Knowing how to speak and write multiple languages in Nigeria can be life changing and a good source of income but it is not easy to master any language, Despite the fact we have English as our official language in Nigeria you will still see people that can hardly speak or understand English.

Nairaland GeneralMeet Oluwafunmibi Babalola, UI Hyperpolyglot Student Who Speaks 24 Languages by PureFace1(op): 8:59pm On Aug 06, 2022
Babalola spoke about her journey into multilingualism, the many doors of opportunities it opened for her, and her plans for the future.

Prosper Oluwafunmibi Babalola is a 400-level student of Veterinary Medicine at the University of Ibadan. She is a hyperpolyglot, culture enthusiast, writer, and entrepreneur. She is popularly called ‘Prosperlingua’ for her exceptional polyglottal skill.

In a chat with Tijani Abdulkabeer, Babalola spoke about her journey into multilingualism, the many doors of opportunities it opened for her, and her plans for the future.

Tijani Abdulkabeer (T.A.): How did you become multilingual?

Oluwafunmibi Babalola (O.B.): I think it’s just interest that keeps me going. There is no explanation for it. It’s my life. I love languages. I am passionate about it. It just happens. I hear a language, and I pick it up.

(T.A.): How long did it take you to learn these languages? Mention the languages you speak fluently.

(O.B.): I have been learning languages since I was a kid. I remember I did French and a bit of Latin in Primary school, and I used to buy language books. Since I have been old enough to read and write, I have been learning languages.

I speak German, Spanish, Hindi, Korean, Japanese, Twi, Zulu, Russian, Chinese, Indonesian, Dutch, French, Latin, Hangul, Italian, English, Hausa, Yoruba, Egun, Egede, and Igbo, among others. 24 languages.

(T.A.): Tell us about your achievements due to the many languages you speak.

(O.B.): I have achieved a lot in languages. It has opened unimaginable doors for me. You know, people’s expressions when they know you can communicate in different languages. And the recent achievement is my tweet which went viral. I only made a careless tweet to sell myself, but before I knew it, my phone started making funny sounds. Too many notifications from several people across the world; [People from different races] were sending messages to offer me jobs. I have had so many interviews and live videos. Celebrities I have always looked up to were following me, sending DMs. Everything was just crazy.

Before now, there were times I used to go from church to church to present God’s name in different languages. Hausa particularly has helped me get suya, free rides, and more on several occasions.

I did many freelance jobs for primarily private individuals and organisations. Something big is also in the pipe, but I can’t disclose it until the organisation unveils me. I will definitely share it when the deal is official.

(T.A.): As a medical student, what are some challenges you faced in attaining mastery in these languages?

(O.B.): There are a lot of challenges. Veterinary school is very crazy. We have classes from 8 am – 5 Pm daily. And you have to resume early so as not to be locked out. But when it’s about learning languages, I am abnormal. I know how to strike a balance. For instance, I have used Duolingo consistently for about a year without missing out on a day. So, how is this possible? It’s consistency. It’s just like a fun activity to me. It’s like an escape from Vet school for me. I see it as fun, not hard work.

(T.A.): What motivates you?

(O.B.): Well, I can’t remember any day I wanted to quit but there are days I felt tired to carry on. You know there is a saying that goes thus – ‘I have come too far only to quit.’ Like, it has been part of me. It has been my life. So, why is it now that I am going to quit? I can’t just quit. The passion keeps me going too. Anytime I am tired, I remember how much I love languages. How much I can’t do without languages and so reminding myself that giving up is not an option.

(T.A.): How big of a role do you think languages can play in fostering unity in Nigeria?

(O.B.): Languages can play a huge role because one of the significant problems we have as Nigerians is the fact that we are divided in terms of the tongue. People don’t understand each other, and they don’t get to. So, if we can find common ground to embrace one another culture or learn each other’s way of life, we are going to get that much-needed unity.

And in a situation where that is not possible because it’s a popular belief that when you learn other people’s language, you are gaining a window into their life. You are seeing the world from another perspective. So, if there can be a language exchange program, we are gaining ground in people’s lives, and then we are going to understand, appreciate and love them. And speaking from experience now, there is no way you would learn other people’s language and not love them. When there is love, it is like a pointer to development.

(T.A.): How do you think technology can help make the process of learning languages easy?

(O.B.): Using technology will give us exposure to comprehensive applications that can speed up the process of learning languages. I can tell you that the major problem I have had, trying to learn some local languages, was because they don’t exist on the Internet. For instance, Egbiri, I googled and googled, yet I couldn’t find any resources online. Now, I have to meet people from that tribe for personal coaching. And it was very hard getting them to teach me at my own pace. But when there is an application, it speeds up the process.

(T.A.): Is being a hyperpolyglot a skill or a talent?

(O.B.): Well, I feel like it’s mostly an innate ability, but of course, it can be acquired. That is, learning, but for people that have the talent, they just find it easy.

Although I have a personal belief that you can learn anything in the world, of course, there would be a distinction between someone that knows it naturally and another that goes and learns it. But being a hyperpolyglot is more of a talent, but if you are hardworking and consistent, you can acquire it as a skill.

(T.A.): What’s your dream career?

(O.B.): My dream is to be a billionaire. [Laughs]. A billionaire in any career path I eventually choose.

I have big plans to implement my language skills. I want to connect people to an endless world of possibilities that learning languages can bring to them. I also intend to incorporate these languages into filmmaking. Very soon, I would go into making YouTube videos to tutor people in these languages. Then make money and impact.

I am already focusing on them, but the bigger plans are still something I want to keep private for now.

SportsIs Ghana In Common Wealth Game 2022? by PureFace1(op): 7:44pm On Aug 06, 2022
To those guys that always put Nigeria down and denigrate Nigeria at every opportunity they get, I wonder if there are no athletes in Ghana, no Sports facilities or their government doesn't invest in sport at all?

So far Ghana have zero Gold medal in common wealth game 2022, Nigeria that I believe is going to perform woefully is currently topping every African countries on the medal table.

Ghana have one bronze medal so far.

Nairaland General‘innoson Breached Agreement’ — Imo Counters N2.5bn Debt Claim by PureFace1(op): 4:41pm On Aug 01, 2022
The Imo government says the claims by Innoson Vehicle Manufacturing Company 0ver N2.5 billion debt are “distasteful and cheap blackmail”.

Declan Emelumba, commissioner for information and strategy in Imo state, said this in a recently released statement.

The government said the company’s claims are half-truths and intended to tarnish the integrity of the current administration for ulterior motives.

On Friday, Innoson Vehicles filed a lawsuit against the Imo government over N2.54 billion debt.

It said the state government had purchased various IVM vehicles — including the parts which it manufactured, sold, and delivered — worth N2.54 billion and refused to make payment “despite repeated demands and appeals”.

Countering the claims, the commissioner said the government bought vehicles worth over N5 billion from Innoson Vehicles and has paid N3.5 billion to the company.

According to him, the said N2.5 billion was the balance due from the original value of the purchase.

Emelumba added that the vehicles supplied worth over N5 billion — and the government has been servicing the debt.

He said contrary to the claims, the management of Innoson Vehicles breached the contractual agreement with the state government regarding the sale and maintenance of the vehicles.

According to him, the purchase agreement stipulates that the company would set up a maintenance and mobile workshop in Owerri.

He noted that despite the breach of contract by the company, the state government has been servicing the debt and still maintaining the vehicles, adding that more than 70 percent of the vehicles have already broken down.

“It appears the company is out to rubbish the integrity of the government, otherwise it would not have twisted the facts of the case and published the same concerning this honest business transaction, even when it failed to show the public the terms of the contract and the clauses the government breached therein,” he said.

“The whole thing smacks of mischief and bad faith.”

Emelumba added that Innoson Motors had not exhausted all means of negotiation before threatening the government with a lawsuit.

“The mischievous resort to media trial has confirmed that the company is more interested in compromising the integrity of the government rather than being paid its outstanding balance from the contract sum,” he added.

The commissioner noted that the state is yet to receive any court process.

For Many of you campaigning against Tinubu because of health and age, although it matter it is not what matter most and a priority. One of the best performing president of America that led them through the greatest depression, economic crisis and world War 2, presided from a wheelchair.

What we should make a priority is the policies and ideas of presidential candidates and wether they have the capability to implement it.

Franklin D. Roosevelt was not healthy like Tinubu he was almost paralysed and still performed as a president, because it is brain job not a sport.

Paralysis to presidency of Franklin D. Roosevelt

At the 1920 Democratic convention Roosevelt won the nomination for vice president on a ticket with presidential nominee James M. Cox. Roosevelt campaigned vigorously on behalf of American entry into the League of Nations, but the Democrats lost in a landslide to the Republican ticket of Warren G. Harding and Calvin Coolidge. Roosevelt then became vice president of a bonding company, Fidelity and Deposit Company of Maryland, and entered into several other business ventures.

In August 1921, while Roosevelt was on vacation at Campobello Island, New Brunswick, Canada, his life was transformed when he was stricken with poliomyelitis. He suffered intensely, and for some time he was almost completely paralyzed. His mother urged him to retire to the family estate at Hyde Park, but his wife and Howe believed it essential that he remain active in politics. For his part, Roosevelt never abandoned hope that he would regain the use of his legs.

Unable to pursue an active political career as he recovered from polio, Roosevelt depended on his wife to keep his name alive in Democratic circles. Although initially very shy, Eleanor Roosevelt became an effective public speaker and an adroit political analyst under Howe’s tutelage. As a result of her speaking engagements all over New York state, Roosevelt never faded entirely from the political scene, despite what seemed to be a career-ending affliction. In 1924 he made a dramatic appearance at the Democratic convention to nominate Alfred E. Smith, governor of New York, for president, and he repeated his nomination of Smith at the 1928 convention. Smith, in turn, urged Roosevelt to run for governor of New York in 1928. Roosevelt was at first reluctant but eventually agreed.

As he traveled by automobile around the state, Roosevelt demonstrated that his illness had not destroyed the youthful resilience and vitality that had led people such as Howe to predict great political success. He also showed that he had matured into a more serious person, one now with a keen appreciation for life’s hardships. On election day Roosevelt won by 25,000 votes, even though New York state went Republican in the presidential election, contributing to Herbert Hoover’s landslide victory in the 1928 presidential election over Smith.

Encyclopædia Britannica, Inc.
Succeeding Smith as governor, Roosevelt realized he had to establish an administration distinct from that of his predecessor. Accordingly, he declined to appoint Smith’s cronies to state office and did not look to Smith, the “Happy Warrior,” for guidance. Smith, already stung by his defeat for the presidency, was hurt by Roosevelt’s apparent lack of gratitude, and a breach developed between the two men.

During his first term, Governor Roosevelt concentrated on tax relief for farmers and cheaper public utilities for consumers. The appeal of his programs, particularly in upstate New York, led to his reelection in 1930 by 725,000 votes. As the depression worsened during his second term, Roosevelt moved farther to the political left, mobilizing the state government to provide relief and to aid in economic recovery. In the fall of 1931 he persuaded the Republican-dominated legislature to establish the Temporary Emergency Relief Administration, which eventually provided unemployment assistance to 10 percent of New York’s families. His aggressive approach to the economic problems of his state, along with his overwhelming electoral victory in 1930, boosted Roosevelt into the front ranks of contenders for the Democratic presidential nomination in 1932.

Because winning the nomination then required a two-thirds vote in the Democratic convention, even a leading contender could be stopped with relative ease. It soon became apparent that Roosevelt’s strongest opposition would come from urban and conservative Eastern Democrats still loyal to Smith; his strongest support was in the South and West. The opposition became stronger when John Nance Garner of Texas, speaker of the House of Representatives, won the California Democratic primary. But on the third ballot at the 1932 convention, Garner released his delegates to Roosevelt, who then captured the required two-thirds vote on the fourth ballot. Garner received the vice presidential nomination. Roosevelt then broke tradition by appearing in person to accept his party’s nomination. In his speech before the delegates, he said, “I pledge you, I pledge myself, to a new deal for the American people.”

With the depression the only issue of consequence in the presidential campaign of 1932, the American people had a choice between the apparently unsuccessful policies of the incumbent Hoover and the vaguely defined New Deal program presented by Roosevelt. While Roosevelt avoided specifics, he made clear that his program for economic recovery would make extensive use of the power of the federal government. In a series of addresses carefully prepared by a team of advisers popularly known as the Brain Trust, he promised aid to farmers, public development of electric power, a balanced budget, and government policing of irresponsible private economic power. Besides having policy differences, the two candidates presented a stark contrast in personal demeanour as well. Roosevelt was genial and exuded confidence, while Hoover remained unremittingly grim and dour. On election day, Roosevelt received nearly 23 million popular votes to Hoover’s nearly 16 million; the electoral vote was 472 to 59. In a repudiation not just of Hoover but also of the Republican Party, Americans elected substantial Democratic majorities to both houses of Congress.

In the four months between the election and Roosevelt’s inauguration, President Hoover sought Roosevelt’s cooperation in stemming the deepening economic crisis. But Roosevelt refused to subscribe to Hoover’s proposals, which Hoover himself admitted would mean “the abandonment of 90 percent of the so-called new deal.” As a result, the economy continued to decline. By inauguration day—March 4, 1933—most banks had shut down, industrial production had fallen to just 56 percent of its 1929 level, at least 13 million wage earners were unemployed, and farmers were in desperate straits.

In his inaugural address Roosevelt promised prompt, decisive action, and he conveyed some of his own unshakable self-confidence to millions of Americans listening on radios throughout the land. “This great nation will endure as it has endured, will revive and prosper,” he asserted, adding, “the only thing we have to fear is fear itself.”

He left with his people after they lost the war and later founded Ijebu kingdom it was also the same reason that Ijebu people hardly associate with Oyo Empire and it was also the same reason that King of Ijebu concocted that Sudan story so as not to be under Ooni of Ife influence.

Ooni of Ife is an Oduduwa descendant and the Ijebu still aren't happy with the way they left ile - ife back then. They believe Ile - ife ruling dynasty belong to them.

Ijebu people are not jew same way Oduduwa didn't migrated from Saudi Arabia

Oduduwa was a Yoruba man from Ijesha Land because of the role he played in Yoruba land they made him a Gods through that story of descending from the sky, same way Yoruba Gods were once real people that lived among Yoruba before they died, for example Ogun and Sango, sango was an Alaafin of Oyo Empire before he died, but they turned his history to a myth to make him a gods.

MrColdsweat:
Most Yoruba sub-ethnic groups were yorubanized via conquest.

The ijebus do not come from the lineage of oduduwa. They migrated from sudan and have now taken up the Yoruba language. But Does that make them Yoruba?
Who told you that?

You guys act like you know Ijebu history more than Ijebu people themselves.

Awolowo is an Ijebu man so you want to tell me Awolowo is no longer Yoruba?

You are very ignorant.

It is not only people that descended from Oduduwa lineage that bear Yoruba alone.

Yoruba mean people that migrated from Ile Ife in present day Osun state, to be a Yoruba at least you must have connection and trace your Origin to Ile ife.

You see how painful it is when you people claim Delta Igbos are not Igbos and at the same time say the 1965 coup is an Igbo coup.

We know Aworis are Yorubas, but we just want you guys to see how foolish your thinking about Delta Igbos are.

We will continue to push that narrative until Yorubas repent.

Aworis are Yorubas but Egun, Ilajes and Ijebu are not. They don't even share the same ancestry. They were only Yorubanised due to closeness to Oyo Empire.

FACT
Who told you they are not from the same Ancestry?

Every Yoruba sub group trace their origin to Ile - ife and migrated from ile ife

You are just ignorant and adding "fact" in capital letters at the end of your comment doesn't make it fact.
