the ruling Conservative party did away with the prospect of a prolonged leadership battle, recognising that collective energy was better expended on tackling the looming crisis head on.

Experts who had warned of turmoil if the Leave campaign won rehashed their predictions but they started offering solutions on how the UK would cope with life outside the EU.

The Chancellor of the Exchequer who had campaigned for the Remain side quickly changed gear and declared that Britain was "open for business".

Theresa May has not ordered that Larry be thrown out on suspicion of being a witch in cat form sent by political enemies to spy on her or pull her down.

And as soon as Theresa May took over, she announced her cabinet without much ado, everyone expected to begin work immediately.

No time for lengthy, and televised, courtesy calls from her villagers and church members and the market women association and the traditional rulers and her old girls association and her husband's villagers - all of them wanting her to know, via hours-long speeches, that they support her and wish her well.

3: Nothing wrong with occupying the official residence immediately your predecessor vacates

As far as we know, Mrs May spent her first night in office at Number 10 Downing Street, the official residence of the British Prime Minister, never mind that she may have stayed awake all night drawing up her cabinet list.

How many African leaders would dare do such a thing? Occupy a residence just vacated by a predecessor without first inviting native doctors or shamans or pastors to sanctify the place and cleanse it of any spiritual booby traps, while commanding the witches and wizards lurking in the woodwork to either return to sender or fall down and die.

And Larry the cat is being allowed to stay. The stray feline has lived in Downing Street since 2010, playing the role of chief mouse chaser.

Image caption Larry could have been called a witch

Mrs May has not ordered that Larry be thrown out on suspicion of being a witch in cat form sent by political enemies to spy on her or pull her down.

You need only watch a random selection of Nollywood films, which are immensely popular all over Africa, to understand that a stray cat in this part of the world is never just a stray cat.

Not to talk of a stray cat inherited from a political predecessor.

The UK is not in any way a perfect place.

The country itself can learn a few things from the diverse ways of the African people.

But, when it comes to the matter of Mr Cameron's handover to Mrs May, we would do well to sit at the feet of Britain and learn.

Health13 Healthy Habits For A Longer Live by ProfDumbledor(op): 11:30am On Jul 15, 2016
Protect Your DNA
As you age, the ends of your chromosomes -- called telomeres -- become shorter. This makes you more likely to get sick. But lifestyle changes can boost an enzyme that increases their length. Plus, studies show diet and exercise can protect them. The bottom line: Healthy habits may slow aging at the cellular level.
Play to Win
An 80-year study found that people who are conscientious -- meaning they pay attention to detail, think things through, and try to do what's right -- live longer. They do more things to protect their health and make choices that lead to stronger relationships and better careers.
Make Friends
Here's one more reason to be grateful for your friends -- they might help you live longer. Australian researchers found elderly social butterflies were less likely to die over a 10-year period compared to people with the fewest friends. A look at results from 148 more studies shows a clear link between social ties and a long life.
Choose Friends Wisely
Your friends’ habits rub off on you, so look for buddies with healthy lifestyles. Your chances of becoming obese go up if you have a friend who adds extra pounds. Smoking also spreads through social ties, but the good news is that quitting is also contagious.
Quit Smoking
It's no secret that giving up cigarettes can lengthen your days, but the amount of extra time may surprise you. A 50-year British study shows that quitting at age 30 could increase your lifespan by an entire decade. Kicking the habit at age 40, 50, or 60 can add 9, 6, or 3 years to your life, respectively.
Embrace the Siesta
A siesta is standard in many parts of the world, and now there's scientific evidence that napping may help you live longer. A study that involved 24,000 people suggests those who have a regular snooze are 37% less likely to die from heart disease than those who rarely steal a few winks. Researchers think naps might help your heart by keeping stress hormones down.
Follow a Mediterranean Diet
The Mediterranean diet is rich in fruits, vegetables, whole grains, olive oil, and fish. An analysis of 50 studies involving more than half a million people confirms the benefits. It can put a serious dent in your risk of metabolic syndrome -- a mix of obesity, high blood sugar, increased blood pressure, and other factors that make you more likely to get heart disease and diabetes

Eat Like an Okinawan
The people of Okinawa, Japan, once lived longer than any other group on Earth. The region's traditional diet, which is high in green and yellow vegetables, and low in calories gets the credit. Plus, some Okinawans made a habit of eating only 80% of the food on their plate. Younger generations have dropped the old ways and aren't living as long as their ancestors
Lose Weight
If you're overweight, slimming down can protect against diabetes, heart disease, and other conditions that take years off your life. Belly fat is bad for you, so focus on deflating that spare tire. A 5-year study of Hispanics and African-Americans suggests eating more fiber and exercising regularly are great ways to whittle your middle
Keep Moving
The evidence is clear -- people who exercise live longer on average than those who don't. Dozens of studies show that regular physical activity lowers your risk of heart disease, stroke, diabetes, some forms of cancer, and depression. It may even help you stay mentally sharp in into old age. Ten-minute spurts are fine, as long as they add up to about 2.5 hours of moderate exercise per week.
Drink in Moderation
Heart disease is less common in moderate drinkers than in people who don't drink at all. On the other hand, too much alcohol pads the belly, boosts blood pressure, and can cause a host of other health problems. If you drink alcohol, the limit should be one drink a day for women and one or two for men. But if you don't drink, don't start. There are better ways to protect your heart!
Get Spiritual
People who attend religious services tend to live longer than those who don't. In a 12-year study of people over age 65, those who went more than once a week had higher levels of a key immune system protein than their peers who didn't. The strong social network that develops among people who worship together may contribute to your overall heath
Forgive
Letting go of grudges has surprising physical health benefits. Chronic anger is linked to decreased lung function, heart disease, stroke, and other ailments. Forgiveness will reduce anxiety, lower blood pressure, and help you breathe more easily. These benefits tend to increase as you get older.

HIDDEN AND FRAUDULENT FOREX POLICY BY GODWIN EMEFIELE AND IBE KACHIKWU
The CBN Governor and Minister of State of Petroleum Resources and Group Managing Director, Nigerian National Petroleum Corporation have decided to sabotage the effort of the FGN on the recently implemented Flexible FOREX policy by instructing the IOCs (International Oil Companies) to sell dollars to specific companies and individuals through an appointed bank using a centralized exchange rate system to be advised by CBN and NNPC each time the IOCs are selling. This act is an effort to rubbish Flexible FOREX policy as the major contributors of FOREX are the IOCs. The implications of this fraudulent act by NNPC and CBN in enriching themselves are as follows:-
• There will be serious scarcity of FOREX in the interbank that should be readily available for the genuine users as Emefiele and Kachikwu are selling to their cronies.
• Naira will continue to fall against the dollar in the interbank market as the major contributors (IOCs) are not selling to the market but directly to Emefiele’s and Kachikwu’s allies through the bank.
• The cost of Importation of major items will continue to skyrocket as dollars are not available to the genuine sector.
• The cronies and allies of Emefiele and Kachikwu will continue to buy cheap dollars thereby enriching themselves
• NNPC is using it regulatory power to intimidate and suppress the IOCs to succumb to their fraudulent request.
• Another fuel scarcity is looming as dollar will not be available for petroleum importers.
• What the President is trying to achieve is being sabotage by Emefiele and Kachikwu, by bedeviling the interest of Nigeria and enriching their pockets.
We call on the President Mohammadu Buhari to restrain Emefiele and Kachikwu in carrying out this fraudulent act for the betterment of Nigerians.

HealthStop That Stress Now Before It Gets Out Of Control by ProfDumbledor(op): 2:15pm On Jun 20, 2016
A certain amount of stress is important for life to have meaning. Stress is necessary for us to have happy, productive lives. Without some stress, we become easily bored and lack direction. This is often the problem of the newly retired people. The key is to function with a level of stress that is life enhancing- not life threatening.

It is not the single stressful event that harms people, but the long term stress built up at an increasingly higher, uninterrupted level.

According to the America Medical Association, "80% of our diseases are either caused or aggravated by stress". These diseases range from minor ailments (e.g., aches and pains) to life-threatening diseases ( e.g., strokes, heart attacks, ulcers and cancer). Stress can even weaken one's immune system.

Here are some practical principles to help you cope with stress:

Stop and answer some blunt questions like:

* Are you getting enough sleep?

* Is your diet adequate and balanced?

* Are you taking time to relax

* Are you neglecting your family?

* Are you keeping in contacts with close friends?

* Are you simply trying to do too much?

Very often most problems can be solved with us having just a few early nights! Take time to clearly analyze the physical and social areas of your life.

HealthWhy You Need To Eat 'egusi' (white-melon) Soup by ProfDumbledor(op): 5:09pm On Jun 13, 2016
Cucumeropsis mannii is a species of melon native to tropical Africa west of the East African Rift where it is grown for food and as a source of oil.

Usage

Egusi soup is a kind of soup thickened with the ground seeds and popular in West Africa, with considerable local variation. Besides the seeds, water, and oil, egusi soup typically contains leaf vegetables, other vegetables, seasonings, and meat. Typical leaf vegetables for egusi soup include bitter leaf, celosia and spinach. Typical other vegetables include tomatoes and okra. Typical seasonings include chili peppers, onions, and locust beans. Typical meats include beef, goat, fish, shrimp, or crayfish.

In Nigeria, egusi is very popular among the Igbo people of southeastern Nigeria, the Ibibio people and the Efik people (Calabar people) of Southern Nigeria, the Hausa of northern Nigeria and the Yoruba people, Edo people, Esan people, and Etsako people of the southwest of Nigeria. Yoruba people in general and quite notably the people of Osun state– especially the Ijesha people – eat ‘Iyan and Egusi’, a pounded yam and egusi soup.

Nutritional information

The kernel of the egusi seed is 44% oil, 30% protein, 10% carbohydrate, 4% ash and 3% fiber. The oil of this seed is 64.9% linoleic acid, 12.4% oleic acid, 11.8% stearic acid and 10.9% palmitic acid. Vitamins Thiamin, Niacin, B1 and B2 are also prevalent in the seed, as well as many micronutrients. Notable minerals include phosphorus, as the largest mineral component, with potassium, magnesium, manganese, sulfur, calcium, iron and zinc to follow. The bulk of carbohydrates are starch and soluble sugars. Egusi is the perfect complement to the largely starch-rich grain diet of Africa, providing a high-protein and high-energy concentrate. The seed contains every important macro and micro-nutrient in quantities ideal for nutrition. The amino acid content of egusi proteins makes it a sufficient vegetable protein. This composition is ideal for sick and growing bodies, providing essential amino acids and calories. Just 100 g of seed daily provides essential fatty acid, amino acid and Vitamin E requirements. There is potential for these seeds as a critical tool for interventions in diseases such as marasmus and kwashiorkor.

Health Benefits

78 % of the fat is unsaturated fatty acid, which is protective to the heart.
The alpha-tocopherol found in egusi is a component of vitamin E that helps in maintaining smooth young skin and good fertility.
It also contains palmitic, stearic, linoleic and oleic acids important in protecting the heart.
The egusi can also be an important supplementary baby food, helping prevent malnutrition.
Blending the seeds with water and honey produces a milky liquid that can be used as formula if breast milk is unavailable.

There is a need for more widespread knowledge on Cucumeropsis mannii in order to re-popularize the crop and spread its many benefits

HealthTips For Improving Your Diet – Nutrition Advice To Eat Healthier by ProfDumbledor(op): 3:59pm On Jun 08, 2016
As diets contain more refined and processed foods, disease increases and we begin to see more obesity, diabetes, high blood pressure, heart disease and even cancer. Eating a nutrient deficient diet causes other problems like fatigue, allergies, depression, chronic pain, skin problems and many other problems that affect the quality of our lives.

But the simple truth is to avoid problems in the future as it is easier to stay well than to get well. You can help the process by paying attention to your diet. The goal of any dietary approach is to balance the body’s chemistry.
Basic Diet
Invest some time and effort to improve your diet and reap the reward of good health and excellent energy. Following these eight tips is a great place to start!

1. Drink plenty of water each day: Water to keep your cells hydrated and protected, to eliminate waste and ensure the health of your mucus membranes. Adequate hydration will improve a number of health problems including sinusitis, constipation, inflammation, allergies, fatigue, joint pain, headaches and many other afflictions. Drink more water and less soda, coffee, tea or juice.
Your body cannot adequately eliminate waste products without enough water. If toxic chemicals or heavy metal poisoning is at the root of your health problems you will have a much easier time getting better when you are properly hydrated.

2. Eat plenty of vegetables: Plenty means that at least ½ to ¾ of the food you eat (by volume). Vegetables are very high in fiber, vitamin C, folic acid and minerals. They provide you with many health benefits, such as the following:

*Fiber in vegetables slows the absorption of fat and toxins. One of the best ways to lose weight is to eat plenty of fiber. Eating adequate fiber can help normalize cholesterol levels and blood pressure.
*Vegetables nourish normal flora, which in turn nourish the lining of the GI tract, produce vitamins and inhibit yeast and other undesirable organisms.
*Vegetables speed up bowel transit time, which reduces bowel toxicity and prevents irritation of the GI lining.
*Vegetables contain folic acid, which is necessary to produce serotonin (preventing depression and overeating), increases energy and helps reduce the chances for a heart attack.
*The minerals in vegetables help prevent osteoporosis. (Other nutrients besides calcium are important for healthy bone.) Minerals are also important enzyme co-factors, so most major functions of the body are dependent on minerals.
*Eating vegetables can reduce the instance of cancer and heart disease, increase your energy and mental clarity, reduce the problems caused by bowel and liver toxicity, and help reduce the symptoms of allergies, asthma, arthritis, skin problems, digestive problems, sinusitis, chronic pain and many other health problems.
* Eating vegetables helps to alkalize the diet.

Corn and potatoes don’t count as vegetables. Fruit is also good for you; it is a good source of vitamin C and fiber. Eating vegetables is stressed here because when people are told to eat more fruits and vegetables, they tend to increase fruit intake but not vegetable intake.

3. Avoid deep fried food, Trans fats, partially hydrogenated oil and hydrogenated oil: As time passes, we keep finding more bad things about hydrogenated oil and fried foods. Hydrogenation is the food industry’s way of turning liquid oils into solid fats. This gives packaged foods a longer shelf life than if they were made with natural oils. Hydrogenation produces trans fats, which have been linked to a number of health problems such as the following:

Cancer: Women with higher levels of Trans fats in their cells are much more likely to develop breast cancer than women with low levels of Trans fats.
Pain and inflammation become much worse for patients who consume hydrogenated oils. They chemically prevent the formation of natural anti-inflammatory substances that are normally produced by the body. If you suffer from chronic pain or have recently been injured, strictly avoid hydrogenated oil.
Heart disease: High levels of Trans fats create platelet aggregation, which is the beginning of the plaque associated with coronary heart disease. Lately a lot has been written linking inflammation with heart disease.
Trans fats are incorporated into the cells and make them less resistant to chemicals, bacteria and viruses. This could be a source of immune system problems.
There may be a link between Trans fats and ADD, depression and fatigue. Brain and nerve tissue have a high content of fat. Some researchers believe that when Trans fats are incorporated into the nerve cells they affect function, creating problems like ADD and depression.

Muscle fatigue and skin problems are also linked to hydrogenated oils. Most chips and fried snacks contain hydrogenated oils. Hydrogenated oils are found in a lot of packaged foods like crackers, cereals and even bread. They are often found in margarine mayonnaise; and a lot of bottled salad dressings. Read labels.
Not all fats are bad for you. Permissible fats include raw nuts (not roasted), virgin or extra virgin olive oil and avocados.

4. Avoid refined sugar: Refined sugar increases insulin and adrenal hormone production and can cause the following health problems.

Increased production of adrenal hormones causes the body to excrete essential minerals.
Sugar consumption increases the body’s need for vitamins B and C.
Eating a lot of sugar aggravates many of the problems we associate with emotional stress.
Sugar stresses the adrenal glands.
Sugar feeds yeast and other one-celled organisms found in the bowel, causing them to multiply. These organisms produce toxins, irritate the lining of the GI tract and take the place of normal, more beneficial flora, thus removing the benefits of helpful bacteria.
Eating sugar causes blood sugar swings. Blood sugar increases immediately after consuming sugar, prompting the body to produce insulin. Excess insulin creates more sugar cravings.
Eating sugar creates insulin insensitivity. More sugar is eaten, more insulin produced, etc. This stresses the pancreas and sets the stage for adult-onset diabetes.
There is a connection between sugar consumption and high cholesterol. Patients with Syndrome X (high cholesterol, high LDL, low HDL and high triglycerides) often have the problem because of consumption of sugar and refined carbohydrates.
Sugar consumption can make pain and inflammation worse.
Sugar can cause or aggravate allergies, sinusitis, asthma, irritable bowel, Candidiasis, migraine headaches, fatigue, depression and even heart disease.

5. Avoid refined carbohydrates: Refined carbohydrates are grains that have had the fiber, vitamin E, B vitamins, bran and germ removed. In other words, the nutrients have been removed and you are left with the starch. They create all of the same health problems created by refined sugar.
Refined carbohydrates fill you up-but not with vitamins and minerals. This stresses your digestive system and your endocrine system. Eating refined carbohydrates uses up precious vitamins and minerals.
Often people eat refined carbohydrates because they are low in fat and mistakenly think that because they are “complex carbohydrates” that they are actually good for you.
Refined carbohydrates include white bread, white rice, and pasta that are not labeled whole grain. Read the labels on bread. Brown-colored bread labeled wheat bread isn’t usually whole wheat. If the label says enriched, white flour on it you’re not getting a whole grain. Use brown rice instead of white rice.

6. Avoid chemical additives: Avoid processed foods and chemicals. This has had a devastating effect on our health. Stay away from packaged foods with chemical additives.

7. Eat slowly, chew your food thoroughly: Ideally, chew your food until it is liquid. You will be satisfied with less food and you will have better digestion. Your saliva has enzymes that facilitate digestion. Also, it is easier to digest small particles than large ones. Not chewing well stresses your digestive system and can lead to poor absorption of nutrients, digestive problems like gas and bloating and promote the growth of harmful bacteria in the digestive tract.

8. Never skip meals: Skipping meals stresses your adrenal glands. If you are trying to lose weight, not eating is a poor strategy because your metabolism will slow down to accommodate the reduction in calories. As a result you become fatigued and will ultimately gain weight.

PoliticsIPOB To IGP: Hide Your Face In Shame For Ordering Disarmament Of Unarmed Biafran by ProfDumbledor(op): 10:30am On Jun 02, 2016
By Nwabueze Okonkwo

ONITSHA – The Directorate of Indigenous People of Biafra, IPOB, yesterday stated that the retiring Inspector-General of Police, IGP, Solomon Arase should hide his face in shame for ordering the disarming of Biafrans, shortly after the massacre of IPOB members during their May 30 remembrance day ceremony in various parts of South East zone. In a press statement issued by its spokespersons, Dr. clifford Iroanya and Emma Nmezu, IPOB said by such an order, Arase is complicating and deepening his indictment, conviction, and sentencing at the International Criminal Court, ICC in the Hague because every one knows that from day one, IPOB members are not armed. According the statement titled: “The retiring & tired IGP Solomon Arase and his unfounded allegations against IPOB“, IPOB declared: “Mr. Solomon Ehigiator Arase, you are aware of the menace of Boko Haram, the serial killings of Biafrans by Buhari’s killer squad known as Fulani Herdsmen, and the extra-judicial killings of Biafrans by Nigerian security outfits, yet you have failed to issue a single press statement on them. But you shamefully issued tissues of lies which you called press statement even after your policemen and Nigerian soldiers killed unarmed Biafrans some of them in their sleep inside a church as they prepare to remember their fallen heroes and some of these fallen heroes were similarly killed by Buhari in 1968 at Owerri”. “Mr. Arase, as you retire on June 21, 2016, be it known to you that you will have no rest until you get to your final destination which is ICC prison in the Hague. You can tell all the lies in the world and try to manufacture evidence for your colleagues in the DSS so that they can use it against the leader of IPOB, Nnamdi Kanu who is currently standing trial in court but the incontrovertible fact is that nobody can stop the restoration of the nation of Biafra. The restoration of the nation of Biafra is an ideology and no human being born of a woman has ever defeated or exterminated an ideology”. “For those of you who participate in the wanton killing of Biafrans, thr statement continued, there shall be consequences and the boundary of these consequences are limitless and can include members of your family both immediate and extended because no one takes a Biafran life and gets away scot-free”. IPOB contended that by that order, Arase was probably trying to make the job easier for Buhari’s Department of State Services, DSS who have been hopelessly looking for the “smokine gun“ with which they will convince the trial Judge, Hon John Tsoho, that IPOB is a violent organization so that the Judge will uphold charge No. 2 in the case against the leader of IPOB, Mazi Nnamdi Kanu, but he forgot that he can deceive the people for some time but not all the time”. The statement asked rhetorically: “How many of Buhari’s Fulani Herdsmen who massacred men, women, and children in Biafraland have the police arrested? So, are you always blind to the fact that the so-called Fulani herdsmen are moving freely with AK-47 assault rifles? Why are you not arresting them or are they a special breed of Nigerians who are above the law? Why are you turning around this case of murder against your policemen to make it look like it was the unarmed Biafrans that were doing the killings? Are you making this press statement to cover your tracks and that of Col. Issah Abdullahi”? “It will interest Mr. Solomon Arase to know that the Head of Directorate of State of IPOB discussed the upcoming May 30th Heroes‘ Remembrance Day with the Commissioner of Police (CP) in Anambra, Hosea Karma, and then followed it up with a letter which is attached to this press release. It is a shame that Solomon Arase is displaying crass incompetence and ignorance by lying through his teeth with concoctions that IPOB members were armed and that they attacked Nigerian policemen and killed two of them in Asaba, delta state on May 30”. “Perhaps he would have saved himself this embarrassment by conducting thorough investigation and checking with the CP in Anambra state. Now the entire world has seen through his lies and he is complicating and deepening his indictment, conviction, and sentencing at the ICC with these latest lies from the pit of hell”.

Death toll rises after pro-Biafra protests

Emeka Ojukwu led the attempt to create a separate state in the south-east

At least 10 pro-Biafra supporters were killed during protests on Monday as they marked the anniversary of the 1967 declaration of their breakaway republic, according to Nigerian police, AFP news agency reports.

A police spokesman in Anambra state told AFP that five bodies had been recovered in Onitsha town, adding to the five already confirmed dead from the violence in Asaba (see earlier entry), which lies just across the other side of the River Niger.

Two police officers were also killed in Asaba.

Police say that protesters from the Indigenous People of Biafra (IPOB) movement opened fire on them first, forcing them to retaliate.

IPOB denies this and says that least 35 members of the group were killed in Onitsha alone on Monday.

Our Facebook readers have rallied to the defence of Biafra protesters after Nigeria's police chief accused them of carrying out "premeditated attacks" and vowed to disarm them (see our earlier posts).

Here is a sample of views, starting with those of Agbo Anayochukwu:

Biafrans are peaceful people, but Nigeria's security agents have been infringing on our rights as indigenous people. They have killed Biafrans in cold blood. No matter the intimidation, Biafra must be achieved."

Deadly Biafra protests

At least seven people were killed on Monday in the eastern Nigerian city of Asaba during clashes between pro-Biafra secessionists and security forces, the Associated Press news agency reports.

Five civilians and two police officers were killed when violence broke out at a demonstration calling for Biafran independence, according to police in Delta state.

More than a million people died in the civil war between 1967-1970, in which the army fought to prevent the east of the country breaking away to form the independent state of Biafra.

Members of the Movement for the Sovereign State of Biafra (MASSOB) told media that the death toll was higher than that given by police.

The Indigenous People of Biafra (IPOB), the other main secessionist group, also held demonstrations on Monday (30 May), the date of Biafra' declaration of independence in 1967.

There is currently a resurgence of support for the campaign to create the breakaway state.

Obinna Onyekwere adds:

These men were unarmed. They only gathered in churches and schools to remember and pray for the souls of their departed heroes. Why will Nigerians always go for soft targets? They are only encouraging these men to arm themselves next time."

Gerald Onyekachi Ugwuanyi is also critical of the police response:

These guys are not armed. They are peaceful protesters. The Nigerian government is just trying to justify their crimes against this group by painting them black. By the way, the BBC never reported the protests."

PoliticsShould New Calls For Biafra Worry Nigerians?- BBC by ProfDumbledor(op): 4:04pm On May 31, 2016
Letter from Africa: Should new calls for Biafra worry Nigerians?

30 November 2015
From the section Africa

In our series of letters from African journalists, Mannir Dan Ali looks at the resurgence of a secessionist movement that supports the creation of a breakaway state of Biafra in Nigeria.

The last few weeks have seen thousands of young people trooping to the streets of southern Nigeria to protest about the continued detention of a leading Biafra activist, Nnamdi Kanu.

Both new and old media are full of views and reports on the renewed agitation for the short-lived Biafran republic.

If it is not the report of the latest city to host the noisy protest by the mainly ethnic Igbo young men under the banner of the Indigenous Peoples of Biafra (IPOB), it may be some hot exchanges on social media about the different interpretation of the event.

The Nigerian military's warning of dire consequences for anyone who tries to carry out what they refer to as treasonable acts, has also been getting attention.

Many Nigerians, with the deadly Boko Haram insurgency in their minds, are trying to understand what is going on, asking why now and what does it all mean?

The latest protests were triggered by the detention of Mr Kanu, the UK-based leader of the IPOB.

He came to Nigeria last month and was arrested by the authorities, accused of treason.

Security sources say he was arrested for broadcasting hate speech both on the internet and through a banned London-based radio station called Radio Biafra, which he has been using to promote his call for the creation of a Biafran nation.

He has already appeared in court but is still under detention as his trial is yet to get off the ground.

He led his mainly ethnic Igbos into a deadly three-year civil war that ended in 1970
More than one million people lost their lives, mostly because of hunger
Decades after Biafra uprising was quelled by the military, secessionist groups have attracted the support of many young people
They feel Nigeria's central government is not investing in the region
But the government says their complaints are not particular to the south-east

Still dreaming of Biafra

One of the most viewed items recently by people trying to understand what is going on is a video uploaded to YouTube showing Mr Kanu soliciting arms at a meeting of the World Igbo Congress in the US city of Los Angeles in September.

He said to his audience:

"We need guns and bullets from you people in America...

"In 1967, before the war started, there was a blood moon... and there is blood moon this year because we are going to be free - no matter what happens."

Now with raucous protesters calling for Mr Kanu's release, the security services are getting even more concerned.

A military chief said: "The Nigerian army would like to send an unequivocal warning to all and sundry, more specifically to all those threatening and agitating for the dismemberment of the country, committing treasonable felony and arson as well as wanton destruction of lives and property."

"Most educated middle-class Igbos and other Nigerians who are hoping that common sense will prevail"

It is not only the security services who are concerned about the resurgence of sentiment for Biafra.

Many Nigerians cannot understand its logic because, as one commentator put it: The Igbo community, more than any other in Nigeria, has settled and is doing business in all parts of the country.
'Misunderstanding history'

Even at the conference where Mr Kanu made his incendiary call for arms, there were sceptics who pointed to recent events in South Sudan to show why secession may not be the answer to problems of disaffection and neglect.

A columnist with the Vanguard newspaper, who has made a career out of defending Igbo causes, Ochereome Nnanna, said in a recent article: "I see the agitators as people who do not understand the history of the defunct Biafra.

"I see them as people who misapprehend the Biafra they are asking for... Kanu and his multitude of blind followers must be told that they are playing into the hands of their enemies and dragging millions of other unwilling Igbos along."

This appears to be the position of most educated middle-class Igbos and other Nigerians who are hoping that common sense will prevail.

Community leaders in the Niger Delta where protests have also been taking place, have already disassociated themselves from the agitation, warning the protesters to stay clear of the oil-producing region.
Image caption Most political leaders in the region have distanced themselves from the protesters

Within Igboland, state governors met for the second time last weekend to agree a common approach to the matter.

But their effort was hampered by the refusal of some members of the pan-Igbo group Ohanaeze Ndigbo to attend the meeting.

However, they did set up a committee of elders to meet the Nigerian President Muhammadu Buhari on the issue.

They said they would ask the federal government to find ways of addressing the region's lack of infrastructure and development.

Mr Buhari, a former military ruler who fought in the civil war, will be watching the Igbo leaders' response to the issue with concern.

He has less than a month to go to meet his own deadline to end the Boko Haram Islamist insurgency that has devastated the north-east.

Many would argue that that conflict was not born out of religion, but by those disaffected by lack of opportunities and unemployment - precisely the issues that commentators believe are driving the young pro-Biafra protesters.

Members of the Igbo establishment now face the tricky task of trying to rein in the youthful protesters, none of whom experienced the trauma of the original Biafra, but who are so convinced that it represents their best hope of a better future.

HealthHow To Determine Your Body Mass Index (BMI) And Its Implication by ProfDumbledor(op): 4:13pm On May 24, 2016
BMI is used to estimate a person’s body fat based on their height and weight. Everyone needs some body fat, but having too much body fat can put a person at risk for health problems such as high blood pressure and diabetes. Having too little body fat is also unhealthy.

How is BMI measured?
BMI is a mathematical calculation of your weight (in Kg) divided by the square of your height (in metres). You can figure out your BMI on your own using this formula: BMI = Weight (in Kg) divided by square of your Height (in metres).
For example, if you weigh 80Kg and are 1.7m (170cm) tall, your BMI = 27.7
In this example, BMI = 80Kg divided by 1.7 x1.7 = 80 divided by2.89 = 27.7

What does my BMI mean?
Your health care provider can tell you if your BMI falls into the underweight, normal weight, overweight or obese category. You can also figure out the outcome yourself using the information below;

BMI: Category:

less than 18.5 Underweight

between 18.5 and 24.9 Normal Weight

between 25 and 29.9 Overweight

greater than or equals 30 Obese

No matter what your BMI is, it’s important to ask if it has changed over the last couple of years. If your BMI changes a lot either up or down, you should talk to your health care provider about possible reasons for the change.

However, you need to note here that BMI is not a tool to determine ideal body weight. It is a tool to help you see whether your weight is increasing your risk for disease

What if my BMI is high?
Talk to your health care provider about whether you should be concerned about your BMI and about healthy ways to manage your weight. Keep in mind that BMI is just an estimate of body fat. Most adult who have a BMI in the overweight or obese category have a high amount of body fat, but there are some who don’t. This is true for muscular adults (especially those who exercise or are very athletic and toned). Their weight may be higher because of extra “muscle mass” and not because of extra body fat.
If your BMI falls in the underweight, overweight, or obese category, you should see your health care provider. He/she can check to see if you are at risk for getting any serious health problems and help you work on a healthy weight management plan, if needed.

HealthCauses And Prevention Of Smelly Vagina by ProfDumbledor(op):
Vaginal odor may limit sexual activity in a relationship; the woman feels uncomfortable, and the man becomes a little distant. However, the vagina has a distinct smell that is not a problem. Each girl has a particular vaginal smell; it is natural. Even when you notice a recent difference in its smell, it is not necessarily an infection. That change may be linked to a specific moment of your menstrual cycle because the smell of your vagina can vary depending on the time of the cycle.

A healthy vagina gives off a discrete odor at one time or another.
It is normal that it has a certain odor sometimes. Whether this natural smell is neutral or not, it is a matter of personal judgment. In fact, some women notice their odor when there is no notable odor detected by their partners.
However, if the odor changes and becomes strongly unpleasant (repugnant fishy vaginal odor), this change deserves attention because it is perhaps a sign of a serious vaginal infection. Left untreated, this condition may cause not only physiologic problems but also emotional (stress) and social problems (the person feels uncomfortable thinking the odor is detected by others).

What to do when you have vaginal odor?
Many women believe that vaginal odor are the result of a lack of personal hygiene and wash excessively their vagina unaware that they worsen the problem. While poor genital hygiene can be the cause, excessive washing is not the solution. Very often, women hampered by a strong vaginal odor should not begin to wash themselves intensively. That does not help at all. The first thing to do should be restoring the acidity and the balance of the vaginal flora naturally. That restoration cannot be done by excessive antibiotic intake; it decreases your immune system.

How to restore the balance of the vaginal flora?
The vaginal flora consists of a large number of microaerophilic bacteria. Among them, lactobacilli are considered the principal ones for their role in protecting the vagina. These micro-organisms are primarily responsible for protective acidity of the vagina. Wash the vagina too often increases its pH, which disrupts the vaginal flora and can cause vaginal infections and particularly unpleasant odors. That is, do not rush to wash your vaginal excessively when you suffer from vaginal health issues. Simply use soap and water to clean the outside of your vaginal area. Rinse well and pat your skin with a towel until it is dry before you put your underwear on.
If the vaginal flora is disrupted, pathogenic bacteria proliferate, resulting in bacterial vaginosis. This type of proliferation tends to increase the number of bacteria normally present in the vagina causing unpleasant fishy vaginal odor.

What are the causes of vaginal odor?
Besides excessive washing, douching, tight clothes and certain chemicals (scented body washes, antibacterial soap, etc) can cause vaginal infection or yeast infections. Certain contraceptives and foreign body in vagina can provoke vaginal odor and other major health issues. Vaginal and anal intercourse alternation during the same session can cause vaginal infection resulting in vaginal odor. Though rare, diet can affect the smell of your vagina. In some cases of vaginal odor, eating a healthy diet (eating fruit and vegetables abundantly) can remediate the condition without any medical treatment

Useful tips
Wear clean tampons and change them regularly. Avoid Douching, it is not necessary; it can damage or destroy the normal acidity of the vagina resulting in vaginal problems. If you suffer from this type of vaginal infection, it is recommended to avoid wearing tight underwear and pants so that the vagina can breathe easier. Tight clothes can irritate the vagina and cause or increase vaginal odor. Wearing cotton panties is also important. If a vaginal infection persists despite treatment, you need to see a doctor because it could be a sign of Cancer of the cervix or vagina, Bacterial Vaginosis, Chlamydia, Genital herpes, Gonorrhea, Pelvic Inflammatory Disease, Sexually Transmitted Diseases (STDs), Vaginitis, Yeast infections, etc.
For women, after intercourse, it is important to go urinate. Urination after sex helps to remove any possible bacteria that may be outside or inside the vaginal canal that would go up in the urethra. Because once present, these microbes tend to go up into the bladder, and can cause recurrent urinary infections. Urination causes a cleansing effect, forcing the microbes outside.

Is there a natural treatment for vaginal odor?
Yes, there are herbal remedies formulated to be total feminine products. Not only are they designed to attack the root causes of your current bacterial vaginosis but also their recurrence. Naturally, they balance the flora of your vagina. The ingredients in these remedies can assist in the re-establishment of the natural lactobacilli in your vagina and significantly boost your immune system to fight your existing condition and its recurrence.

HealthPregnancy Symptoms You Should Never Ignore by ProfDumbledor(op): 4:50pm On May 23, 2016
Even if you've read lots about pregnancy and spoken to other mums about your pregnancy symptoms, there will still be times when you wonder if what you're feeling is normal or not.

The following pregnancy symptoms should set off a few alarm bells. If you experience them you should call your midwife, doctor or your maternity unit straight away.

I have a pain in my middle
Severe or sharp pain in your middle or upper tummy, with or without nausea or vomiting could mean one of several things. You could have severe indigestion, heart burn a stomach bug, or it could be food poisoning.
If you're in the second half of your pregnancy this pain could indicate pre-eclampsia (, a serious condition that requires immediate attention.

I have a pain in my lower belly
Severe pain on either side or both sides of your lower belly needs investigating to be sure it's nothing serious. You could have pulled or stretched a ligament, which is common in pregnancy.

Less commonly, it may be a sign of:

• an ectopic pregnancy- a pregnancy in which the fetus develops outside the womb, typically in a fallopian tube.
• miscarriage
• premature labour
• a fibroid breaking down and bleeding into itself
• placental abruption, when the placenta separates from the lining of your womb (uterus)
I have a fever
If you have a fever and your temperature is above 37.5 degrees C, but with no flu or cold symptoms, call your doctor the same day.

If your temperature is more than 39 degrees C, call your doctor straight away. You probably have an infection. Your doctor may prescribe antibiotics and rest. If your temperature rises higher than 39 degrees C for a long time it may be harmful to your baby.
My vision is blurred and I see flashing spots
Call your doctor or midwife if, in the second half of your pregnancy, your eyesight is affected by:

• double vision
• blurring
• dimming
• flashing spots or lights before your eyes

These visual disturbances may be a sign of pre-eclampsia

My hands and feet are swollen
Swelling or puffiness (oedema) in your hands, face and eyes is common in late pregnancy. In most cases it’s not a cause for concern. But if your swelling is severe or comes on suddenly, along with a headache or problems with your vision, you may have pre-eclampsia. If you notice any of these symptoms, call your doctor or midwife straight away.

I have a severe headache that won't go away
If a bad headache lasts for more than two hours or three hours, and you have visual disturbances and severe swelling in your body, you may have pre-eclampsia. If pre-eclampsia occurs, it is usually in the second half of your pregnancy or soon after your baby is delivered.

I have vaginal bleeding
Spotting or very light bleeding without pain is common in early pregnancy. It may be breakthrough bleeding, which happens when the hormones that drive your menstrual cycle continue strongly enough to cause light bleeding. Try not to worry if this happens, as it usually resolves itself and is unlikely to harm your baby.
Even so, call your doctor or midwife if you bleed at any stage during your pregnancy. It may indicate a serious complication if it is:

• Bleeding that's different from your normal period, so lighter in flow or darker in colour than usual. This, with severe, persistent, one-sided pain in your tummy, may be a sign of an ectopic pregnancy
• Heavy bleeding, combined with persistent back pain or abdominal pain. This may be a sign of miscarriage
• Sudden, painless bleeding. This may happen if you have a low-lying placenta (placenta praevia) (, which will have been seen at your 20-week scan.
• Fresh or dark bleeding with or without clots in later pregnancy could mean you have placental abruption (. This is when the placenta starts to separate from the wall of your womb. Depending on the position and extent of the separation, it can cause either a small amount of bleeding or a gush, as well as pain and tenderness Heavy bleeding may mean you're going into premature labour, if you’re less than 37 weeks pregnant

In the later stages of pregnancy heavy bleeding is uncommon.
I'm leaking fluid from my vagina
If you are leaking fluid from your vagina before 37 weeks it may mean that your waters have been broken early. Contact your maternity unit so that a doctor or midwife can check on your baby's health. You may need treatment if there are signs of an infection.
Once your waters have broken, your baby has less protection against infection. Or you could already have an infection that has made your waters break. You may need to prepare for a premature birth. You'll have a specialist team on hand in the hospital to make sure you and your baby get the right care.

When your waters break after 37 weeks, you’re likely to go into labour within the next day or. Call your midwife or maternity unit to tell them what's happened. You'll probably be asked to go to hospital to be checked over, and to discuss what's best to do if your labour doesn't start within 24 hours
I'm suddenly really thirsty
If you're suddenly thirsty, and your wee is dark yellow, it could be a sign of dehydration. You need to drink more fluid when you're pregnant. If you're thirsty and weeing a lot more than usual it could be a sign of gestational diabetes although this often doesn't cause symptoms.

Gestational diabetes can increase the risk of complications for you and your baby so tell your doctor or midwife.
I feel a burning sensation when I wee
You may have a urinary tract infection (UTI) if you:

• feel a painful or burning sensation when weeing
• have a frequent urge to wee, even if you've only just been, and may be wetting yourself when you get the urge
• pass cloudy, bloody or smelly wee
• have nausea, tiredness and cold sweats
• have a pain in your lower abdomen, or feel achy all over

If you have any of these symptoms, see your doctor, as she can give you antibiotics to treat your UTI.
I'm constantly vomiting
Vomiting more than a couple of times a day could dehydrate and weaken you, although it's unlikely to hurt your baby. You need to speak to your midwife or GP about severe and persistent vomiting (hyperemesis gravidarum), especially if you cannot tolerate any food or drink. You may need treatment, possibly in hospital.

If you're vomiting during the second half of your pregnancy, you may also have severe pain just below the ribs, and sudden severe swelling in your face, hands or feet. These symptoms may be a sign of pre-eclampsia Vomiting accompanied by diarrhoea could be a sign of food poisoning or a tummy bug. If you're vomiting, feverish and have pain in your side, lower back or around your genitals, it could mean you have a kidney infection. If you have these symptoms you should contact your doctor.
I feel faint and dizzy
Fainting or feeling light-headed may be a sign that you haven't eaten enough that day. But it could also mean that you have low blood pressure, which is common in early pregnancy. That's because the pregnancy hormone progesterone relaxes the walls of your blood vessels.

Many women feel dizzy during pregnancy. But if you faint, see your doctor afterwards to make sure all is well.
My baby's movements have slowed down
If your baby's movements stop or slow down after 24 weeks it may mean he's in distresss. If you have noticed that your baby is moving about less than usual, contact your midwife or hospital, and if you're over 28 weeks do this immediately. Read more about your baby’s movement including when to seek help.

I itch all over
If you have severe itching all over, particularly at night, you may have obstetric cholestasis. OC is a condition of the liver. You may develop jaundice with OC, which can make your wee dark and your poo paler than usual.

If you have mild itching try not to worry too much. Some itching is normal as your skin stretches to accommodate your growing baby. However, it's best to have intense itching checked out. This is especially the case if the itching is worse at night and centers on the soles of your feet and the palms of your hands.
I fell and hit my belly
Falls or blows aren't always dangerous but call your doctor or midwife on the same day and explain what happened. If you slipped on the stairs and bruised your tailbone, you probably don't need to worry. Your baby is well cushioned by your womb and amniotic fluid. However, blows to your abdomen are more likely to result in complications, as are injuries to your bones, tendons or ligaments.
If you notice contractions, leaking fluid, or any bleeding, call your doctor or midwife right away, or go to your nearest accident and emergency department (A&E).

I just don't feel right
If you're not sure about a symptom, don't feel like yourself, or simply feel uneasy, trust your instincts and call your doctor or midwife. If there's a problem, you'll get help right away. If nothing's wrong, you'll go home reassured.

Your doctor or midwife expects to get calls like these, and will be happy to give you advice. Your body is changing so rapidly that it's sometimes difficult to know if what you're experiencing is normal, or if it's something to worry about.

HealthBasic Things You Should Know About Infant Pneumonia As A Mother by ProfDumbledor(op): 4:19pm On May 17, 2016
What is pneumonia?
Pneumonia is an infection of the lungs caused by any one of several viruses and bacteria. The lungs become inflamed and filled with fluid, causing a cough and making it harder to breathe.

How will I know if my baby has pneumonia?
Pneumonia can develop suddenly in a day or two, or more slowly over several days. Sometimes it’s difficult to know if it’s just a bad cold. A cough is often one of the first signs. Take your baby to a doctor if:

• she has a bad cough and is coughing up mucus
• she seems generally unwell
• she has lost her appetite

Some babies may develop a more serious case of pneumonia that may need treatment in hospital. Take your baby to accident and emergency (A&E) if:

• she has a worsening cough, which may bring up yellow, brown or blood-stained mucus
• she has a fever
• she has had less than half of her usual amount of fluids over the past 24 hours
• she is wheezing (a coarse, whistling sound as she breathes)
• she is breathing in a rapid and shallow way, with the skin between her ribs, above her collarbone, or below her rib cage sucking in with each breath
• she has blue lips and fingernails
How is pneumonia diagnosed?
The doctor will listen to your baby’s lungs with a stethoscope to check for fluid and any crackling sounds. He will also check your baby’s heart rate and breathing, and ask you about any other symptoms.

Your doctor may suggest your baby has a chest X-ray in hospital if she seems particularly unwell. This will show how much her lungs have been affected. Your baby may also have a blood test or a mucus test to find out whether her pneumonia is viral or bacterial.
How is pneumonia treated?
If your doctor thinks your baby’s pneumonia is mild, then she can be treated at home. Bacterial pneumonia can be treated with antibiotics. Viral pneumonia will go away on its own as your baby’s immune system fights the virus.

Without going to hospital for tests, it’s difficult to know which kind of pneumonia your baby has. For a mild case of pneumonia, your doctor may give your baby antibiotics to be on the safe side. You can also try other treatments to help ease your baby’s discomfort:
• Make sure your baby gets plenty of rest.
• Give your baby infant paracetamol or infant ibuprofen to bring down her fever. Your baby can have paracetamol from two months if she was born after 37 weeks and weighs more than 4kg (9lb). She can have ibuprofen if she is three months or older and weighs at least 5kg (11Ib) Check the dosage information on the packet, or ask your doctor or pharmacist if you’re unsure about how much to give your baby.
• Your baby can easily become dehydrated if her congested airways and cough are making it hard for her to drink. Encourage your baby to take extra breast or bottle feeds. She can have water too if she is formula-fed or on solids

Don’t give your baby any over-the-counter cough and cold medicines. They should not be given to children under six, because of the risk of side-effects.

If your baby’s pneumonia is more severe, or if she develops sepsis, she's likely to need treatment in hospital. Sepsis happens when the body starts to attack its own tissues and organs in response to an infection.

A severe case of pneumonia can either come on quickly, or can develop more slowly over a few days. So keep an eye on your baby for signs that she is getting worse. She may need to go to hospital if she’s having trouble feeding or breathing.

Hospital treatment will make sure your baby is getting enough fluids and enough oxygen. Your baby may be given antibiotics through a drip. She may also need fluids through a drip if she is very dehydrated. If she’s having trouble breathing and the level of oxygen in her blood is low, she may be given extra oxygen through a face mask.

What can I do to prevent my baby from getting pneumonia in the future?
To boost your baby’s chances of staying healthy and reduce her chances of getting pneumonia:

• Make sure your baby has her vaccinations. The pneumococcal vaccine (PCV) protects against some causes of pneumonia, meningitis and septicaemia (blood poisoning). Also the Hib, diphtheria, and whooping cough vaccines are all important in preventing diseases that can lead to pneumonia (BTS 2002).
• Practise good personal hygiene. Cover your mouth and nose when you cough, and wash your hands and your baby’s hands often to prevent the spread of germs.
• Create a smoke-free environment. If you or your partner smokes, try to stop. Babies who live around cigarette smoke become ill more often and are more susceptible to illnesses such as pneumonia, colds, asthma, ear infections. This is one reason why it's now illegal to smoke in a car with a baby or child present.

Health10 Most Dangerous Condom Mistakes People Make by ProfDumbledor(op): 12:48pm On May 16, 2016
It's not enough to just use condoms. You have to use them correctly! But as many as three out of four people don't.
That's because a lot of us have a love-hate relationship with condoms. The most common complaints? You guessed them: They reduce sensation, they're difficult to put on, and, ewww, that smell. But they sure are handy to have around when you're suddenly turned on. And, unquestionably, condoms can go a long way toward preventing both pregnancy and a huge share of the 19 million annual cases of STDs (sexually transmitted diseases), from AIDS to herpes, with a lot of very unpleasant stops in between.
So please make sure you're not making any of the top 10 most dangerous condom mistakes:

1.Not checking for visible damage. Nearly 75% of people never bother looking for tears or holes -- even if they use their teeth to open the packet (don't!) or snag the condom on their jewelry or fingernails, according to a Kinsey Institute report.

2.Not checking the expiration date. Yes, that little date printed on the wrapper is news to 61% of users. Not you, of course! Just don't confuse the expiration date (EXP) with the manufacture date (MFG). Condoms last a lot longer than even Twinkies -- up to 5 years for plain ones, though only 2 years or so for those with a spermicide, which gradually breaks down the latex. But condoms kept in men's wallets get toasty from body heat, which can considerably shorten a condom's life expectancy (and maybe yours). If a condom is sticky or brittle, toss it.

3.Not discussing condom use beforehand. Yes, 60% of people say it doesn't work out well when a partner springs condoms on them at the last minute. The more both partners discuss (and even practice) using condoms, the better things will go when the big moment comes.

4.Putting it on late in the action. About 43% of students in a sex-behavior study donned the condom after penetration had already occurred. Presumably they didn't know that some sperm can be released before the final fireworks, posing pregnancy and STD risks.

5.Not leaving room at the top. It's apparently news to four out of 10 condom users that before putting it on, you need to gently squeeze the tip of the condom to remove any trapped air and leave space for the sperm. Otherwise, the condom's more likely to break.

6.Putting it on wrong. Don't you hate when that happens? About 30% of people put it on inside out and don't realize that an inside-out condom is more likely to slip off (go peek at number 8 on this list). The safest thing to do? Start with a new one. The right way: The condom should look a little like a ski cap with the bottom edges rolled up (not under). The cap should fit over the penis so that the brim unrolls easily down the shaft. Any other way and it's a dunce cap.

7.Breaking the condom. About 29% of users report breakage. A large chunk of that is user error, not product defects, say researchers. In addition to the mistakes in numbers 1, 2, 5, and 6, add this: using oil-based lubricants (like petroleum jelly, face and body creams, and baby oil or mineral oil). These can make the latex pop. Instead, use kinder, gentler water-based or silicone lubricants (think glycerin or K-Y Jelly).

8.Slipping off during sex. The 13% who report slippage have many reasons, including, "It just didn't fit right." To find a good fit, buy a variety of styles and sizes (there really aren't that many choices) and try them at leisure. Remember, natural lambskin sounds nice and can prevent pregnancy, but it doesn't protect against the viruses that cause AIDS, hepatitis, and herpes. Only latex can do that.

9.Taking the condom off too soon. Duh, not a good idea. For the 15% of men who report doing this, losing an erection is a big reason. But erections can come and go during sex; besides, ejaculation can occur without an erection, bringing with it all the risks of pregnancy and STDs.

10.The biggest mistake of all: NOT using a condom. Don't let all these potential problems turn you off to condoms or simply make you say, "Why bother?" Take a breath, get it right, and save your (sex) life.

HealthOnly About 45 Percent Of Nigerians Are Aware Of Their HIV Status-ahf by ProfDumbledor(op): 4:42pm On May 13, 2016
The AIDS Health Care Foundation (AHF) says only about 45 percent of Nigerians are aware of their HIV status.

The AIDS Health Care Foundation (AHF) says only about 45 percent of Nigerians are aware of their HIV status. A statement issued on Friday in Abuja by AHF Senior Manager, Communication, Miss Kemi Gbadamosi, also claimed that Nigeria has the second highest burden of HIV, after South Africa. It quoted Dr Adetayo Towolawi, the Country Programme Manager of AHF Nigeria, as saying that 45 percent was quite low judging by Nigeria’s population size. Towolawi further said that 3.4 million people were living with the virus in the country. He said achieving an AIDS-free generation was possible if more people knew their status and those found positive placed on treatment.
As part of AHF’s contribution to Nigeria’s HIV/AIDS response, he said his organisation had flagged off a testing campaign aimed at reaching 15,000 Nigerians with free HIV test. Towolawi said the campaign would be held in partnership with state and local government authorities with the target of realising the UNAIDS/AHF global goals on HIV/AIDS. “ The HIV testing campaign is part of the organisation’s robust prevention activities for the year and a strategic tool in ensuring that more Nigerians know their HIV status. “ As part of AHF Nigeria’s testing scale up plan, the testing campaign will target Abuja, Anambra, Benue, Cross River, Kogi and Nasarawa States. “In addition to HIV testing, individuals will also have an opportunity to check their blood pressure, receive health and wellness talks among other services. “ In the country, relevant stakeholders and partners are scaling up testing uptake and AHF Nigeria is taking measures to consolidate these efforts and champion community-driven testing outreaches,’’ Towolawi stated.
The statement also quoted Elizabeth Duile, the Prevention Programme Manager of AHF, as saying that the foundation was committed to ensuring the availability of HIV testing services in the country. Duile said the campaign would provide a platform to educate individuals and communities. “Ending AIDS starts with a commitment to act and everyone has a responsibility in stopping the spread of the virus. “ People are often reluctant to test for fear of the result and stigma; today there are mechanisms in place to check stigma and discrimination. “This will ensure that people living with HIV have access to treatment, care and support,’’ she said.
The News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) reports that AIDS Healthcare Foundation is the largest non-profit HIV/AIDS organisation in the world and provides health care to more than 600,000 patients in 36 countries. AHF Nigeria has been operating in the country since 2011 and has presence in six states.
