The Sun Nigeria George Onyejiuwa, Owerri There was pandemonium in the oil rich Mgbala Agwa community in Oguta council area of Imo State last week when armed soldiers allegedly acting at the behest of an oil services stormed the community shooting sporadically into the air. This is just as the member representing Oguta state constituency in the State Assembly, Hon. Frank Ugborma described the action of both the oil company and the army as irresponsible behaviour. The action of the armed soldiers who came in 15 Hilux vans and led by one Captain Bala caused panic, sending the people who were already holding a peaceful protest against the maltreatment being meted on them by the oil company scampering for safety. In the process many of the people, especially elderly women and men, sustained varying degrees of injuries. The soldiers did not stop at that as they chased after the people lashing them with horse whips. The traditional ruler of the community, Eze Blaise Uba, who lamented about the situation said that since the oil services started operations in the community 16 years ago the community has not benefitted anything except intimidation. According to him, “Last week the trucks of this oil company had knocked down an indigene Mrs Sabina Opara and crushed one of her legs. Angered by this, the youths of community blocked them and demanded that the company should come and settle with them over non-implementation of the MoU signed with them. But instead of them to come, they sent the army who invaded the community shooting sporadically for over three hours.” Chairman of Mgbala Agwa Town Union, Emeka Egbulugha said that since the oil services started operation in the community that nobody has been employed by the company and that even the MoU signed between it and the company has never been implemented. Member representing Oguta state constituency, Hon. Frank Ugborma who condemned the action of the oil company said that he will take up the matter by informing the leadership of the Assembly at the resumption of plenary. First Person to Receive Coronavirus Trial Vaccine has finally Spoken The injection, applied to the left shoulder, lasted only a few seconds. But with it came the hopes of a world locked in a battle with coronavirus and no small amount of personal risk. Jennifer Haller, a 44-year-old mother of two, did not flinch in the corner of the Seattle laboratory as the man in a face mask and blue gloves made the injection. She had made up her mind long before the morning in March on which she became the first person in any country to receive a possible vaccine for Covid-19, according to US researchers. Weeks earlier Ms Haller, an operations manager at a tech start-up, had spotted a call-out for participants in the historic trial on Facebook. She decided to opt-in. “Even at that time we were all feeling so helpless,” she told The Telegraph from her self-isolation in Washington state. “There was nothing I could do to stop this global pandemic. Then I saw this opportunity come up and thought: ‘Well, maybe there is something I can do to contribute.’” Looking on as things once taken for granted – freedom of movement, the right to work – began to disappear under the shadow of Covid-19, the trial offered something tangible. “It gave me some sense of control,” Ms Haller said. “We’re all so out of control and helpless. This just gave me something that I could hold on to that could be helpful.” The final yes was not instantaneous, however. As she went through the medical checks needed to get approved for the trial, concerns were raised by her friends and family. Her husband wondered whether it really was safe. The couple had allowed their son to take part in a few medical studies while an infant, but this was different. The trial, run by Kaiser Permanente Washington Health Research Institute in Seattle, would involve two doses of an experimental vaccine being given 28 days apart, then a year of monitoring. The vaccine, named mRNA-1273, had been tested on animals and showed promise. This was the first time it would be used on a human. The trial would not actually involve injecting any part of Covid-19 itself, a point Ms. Haller used to reassure her concerned loved ones. But that did not guarantee a smooth ride. The 45 pages of disclaimers given beforehand spelled out the uncertainties, not least that participants could be more vulnerable to catching coronavirus afterward. She signed anyway. “There was a tonne of risks involved. But I’m a real positive person and the benefits of this far outweighed any risks in my mind,” she said. It is hard to over-exaggerate just how much is riding on this trial, and scores of similar ones now taking place Readers can also get more details here: https://www.telegraph.co.uk/news/2020/04/13/proud-help-first-person-world-trial-coronavirus-vaccine-describes/

The lifeless body of the deceased was recovered by the roadside in the Idi Isin area of the town by police personnel on Tuesday. While residents of the area were confused about how the corpse got to the point where it was recovered, sources said the police arrested one Najeem Adejumo, who works in a private hospital in the area, where the late Yetunde was believed to have procured the abortion. The deceased, also known as Iya Farida, was described by sources in the Are Ago compound, where she resided, as easygoing; leaving many of the residents to wonder what could have led her to procure abortion. When contacted, the Police Public Relations Officer in the state, Yemisi Opalola, said police personnel recovered the corpse by the roadside on Tuesday. Opalola stated that the command had arrested a suspect in connection with the crime, adding that the man had made useful confession. She said the state Commissioner of Police, Johnson Kokumo, had ordered thorough investigation into the incident, with an assurance that the suspect would be arraigned at the conclusion of investigation. Opalola stated, “Around 6.30am, the police recovered a lifeless body that was later identified as that of Yetunde, who was said to be living in the Are Ago compound, Idi Isin, Ikirun. “Investigation by the police later revealed that the deceased had visited a private hospital in Ikirun to procure an illegal abortion, which must have resulted in complications that led to her death. “The suspected quack, one Najeem Adejumo, was arrested and upon interrogation, he confessed that the deceased died during the procedure and that he dumped her corpse at the spot where the police recovered it.” Source: |

Mgbala Agwa community in Oguta Local Government Area of Imo state has been thrown into tension following a clash between the military and the youths of the area. The Sun Nigeria Geoffrey Anyanwu, Enugu, Jeff Amechi Agbodo, Onitsha, Aloysius Attah, Onitsha, Eziomume Solomon, Nnewi Archbishop of the Enugu Province and Bishop of Enugu Anglican Diocese, Most Rev. Emmanuel Chukwuma, yesterday, said the Province will not shut any of its branches over Coronavirus pandemic. Chukwuma who faulted the order of government for churches and places of worship not to open, said it was unfortunate and wrong to categorise church and worship centres with drinking palours, night clubs, markets and companies. The cleric said he would not shut the churches because he is not the owner, as the church belongs to Jesus Christ, adding that if people were stopped from “running to their God in worship in a time like now the whole world was confusion, where would they run to for safety, help and deliverance?” He said shutting the church in a trying time like the one faced by the country would mean giving the devil opportunity to ravage the people and the country. Warning that attacking the church will not bring solution but worsen what we were faced with already, Chukwuma advised that there was need for the country to continue to seek divine solution to the challenge of COVID-19. The Archbishop, who was reacting to the disruption of worship of some Anglican churches in Enugu, warned security operatives to stop forcing members of the Anglican Church from worshipping in their church buildings, insisting that he had ensured that all hygienic protocols and social distancing practices were kept for the good of the people. “I have told them (Police) not to try it again unless they want more trouble for themselves and their families. There is no way you can ask the church of God to stop when we need prayers to bring healing upon the land, especially when we are faced with a problem as serious as coronavirus that has defied every human solution. “It is wrong on the government to send police after worshippers. I think if they are serious, what they should do is to ensure that the hygiene protocol is kept, that the social distancing order is also kept, while encouraging those at the altar to pray the country out (of the pandemic). What can man do under this circumstance without God? What can even the President or our scientists do in this trying time without God? It is wrong for people to think that we will not find answers to what has befallen us through prayers. So, I want to warn that whoever is behind the disruption should stop in his own interest. “The last thing I will do at this time is to close the doors of my church building. In my Cathedral, we worshipped today and we will observe all the Palm Sunday and Easter activities. I will worship on Monaday, Thursday as well as the Easter Sunday. It will be sad on anybody who tried to stop us because. We’re doing what we are supposed to do. Source: https://www.sunnewsonline.com/bishop-chukwuma-dares-govt-holds-church-service/amp/ |

Enugu Electricity Distribution Company (EEDC) has attributed current loss of supply being experienced in parts of its network to the heavy rain/windstorm which occurred Tuesday evening and early Wednesday. The Head, Corporate Communications, EEDC, Mr Emeka Ezeh, disclosed this in a statement made available to newsmen on Wednesday in Enugu. Ezeh said that the company expressed that the situation led to loss of several High Tension (HT) and Low Tension (LT) poles, aluminum conductors and other line accessories, resulted to power outage on most of its 33KV and 11KV feeders. As a result of this, some of our feeders are out on fault, and this has led to loss of electricity supply to our customers in the affected areas,’’ he said. We appeal for understanding of our customers; while we assess the situation, work at addressing them and restoring power supply to the affected customers. “We regret the inconvenience this situation has caused our esteemed customers and assure them that supply will be gradually restored as repairs are completed,’’ Ezeh assured. Full speech of Predient Buhari on COVID-19 pandemic thenationonlineng.net Mar 29, 2020 7:19 PM Buhari on Coronavirus Pandemic Fellow Nigerians, From the first signs that Coronavirus, or COVID-19 was turning into an epidemic and was officially declared a world-wide emergency, the Federal Government started planning preventive, containment and curative measures in the event the disease hits Nigeria. The whole instruments of government are now mobilized to confront what has now become both a health emergency and an economic crisis. Nigeria, unfortunately, confirmed its first case on 27th February 2020. Since then, we have seen the number of confirmed cases rise slowly. By the morning of March 29th, 2020, the total confirmed cases within Nigeria had risen to ninety-seven. Regrettably, we also had our first fatality, a former employee of PPMC, who died on 23rd March 2020. Our thoughts and prayers are with his family in this very difficult time. We also pray for quick recovery for those infected and undergoing treatment. As of today, COVID-19 has no cure. Scientists around the world are working very hard to develop a vaccine. We are in touch with these institutions as they work towards a solution that will be certified by international and local medical authorities within the shortest possible time. For now, the best and most efficient way to avoid getting infected is through regular hygienic and sanitary practices as well as social distancing. As individuals, we remain the greatest weapon to fight this pandemic. By washing our hands regularly with clean water and soap, disinfecting frequently used surfaces and areas, coughing into a tissue or elbow and strictly adhering to infection prevention control measures in health facilities, we can contain this virus. Since the outbreak was reported in China, our Government has been monitoring the situation closely and studying the various responses adopted by other countries. Indeed, the Director General of the Nigeria Centre for Disease Control (NCDC) was one of ten global health leaders invited by the World Health Organisation to visit China and understudy their response approach. I am personally very proud of Dr Ihekweazu for doing this on behalf of all Nigerians. Since his return, the NCDC has been implementing numerous strategies and programs in Nigeria to ensure that the adverse impact of this virus on our country is minimized. We ask all Nigerians to support the work the Federal Ministry of Health and NCDC are doing, led by the Presidential Task Force. Although we have adopted strategies used globally, our implementation programs have been tailored to reflect our local realities. In Nigeria, we are taking a two step approach. First, to protect the lives of our fellow Nigerians and residents living here and second, to preserve the livelihoods of workers and business owners to ensure their families get through this very difficult time in dignity and with hope and peace of mind. To date, we have introduced healthcare measures, border security, fiscal and monetary policies in our response. We shall continue to do so as the situation unfolds. Some of these measures will surely cause major inconveniences to many citizens. But these are sacrifices we should all be willing and ready to make for the greater good of our country. In Nigeria’s fight against COVID-19, there is no such thing as an overreaction or an under reaction. It is all about the right reaction by the right agencies and trained experts. Accordingly, as a Government, we will continue to rely on guidance of our medical professionals and experts at the Ministry of Health, NCDC and other relevant agencies through this difficult time. I therefore urge all citizens to adhere to their guidelines as they are released from time to time. As we are all aware, Lagos and Abuja have the majority of confirmed cases in Nigeria. Our focus therefore remains to urgently and drastically contain these cases, and to support other states and regions in the best way we can. This is why we provided an initial intervention of fifteen billion Naira (N15b) to support the national response as we fight to contain and control the spread. We also created a Presidential Task Force (PTF) to develop a workable National Response Strategy that is being reviewed on a daily basis as the requirements change. This strategy takes international best practices but adopts them to suit our unique local circumstances. Our goal is to ensure all States have the right support and manpower to respond immediately. So far, in Lagos and Abuja, we have recruited hundreds of ad-hoc staff to man our call centers and support our tracing and testing efforts. I also requested, through the Nigeria Governors Forum, for all State Governments to nominate Doctors and Nurses who will be trained by the NCDC and Lagos State Government on tactical and operational response to the virus in case it spreads to other states. This training will also include medical representatives from our armed forces, paramilitary and security and intelligence agencies. As a nation, our response must be guided, systematic and professional. There is a need for consistency across the nation. All inconsistencies in policy guidelines between Federal and State agencies will be eliminated. As I mentioned earlier, as at this morning we had ninety-seven confirmed cases. Majority of these are in Lagos and Abuja. All the confirmed cases are getting the necessary medical care. Our agencies are currently working hard to identify cases and people these patients have been in contact with. The few confirmed cases outside Lagos and Abuja are linked to persons who have travelled from these centres. We are therefore working to ensure such inter state and intercity movements are restricted to prevent further spread. Based on the advice of the Federal Ministry of Health and the NCDC, I am directing the cessation of all movements in Lagos and the FCT for an initial period of 14 days with effect from 11pm on Monday, 30th March 2020. This restriction will also apply to Ogun State due to its close proximity to Lagos and the high traffic between the two States. All citizens in these areas are to stay in their homes. Travel to or from other states should be postponed. All businesses and offices within these locations should be fully closed during this period. The Governors of Lagos and Ogun States as well as the Minister of the FCT have been notified. Furthermore, heads of security and intelligence agencies have also been briefed. We will use this containment period to identify, trace and isolate all individuals that have come into contact with confirmed cases. We will ensure the treatment of confirmed cases while restricting further spread to other States. This order does not apply to hospitals and all related medical establishments as well as organizations in health care related manufacturing and distribution. Furthermore, commercial establishments such as; food processing, distribution and retail companies; petroleum distribution and retail entities, power generation, transmission and distribution companies; and private security companies are also exempted. Although these establishments are exempted, access will be restricted and monitored. Workers in telecommunication companies, broadcasters, print and electronic media staff who can prove they are unable to work from home are also exempted. All seaports in Lagos shall remain operational in accordance with the guidelines I issued earlier. Vehicles and drivers conveying essential cargoes from these Ports to other parts of the country will be screened thoroughly before departure by the Ports Health Authority. Furthermore, all vehicles conveying food and other essential humanitarian items into these locations from other parts of the country will also be screened thoroughly before they are allowed to enter these restricted areas. Accordingly, the Hon. Minister of Health is hereby directed to redeploy all Port Health Authority employees previously stationed in the Lagos and Abuja Airports to key roads that serve as entry and exit points to these restricted zones. Movements of all passenger aircraft, both commercial and private jets, are hereby suspended. Special permits will be issued on a needs basis. We are fully aware that such measures will cause much hardship and inconvenience to many citizens. But this is a matter of life and death, if we look at the dreadful daily toll of deaths in Italy, France and Spain. However, we must all see this as our national and patriotic duty to control and contain the spread of this virus. I will therefore ask all of us affected by this order to put aside our personal comfort to safeguard ourselves and fellow human beings. This common enemy can only be controlled if we all come together and obey scientific and medical advice. As we remain ready to enforce these measures, we should see this as our individual contribution in the war against COVID-19. Many other countries have taken far stricter measures in a bid to control the spread of the virus with positive results. For residents of satellite and commuter towns and communities around Lagos and Abuja whose livelihoods will surely be affected by some of these restrictive measures, we shall deploy relief materials to ease their pains in the coming weeks. Furthermore, although schools are closed, I have instructed the Ministry of Humanitarian Affairs, Disaster Management and Social Development to work with State Governments in developing a strategy on how to sustain the school feeding program during this period without compromising our social distancing policies. The Minister will be contacting the affected States and agree on detailed next steps. Furthermore, I have directed that a three month repayment moratorium for all TraderMoni, MarketMoni and FarmerMoni loans be implemented with immediate effect. I have also directed that a similar moratorium be given to all Federal Government funded loans issued by the Bank of Industry, Bank of Agriculture and the Nigeria Export Import Bank. For on-lending facilities using capital from international and multilateral development partners, I have directed our development financial institutions to engage these development partners and negotiate concessions to ease the pains of the borrowers. For the most vulnerable in our society, I have directed that the conditional cash transfers for the next two months be paid immediately. Our Internally displaced persons will also receive two months of food rations in the coming weeks. We also call on all Nigerians to take personal responsibility to support those who are vulnerable within their communities, helping them with whatever they may need. As we all pray for the best possible outcome, we shall continue planning for all eventualities. This is why I directed that all Federal Government Stadia, Pilgrims camps and other facilities be converted to isolation centers and makeshift hospitals. My fellow Nigerians, as a Government, we will avail all necessary resources to support the response and recovery. We remain committed to do whatever it takes to confront COVID-19 in our country. We are very grateful to see the emerging support of the private sector and individuals to the response as well as our development partners. At this point, I will ask that all contributions and donations be coordinated and centralized to ensure efficient and impactful spending. The Presidential Task Force remains the central coordinating body on the COVID-19 response. I want to assure you all that Government Ministries, Departments and Agencies with a role to play in the outbreak response are working hard to bring this virus under control. Every nation in the world is challenged at this time. But we have seen countries where citizens have come together to reduce the spread of the virus. I will therefore implore you again to strictly comply with the guidelines issued and also do your bit to support Government and the most vulnerable in your communities. I will take this opportunity to thank all our public health workforce, health care workers, port health authorities and other essential staff on the frontlines of the response for their dedication and commitment. You are true heroes. I thank you all for listening. May God continue to bless and protect us all. Fake remedies have spread across Iranian social media, with methanol simply the latest supposed cure. As an Islamic nation, the consumption of alcohol is banned, but bootleggers have distributed industrial alcohol. “Other countries have only one problem, which is the new coronavirus pandemic,” said Dr. Hossein Hassanian, an adviser to Iran’s Health Ministry who claimed that the problem could be more severe than reported. “We have to both cure the people with the alcohol poisoning and also fight the coronavirus.” An Iranian army soldier walks past rows of beds at a temporary 2,000-bed hospital for COVID-19 coronavirus patients set up by the army at the international exhibition center in northern Tehran, Iran, on Thursday, March 26, 2020. Bats mysteriously drop dead across Israel ‘fulfilling biblical prophecy’ dailystar.co.uk Mar 26, 2020 12:34 PM The young bats showed no signs of trauma and some commentators sensationally believe it is a sign of the end of days Dozens of dead bats have fallen out of the sky in a region in Israel, in what some have bizarrely claimed is a biblical prophecy coming true. Adi Moskowits noticed the lifeless creatures while walking through the Gan Leumi park in Ramat Gan on Saturday. He shared four photos of the dead bats on the ground before another resident – several miles away in the Pardes Katz neighbourhood – posted a video of the same sight. The clip shows a woman moving from one corpse to another. Many of the bats are young and show no signs of trauma, leaving one expert in the field flummoxed. A dead bat Bats have been seen falling from the skies in Israel Another Facebook user said they had seen the dead bats in the city of Hadera – some 50km away from Gan Leumi park. Nora Lifshitz, founder of the Israeli Bat Society, told Breaking Israel News: “The phenomenon is extremely rare.” She suggested the unusual incident may have happened as a result of the cold weather over the weekend. But Nora admitted it was just a theory and she had never heard of the phenomenon before. The creatures were seen across Israel The creatures were seen across Israel According to Breaking Israel News, a religious site that often use Bible verses to “explain” weird happenings, the incident is “a small example of a much larger phenomenon prophesied to appear at the end of days”. They use Zephania 1:3 to support their beliefs, which read: “I will sweep away man and beast; I will sweep away the birds of the sky and the fish of the sea. “I will make the wicked stumble and I will destroy mankind from the face of the Earth.” Some internet users speculated the bats died as a result of 5G towers being erected in the area. Other viewers suggested disinfectant may be to blame. One wrote: “They may have been spraying their cave.” Another agreed, adding: “Maybe spraying the disinfectant?” It comes after hundreds of birds mysteriously dropped dead on a Brit street.
