I have only seen one side of the correspondence - his letters to her - and it is, of course, sometimes impossible to know what the cardinal is referring to. But I have done some old- fashioned journalistic sleuthing, and I believe that at an early stage of the relationship - probably in the summer of 1975 - Anna-Teresa Tymieniecka told Karol Wojtyla that she was in love with him. As Pope, John Paul rewrote the rules of the papacy, travelling the world as no pope had done before him and, in the early days especially, pulling the crowds like a rock star. His response to Anna- Teresa Tymieniecka's declaration when he was a cardinal showed he could be every bit as unconventional in his private life. Far from ending the relationship, as a more prudent prelate might have done, he gave her one of his most treasured possessions - an item of devotional clothing known as a scapular. |
So the first hint of any real intimacy comes in a letter sent not from Krakow, but from Rome, where Cardinal Wojtyla spent more than a month attending a meeting of Catholic bishops in the autumn of 1974. He took several of her letters with him so that he could answer them "without using the mail", and writes that they are "so meaningful and deeply personal, even if they are written in philosophical 'code'". Towards the end of the letter he adds that "there are issues which are too difficult for me to write about". |
In 1970s Poland any relationship between a clergyman and a woman was risky. The communist regime in Warsaw regarded the Catholic Church as the enemy, and the secret police - the SB, as they were known - watched its leaders constantly. Dr Marek Lasota, who has been studying communist- era files at the Institute of National Remembrance in Krakow, says the SB took a particularly close interest in Cardinal Wojtyla. "They installed wiretaps in his flat and his telephone was bugged," he says. "Every letter was intercepted and checked, both private and official." |
In 2008, the letters were bought by the National Library of Poland for what is thought to be a seven- figure sum. Usually when a library buys an important archive about a figure of Pope John Paul's stature you would expect a bit of a fanfare, and the letters would be put on display and made available to scholars. But these were kept away from public view. |
It is public knowledge that for four years Cardinal Wojtyla and Anna-Teresa Tymieniecka collaborated on an English-language version of a book on philosophy he wrote while teaching at Lublin University, and Anna-Teresa Tymieniecka has a walk-on part in several John Paul biographies. But the relationship was much deeper and more complex, and continued for far longer than has previously been recognised. |
Even more revealing is the archive of letters that Anna-Teresa Tymieniecka sold to the National Library of Poland in 2008. These were kept away from public view until they were shown to the BBC. When the two met in 1973, Cardinal Karol Wojtyla - as he then was - was the Archbishop of Krakow. Anna-Teresa Tymieniecka was Polish by birth, and, like him, had endured the searing experience of the Nazi occupation during World War Two. After the war she left to study abroad and eventually pursued an academic career as a philosopher in the United States, where she married and had three children. |
Anna-Teresa Tymieniecka was a great hoarder, and she seems to have kept everything relating to her 32-year friendship with Saint John Paul. After her death, a huge cache of photographs was found among her possessions. We are used to seeing John Paul in formal papal clothing amid the grandeur of the Vatican, and yet here he is on the ski slopes, wearing shorts on a lake-side camping trip, and, in old age, entertaining privately in his rather sparse- looking living quarters. |
Pope John Paul II was one of the most influential figures of the 20th Century, revered by millions and made a saint in record time, just nine years after he died. The BBC has seen letters he wrote to a married woman, the Polish-born philosopher Anna- Teresa Tymieniecka, that shed new light on his emotional life. |

Metropolitan Illarion, the Russian cleric in charge of foreign affairs, said the main topic on the agenda would be persecution of Christians worldwide. "The situation in the Middle East, in northern and central Africa and in other regions where extremists are perpetrating genocide of Christians requires immediate action and an even closer cooperation between Christian churches," Illarion said. While there are still issues separating the two organizations, "we need to put aside internal disagreements and pool efforts to save Christianity in the regions where it is subject to most severe persecution," he added. |
The Vatican and the Russian Orthodox Church have announced that Pope Francis would meet Moscow Patriarch Kirill for the first time. The two religious leaders are set to discuss the prosecution of Christians. Patriarchen Kirill The pope and the head of the largest Orthodox Church would meet next week in Cuba, the churches said in a joint statement on Friday. According to the statement, the high- profile summit on February 12 "will mark an important stage in relations between the two churches. The Holy See and the Moscow Patriarchate hope that it will also be a sign of hope for all people of good will. "They invite all Christians to pray fervently for God to bless this meeting, that it may bear good fruits," the statement added. The two leaders are set to meet at the Havana airport during Kirill's visit to Cuba, with Francis making a stop on his way to Mexico. |
The US Federal government is now in $19 trillion of debt, and it took a little more than 13 months for it to climb by $1 trillion since it hit $18 trillion in December 2014. But the Federal government is still free to borrow without limit. Let’s have a look why the Congress is not bothered about such a high level of debt. The latest figures show that government debt is the equivalent to nearly $60,000 in deficit spending for every American. The pace of the increase is slightly stepped-up compared to the last few trillion dollar mileposts. It took about 14 months for the debt to climb from $17 trillion to $18 trillion, and about the same amount of time to go from $16 trillion to $17 trillion. Some time ago, Congress passed legislation to increase the debt ceiling up to a certain amount, and borrowing had to stop once that limit was hit. However, over the last few years the Federal government has suspended the debt ceiling for extended periods, leaving the government free to borrow as much as it needed. |
The United Kingdom rejected the ruling made by the United Nations, that WikiLeaks founder Julian Assange should be allowed to go free, and that his stay at the Ecuadorian embassy amounted to arbitrary detention. Assange, an Australian citizen, has avoided extradition to Sweden on alleged rape charges because of fears it could lead to his extradition to the United States, where he is sought on charges relating to his WikiLeaks website. Sweden has stated that it would not prevent his extradition to the US. "This changes nothing. We completely reject any claim that Julian Assange is a victim of arbitrary detention. The UK has already made clear to the UN that we will formally contest the working group's opinion," a British government spokesman told Reuters. |
In a nutshell, learning about the past aids us when trying to learn about the present. This is universally true and applies to present Monsanto practices. Looking back at its history raises serious doubts. |
Milk from rBST-treated cows is not chemically identical to traditional milk; milk from rBST- treated cows contains slightly elevated levels of certain hormones. Cows treated with rBST have a substantially higher rate of mastitis, the inflammation of breast tissue, and more often require antibiotics. |
Vietnamese authorities estimate 400,000 people were killed or maimed, and 500,000 children born with birth defects as a result of the use of the chemical. The Red Cross of Vietnam estimates that up to 1 million people are disabled or have health problems due to Agent Orange. United States Air Force records show that at least 6,542 spraying missions took place during the war. Nearly 20,000,000 U.S. gallons (76,000,000 liters) of material containing the chemical herbicide mixed with jet fuel was sprayed in Vietnam, eastern Laos and parts of Cambodia. In 1994 Monsanto began to produce yet another controversial product; a recombinant bovine somatotropin (rBST) branded Posilac. The administration of rBST increases the milk yield in lactating cows. From 2000 to 2005 the USDA National Agricultural Statistics Service (NASS) survey of dairy producers found that about 17% of producers used rBST. |
In 1935 the company acquired Swann Chemical Company; a PCB producer. PCBs were widely used as dielectric and coolant fluids in transformers, capacitors, and electric motors. The toxicity of PCBs had been known since before its first commercial production through research done by producing companies themselves in the 1930’s; however, these conclusions were dismissed as negligible. Much like DDT, contact with PCBs is known to cause major health problems including liver cancer. Again babies exposed while in the womb are at risk of changing sex or developing into neither male nor female, a condition termed intersex. Before the United States Congress banned domestic production in 1979, Monsanto produced 99% of all PCBs used by U.S. industry. Monsanto’s most notorious past product must be the herbicide widely known as Agent Orange. During the 1960’s and 1970’s Monsanto was one of the most important producers of Agent Orange for the U.S. Armed Forces during the Vietnam War (1961-1971). |
Monsanto began manufacturing the insecticide DDT, a chemical used against insects, in 1944. DDT was used in the second half of World War II by the U.S. to control malaria and typhus among civilians and troops. After the war, DDT was made available for use as an agricultural insecticide, and its production and use greatly increased. In 1962, the book ‘Silent Spring’ by American biologist Rachel Carson was published. The book catalogued the environmental impacts of spraying DDT and questioned the logic of releasing large amounts of chemicals into the environment without fully understanding their effects on ecology or human health. Due to the book’s success and resulting public outcry DTT was banned in the U.S. in 1972. DDT was subsequently banned for agricultural use worldwide under the Stockholm Convention in 2004. DDT has been linked to diabetes, asthma, early pregnancy loss, premature birth and low birth weight. |
The Dark History of Monsanto_The company’s first product was the artificial sweetener saccharin, which it sold to the Coca-Cola Company. Saccharin has effectively no food energy and is devoid of any food value. Studies on laboratory rats during the early 1970’s linked saccharin with the development of bladder cancer in rodents and as a consequence, all food containing saccharin was labeled with a warning. However, in 2000, the warning labels were removed because scientists learned that rodents, unlike humans, have a unique combination of high pH, high calcium phosphate and high protein levels in their urine which caused saccharin to damage their bladders. Doctors still caution pregnant women against excessive consumption of products containing artificial sweeteners since such foods could be replacing nutrient- dense, energy-yielding foods. Without the labels the advice is difficult to follow. |

superpundit:your arguement is inconsistent... You can as well ask my ancestors who funded Buhari's three previous shot for the number one seat or better still, ask us who funded Obama's and David Cameron's presidential campaign because they were in the opposition as at the time of their respective elections. You don't have a valid arguement but a mere kettle logic... |
