The national auditor of Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), Alhaji Adewole Adeyanju, has condemned allegations that the new national  chairman of the PDP, Senator Ali Modu Sheriff has links with the Boko Haram insurgency in the North-East.

Adeyanju, in a statement said the allegations were raised by faceless people as part of plots to discredit PDP before Nigerians and the international community.

“It is being erroneously speculated in some quarters that our new national chairman, Senator Ali Modu Sheriff is a Boko Haram sponsor. Let those speculating this, come out with concrete evidence and if they don’t have one, they should keep quiet and stop spreading such dangerous rumour.”

“We are very much aware that some elements are jittery over PDP’s decision to pick him as its new national chairman and the only way out for them is to label him as Boko Haram sponsor, they can not succeed in their new plot because the government would have arrested and charged him to court as it had done to a serving Senator in the National Assembly during the President Goodluck Jonathan’s administration, the trial is still in progress. They can see PDP’s star rising high again in the northern parts of the country.’’

Expect Diversionary attacks PDP Govs tell Sheriff

Meanwhile, the PDP Governors Forum has asked the new national chairman of the PDP, Senator Ali Modu Sheriff not to be distracted by what they call ‘diversionary attacks’ that will arise over his emergence.

The PDP governors however expressed confidence in his ability to reposition the party and make it more inclusive.

The governors of the PDP in a statement in Abuja said the former Borno governor emerged chairman after a careful selection process.

A statement signed by the coordinator of the forum, Mr. Osaro Onaiwu, said: ‘‘The forum is solidly behind and will deploy its support to ensure that our shared vision for our party is realized as we prepare for 2019.

“It should interest you that the present regime has demonstrated that it is not ready for power, it is therefore an opportunity for your tenure to show that the PDP remains the only truly national party that can redress the fumbling and serial inconclusiveness of several programmes and agendas of the APC.”

The statement further added that, “Sheriff is coming on the job with immense wealth of experience and will no doubt use his vast network to rebuild the party, restore members’ confidence and act as a counterfoil to the many antics of the present APC regime.”

Since the emergence of Senator Alimodu Sheriff (SAS), as the acting national chairman of the opposition Peoples Democratic Party (PDP),
yesterday, (Tuesday, February 16, 2016), mixed feelings have though greeted his emergence by party faithfuls, friends, well wishers and
even foes from the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC).

I was initially bewildered by his emergence, giving his alleged sponsorship of the world’s most dreaded terrorist group, Boko Haram.

But like other discerning minds in Nigeria, I have to do a dig into the public archives, and discovered that SAS had since been declared
not guilty by Nigeria’s secret police, the Department of States Services (DSS).

SAS and all lovers and supporters of the PDP must not be demoralized, but go back to the drawing board to harness the goodwill they still
have in the eyes of millions of Nigerians home and abroad, particularly, ahead of the forthcoming general elections in 2019.

This is even as since May 29, 2015, that the PDP successfully handed-over to the APC led by ex-dictator, General Muhammadu Buhari,
it has been one gaffe or the other; one flip-flop or the other; one lie or the other; one denial of campaign promises or the other; one
blame-game or the other.

Infact, the economy has been grounded to an all time low, as a result of inconsistent, little or no economic direction by this babyish
government led by recycled geriatrics and locust of our common patrimony since yester years.

Not deviating, however, website links to be provided below show that SAS and Ihejirika have since been cleared by the DSS of sponsoring
terrorism.

The issues:

1. Sometime in September 2014, it was that Australian negotiator, Stephen Davies, who granted an interview to VOA, Arise Television and
Sahara TV, alleging that SAS and former Chief of Army Staff (CoAS), General Ihejirika, were sponsors of Boko Haram.

Davies said he spoke to Boko Haram field commanders, who confirmed it to him.

However, these BH commanders were later discovered to be fake. It was later uncovered that they were only out to swindle the Federal
Government through phony negotiation.

2. Ihejirika and SAS immediately debunked these allegations.

On Ihejirika, recall it was under his leadership as Chief of Army Staff that the Army began to massively deal with Boko Haram, pushing
them away from Kano, Okene in Kogi State and other parts of the country to Sambisa forest, where they finally made their enclave.

The military onslaught was so massive that the APC, El-Rufai, Murtala Nyako and other northern leaders started crying genocide. They even
threatened to drag Ihejirika to the International Criminal Court (ICC).

Nigerians, particularly APC offline supporters and online thugs and Ricetivists have low retentive memory.

What distinguished legal luminary, Prof. Ben Nwabueze called #NationalAmnesia.

Unfortunately, this has been our problem as a nation since the 1960.

However, who will charge Ihejirika and Sheriff to ICC, now that Oyegun’s party is the ruling party? Note, they won’t be charged again
to ICC, for power has returned to the North.

But has the Boko Haram menace increased under the APC? Res ipsa loquitur (The fact speaks for itself).

On SAS, recall he clarified then, through a press conference that Davies and his co-travelers were only being sponsored by Governor
Shettima to tarnish his image and kill his political career.

According to SAS, he was not the Bornu State Governor when Boko Haram started in Kanama, Yobe State, sometime in 2002, and thereafter moved to Gwoza hill, Bornu State.

SAS clarified that when he became the Bornu State Governor in 2003, he passed ‘wicked’ laws that dealt with Boko Haram and their apologists.

According to him, he made a law prohibiting Boko Haram in the domain of Borno State.

“The law said anybody practising or associated with what Boko Haram was doing, was banned by law from so doing, and if caught, will be
prosecuted and jailed for 25 years,” Sheriff stated.

This stringent law signed by SAS made him and his family number one enemy of Boko Haram.

SAS said Boko Haram killed his biological younger brother (same mother, same father), his cousin, his party chairman, his party
candidate whom he adopted.

According to him, if he was a Boko Haram sponsor, how come, he was now their no. 1 enemy?

He said, Bornu has been favorable to him by making him the first Governor to have being returned, and a Senator thrice, asking how
then, could he have been a Boko Haram sponsor?

SAS said, one Junaid Idrissa Khadi, his former Sheriff (close associate), who later became an SA to Shettima was caught by DSS as an
impostor who connived with Davies to defame him as a sponsor of Boko Haram.

He noted that Governor Shettima knows much about Boko Haram than meets the eyes.

3. Barely three months after these accusation and counter allegation, Nigeria’s secret police uncovered that SAS was defamed by the
Australian negotiator, Davies and his accomplices numbering over seven.

All but Davies, made confessional statements which cleared SAS from Davies’ claims that he (SAS) and General Ihejirika sponsor Boko Haram.

However, the question remains, if some e-thugs are now claiming SAS is a Boko Haram sponsor, has he been charged for terrorism by the
authorities, even when he was still in the then opposition party, APC?

Has Ihejirika been charged for sponsoring Boko Haram, as claimed by Davies and some northern elements?

At the last check, on corruption allegations, Sheriff has not even been charged for trial by Nigeria’s anti-graft agency, but was only
invited in June 2015, to explain how he managed the N300billion his administration got from the Federation’s account from 2003-2011.

He was granted administrative bail by the EFCC afterwards. Nothing has been heard since then.

But the fact remains that, how many ex-governors under this current administration, have been invited for Breakfast, Lunch or even Dinner, by the anti-graft agency or even the Code of Conduct Bureau (CCB), to explain how they ran their states for 4 years or 8 years.

They are: Bukola Saraki (Kwara); Godswill Akpabio (Akwa-Ibom), Muritala Nyako (Adamawa), whose trial started under the last
administration, Sule Lamido (Jigawa State), Gabriel Suswam (Benue State).

Please who again on the list that I failed to mention owing to oversight? Those listed except Nyako are perceived enemies to the
current cabals feasting on our economy.

Infact, not even the Super Ministers of today, who left their states bleeding in debts have been invited. One hopes, they will be invited
under this Pharaoh or a new Pharaoh.

But discerning Nigerians are still watching!

Nevertheless, those who were pained by the military onslaught against Boko Haram, and tagged it a genocide, threatening to drag Ihejirika to ICC for genocide, what has come out of their bloody threat?

Nigeria is an interesting place to be. We love to play a lot of politics with sensitive issues of national importance.

Since power has returned to the North, Ihejirika is no longer going to be dragged to the ICC.

So, what is the headache of APC-aligned handles? Why the noise about SAS.

PDP social media director, Deji Adeyanju, has clarified that the party has a reason for SAS at the moment. So, why are these APC handles who know next to what over-loads, not over-lords shape for them to tweet crying foul and even more than the bereaved.

6. SAS is not the substantive chairman of Africa’s largest opposition party, so, why all the chaotic noise in this market place-and super
information highway?

7. Last night, I took my time to go through the 45-page report and recommendations of the Senator Ike Ekweremadu-led Post Election
Assessment Committee. I read it intoto. Though replete with some printers’ devil, I urge the party to immediately pounce into action to
religiously implement the recommendations of that committee.

With what is happening in the country today, and the apparent disorganization of the current ruling party, which their leader and
President Muhammadu Buhari, has confessed to, the PDP may bounce back.

The Rhetoric on Sherrif sponsoring Boko Haram blew out of proportion when Yusuf was extra judicially killed outside a police station in Maiduguri after sherrif had met with him for allegedly trying to "escape"

People suggested that he (SAS) tried to shut him up (About his role in BH) diplomatically but Yusuf declined so he ordered the policemen to kill him. In fact, I was schooling in Maiduguri then... it was a hot topic!

I still cannot fathom the logic behind his emergence but as you said, only time will tell.

The naming of Senator Ali Modu Sheriff, the former governor of Borno state as the PDP National Chairman and successor to Alhaji Adamu Muazu has generated a lot of controversy in the polity. A prominent member of this forum and staunch critic of PDP, who I consider my brother, friend, and big boss called me to mock the decision of the party. In all honesty, my reaction was more of wearing a sad face that I joined him in the mockery. Who would accept the fact that an "alleged Boko Haram founder" has been saddled with the task of navigating a party that is so engrossed in controversy and is in dire need of leadership? My initial displeasure wasn't hidden even towards some of my PDP comrades.

However, I made up my mind to thoroughly appreciate the man Modu Sheriff and to holistically look at issues that surround his tag as Boko-Haram "founder" to establish whether or not such a moral burden on him is justified.

Sheriff: A Boko Haram Sponsor or Victim of Blackmail?
The Belief...
Before now there is this belief that Ali Modu Sheriff in preparation to 2003 election against then incumbent Malla Kachalla entered into agreement with the Yusufyya BH movement. According to "belief", the Yusufiyya group would support Modu Sheriff's gubernatorial bid on condition that Sheriff's government(if elected) would implement Sharia rule in Borno state. It is also believed Sheriff's appointment of Haramite Alhaji Buji Foi, the National Secretary of Yusufyya Movement as commissioner for religious affairs was in furtherance of the "agreement".

The Facts...
As much as I would not want to draw myself into "defending" anybody associated with BH, I think it will be appropriate to lay this issue to bare. Facts on ground shows that sharia system was adopted in Borno state on August 18, 2000, the law was tagged 'Borno State Sharia Administration of Justice Law 2000'. It came just over a year after Sheriff's predecessor Bala Kachalla took office and almost three years before Sheriff took office. This fact ordinarily should nullify the rumour of purported agreement between Sheriff and Yusufiyya movement prior to 2003 election.

It is even a fact that on adoption of Sharia system in Borno state in 2000, then Governor Bala Kachalla constituted Borno State Sharia Law Implementation Committee in February, 2001 headed by Professor Abubakar Mustapha, the former Vice-Chancellor of the University of Maiduguri, with Boko Haram leader Muhammed Yusuf as a member of the committee. If there is anyone that Yusufyya would have supported in 2003 would have been Bala Kachalla, who flew the AD ticket for re-election but lost woefully to Sheriff. Why should Yusuf not support Kachalla when he not only approved Sharia system but also appointed Yusuf into Sharia Implementation Committee?

With respect to the appointment of Alhaji Buji Foi as commissioner of religious affairs, facts on ground showed that before his appointment as commissioner, Foi was Chairman of Kaga LGA(Borno state) under the administration of Bala Kachalla. It is not uncommon to see incumbent governors' appoint former LGA bosses into their cabinet. There is no record to show any public knowlege of Foi BH activity before his appointment. It is pertinent to note that Foi resigned from Sheriff's cabinet to join forces with the sect because the sect saw Sheriff's government as a number one enemy.

If indeed Sheriff was a "founder" of BH movement how come it was his predecessor in office that had direct link with Muhammed Yusuf and Buji Foi? How come it was his government that first declared BH as terrorist group in May 2010 even before the FG(2013), UK(2014) and USA(2014) declared the group as such? How come the group killed his brother Alhaji Goni Mustapha Sheriff, brother-inlaw Alhaji Awana Ngala, and ANPP Guber candidate for 2011 Engr, Modu Fannami Gubio? Who will kill his own paymaster? Why didn't the group help him win 2011 Senatorial election even when his party(ANPP) won the governorship poll, Presidential poll and two seats in the Senate in the said 2011 election?

When Did APC Realise That Sheriff Is a Baggage?
Sheriff has been a member of the opposition since 1998/9. After he left power in 2011, he was appointed BoT Chairman of ANPP, that has John Oyegun(now APC Chairman) as member and also Ogbonnaya Onu(now a minister) as chairman of the party(ANPP). As BoT Chairman of ANPP, he was instrumental to the merger of ANPP, ACN and faction of APGA that formed the APC. He was also a member of APC Board of Trustees between 2013 till he left the party. He wasn't kicked out of APC, he voluntarily resigned to pitch tent with the then ruling PDP. Now I beg to ask, when did APC realise that Sheriff was a baggage?

It is pertinent to note that prominent Borno politicians linked with BH members are members of APC including; late Senator Ahmed Zanna and Senator Ali Ndume. On October 8, 2012 the JTF spokesman Lt Col Sagir Musa released a statement to say that a BH commander Shuaibu Muhammed Bama was arrested in the house of Senator Ahmed Zanna(APC). Zanna only claim was that Bama was/is his nephew and he wasn't arrested in his house. In fact, DSS had to invite Zanna for "questioning". Despite this, the APC still went on to present Zanna for Senate in 2015(which he won but died before inauguration). Similarly, the APC still presented Sen Ali Ndume for Senate in 2015 despite the fact that he was indicted for divulging phone numbers of prominent Nigerians to BH sect and is presently under trial for terrorism charge. If APC could present these two indicted men for election, if they could massively campaign for them, how then are they crying over Sheriff's appointment as PDP boss?

On Sheriff's Appointment As PDP Boss:
As much as I am not too disposed to the former Borno state Governor, I still believe that it is unfair to base opinion on him due to prejudice instead of established fact. As a party loyalist and patriotic Nigerian, I owe it a responsibility to stand for just cause for Nigeria(where my ultimate loyalty lies) and PDP(that I'm aligned with). As such, I think party members should look beyond prejudice and support the new leadership under Senator Modu Sheriff. It is my prayer that the party under Sheriff carry everyone along, bring in the youth, and take the party to greater height.

Finally, is Sheriff the best man for PDP top job? Only time will tell. All I can say is "Welcome onboard Mr Chairman".
