A Hawaiian woman has been left outraged after state officials asked her to cut down her 36-letter surname – because it wouldn’t fit on the ID card. Furious Janice Lokelani Keihanaikukauakahihuliheekahaunaele claims the state has been ‘disrespectful’ towards her Hawaiian heritage after being reissued an ID card with only 35 letters in her surname. Her name is so long that the driving licence in question does not even include her first name and middle names at all. Mrs Keihanaikukauakahihuliheekahaunaele, who has had to carry two ID cards for the past 20 years, said that the action of missing off one letter was ‘disrespectful of the Hawaiian people’. ‘The county has never accommodated my name on my driver’s license,’ she told Honolulu television station KHON2. She said the new ID has created a number of problems for her, including not being able to travel and being questioned by police during traffic. ’He looked at it and he goes, “Well, where is your first name?” And I said, “Don’t blame me. This is your department, this is the county”.’ Mrs Keihanaikukauakahihuliheekahaunaele said that she has been told by the country to take her maiden name or shorten her last name. But she wants to keep the name as a tribute to her late husband. After the TV station that originally reported the story pressured the local Department of Transport on the issue, officials said they will extend ID cards to a 40-character limit. ![]() |

It has become necessary to state the rationale for cases we get involved in TEHN aim to provide succour to individuals who are currently incapacitated either by reason of ill-health and/or poverty, subject to a case by case evaluation We also consider cases where the need is well defined and bounded so that the individual(s) is capable of getting back on their feet with no further involvement from us. In other cases where a case cannot be taken directly by us, we can provide partial verification and campaigning as our investment in the case. Thank you for your understanding |

damiso: Good morning my neighboursThe Nigeria Customs Service (NCS) Thursday reopened cargo warehouses belonging to the Skyway Aviation Handling Company Limited (SAHCOL) and the Nigeria Aviation Handling Company (NAHCO) Plc. The warehouses were shut nine days ago to enable them put in place facilities for Customs officials to inspect goods and cargoes imported into the country. The NCS spokesperson at the Murtala Muhammed International Airport (MMIA), Ikeja, Lagos, Mrs Thelmas Williams, made the confirmation in a message sent to aviation correspondents. Also, the spokesman of SAHCOL, Mr. Basil Agboarumi, and the Head, Corporate Communications, NAHCO, Mr. Sanya Onayoade, confirmed the development in another message. “This is to confirm that the SAHCOL warehouse is now opened. “All differences has been reconciled, and business has resumed at the import section of the warehouse. “The outcome of this will lead to better services to all importers and exporters using the SAHCOL gateway,” Agboarumi said. He added that the management of SAHCOL appreciated the understanding of their customers during the closure. Onayoade said that his company, together with the Customs Area Command, had agreed on the execution of a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) to guide the operation of all stakeholders in the cargo business. THISDAY gathered that the reopening was a relief as the airport had become congested with uncleared imported cargoes due to the closure. |
