mach7:TRUE. PLUS HE MAKES VERY CARELESS STATEMENTS FOR A SUPPOSED 'JOURNALIST', WHICH ACTUALLY AMOUNT TO LIES. FOR EXAMPLE, THEIR PANEL WERE DISCUSSING THE TEAM NIGERIA GOLD MEDALLISTS AND ATHLETES' SUCCESS YESTERDAY, AND HE SAID THE SPORTS MINISTRY DESERVES NO PRAISE, THAT THE ATHLETES RECEIVED ''NO FUNDING'' FROM THE GOVT, AND THEY DID IT ALL ON THEIR OWN. THIS IS CLEARLY FALSE WHEN YOU DO EVEN BASIC RESEARCH OF THE NEWS. THE TEAM WAS HEAVILY FUNDED BY THE FG AND RECEIVED MAXIMUM SUPPORT FOR WHICH EVEN THE ATHLETES PRAISED THEM. |

Amusan, Brume, 12 Others Beneficiaries of NOC Scholarship Grants, Says Gumel The President of the Nigeria Olympic Committee (NOC), Habu Gumel, yesterday revealed that the two Nigerian athletes who excelled at the just concluded World Athletics Championships, Tobi Amusan and Ese Brume, were on the sponsorship of the Olympic body. Gumel noted that the NOC, as an organ of the Federal Government, placed Amusan and Ese on a scholarship programme since 2018 with annual stipends paid to them till date. Working in concert with the Federal Ministry of Youth & Sports and the Athletics Federation of Nigeria (AFN), the NOC president further hinted that the duo of Amusan and Brume are among the 14 Nigerian athletes that have continued to receive NOC support till Paris 2024 Olympics. According to Gumel, the scholarship fund is from the IOC Solidarity Fund secured by the NOC. “We have 14 of our notable Grade A athletes on this scheme and we have never failed to give them their training and school grants. Gumel stressed that these athletes need to pay for all their coaches and other support staff like chiropractors, physiotherapists, etc so that they can stay in top shape. “This is why grants are essential for athletes,” Gumel stressed. In addition, the Minister of Sports, Sunday Dare, came up with the Adopt-an-Athlete initiative in which the Delta State Government adopted Brume while Ogun State adopted Amusan. It is believed that each of Amusan and Ese received about $36,000 in recent times apart from what they enjoy as adopted athletes of Ogun and Delta states. “They have also collected monthly upkeep money since January till date. These are facts but we don’t need to put this information in the public space, but it is important to note that the AFN, NOC and the FG are working round the clock to boost the fortunes of the country’s athletes who are our ambassadors,” concludes Gumel. https://www.thisdaylive.com/index.php/2022/07/28/amusan-brume-12-others-beneficiaries-of-noc-scholarship-grants-says-gumel/ |
Federal Govt Rewards Team Nigeria Medallists, Coaches With $25,000 In Birmingham The Federal Government has rewarded Team Nigeria Athletes who won medals at the ongoing Commonwealth Games in Birmingham and their coaches with $25,000 cash. The Honourable Minister of Youth and Sports Development, Mr Sunday Dare while making the presentation to the Athletes and Coaches at Hilton Garden, Birmingham yesterday, stated that the reward was one of the proactive measures put in place by the Ministry and President Muhammadu Buhari’s Administration in particular, to boost their morale. Represented by the Director, Federations, Elites and Athletes Department of the Ministry (FEAD) and Chef De Mission, Dr Simon Ebhojiaye, Dare said that the athletes and coaches were being rewarded for bringing glory to their fatherland. He assured of government’s continued commitment to the development of sports in Nigeria. This in addition he said, was one of the reasons for the establishment of Parasports Department in the Ministry to further provide an opportunity for people with disabilities to also strive and excel in the field of sports. The Minister expressed optimism that with the calibre of Athletes, Coaches, Officials and Technical crew Nigeria is having in Birmingham and their level of commitment and patriotism, the country is no doubt set to record more podium performances at the games. He urged them to remain focused, determined and more committed so as to ensure that Nigeria remains among the topmost countries in the world of sports. Speaking earlier, the 59kg Women’s Weightlifting Gold medalist, Folashade Lawal, on behalf of the medalists and coaches expressed their appreciation over government’s proactiveness, assuring that the reward will spur the athletes into winning more medals for the country. She attributed the successes recorded so far to the glory of God, team work, discipline, hard work as well as government support to sports development in the country. At the ceremony, the gold medal winners, Adijat Adenike Olarinoye and Rafiatu Folashade Lawal, received $5,000 each, silver medalist, Taiwo Laidi got $3,000; bronze medallists Edidiong Joseph Umaofia and Islamiyat Yusuf got $2,000 while their coaches were also given $3,000 respectively. https://leadership.ng/federal-govt-rewards-team-nigeria-medallists-coaches-with-25000-in-birmingham/ |

Buhari Must Be Praised For The Glorious Rise of Nigerian Athletics The last month or so has seen Team Nigeria gather an unprecedented haul of medals, including numerous gold medals, and achieve the shattering of WORLD RECORDS, AFRICAN RECORDS, COMMONWEALTH RECORDS, at every turn. Today was another such day. Our Womens' 100 metres relay team destroyed a star-studded track to win gold at the Commonwealth games in Birmingham, in addition to another gold medal won by Tobi Amusan in the 100 metre hurdles. Another gold medal just came in in the womens long jump. Our men have fared better than in recent years, winning numerous silver and bronze medals in boxing, wrestling, weightlifting, table tennis, and athletics. As at today, TEAM NIGERIA have won 13 gold medals, 9 silver, and 14 bronze at the Commonwealth games in Birmingham. THIS IS UNPRECEDENTED. So what accounts for this success? GOVT SUPPORT. The FG has given maximum support to Team Nigeria. Right from Oregon, where, in addition to their usual allowances, a million dollars cash bonus was shared among the team, with Tobi Amusan receiving 20,000 dollars cash, to Birmingham, where all monies have been paid, to back in Nigeria where training facilities were upgraded and funded, there has been a SEA CHANGE in the govt approach to Nigerian sports, from what occurred in the past. THE RESULT? WHAT YOU ARE SEEING TODAY, AS OUR SPORTSMEN AND WOMEN BRING GLORY TO THEIR FATHERLAND. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Vz6oxxMn6lU&t=28s&ab_channel=KevotheDJ https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=0TtTPqOP0IM&ab_channel=JerryGinger President Buhari deserves praise for this success, because nothing gets done in sports without the full backing and support of the FG. |
Passionnn:Yeah.....just like when the men were doing well (ie in 99% of Nigerian appearances) the women were busy doing ashewo. Mumu. |
ReachHard:YOU'RE A BIG FOOL WHO DESERVES NOTHING GOOD WITH YOUR ATTITUDE. WHEN THE GOVT DOES WELL, BE A MAN AND SAY SO. IT WON'T KILL YOU. TEAM NIGERIA IN OREGON PRAISED THE FG FOR ITS FULL SUPPORT FOR THE TEAM, AND EVEN THE AWARD OF A BONUS OF ONE MILLION DOLLARS SHARED AMONG THE WHOLE TEAM, WITH AMUSAN RECEIVING 20,000 DOLLARS CASH. IT'S A FAR CRY FROM THE USUAL COMPLAINTS ABOUT UNPAID ALLOWANCES, GOVT NEGLECT ETC, AND IT HAS SHOWN IN THE GREAT MEDALS HAUL IN OREGON AND NOW IN BIRMINGHAM. |
WE MUST ALSO COMMEND THE FG FOR THE SUPPORT IT GAVE TEAM NIGERIA AT BOTH THE WORLD ATHLETICS CHAMPIONSHIPS IN OREGON, USA, AND THE COMMONWEALTH GAMES. THEY MADE SURE ALL MONIES WERE PAID PLUS ALL ALLOWANCES ETC, PLUS FULL GOVT SUPPORT WITH TRAINING FACILITIES ETC, UNLIKE PREVIOUS GOVTS. |

ponyonm:BULLSHIIT. AS A PRESIDENTIAL CANDIDATE CLAIMING TO BE A COMPETENT LEADER, HE CANNOT JUST PICK OUT ANY RUBBISH STATISTIC ONLINE WITHOUT CROSS-CHECKING THE SOURCE. I MEAN, IT'S THE VERY LEAST YOU SHOULD EXPECT OF A PRESIDENTIAL CANDIDATE, FOR CRYING OUT LOUD. IF HE MISMANAGED A SIMPLE TASK LIKE THAT, WHAT ELSE WOULD HE MISMANAGE AS PRESIDENT? |
Johnrake69:SHUT UP. HE NEEDS TO GIVES US ACCURATE STATISTICS AS A PRESIDENTIAL CANDIDATE, NOT JUST BLOWING OFF NUMBERS FROM HIS HEAD THAT ARE WAY OFF THE TRUTH WHEN FACT-CHECKED. |
Not surprised. Peter Obi always makes these careless statements with dodgy statistics painting Nigeria as worse than it is. He needs to act more presidential. If you don't know the actual figures, don't say stupid stuff like ''90% are living below the poverty line'' etc etc, when this can be easily fact-checked to show the figure is actually 48% etc. He can't just pull numbers from his head like some street tout or some ignorant, jobless nairalander. |
