I am not really saying Nigerian government should embark on the costly project of dredging the River Niger to enable it carry large vessels, no, Nigeria of today don't even have such money to start with.

I am only using this opportunity to correct those that believe that Southeast is landlocked and wont have access to sea to own a seaport should Nigeria divide and they become a separate country.


Southeast is not landlocked.

Through Rivers Niger and Imo River and one other river in one Anambra community, Southeast can have full access to sea to enable international cargo vessels sail.


All that is required is a huge investment to dredge the rivers and deepen their depth to be able to carry large or medium size international vessels, which will be done if Southeast becomes an independent nation at any time because they won't have any other option but to invest and get it done for their economic and trade survival.


Another primitive fellow that claim to be an Ijaw agitator made a statement that any ship sailing to Onitsha port will still pass through Ijaw waterways, which was an indirect mocking of Southeasterners which he is always fond of, so I also tried to educate him to understand that United Nations have a law or what we call UN charter that compels all nations to allow other nations access to sea for commercial purposes. They can only restrict their waterways if there is war and if war breaks out, they will be forced through military operations to open it, the question then becomes who is stronger to bend to the other?


I also made him realize that the ships that come from China, etc to Portharcourt port, Lagos Tincan or Apapa ports didn't fly from China and drop at Apapa or Portharcourt ports, they passed through other nation's territorial waterways and canals too.


Those are my points anyway

Some nations turn their rivers to vessel carrying water, it's all about investing to dredge and expand it to go deeper enough to carry large or medium sized vessels as the case maybe.


And there is United Nations charter that compels all nations to allow other nations access and passage through their waterways to access the sea if need be.

They don't understand that you can be inland, but if you have a River going to sea, you have access to the sea

All the eastern ports especially Onitsha are very economically viable but poor governance and backward politics wouldn't allow them to thrive,we still have a long way to go in this country but who's the leader to lead us on that journey?
