ADDITIONAL VAT EXEMPTIONS IN OIL, GAS SECTOR

On October 2, 2024, the federal government introduced the VAT modification order and notice of tax incentives for deep offshore oil and gas production.

The order exempted VAT collection on a range of key energy products and infrastructure, including diesel, feed gas, liquefied petroleum gas (LPG), compressed natural gas (CNG), electric vehicles, liquefied natural gas (LNG) infrastructure, and clean cooking equipment.


Two days later, Taiwo Oyedele, chairman of the presidential committee on fiscal policy and tax reforms, unveiled the 63 items exempted from VAT.

According to the new tax Act, the VAT would not be collected on petroleum products, renewable energy equipment, compressed natural gas (CNG), LPG, and other gaseous hydrocarbons.

However, the law stipulated that the minister, by an order published in the official gazette, can determine when VAT collection would be suspended on the items.

“Charging and collection of VAT on the following items shall commence on the date indicated by the Minister, or suspended where it is expedient to do so in the public interest, by an order issued in the Official Gazette,” the document further stated.

According to the act, some other items may also be classified as exempt or zero-rated supplies by an order issued by the minister in the official gazette.

The listed items include equipment, components and infrastructure related to the conversion and installation or expansion of CNG and LPG, including conversion kits; and services relating to the conversion and installation of CNG and LPG.

The African Democratic Congress (ADC) has clarified the position of Peter Obi, the 2023 presidential candidate of the Labour Party (LP), amid growing speculation about his political future ahead of the 2027 general election.

Bolaji Abdullahi, interim national publicity secretary of the ADC, stated on Monday, July 28, that Obi is still very much part of the coalition formed by opposition parties.

Dismissing rumours suggesting that Obi might rejoin the Peoples Democratic Party ( PDP), he said: “Peter is in the coalition regardless of what anybody is saying,” Abdullahi said.


PDP still under APC's grip, says ADC

He explained that Obi is well aware of the political risks involved in returning to the PDP , especially given the influence the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC ) still holds over the main opposition party, The Cable reported.

“Everyone knows that the jugular of PDP is still in the hands of the ruling party. Peter Obi, more than anyone else, knows that he cannot take the risk of going to the PDP,” he added.

Abdullahi also mentioned that the growing popularity of the ADC has started to affect internal movements within the PDP, hinting at shifts in political alignments as 2027 approaches.

When asked about the ADC’s plans for a presidential candidate, Abdullahi stressed that the party is currently focused on building strong internal structures and not on selecting a flagbearer.

“Our party is one month old. We are not having any conversation about who will be the flagbearer at the moment. We are focused on developing the party, building structures, and establishing systems that demonstrate our commitment to democracy," he explained.

He assured that when the time is right, the ADC will choose its presidential candidate through a democratic and transparent process, Vanguard reported.

“The question of who becomes the flagbearer of the party is a question we are going to answer down the line, and we are going to do so in a very democratic and transparent way,” Abdullahi said.
