Exerpt from Horus's Posting of « #777 on: May 05, 2007, 01:25 AM » on this Forum Humans are prone to herd mentality. Often, people confirm with the actions and directions of other people. This is a common mistake in investing. An example of this is during the early 90s when dozens of dot com companies sld their stocks in the stock market. It created an artificial demand for stocks of companies that did not even provide real and concrete services. These stocks soared in value as more and more enthusiastic investors bought them. This happened up until the time it was realized that these companies did not actually post any considerable profit to sustain the value of the shares. The stocks then tumbled and virtually lost value as investors frantically sold their shares. This tendency to panic and depend on the direction of others is among the real causes of problems with the stock market. There are two actions arising from this mentality: a.) panic buying - b.) panic selling Of the two, panic selling causes the most harm since it causes a steep and quick drop in the value of shares. The best way to avoid causing these problems is to practice due diligence and to keep a level head while investing. Source: http://gold-finance..com/2007/05/common-mistake-in-investing.html#links Exerpt from Wanajo's post of « #8135 on: December 17, 2007, 08:26 AM » on this forum No one really wants to lose money. Your risk appetite will be evident in your strategy which will govern the stocks you invest in. That's why Buffet will not invest in the dot com shares even with all the technical analysis pointing at an upward movement of the prices. As you grow your portfolio, you will start to be defensive. Simply because staying where you are is far better than going down. However, for some, he that is down needs fear no fall. So individual situation will affect your strategy. These are words of advise from the elders. When you look at history you are better armed for today. This message is not to the experienced investors. They know the basics and can even take funny risks when protected by diversification and correct risk ratios. It is to the young investors that see so much gain in the FUNDAMENTALESS penny stocks. Someone here said maybe it's a dot com, well maybe!!!. The current situation is likely to play out like what happened with the wonder banks. But it's not likely to affect fundamentally sound stocks. Please be wise, don't be caught off guard. |
Quoting Yoyidokun (alias queen) ---------------------- Indeed there is a lot of corruption in the NSE, but some of us will still maintain our integrity and still make money along the way. <<<<TRUNCATED>>>> So for now, we will trade on the floor and be satisfied with our 50% yearly portfolio increase. ----------------------------- @Yoyidokun, Na today I no se you be Royalty. Your conclusion is very sound and deep. For the Purpose of emphasis. The secret for Naija is the same for anywhere in the universe , Godliness with contentment is great gain. INTEGRITY, CONTENTMENT (Powerful keys to greatness & increase without heart attack!!!). Quoting aktopgun ------------------------------------- on the issue of the market maker, if only it was a market maker it would be understandable. in naija's case, its just some big homies cornering the market u know! holding other investors to ransom. the SEC comes out and try to give palliative treatment otherwise known as medicine after death. lets hope these dry bones can live again ---------------------------------------- ALL, after witnessing several sample events in Nigeria, I think people should understand the system. You must act as soon as there are warning signs. Just look at how CBN handled the Wonder bank senario. About six month b/for the elections I had warned others with Nospetco deposits that I would be out before the elections and that anything could happen. I did not have insider info (na God dey save person wey he wan save).I knew that I must be out. Even the person that I was able to convince to liquidate some at the timeof the election was too late. As I said na God save me oh. I had withdrawn all my deposit long before the election. As soon as I heard about frozen-defrozen NOSPETCO account I started warning people, but to my surprise, they were saying that nothing will happen. When tangible warning signals were coming out from CBN!!! (Nigerians sha, ). They even started fresh investments in wonder banks that were inferior to Nospetco. I said but these investment-firms have no history of delivery. They said that is even the advantage, that it's the first set that will definitely be paid off even if others are not. Unfortunately people lost out again. I refused to invest in any of these ones. Everyone needs to read the early warning signs. FUNDAMENTA-LESS Penny stock are too risky and shouldn't be a substantial part of a sound portfollio. Why would I buy a company that is not functioning and there is no sight, not even a rumour of a turnaround investor. Is it wise? This is the principle. If you invest 500K in a fundamentaless Penny stock when you see the DOJI and you make 2Mil. You are likely to invest that 2Mil in another like that because it will become a habilt. Unless you fully understand the laws of diversification(very few are able to maintain the discipline). I personally was considering doing penny stocks (FUNDAMENTAL or FUNDAMENTALESS) this year, but I backed out of the idea after reading up several warnings from Meristem and others. See there's great potential in the insurance, banking and construction sectors. Even the food and beverage is looking good. I still have a preference for penny stock with good fundamentals. All said, many have gotten away with it. Fine, but don't forget that many cycle-out of the wonder banks, but many more were hurt, including those that were paid off initally. I heard of a person who cycled-out of a wonder bank with a large sum for a small deposit. They said she kept the money, sold of her car and land and added it to this money. She then reinvested it in the same wonder bank. When it was time to cycle-out na so so tory she dey hear, let me end that one there. listen to the early warning signs (overstatement, insider trading, etc, time will say more). SEC has spoken, who will not hear!!!. This is my little contribution to a thread I have gained a lot from. |
Congrats, Let's know the kind of Qualities (Certs, etc) that impresses Telkom. |
compaqB:If you're engineering inclined, then CCNA is good for you. Networking is enginneering. But if you prefer PC/server support you could do MCSE. The cheap training schools are in Ikeja (IMT-Ikeja and NHAMES-Adeniyi Jones). That should be close enough. compaqB:Consider Oracle Database or MicrosoftSQL. But have you exploited professionalism in Biz Admin. PMI's Project management may be a good one. |
EMMAACHILE, Thanks for the PHB investors file. It's cool. Pls can you give me a link to the site I can register for this one. |
abelin78, I entered at Nascon N16.4. because I observed it had some kind of support at N17.50 . It would be better to get it at a price close to it's support. The time to buy a stock iss when the price is low and you are convince it has good prospects. |
abelin78, Why not divide the money in two/three parts and buy 1. Your preffered share 2. A bank with good prospects low forward P.E.(after P.O. dillution) and 3. maybe a construction stock with good P.E. If you were experience I would have suggested you pick insurance stock. Though the amount may not too be much you should imbibe diversification as a culture. It gives you the power be free from evils of any sector or particular stock like staying_on_supportlevel_for_ages/netoffer/T.S./ReturnMoney/fullsuspension etc. Infact with excellent diversification you can take profits even when the bears are around. Lastly if you are taking Nascon, it's a good stock but you better set a good price limit to gurantee good returns and early opportunity to exit. |

shigidi:I support all the guru's on the uba prediction. Also look at this http://www.nigeriansecurities.com/shownews3.php?url=http://www.businessdayonline.com/economic-watch/3927.html?print Excerpt from the story: "The Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN) has given the strongest indication yet of its desire to favourably consider a stand alone indigenous bank to manage Nigeria’s huge and rising foreign exchange reserves, estimated to be more than $54-billion as at the end of January. If this happens it would mean a major shift in policy by the apex bank, , An indigenous bank looking to be considered under this arrangement will have to extend its balance sheet size, but more so its international business reach, which is a criterion Soludo emphasised in a short statement to the launch of UBA Capital (Europe) at Wellington Arch in London. Indeed, the fresh concession to manage the country’s foreign exchange reserves is being anchored on the back of new efforts by the apex bank to reward local banks that are genuinely expanding beyond the borders of Nigeria, particularly into Europe and America. A possible first beneficiary is likely to be United Bank for Africa, the self-styled Africa’s global bank, which expansive branch network and the commencement of its subsidiary, UBA Capital (Europe), appear to have provided grounds for the possible policy shift the CBN is now considering. Soludo said the growth and international foray already recorded by UBA made it impossible to ignore offering such a Nigerian bank the opportunity to manage some of Nigeria’s foreign reserves. " |

teena, The latest financial report for the company on that link is 2001. It can't be used to get the forecast EPS. |
Thanks, but the EPS and PE posted on NSE site are Trailing EPS or PE. Because of the fast growth rate in the insurance industry what we need to determine a comfortable value for LASACO's is the Forcast EPS not the trailing EPS or PE. It can also be calculated from a recent audited or unaudited quaterly result. Do you have any of these? They are not on NSE site. |
Dis Guy , you're not too late for Mutual Benefit Assurance. It's dropping now so you can book it with your broker to buy when it falls to 4.5 ( if it falls that low). With a forecast EPS of 35k based on the latest result released it should go further up. Another good one is NEM. let NEM drop to 5 before buying it. Titilayo, I see you recommend LASACO. Do you have the Forecast EPS for LASACO? I would like to know it. |
