Foreign Affairs › Re: Russian Missile Strikes On Kharkiv Central Freedom Square, Residential District by Quelme: 5:34pm On Mar 01, 2022
d142475:
NATO is a defense alliance and not an offense alliance. Without NATO, Russia would have overrun and annexed the countries of the former Eastern Bloc in a bid to re-establish the Soviet Union. Putin is pained; he holds a grudge of history against the West for the fall of the USSR, which he calls the greatest geo-political tragedy of the 20th century.
No, the US or the West is not prodding Ukraine to be against Russia- the Ukrainians themselves, like most of the countries of the former Eastern bloc, favor close ties with the West over Russia. The Ukrainians, like every people, have the right to determine whom they associate with. But Russia is not having it. Putin is paranoic about NATO, but NATO is never going to provoke Russia into a war- it exists to deter the Russian bully machinery. Russia wanted a permanent guranatee that Ukraine will not join NATO, but neither the West nor Ukraine was willing to give him that. Maybe they should have just agreed and signed whatever agreement and went ahead to do what was in their minds anyway. That’s the only fault I found with the West or Ukraine. But again, they are not obligated to follow the wish of a wanna-be emperor of a fallen empire.
Make no mistake about this, neither the US nor Europe nor Ukraine is responsible for this war.
Vladimir Purim’s Russia alone is responsible for this unprovoked assault on a sovereign nation.
and they bombed Yugoslavia, Libya, Afghanistan, Syria, Iraq or defensive don get another meaning. Abeg make me understand...
Foreign Affairs › Belarus Approves Hosting Nuclear Weapons, Russian Forces Permanently by Quelme(op): 10:26pm On Feb 28, 2022
Belarusians voted Monday to allow the country to host nuclear weapons and Russian forces permanently, results showed, part of a package of constitutional reforms that also extended the rule of leader Alexander Lukashenko.

The referendum was held Sunday as the ex-Soviet country's neighbour Ukraine is under attack from Russian troops and delegations from Moscow and Kyiv are expected to meet for talks on the Belarusian border.

Central Election Commission head Igor Karpenko said 65.16 percent of referendum participants voted in favour of the amendments and 10.07 percent voted against, Russian news agencies reported.

According to Karpenko, voter turnout stood at 78.63 percent.

To come into force, the amendments need to receive at least 50 percent of the vote with a turnout of over half the electorate.

Lukashenko, who has been in power since 1994, promised the referendum in the wake of historic protests against his disputed re-election in 2020.

By amending the constitution Lukashenko, 67, follows in the footsteps of Russian President Vladimir Putin, who in 2020 oversaw a vote on constitutional changes that made it possible for him to remain in power until 2036.

The constitutional changes also grant immunity to former leaders for crimes committed during their term in office.

Russia is a key ally of Belarus and last week Lukashenko allowed Russian troops to use Belarusian territory to invade Ukraine from the north.

Belarus inherited a number of Soviet nuclear warheads following the break-up of the USSR in 1991, according to the Nuclear Threat Initiative think tank, which it then transferred to Russia.

Lukashenko first floated possible changes after a presidential vote in August 2020 sparked unprecedented demonstrations that were met with a brutal crackdown.

He claimed a sixth term in the vote and imprisoned leading opposition figures, while his main rival Svetlana Tikhanovskaya was forced to seek refuge in neighbouring Lithuania.

The amendments would reinstate presidential term limits -- previously ditched by Lukashenko -- to two five-year terms, but they would only apply to the next elected president.

Were Lukashenko to put himself forward as a candidate for re-election in 2025, he could remain in power for an additional ten years.

Tikhanovskaya's office in Lithuania has hit out at the vote, saying that a sweeping crackdown on any dissenting voices since the 2020 election made any real discussion of the proposals impossible.

Foreign Affairs › Snake Island: Ukraine Says Troops Who Swore At Russian Warship Are Alive by Quelme(op): 10:15pm On Feb 28, 2022
Ukraine's navy says the 13 soldiers believed to have been killed defending Zmiinyi (Snake) Island on the first day of the Russian invasion are alive.

The border guards were given posthumous honours by the president after they were heard in audio recordings telling a Russian warship to "go to hell".

Russia said at the time that the troops on the island surrendered.

On Monday, the Ukrainian Naval Forces confirmed in a Facebook post that "our brothers-in-arms are alive and well".

The border guards and marines on the island "twice bravely repulsed the attacks of the Russian occupiers" but were unable to continue fighting because they ran out of ammunition, it said.

The Russians "completely destroyed the island's infrastructure", including lighthouses, towers, antennae, and severed communications with the mainland, it added.

The Ukrainian navy also accused Russian forces of illegally detaining the crew of a civilian search and rescue ship that Ukraine sent to the island on a humanitarian mission after the attack, as well as two priests who were accompanying them.

"The illegal seizure of a non-combatant civilian vessel that did not carry out any military mission is a violation of the rules and customs of war and international humanitarian law," it warned.

A Russian defence ministry spokesman announced on Friday that 82 Ukrainian servicemen "laid down their weapons and voluntarily surrendered" on Zmiinyi Island, without mentioning whether the Russian warship carried out any strikes or inflicted casualties.

He said the captives were being "asked to sign an undertaking not to take part in hostilities" and would "be returned to their families in the near future".

Zmiinyi Island lies in the north-western Black Sea, about 48km (30 miles) from the Ukrainian coast and 300km west of Crimea, which was annexed by Russia in 2014.

It has a strategic importance that belies its size - only about 16 hectares (40 acres) - with the Atlantic Council think tank calling it "key to Ukraine's maritime territorial claims".

oz4real83:
When your enemy tells you to hand over your weapon of protection, with a promise to protect you, it is the biggest foolishness to believe the promise of that enemy. Ukraine used to hold either the second or third highest cache of soviet nuclear weaponry before the fall of the soviet union. After the fall, Russia asked Ukraine to hand them over with a promise never to invade any part of Ukraine. Ukraine believed Russia and handed the weapons to them, instead of using them to protect itself. No country has invaded North Korea despite its attrocities just because of its nuclear weapons holdings. Russia would have thought twice before invading Ukraine if they still had those nuclear weaponry.
nuclear weapons they inherited from the Soviet union. They don't even have the technical know how to operate and maintain it and so rightly dismantled it.

FYI, Belarus and Kazakhstan gave up their nukes too.
