General Sani Abacha was one of the veterans of military coups in Nigeria. He asked the Head of the Interim National Government (ING) Chief Ernest Adegunle Shonekan to resigned on November 17, 1993. General Sani Abacha did this after Lagos High Court declared the Interim National Government an illegal government and Nigeria was facing a national crises.

In fact, several influential Nigerian such as Professor Bolaji Akinyemi, a former Foreign Affairs Minister. The then presumed winner of the June 12,1993 Presidential election, Chief Moshood Kasimowo Olawale Abiola openly called on Abacha to take over the government to save Nigeria from total collapse. After taking over the government of General Sani Abacha quickly replaced civilian governors with military administrators or military governors.
